Empire of Starland

"Yeah." There was something she wanted to do with it, after all. If training in the magic was enough, then... she'd do what she could to master it. A deep breath, and then she turned around, looking at the hut separate from the rest of town. "Right now, actually." As soon as she could get her feet to move. One step, there, and now she was walking towards the building, whether Kevin was joining her or no.

A strong woman? What did that have to do with it? Strength... which meaning of it did he mean, she wondered. There were so many different versions of it, after all... ones where her actions were a sign of weakness, ones where they were a sign of strength... and ones where she'd never even gotten the chance to do it. A tiny shake of her head, bangs shifting slightly, now wasn't the time to muse about strength.

She arrived at the house not long after starting to walk forwards. They hadn't been all that far away, after all. The door opened before she had moved a hand, the form of Hinata revealed to have opened it. One eyebrow was raised, but she looked more expectant than angry, and Saphire swallowed her worries, stepping through the doorway once Hinata was out of the way.

"Better, but not completely recovered." It was a tiny drop, but there was now a frown. "it seems that the magic's nature has been tainted now, but only enough to make one sensitive to evil now... not enough to make the magic itself evil. I don't know what effects it'll have on you, but it's best that you learn some spells, Saphire." the bluenette nodded, agreeing completely.

"If I can learn it in it's pure form then it's less likely I'll accidentally use the corrupted magic, and... I might be able to completely destroy the true source of the taint, if we come across it." Cults always followed something, and it had to be something powerful, to affect the very nature of a form of magic.

A jump... draconic flame magic was... it was rare, and amazingly powerful. For most of it's history it was limited to certain bloodlines, but now? It was possible for someone to use weaker versions of it's spells... though his power was not weak. In fact, it was very very strong. "I knew you were powerful, Kevin, but... not that powerful." That was honestly more than she would have imagined.

"I do not know of my bloodline but every summer I would be brought here to train in it. The rest of the year I would use the spells to help out with day to day things," Kevin said smiling gently.

((Just making this up, you can say it was a rumor if you don't like it.))

"Oh, I remember... there was that one summer you set fire to the old town Library, wasn't there?" Hinata sounded like she was joking, and the image that popped into Saphire's head was, in fact, pretty funny, so she started laughing, one hand over her mouth. "Either way, the old library was burnt down, but none of the books were hurt, and everyone blamed you for it."

"No, actually that was a rumor that caught wildfire. Usually I used it to help put out fires and for camping out. I can create, manipulate, and absorb flames," Kevin said looking at Saphire gently.

She nodded, so... he was like a fire-elemental, or a dragon. Fair enough, considering his magic type. "That sounds like a very useful form of magic, si-Kevin." Those eyes again... he was looking at her like she was some kind of treasure. She squirmed slightly under his gaze, still not entirely sure what she thought of him. He loved her, yes... and he wouldn't give up on her, but... she knew nearly nothing about him, though she was learning. For all his kindness and strength... could she love him? Was she even capable of that feeling, having spent all her time in a wall of words and spells?

Hinata managed to get out another laugh, and then she shook her head, "A rumor huh. Well, that explains why the books were ok, all of them have a protective spell on them. Your flames are able to burn past magic, from what I've heard." She shook her head, turning her attention back to the younger woman. "Now then, as much as I'd like to spend the day reminiscing about those summers... I really don't think this is the time. The cult, did you manage to get rid of them?"

"I found one group about a two days' ride to the east of here. I'm unsure of others, I came back to request a sensory. To see if the taint is gone," Kevin said looking at Hinata.

She nodded, walking into the center of the room. "Saphire, I'm going to need your connection to the Source. Please, sit in this circle." A glowing magic circle appeared as she closed her eyes, folding her legs in a meditative state as two more appeared, on either side of her. Saphire nodded, taking the indicated seat, "You too, Kevin. I want your power for protection. I might be divinely protected, but she is not." Already power was beginning to form around her, making her hair and cloak rise slightly.

Kevin sat down in a meditative position and meditated with the focus of protecting Saphire. Closing his eyes, he reappeared on the spiritual plane seeing Saphire and stood to protect her.

