Realistic or Modern Doki Doki Vol. 1

Choice: Say hello to Daichi.
  • Choice: Say hello to Daichi.

Instead of avoiding Daichi, you casually approach him, lifting your hand and giving him a small wave as you get closer. This grabs his attention and he turns to you which causes you to finally notice he wasn't wearing his glasses. "Hello again," you greet him in a friendly manner, despite your conflict over your earlier and confusing interaction with him in your other shared class.

"Honami-san," he greets you with a return nod. This guy didn't seem the talkative type, but he wasn't unfriendly either.

Choice: Ask him about the seating thing.
  • Choice: Ask him about the seating thing.

You were still a bit bothered by the seating thing from earlier. You awkwardly stand there for a moment, unsure on how to exactly approach the subject and avoid sounding accusatory. "Uhm, so in the other class, where you warned me to not seat next to the window seat. You seemed to ignore your own advice and took a seat next to a window yourself. Why would you take that seat when you warned me?"

That probably still came out like you were annoyed at him, but there really wasn't another way to really ask. Daichi doesn't seem bothered by your question at all as he leans back casually against the gym wall, though not directly looking at you as he replies. "The seat I chose was still in the front row, though next to the window. The teacher could have moved me as well, but being in my position and the seat I chose, left me where I was. I don't understand why such a minor thing bothers you, it is not as though I took the seat you had originally claimed, nor did I force you to change your seat."

The PE teacher loudly blew their whistle which caused everyone to go silent. They were being paired today to practice ball throwing exercises and of course you get paired with Daichi.

    What will you do?

You're a bit flustered by his reply, but all he said was true. He hadn't taken your seat and he also didn't force you to give it up. Why did this bother you so much? Decided to switch topics to something else, something more friendly you decide to ask a different question. "Are you in the student council by any chance? The people who were seated with at lunch looked like they were."

"No, though your assumption about those at that table are correct. I decided to not be involved in the student council this year," he answers, throwing the ball at you, which you toss back to him. Honestly, this was a silly exercise. Or at least you thought it was until a ball from some other pair flew past the person who was supposed to catch it and smacked right into your face! Ouch! Right on the nose!

"You're nose is bleeding. Excuse us, I'll take them to the infirmary," Daichi calls out to the teacher, grasping your arm and beginning to pull to away.

You don't resist as Daichi leads you to the infirmary. You wouldn't know where it was anyway since this whole school was unfamiliar territory. He leads you through the hallways till you reach your destination, still holding your arm as you go while you use your hand to try and stop your nosebleed as you walk. He opens the door to the infirmary and guides you inside and has you sit on one of the many small beds in the room.

"Seems the nurse isn't here," he comments before grabbing a tissue and offering it to you. You take it and hold it to your nose while he leans over, his face getting closer to yours. "Doesn't seem to be broke at least. Do you want me to stay here till the nurse comes back?"

"Perhaps you should stay here, I couldn't really see where you were leading me because I was looking up and holding my nose the entire time. I'd probably get lost on the way back," you answer. You'd rather not wander around aimlessly until you either managed to find your way back or found someone to ask and get directions from. Surely the nurse wouldn't take too long to come back.

Daichi pulls away from you to claim a seat at the nurse's desk, leaning back casually. "Well, if she's not back in five minutes and if your nose bleed stops we could just head back to class then. Is it still bleeding?" You pull away the tissue and dabbing your nose with a clean spot to see some blood still coming out. That ball hit you harder than you thought. Why the hell they were throwing it that hard in the first place was beyond you. Maybe people did need to practice ball throwing.

You wait in silence with Daichi and within a minute or two the nurse appears with a steaming cup of coffee in his hand. "Oh, sorry! Hope you didn't have to wait long. Bloody nose huh? Let's take a look."

The nurse takes your hand away from your nose and discards the used tissue, after some poking and asking some question they give you the all clear to return to class, but say that if your nose starts to bleed again to come back to see them. You thank the nurse and Daichi leads you back to the gym , this time without touching you.

