Detectives

"I suppose." James said with no real commitment either way. He lifted the tea cup to his lips and smiled as the warmth and familiar scent surrounded him. He took a sip and immediately relaxed, the tension he didn't know existed slipping off his shoulders. "Mm," he said, happy with his tea. He didn't like many types of teas, and only liked the green tea from this particular restaurant. He even tried making green tea himself from different recipes and pre-made packs, but none tastes as good as the tea from this place.

The hostess came back with another cup of tea for Aria and her little black pad. "May I take your order or do you need more time?" She was a little ditzy- she had forgotten to even give them menus when she first sat them down. James didn't seem to notice, since he already knew what he wanted anyway. "Two orders of eel sushi and an order of rice for me, and-" he gestured to Aria to say what she wanted.

'Finally...' Aria thought to herself. 'He asked me this time thank goodness.'

"I'll have a-" Before she can continue she glanced at james first and smiled at him. "You're paying for this right?" Before he could even answer Aria smiled back to the hostess and gave her, her order.

"I want a Platter of Makki roll, a plate of shrimp tempura, Maguro Nigiri and a Sake Nagiri." She smiled at the waitress then to James.

"Thanks" She said to him with a tilt of her head. Aria thought she ought to be at least shy by now...

But no. After all he already found him annoying anway, might as well use that to her own advantage.

"Can I ask you something...." Aria's tone went from friendly, to dead serious.

Oh she's making me pay now? James thought, his grimace returning. That's alright, I'll get my revenge later, he thought, even though he pretty much owed her that one, since he was being such a jerk anyway. At least she wasn't too extravagant and order something like the boat full of sushi that was the specialty of the sushi restaurant.

The hosted nodded as she scribbled down the order quickly. "It should be ready soon," she said, however the good amount of people already here for lunch said otherwise. It would be a while before their food showed up.

James looked intrigued when Aria asked if she could tell him something. He knew people said this a lot and always wondered why exactly they needed permission to say something when they've already been talking before. "What is it?"

More than anything, Aria was expecting for him to say 'No'. But to her surprise he said yes.

"Really?" She said in surprise. "I mean yeah.... Okay." She took a deep breath before continuing her so called 'Question'.

For a while she stared at him first, would it be okay to ask this? Wouldn't it seem rude to ask about someone's attitude and way of treating other people? Yes, that's what her question is... 'Why are you so cold? Is something bothering you? Are you okay? You weren't born that rude aren't you?'

"What I wanted to ask is..... ummmm...." Aria hesitated yet again, she can feel James' eyes on her. She wanted to tell him to look away, even his stare made her feel all giddy.

"Do you have a girlfriend?" Aria winced. Screw it.

James stared at Aria, almost shutting the question out of his mind completely. It was a typical question, one James has heard many times, but why was he so disappointed to hear it from Aria? "No," he said plainly, frowning even more than usual. "I don't."

He turned to the conveyor belt to the side closest to the wall and picked up one of the green plated with the eel roll on it. Taking the cover off of the plate, he licked his lips, happy that this particular place had both a regular menu and a conveyor belt for picking from when they were a little backed up in the kitchen. He tore open the package of chopsticks and easily handled putting a roll in his mouth.

Aria felt like slapping herself on the face. Suddenly, all the shame that she was suppose to feel from ordering so much food and making him pay earlier now came rushing in. Suddenly she wished that a black hole would appear and suck her to oblivion.

When she saw that all her orders were now on the conveyor belt, she quickly reached for it and placed it all on the table.

"You know I'm not planning on eating all of this alone right?" She asked as she took out the chopsticks and started popping sushi into her mouth.

She could taste the fresh meat of the salmon but couldn't actually enjoy it. Her head was running with so many thoughts, especially her curiousity about James.

"Are you... Really like that?" She found herself blurting out unconsciously. "Rude? y'know... slightly jerky... and an ass."

Before she even realized it, the words already escaped her mouth. 'Shit'

"Well I am sitting right across from you. You won't be eating alone." James said, raising an eyebrow at Aria. He took her statement literally, and found it odd for Aria to say something like that. He finished the two other sushi rolls on his little green plate and then took another sip of his green tea before Aria spoke again.

"I don't think I'm an ass." James said, even though he knew for a fact he was acting just as Aria said. It was a defense mechanism; no way would he ever let someone go anywhere near his real personality. If they saw how he really was, like Mavis did, he would be devastated when he lost them, also like he lost Mavis. He just didn't want to hurt like he does now because of anyone else.

Aria's eyebrow furrowed. "You mean you can't tell your an ass? That's usually how a real ass would answer that."

She said matter of factly before picking up a tempura and took a bite. This place really did serve good food. Her eyes slowly looked at him, but her head was ducked down looking at her plate hoping he won't notice her staring. Something's different about him, something just isn't right. Aria just couldn't put her finger in it but there's really something.

"Well now you know right? .... James Jarr.... Your an ass." Aria said confidently before taking another bite from her tempura.

