Are there any particular chargen houserules we should use, other than using xp? I'm assuming that Merits and Flaws aren't allowed?

Free excellency with every charm purchase, Hardy keyword and, when it becomes applicable, free spell with sorcery initiation.

Merits on a case by case basis, no flaws.

Everyone uses solar costs, knacks count as favored charms.

In my case, let's say I get 6 Malfeas charms, does each charm gives me 1 purchase of a Malfeas Excellency? Or could I take 3 slots of a Malfeas Excellency and 3 slots of a SWLIHN Excellency?

No, only the associated excellency. You would, however, be able to take 3 slots of Malfeas and the 2nd and 3rd upgrades.

Mmmm, I'd say you get to pick which Yozi they count as when you pick the first one and then stick with that choice.

Clarification: When you pick your first Martial Arts charm, you pick a Yozi that you're then stuck with for all other Martial Arts charms.

Sorcery is not allowed at chargen right? If possible, the reasoning behind it would be that my character is intended to be an experimental physicist that exalted after a failed experiment, but when gaining his Exaltation a hidden insight was revealed through his notes as the key to bend reality to his will with a mixture of essence applied to his scientific knowledge.

Speaking as a highly trained physicist, I have to say not 'no,' but HELL NO. ;)

One more thing, how does the Infernal Exaltation work in this world? Do I still undergo through the process of failure and forging a Chrysalis Grotesque with a demon?

No demon or chrysalis, it works like its previous owner had gotten all the freedom-granting devil tiger charms. As for the selection process it's more that your character lives up to the ideals it embodies, in this case She Who Lives in Her Name's.

I should also make it clear that at gamestart your characters have no idea what makes your powers tick nor how to use Essence to affect the world without the use of charms, or even that there is such a thing as Essence. If your characters think of their powers as magical bullshit, sufficiently advanced technology or divine intervention is of course up to you, but it doesn't change what you can do to the world.

Abyssals don't have Whispers, right?

Also, Power vs. Realism in character stats -- should I go for Attributes or Abilities of 5, and the accompanying Charms? Or is that too much for a beginning character?

Abyssals do not have Whispers at start, no.

Even without 5's everywhere, you're going to outclass any mortals you may run into. If there's a charm that fits your concept that requires a higher rating than your concept warrants, let me know and maybe we can reduce its prereqs (this does not hold for Essence). That said, I don't want to tell you how to play your characters, but I do not expect to be throwing foes at you right out of the gate that can't be handled with 8ish dice before excellencies and proper use of charms and cleverness.

...Speaking of Essence, that is hard capped on 3 since you have not had time to raise it, and soft-capped on 2, I will want good arguments as to why you have figured out how to use your powers so well so early.

I want to have two distinct sides to my character, one is the scientist, average in most areas except on the intellectual field, modest, simple, decent and fearful like most people, and that of "Mr Hyde", which I'm thinking I'll make as a sort of alter-ego/dual personality, an unconscious personification of this man's hidden desires and (unknowingly to him) empowered by the demonic nature of his Exaltation, bestial, savage, lustful and primal.

Ideally, he would have very average physical stats and abilities, but when channeling this anger and savage side (via certain charms probably), a couple of these stats would increase dramatically a la Hulk/Banner. Any suggestions on how to play these traits mechanically? One way I thought is via Infernal Monster Form and By Rage Recast, but I was wondering if you would allow a mutation ala God Body (either taken independently or as part of the mutation library of By Rage Recast) found in Scroll of Heroes pg 135?

What does God Body do for you that By Rage Recast doesn't do better?

Also, be aware that the Exaltation does not create things that weren't there before, it only enhances them.

One of the appeals is that God Body can be used without waiting for the anima banner to reach the 11m+ level.

If you pay 5m to activate your Anima Power, you're also activating By Rage Recast, which is a reflexive action and thus not something you have to wait for ;)

Otherwise, I'm sure you can think of some use for 11+ m

I was thinking Performance 5, rather than Melee 5...tho an Abyssal with high levels of Performance and Presence doesn't need Melee 5...

Withering Phantasmagoria is pretty cool, as is Silver-Voiced Nightingale Style. :)

In this game, Performance is likely going to be more destructive than Melee. My only issue is that her lack of success prior to Exaltation indicates to me that she was not among the very greatest actors alive at the time.

Also, do you have a rewrite of SVNS that you like, or were you planning on the SotM version?

Well, she did land a callback to a major play (at the Belasco, I'm thinking -- they're one of the few Broadway houses that does a lot of classical drama, plus being actually haunted) and success in the performing arts is as much about who you know as how good you are, honestly...but yeah. She's only 25; that level of mastery takes a while.

I was going by SotM, with all the drawbacks that entails. Have you seen a rewrite anywhere?

Hmm. The SotM version actually works better for Lavinia's concept, as it contains a lesson about the dangers of focusing too much on either positive or negative emotions in art...

As a warrior-type Exaltation, and a Lunar to boot, would you be conceptually okay with passing off high knowledge of Martial Arts and Survival as instinct? Or just very fast learning after exaltation (no training time on favored abilities!)?