You pause just before you enter the gym with Daichi. "Thanks, by the way, for taking me to the nurses office. I probably would've gotten lost on my own," you tell him. Diachi turns his face slightly so he can look at you before turning back to look forward. "It wasn't a problem. We'll have to move a bit further away from that group when we go back in since they clearly can't control their own strength." It almost seemed as if he was concerned for you. You give a nod of agreement, even if he can't see it, because you don't want to take another ball to the face.

Daichi takes a moment to talk to the teacher when you both return before going to grab a ball and picking a spot completely on the other side of the gym from the duo that was clearly in some sort of trouble and was now under the strict and personal guidance of the assistant PE teacher. "Seems no one else was injured," you comment to yourself as you go back to the practice with Daichi.

Rather than spend the rest of the class in uncomfortable and awkward silence - as the other pairs were chatting away - you decide to try and make some small talk with the rather stoic Daichi. "So, what kind of music do you like?" you ask him as you toss the ball back after catching it. The question causes Daichi to pause for a moment before he threw the ball back towards you.

"I'm not sure I would want to confess something like that to you," he replies.

Confess? Who the hell considered talking about musical tastes as a confession? As though he could read your thoughts he continues. "You could say I like music that seem... strange for my character."

Before you could press further the teacher blew their whistle and told everyone to go back to the lockers and change back into their uniforms, forcing you and Daichi to separate as he stays behind to gather the balls for the class. Perhaps later on when you've gained more trust Daichi will tell you about his mysterious musical tastes.

You head to your next class; Literature. And a shocking twist of fate, Naoto shares this class!

    Choice: Soul.

You look at him, giving him a completely serious face as you prepare to deliver your line. "How about my soul?" This causes Naoto to pause for a moment before bursting out laughing, even having to wipe a tear from his eyes because of how amused he was by your offer.

"That's a bit excessive, but so tempting to take you up on that offer. Unfortunately, you'll just have to wait until the next time I see you in art class."

Before your conversation can continue the bell rings and you take a seat, which Naoto takes a desk right next to your own. Maybe you two could be friends, it remains to be seen. About fifteen minutes into the class your eyes begin to feel heavy and your head sags a bit; lower and lower each time until...

    BAM!

You face thuds onto your desk and jerks you awake and you earn a hard glare from the teacher. It wasn't your fault that when others read aloud in a monotone manner that you dozed off. The student who was currently reading stopped and it was Naoto's turn now to read. Thankfully his reading was a little more lively with inflection of tone and emotion compared to having to listen to a bland and boring voice.

As they were going seat by seat as soon as Naoto was done it became your turn. You sigh as you look to the page to pick up where he left off.

    Choice: Dramatic.

You jump right into the reading, giving it a dramatic flair that surprises even Naoto, who tries his best to not let out a chuckle as you read. This hadn't been expected and the teacher sat at their desk blinking in somewhat stunned silence. Your classmates however were enjoying your 'showmanship' and were actually listening instead of spacing out. That's all this book needed was a decent reading style to make it interesting, and interesting it now was.

Once you were finished you stopped reading as though you hadn't just told a dramatic epic and the teacher had to call out the next person's name a few times to make them focus back on what they were actually doing. This student moaned that they couldn't follow up such an act, but they still tried and it was a major improvement for the rest of the reading. Once every student had taken their turn in reading a section the students were put into groups of four of their choice.

Naoto talk his way into the group you were joining. The assignment was simple enough, talking about what you just read and see if you can 'read between the lines'. "I must say I am impressed," Naoto commented. "I didn't think you had that in you."

"You should totally join the drama club," one of the other students in your group commented. "I think you'd fit right in with us." Apparently they were trying to recruit you for their club.

"Are clubs mandatory?" you inquire. Your previous school didn't have a required club, but you had heard before coming here that this one might.

"Yes, you have to join at least one club. Don't worry though, because it's a requirement there are a ton of options to pick from. So, even if you don't want to join the Drama Club you can find something."

"I'd suggest joining the Art Club, but not sure if you're interested in that," Naoto chimes in. "Just thought if we're pitching clubs might as well throw out my own."

"I'll think about it," you say slightly awkwardly due to the pressure of having to choose. If only someone else could just choose for you.