James smiled, amused at Aria's sudden burst of confidence. "Are you sure about that?" He said playfully, continuing to enjoy his green tea happily. He was going to take another plate off the conveyor belt, but he didn't want to spend that much money on himself, since he was already paying for Aria too. At least, that's what he told himself. The real reason was that he didn't want to devour almost the entire belt like he normally did in front of Aria, and make himself look like a pig. He wouldn't ever admit to that.

"Yep...Pretty sure" Aria nodded surely before popping another Makki Roll in her mouth. She didn't care what he thinks about her eating manners.

She eats whatever she wants when she wants, she really hates those stereotype girls who would count their carb in take, and would eat a slice of steak and think they're 'Fat' right away. Ooooh how she find that annoying.

"Crazy though. Is being a jerk a trend for good looking, handsome guys this days?" She blurted yet again. Suddenly she stopped chewing....

'Oh Dear God' There she realized that she just called him a 'Good looking handsome guy'. Mentally, Aria gave herself a hard slap across the face.

"Apparently so," James said, unfazed by the nonexistence of Aria's filter. He knew he was good-looking; there were no doubt about that. "Or maybe you are the one with the problem, since apparently all the handsome men you meet are asses." He smirked slightly as he tipped the cup of tea towards his mouth to get the very last drop.

"If the whole world around you seems to be off, then you are the one that is off." James said as he helped himself to another plate of eel rolls. Eel was his absolutely favorite type of sushi, whether it be in a roll or in plain sushi. He wondered if Aria had any other tastes in fish that she didn't explicitly show in her order.

The corner of Aria's lip slowly lifted up in a half smile. She found it funny how even he acknowledged himself about being good looking.

"Maybe...." She agreed with a nod. She then reached for her cup and tipped it towards her mouth. To her surprise, it wasn't quite that bad than the last time she had one.

"But what about you..." Aria continued as she reached for a single eel roll in front of james. "What? you don't mind right?" She said before smiling then popping the roll into her mouth. "Oh my god. this is good." She complimented after chewing.

"As I was saying, What about you? Do you think your not 'off'?" She asked james seriously.

James raised his eyebrows at Aria taking one of his rolls. He didn't mind really, he was just more surprised that she liked eel too. He didn't know many people that liked eel. He was glad to see Aria enjoying the green tea; at least he hadn't made a complete fool of himself when he ordered her green tea despite not knowing her preferences.

"I'm not 'off,'" James said with complete certainty. He thought he knew the 'real world' much better than fresh-faced Aria, even though he hadn't traveled too far out of the state. "I don't go around making assumptions about certain people just because they're good-looking."

(Didn't show up on the notif. OMG ^^^ Sorry took a while)

Aria chuckled a short sweet chuckle. So that's how she seem like? 'Making assumptions just because they're good-looking.'

She nodded, okay... Yeah probably. After a few more bites she realized that she was already full, the plates still had 2 or three sushi's more left but she couldn't bring herself to finish them anymore.

"God I'm so full... Thank you so-"

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

A loud scream made Aria jump in surprise making her rise up to her seat. "NOBODY MOVE OR I WILL KILL HER!" A tall bald man held the hostess earlier as hostage, a knife was pointed at her neck.

"Oh my god." Aria said in fear, she couldn't believe this. Then she looked back at james who looked rather calmer than she expected.

"Help me! Please don't kill me!" The Hostess begged as she cried.

"NO ONE F*CKING MOVES! DROP YOUR PHONES TO THE GROUND! NOW!"

James frowned as he watched the bald man. He obviously didn't care about his identity, since he came to the establishment uncovered. Odd, he thought, he seemed rather passive when it came to murderers. "It's okay, call 9-1-1," James got up from the chair slowly, the scratching of the chair legs moving across the tiled floor the loudest sound in the room for a split second. "He won't do anything." he said with complete confidence. He gradually approached the aggressor, carefully taking note of his body language and the crazy look in his eyes. He smirked a little, having the terrorist already figured out.

"Drop your weapon," he said firmly, but not entirely aggressively. "There's no use for keeping up this facade."

As James wanted Aria quickly reached for her phone and Dialed 9-1-1.

Ring...Ring...Ring... "Hello 911 what is your emergency?" A woman from the other line answered.

Quickly, Aria gave her the details regarding the situation, and the address.

"The police have been dispatched and are on their way." Aria quickly hanged up and watched as james appeared to be

talking to the Hostage Taker. "What is he doing..." Aria whispered worried for her 'Partner'.

"STAY THE F*CK BACK!" The man yelled to james as he applied pressure to the knife on the hostess' neck.

"Aaaaaaah!" The hostess yelled and still in tears. "Its hurts! Please don't kill me!"

"You won't kill her," James said, having a difficult time not smiling and taking the guy seriously. "I know you wouldn't. You don't have the stomach for it." He said as he continued his trek closer and closer to the intruder. He planned on pretending to reach for the knife but instead kicking the man right below the knee, which was slightly exposed due to his holding of the hostess on one side and his spreading of his feet to keep balance.

"Why put so much work in a false front when everyone here has already seen through it?" he said in a silky smooth voice, even smiling charmingly a little, even as he was laughing at the weak man in his head.

Aria took a step closer but quickly hesitated. She's seeing a different scenario about to happen than what james had in mind.