Saphire swirled in front of a ball of energy, her manifestation clearly visible, and slight glowing on her shoulders, but otherwise was the same as before. Some of the energy was attached to her, at the arms and legs, but the rest was streaming behind her. She seemed unaware of the energy, and looked to Hinata calmly. The other woman had the same aura as had begun to form on the physical plane, but it was larger, and seemed to radiate from within.

"this way, we must follow the link." she pointed to a pale-blue string that went into the distance, darkness descending in the direction they were going. Saphire followed the elder woman, seemingly unaffected by the rapidly increasing proximity of the shadows, though they swirled as black torrents in water whenever they got close to her.

Kevin held Saphire and swam increasingly fast through the plane. Smiling gently, he felt completely at home for some strange reason. Then he saw a portal to a different dimension where a man his age was being abused. Seeing this he wanted to interfere and then the man said to a woman, "I am Kevin Hawk Dobson."

Kevin blanched and suddenly realized he was looking into a different dimension where he was the firstborn of five boys. Sighing to himself he continued on his journey.

Saphire kept her eyes stubbornly on the string, not looking to either side or into the swirling masses. Slowly she followed Hinata, who was watching over the path, and slowly light began to fill the area. Echos of other worlds, some where she was a mere student, others where she was some kind of nonhuman being, quite a few where she had horror filled eyes... and she ignored them, holding onto the calm she had found inside, and then suddenly the darkness was behind them.

The area they found themselves in, it turned out, was some sort of blue-silver substance's holding spot, and she... could see a black spot not far away. There was an incredible urge to rush over to it and drag it out, but she held back half-because Kevin was holding her, half because she knew if she touched it nothing good would come of it. "Smaller..." Hinata's voice, enough to tear Saphire's eyes from the silvery energy to her. "Certainly the death of cultists has an effect, but.." Did that mean there were more cultists, or that they were only a conduit to feed it energy?

Kevin closed his eyes and felt the spiritual energy of the cultists. Looking at Hinata he said, "I've got their scents. Now I can finish them off. Should've done this first."

"Then let's leave... I don't want to stay here longer than we have to." Hinata took a deep breath, and then she chanted something in a language Saphire had never heard, though it seemed related to the language used in Arcana chants. That must be the language of Seers, she thought to herself.

There was a flash, and then Saphire's eyes opened, legs folded and a sense of something missing on her back, like something that should be there but is not.

"Let's get this over with," Kevin said as he walked out of the tent. Walking towards Cenarius he said, "Saphire stay here."

She nodded, "Yes sir." Darnit, that spell was making her agree without thought... not that she minded. That sense of loss was still there, and she didn't trust herself to fight against anyone with the urge to jump into the air and deal with the enemy from there. A tiny shake of her head, and then she turned to Hinata, asking her calmly, "Could you train me in MoonlightMagic?"

"Are you sure, Kevin? I mean you know she's strong," Cenarius told him.

"Cenarius, last time she was almost dragged into the taint. I am not going to expose her to that again," Kevin said as they followed the spiritual energy of the tainted users.

Saphire and Hinata had settled into meditation again, the answer being in the affirmative, and Hinata was talking to her as she felt her energy rise, her hair floating slightly as well. "That's right, keep meditating, and now I want you to remember that connection we followed. Try to find it, focus on it... can you see it?"

"Yes, I can see it." A small nod, and she nearly lost the image, the flow of energy around her disrupted by the movement.

"Good, now hold onto that image, and remember how you felt looking at the Source." She did, the quality of her magic changing, and then Hinata continued, "The difference from regular magic and Moonlight magic is simple. The Source has a different nature, especially for those who can control the magic instead of merely using it. For now, I want you to draw the feeling of the source closer to you through the link."

Kevin followed the strands and silently killed them one by one. Sighing to himself as his hands became soiled in the blood of the taint. He could feel himself getting stronger with each kill. Looking at the bodies, he said, "Cenarius, let's go to the village."

"About time," Cenarius said to Kevin.