You push the topic back to the assignment which near the end of class your group writes down and turns in their answer. You let out a sigh of relief since it meant you could get away from talking about clubs. You head to your next class which you share with Hana; Home Economics. You weren't a chef, but your food was edible. Your stomach churns slightly. Was this anxiousness or Hana's cooking?

When you reach the class Hana waves at you to join her. You do so because doing otherwise would be rude and you were already on a path of being Hana's friend. "I'm so happy we share more than one class together," she beams.

  • Choice: Say you're excited to eat more of her cooking.

"I'm excited to try more of your cooking," you state to her boldly even as your stomach clinches in reaction as though it knows Hana's cooking isn't safe. You'll just have to try and help her. Besides, this was a cooking class, surely with a teacher's guidance Hana's cooking here would be perfectly fine!

"Really?! No one else really seems to want to eat the stuff I cook, well at least the last time I took Home Economics," Hana comments, appearing to be confused as to why anyone wouldn't like her food. You nervously laugh, had she taken this class and failed before?

"Well, I'll try it for you, if you try mine as well," you playfully negotiate, which Hana gives you and enthusiastic thumbs up.

The bell chimes and class begins with those at each table being told they were to make a simple snack of their choice and that the table with the best results would get to select the next recipe the class would have to use.

    Choice: Onigiri.

  • Choice: Onigiri.

"How about we make onigiri?" you suggest. It was a simply rice snack that no one should have a single problem making. If your hunch about Hana's cooking skills were indeed correct, there was no way even she could screw this up. It was literally just white rice and nori (seaweed). Hana eagerly agrees and the rest of the group after overhearing the other snacks being made agree since no one else would be doing it.

"What type of filling should we add?" Hana asks.

"Uh, let's just make it simple this time," you say with a small nervous tremble in your voice, hoping she doesn't catch on to the reason why you want to avoid making it more complicated. Hana ponders this for a long while before shrugging. Step one done; select a simple dish no one can screw up.

"So, we need to prepare the rice," you begin, and Hana goes to the pantry of the Home Economics room and grabs a large bag, trips, falls, and sends the rice all over the place. She blushes and apologizes as she cleans up her mess and your team look on her with worry. "Good thing we were going to clean it off first anyway," you say, trying to cheer up Hana as she arrives with the rice that was returned to the bag.

One of your group members takes the rice from Hana and sets to work while you prepare the rice cooker. Thank goodness the class had one of these. You had heard it was possible to burn water and at the rate Hana was currently going, no doubt she'd do that or harm herself. With the rice cleaned and put into the rice cooker, all that was really left to do was wait.

  • Choice: Cheer her up.

"Don't worry too much about your trip earlier," you tell Hana as you all wait for the rice. "Everyone falls down and you got up and kept going and we still could use the rice. So, don't stress, okay?" You were trying to cheer her up, but struggled with it. You didn't really know her well enough to know the right things to say, but you were going to try anyway. Hana seems to perk up a bit, but still seems a bit down after her earlier embarrassment.

The rice was done cooking soon enough and you urge Hana to be the one to take care of it and let it cool down enough so your group could roll it into onigiri triangles. Before any of you begin rolling the rice you add a dash of salt for flavor and mix it into the rice. Hana was about to dive into grabbing some rice to roll, but you quickly stop her. "Your hands have to be wet first," you inform her. Hana listens to you and you move on to rolling the rice. Hana actually doesn't struggle with this task and soon enough had rolled more than everyone else in the group. Perhaps there was hope for her cooking yet!

"Hey, you're really good at that," you compliment, which makes Hana smile at last.

"I've helped make these before, but my mom never let me actually prepare the rice before. Only to roll it up and put wrap it in nori."

"Well, maybe after today you can go home and make some for her all by yourself," you suggest. This idea invigorates Hana who grins as she expertly wraps the rice balls in the nori. Soon enough your group was done with the snack and hand over one to the teacher before snacking on the rest yourselves. They weren't that bad and your stomach seems to sigh in relief that you wouldn't endure any more food poisoning today.

Unfortunately with such a simple dish your team doesn't get selected as the winner and thus doesn't get to pick out the recipe for the next class. The bell chimes and you walk with Hana to your homeroom that you apparently share with her. Once there you see many familiar faces. Hana goes to greet some friends of hers, leaving you to your own devices.