"Don't provoke him...." Aria whispered though knowing he won't be able to hear her. She remembered a training she had regarding hostage taking. Some situations include mental problems that causes such scene. What if the man was 'bothered'? Aria doubt he'd care about anything at all... Worst case is he'll probably kill the hostage.

"I SAID DON'T GET F*CKING CLOSER!" The Bald man took a step back and pulled the hostess along. "ANOTHER STEP AND SHE DIES AND I MEAN IT!"

Aria can tell he was dead serious.... "He's gonna do it..."

"No," James kept advancing, almost close enough to knock the guy down. "What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want money, or do you just want to kill someone?" He asked the bald man, his advancing significantly slowed. Out of the corner of his eye he could ready see a police car parking swiftly, its lights blaring. 'Seems pretty weak either way."

Slowly, Aria walked towards James and was now only a few steps behind him.

"He wants something..." She said loud enough for james to hear. Other customers of the restaurant were either down on the ground, or under tables.

"I want- I want them to apologize." The bald man said panting. His eyes started getting teary. "I don't care if I fucking kill this woman my life is over anyway!"

"Apologize?... Who? Who do you want an apology from. We'll- We'll contact them for you..." Aria finally spoke up, her voice shaking but she fought hard to sound brave. It was time to put her training to the test.

"My wife.... and his man."

Aria knew they couldn't actually give him what he wanted at this moment, They needed distraction... Then an opening for a direct assault to the Hostage Taker.

"Listen, trying to kill an innocent hostess isn't going to get you that apology you want." James said, his gaze strengthening. He already was thinking the poor confused man was stupid. In what world did wanting revenge result in attacking a completely unrelated restaurant?

No matter, he thought. Let's just keep distracting the man until the police arrived. The police officer from the car James saw park earlier was already calling for backup, and had the gun out of his holster, ready to shoot if needed. "Why do you have attack her? Is she your wife or something?" James had a new idea, to keep the man talking until the rest of the force arrived.

"I Don't answer to you!" The Bald man yelled, his expression full of anger and hatred. "I want them... Call them... NOW OR SHE DIES!" Yet again the hostage taker pressed the name harder on the hostess' neck making her yell louder than she did earlier.

Aria's breathing started getting more ragged, she was starting to get more and more nervous for the hostess, she can tell that the man wasn't sane no longer. He said so himself....

"I don't care if I fucking kill this woman my life is over anyway!"

He'll do it... Aria was really positive that if this doesn't gets resolved soon, it'll be the death of that waitress. She glanced out the window and saw the Police cars, two for now but surely called for more back up. A surge of relief came to her. "Oh thank god...."

The bald man slowly made his way to the kitchen... "Nobody follows me!" After a few seconds he came back with a lighter in hand.

"What is he doing?" Aria asked james.... After a few more seconds the scent of gas started filling the room... "Oh my god.... He leaked the gas pipe." Aria whispered in shock with horrible realization.

"Why don't we all die eh? together..."

Without anything better to do at the moment, James lunged himself at the bald man. He meant to just knock him to the floor and push away the lighter, not necessarily with the goal of trying to detain him himself. He was definitely able to tack the man to the ground, and tear away the lighter form his hand, but it skidded across the floor away from them.

He wasn't entirely stupid, however. The first thing he did once he had the man on the floor was to grab the knife in his hand. Even though he couldn't tear it away like he did the lighter, he was able to keep the hand from moving more towards the hostess's neck nor his own sensitive flesh. In the struggle he tried to shove the lady away just enough for him to elbow the man in the lungs hard, trying to make him lose focus for just a second so he would be able to pry the knife away from him.

Aria's eyes grew wide as she watched James attack the hostage taker. She tried to calm herself down but just can't. When she saw the lighter skidding towards her direction she quickly reached for it and kept in away. Other people were screaming inside the restaurant, even some little kids crying that made calming down even harder for Aria. She wanted to yell and make everyone shut up but she can't really blame them, even she herself is having a hard a time trying her best not to scream.

Aria's eyes were locked on the Knife, the primary weapon as of this moment. The weapon than kill anyone of them... Including James. Aria waited for an opening... She needed to get the hostess out of the man's arm. That would give James more space to attack and not worry about the hostess getting stabbed. "James hurry!" She found herself yelling... Hopefully he got the message.

(OMG I DIDN'T GET A NOTIF FOR THIS! IF I DIDN'T CHECK I WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN YOU REPLIED. UGH -___- )

((Sorry sorry, didn't realize you responded >.<))

James elbowed the man in the stomach, causing him to release his hold on the knife. He knew he didn't have the time to 'just' take the knife away from him, so he simply knocked it out of his hand. The knife went clattering away just as the lighter did moments before. It was then that the police officers finally began rolling in, guns out and looking for the perpetrator. Without the use of the knife to hold the Hostess in danger, the man dropped the woman. She rolled away quickly, just wanting to get out of the way of the fight. Without the hostess there, James began to actually fight the bald man.

"Over here!" The hostess cried. The police officers near the entrance heard her cries and began to run toward her, needing the find the man before any real damage was done.