    Joined Akane in Homeroom

  • Choice: Kanada Akane

You haven't had much of a chance to chat with Akane, who you see as a sweet shy girl. You decide to go talk with her and as you approach give her a small wave. She gives you a shy smile, "Pleasure to see you again. I'm glad we share homeroom as well."

"Me too. I was honestly worried that I wouldn't share another class with you," you admit. "Well, I wouldn't call homeroom really a class, but still I'm glad we're in the same homeroom."

Your homeroom teacher tells everyone to take a seat, which you do next to Akane since you were over there. "Welcome students to another school year, blah blah blah. I'm not going to go with this whole speech the Principle has written. I'll just cut to the chase. Anyone who hasn't joined a club yet needs to. You can sign up by going to the school's website and selecting a club you would like to join. Please remember there is a curfew and to return to your dorm rooms no later than 10 p.m. Anyone caught out after curfew with be punished."

With that the teacher sat down at her desk and proceeded to tap away on her smart phone. It seemed homeroom was going to be quite relaxed, which was perfectly fine with you since it gave you time to socialize. You turn back to Akane, "What club are you in?"

"Ah, Tea Club. We do more than just make tea though, we also do things like flower arrangements and other stuff. It's very traditional stuff which I like. Do you have an idea of what club you want to join?"

    What club will you join?

"Most likely I'd join a Sports Club of some kind, sort of my preferred class so might as well join a club I enjoy as well," you reply after some consideration.

"Ah, well I do hope you join a club you like. You know you can join more than one, but I'd probably just start with the one until you get an idea about your schedule," Akane advises. The advice was sound since you didn't want to overburden yourself.

"I'll keep that in mind. Oh, I nearly forgot. Do you happen to know a Kukichi Kaoru?" you ask her.

"Hm, not really. Who are they?"

"My roommate for my dorm. I didn't see them at all today. It's a bit strange," you sigh. You had been distracted today and hadn't encountered anyone with that name, perhaps they decided to withdraw? You shrug your shoulders deciding either you'd meet them or you wouldn't. It didn't seem you shared any classes with them, but then again you weren't really listening when names were called out for attendance.

"I'm sure it's fine Oh, let me help you so you can sign up for your club," Akane offers, asking for your phone.

    +1 New Contact!

"Oh sure," you say as you pull your phone out and hand it over to Akane. "Maybe you could also put your info in there so we can text or something," you add on a bit awkwardly. Akane thinks about this for a moment before she seems to nod that she would. That was clear hesitation, but you two also weren't that close. She shows you how to access the club sign up site and you fill out the form for the Sports Club. Once you click submit you get a text with the information of when and where they meet. Seemed to be right after school.

"Thanks for your help," you tell Akane. You check your phone's contacts discreetly to see her contact info before putting your phone away. "Do you want mine as well?" you ask, it was only fair to offer since you had asked for hers. Another hesitant pause before another nod and you hold her phone in your hand. You type in your contact information into her phone and save it before handing it back her phone with a smile.

"I promise I will try not to bug you," you say trying to break the ice further.

"Oh no, it's fine. I just tend to be mindful of who I give my information to," she replies shyly.

"Ah, true. I once gave my number to someone in class and they turned around and signed me up for a bunch of stupid monthly text services. I mean really stupid ones. Like Cat Facts, Dad Jokes, and Daily Fortune."

"That's mean. Why would they do that?"

"Eh, apparently they pretty much just did this to everyone who fell for it. Basically a terrible joke and the only person who found it funny was them. They eventually became infamous so no one handed over their phone to them."

After you finished there was the building awkward silence that comes with not having a subject to talk about. You still had time to chat because homeroom wasn't over.

  • Choice: School Festivals

"Oh, school festivals? That sounds pretty interesting. I honestly sort of figured a school like this didn't really do festivals," you laugh. It had probably been mentioned somewhere in your orientation booklet, but you hadn't really read that in-depth.

"Oh yes. Though we only specialize in the traditional culture ones. There aren't that many festivals during the school year and the clubs who organize them actually have to compete for the limited slots. There are only so many the school will host during a year. I forgot to mention we also assist the committee with the annual winter ball. Clubs actually do quite a bit for the school community, each in their own ways really."

The bell lets out a unique chime this time to indicate that classes were over for the day. "Well, I need to go to my club. Good luck with your first club meeting," Akane excuses herself politely before leaving the classroom with the others. You head out as well, puling out the map of the school and locating the room where the Sports Club was meeting. Once you located it and determined the path you made your way there.

As you open the club room door a crack to peek inside someone clears their throat behind you. The owner was none other than Daichi! You nervously laugh and step aside to allow him to pass before letting out a soft sigh. Way to look like a weirdo.

"Are you coming in or not?" Daichi asks.

You take a deep breath as you step inside and see Daichi along with a bunch of other students who made up the membership of the club. "You'll need to sign in on that form to confirm your attendance," a student tells you, nodding their head at the sign in sheet. You quickly go over and sign in after Daichi does.

"Welcome old and new club member to the Sports Club meeting. Today's meeting is going to be short since I'm sure all of you have things to take care of since it's the first day of the school year. Today is mostly just a meet and greet for everyone to get to know your fellow club members and to pick up the club schedule." Papers are handed out to everyone and you take one, only glancing at it before storing it in your book bag.

You greet a few of the other club members and begin to relax. They were all quite welcoming.

  • Choice: Greet Daichi

It wouldn't do to be rude to Daichi now since you two were in a club together and a couple of classes. You mentally cheer yourself forward and approach Daichi and greet him. "We're in the same club as well it seems. I hope to have a fun year with you then." Good, great greeting! Better than the two other times thus far!

    "Interesting."

    "What is?"

"After being hit by that ball in PE I figured sports wasn't something you were interested in. I guess I have assumed incorrectly. How is your nose?"

You tense up and feel a bit offended that you being hit in the face by someone else's uncontrollable ball reflected so badly upon you. "My nose is fine," you answer sternly, "I'll have you know I'm really good at-"

What sport are you good at?

    Choice: Swimming

  • Choice: Swimming

"Swimming," you say as you cross your arms and stare Daichi down. He actually smirks at your reaction it seems, not really bothered by your obvious minor upset at his misjudgment of you!

"Interesting yet again. I'm on the swim team, perhaps I should recruit you for the team. There are tryouts soon and if you are a decent swimmer perhaps you should join the team," he suggestions.

That catches you off-guard and your puffed-up self who was ready to get into a verbal spar deflates. There was no reason you couldn't try out for the team. "Don't stress on it," he says as if he can read your mind, "It's your choice. I'd rather have an eager and willing team mate than someone who wants to be doing something else. Think about it and if you decide to join just let me know when you see me."

Daichi excuses himself as he turns to greet someone else who has approached before turning back to you once again. "The Sports Club is actually the best way to for all of us teams to mingle together rather than separately. The teams try to be supportive of each other, though we also are a bit competitive as well and will play against each other on any given sport sometimes. Just a word of advice though, avoid the Gambling Club. They aren't a recognized club of the school and if you're caught you'll get expelled the same day. They're like vultures."

A Gambling Club? What was this, some anime series turned live action? You simply nod your understanding and decide that it wasn't worth getting expelled... and you sucked at all card games anyway. "Well, club is basically over, if you'll excuse me I am going to the Campus Cafe."

"Can I some with you? I haven't stopped by there yet and I've been curious about it, also some tea sounds good," you ask to join Daichi. He gives up a nod before turning to leave, but he pauses to wait for you before heading out. "Is it a big cafe?" you ask as you walk beside Daichi.

"It's large enough to serve the student's and faculty."

"Must be pretty big then. I guess student's can work there if they wanted to?"

Daichi's eyes slid over to you for a moment before returning to look ahead, "No student works there. This is Eitoku, why would the children of the wealthy work that sort of job? I had my suspicion about you. I had heard there was a rare scholarship student in our year, seems it's you. Only a scholarship student would ask such a question."

You frown and glare at Daichi, "Oh that's horribly rude you know! You would think the rich could afford some manners!"

  • Choice: Continue to give Daichi a piece of your mind.

Daichi actually seemed to realize what mistaken he had done in going the route he had regarding your status as a scholarship student. "I had to work hard to earn this scholarship to attend this school. You wouldn't you think that the effort I put into getting here is more impressive than it just being handed to me? I made it here by own work and with the support of my family, not buying my way in with money, but earning it."

"I did not mean for it to come out as offensive," Daichi tries to say, raising an eyebrow at your little fit.

"Oh, really? I find that hard to believe that you didn't know that the way you said that was anything other than rude!"

"But, it really is the type of question someone unfamiliar with-"

"Ohhhh, just shut it! Stop with the excuses! Honestly, you don't even seem to be able to apologize either!"

"If you would please stop ranting for a moment and not interrupt me - which itself is also rude - you might get your apology. I am above a simple 'I'm sorry' which is lacking in genuine remorse compared to a real apology."

He actually snapped a bit at you, but his face only looked annoyed and frustrated rather than enraged. It causes you to snap your mouth shut, ooohhh you hated he had a point about you interrupting him. So, you cross your arms and stare him down with flushed embarrassment and annoyance.

"As I was saying. I did not mean to be offensive, in my mind it was a simple matter of fact. Only one who was unfamiliar with standard Eitoku life would ask such a question - such as a scholarship student - and ergo I stated as such. Perhaps I could have been more delicate in the words I chose, but I've always been fairly blunt."

    Choice: Forgive Daichi.

  • Choice: Forgive Daichi.

Your anger deflates ever so slightly as Daichi explains himself. It was sort of an apology, right? Still, you were sensitive about being a scholarship student because you heard from so many that they were given a hard time because they weren't one of the rich kids. It wasn't that you were trying to hide the fact that you were one of the few that made it into the school in this way, but you also didn't want to go around making a fuss that you were and drawing attention you wouldn't want. Attention from people who would regard you as lesser because you came from an average middle-class family.

"L-Look, it just feels like you were looking down on my the way you said it. I know you may not have meant it that way, but that's how it made me feel. It's kind of sensitive for me because I don't want people to judge me based on that."

"Understandable, the same could be said for anyone else here though, to desire not to be judged by some standard others have set, but never-the-less it happens. Rather than allowing yourself to let them affect your happiness, just find people worthy of your time and don't waste that time on those who would belittle you."

You had both reached the cafe by this time and you hadn't even noticed since you were staring at your feet for the rest of the way. Daichi opens the door for you and you step inside and see a cafe large enough to comfortably seat at least fifty people inside. The line was a bit long, but it was after school so perhaps this was normal. Daichi lets you get in line ahead of him.

"As a token of apology, and hopefully this also won't offend you with this offer, I'll buy your drink."

At first you might have declined the offer, but after you got closer and see the cost of the items here, you pale somewhat. Perhaps it was to be expected of such a school that costs like this were high. You just give Daichi a small nod of agreement to allowing him to buy you a drink, which when he asks what you want you just ask for some green tea. When you both reach the barista Daichi orders your drink as well as ordering the same for himself, but one size larger. You mentally weep at the cost. You were given an allowance by your parents who would deposit money in your account every month, but you'd have to be very frugal with it. At least your breakfast, lunch, and dinner were included in your scholarship.

"If you want, go find someplace to sit and I can wait for the drinks," Daichi suggests. You agree and turn to look around the bustling cafe. There weren't any seats inside that were open, but outside there were a few small tables. You point out where you're heading and then go to claim a table and seat. Within five minutes Daichi comes out with two drinks in hand and sets down the smaller one in front of you on the table before sitting down across from you.

"So, why did you want to come to Eitoku? I'm sure there were many places you could have attended when you were making a choice," he asks you.

"It wasn't because of the internet celebrity kids if that is what you are thinking," you being, assuming he thinks you joined to get access to famous people. "My parents travel frequently for work and this was a boarding school. I figured I would give it a shot rather than stay at home alone and going to school somewhere else. If after a semester here or even a year it doesn't work out, I could just transfer to a school that fits me better."

"So, you just didn't want to be alone then?"

"N-Not just that but, I also don't want my parents to worry about me being left home alone."

    "Hm."

You and Daichi drink your tea in silence at this point and it begins to bother you.
