Aria Montgomery - Rookie Detective

James Jarr - The Broken Legend

-------------------------------------------------------

The day finally came, the day Aria has been waiting for to finally start pursuing her dreams. The day she takes her first step in completing the promise she made her late father Detective Arnold Montgomery.

She stood outside the Double Glass Doors of one of the best Detective Agencies in West America. It wasn't easy for her to get here despite her outstanding grades and college records, but she never gave up. This was something she truly wanted.

"Alright Aria... Let's do this." She whispered encouragingly to herself as she draw in a deep breath, and slowly letting it out. Slowly she took a step and opened the double doors. Aria stood in the middle of the Agencies Reception area, feeling lost right away. She opened the folder she had with her and scanned through some pages, she was already assigned to a local team and was told by the chief she was under that she will be paired up right away with another detective.

Aria was curious whether who it was, she can't believe it. Her first day and she's already got herself a partner... She was pretty sure they were gonna be really good friends.... Or so she thought. Feeling lost she walked over to a tall woman asking for directions.

"Excuse me..." Aria said softly.

"Yes?"

Aria showed her the folder containing her assigned office. "Do you know where this is? I'm lost."

The woman's eyes grew wide. "Oh boy. Your the new recruit? The rookie assigned to Team 3 crime operations?"

Aria nodded in response. How did she even know? "You have no idea who your partners gonna be don't you?... Well honey your about to find out. Take the elevator, 5th floor. First door on your right.... Good luck." The woman said with a smirk and walked away. Aria's eyebrow furrowed. What was she talking about? Quickly she followed her directions with a smile wide on her face.

James was already in his office, looking over the file for his next case. It was a murder mystery; apparently a tall, dark-complexioned young man had been found dead outside his apartment just that morning. The man, named Titus Jackson, had been known to be affiliated with the local gangs in the area, so James wasn't at all surprised. The only thing that was suspicious is that he wasn't killed in the way that the two rival gangs liked. The blue-stripped gang called the Sharks preferred drowning their victims, and then cutting out their tongue. The red-clad gang called the Flames preferred slicing up the body in multiple ways, and spreading the shed blood all over, usually in a message. Otherwise, the gang murders resorted to the simplistic death caused by a well-aimed bullet. Jackson had been killed by a single stab straight through the heart with not a knife, but a wooden weapon-- wooden material had been found around the wound.

He was so busy looking over the crime photos and hanging them on his work board for closer inspection that he didn't bother looking at the roster for the rest of his team. He knew the agency wouldn't pair him with anyone, or so he thought.

Slowly the elevator door opened on the 5th floor. 'Finally! This is it!' Aria thought in excitement. Deep down she wanted to scream so loud that it could probably be audible from downstairs. She quickly fixed her Ponytail tightening it up, her soft light brown hair flowing along. She tucked her white ruffled top that was now crumpled, probably from her being all jittery on the cab ride on the way to the agency with excitement.

She wanted to look like she wasn't nervous at all, like she was already expecting to be accepted at such a high and well know Detective Agency.

Aria opened the door and slowly peeked in. Numbers of people were on their desk doing their own work, some walking while reading papers, others on a break drinking coffee.

Slowly she walked inside and shut the door close behind her. 'Okay.... Now what.'

She opened the folder she had yet again to look for the Chief Inspector she was under.

"Oh there he-" Before she can even finish a man rather in his 40's Stood in front of her and cleared his throat.

"Welcome Miss Montgomery. I am Chief Inspector Mckniley." Aria quickly held out a hand to shake his.

"I am so excited to be here! Thank-"

"Now if you would follow me." The CI quickly cut her off making Aria feel rather uncomfortable. "Okay then..." She whispered to herself and walked along behind him.

"Detective Jarr!" He called out rather loudly. "Say hello.... To your new partner."

Aria peeked over his shoulders and gave the rather dashing young man a smile. "Hi.... I'm Aria montgomery." She held out her hand for him.

"Not now," James said grumpily. He hadn't really heard what the Chief Inspector had said; he was too absorbed in examining the crime scene photos. "I'm busy." He grumbled. Even though he didn't outrank the inspector, his talent for solving crimes was unparalleled, giving him an unspoken superiority to most people. Of course, it was still work. He as still supposed to listen to the higher ups.

He kept his back to them as he looked down at his tablet, going to look through the databases for any other information about Jackson that the incompetent file-organizer may have over looked or improperly filed.

Aria frowned. Is that even a way to treat his new partner? 'Well that was welcoming' Aria thought sarcastically.

"Mr. Jarr its about time you have a new partner.... Its been a while since the-" The CI hesitated for a while and glanced behind him to peek at Aria. "The incident" he continued looking rather uncomfortable.

Aria on the other hand just listened having exactly no idea what the two were talking about. 'Incident? What incident?'

"Take the desk next to Detective Jarr, Miss Montgomery. And you James, I expect you to work hard with your new partner... Not like what you've done the last time when we offered you a new partner."

Okay now Aria was just lost. Does this guy have something against Partners?! I mean isn't that normal in this profession?

James grumbled to himself, just ignoring the partner as he continued flipping through the database. A childish part of him actually believed that if he just didn't acknowledge 'its' presence that it would just go away. He stretched out and sighed, still thinking about the mystery.

There surprisingly wasn't much information the file didn't already include, genuinely shocking James. "Wow, for once they actually did their jobs," he muttered as he put the tablet back down on his desk. There wasn't much he could do at the moment, since the DNA found at the crime scene was still being tested. With a relaxed sigh, he went around to sit at his desk, still ignoring the newcomer.

((Going to bed. night!))

Aria sat there next to the desk of her 'New Partner' Who doesn't seem to be that relatively welcoming. She layed out all the files she had tucked in inside the folder on her table and scanned through them. What else was she gonna do? Mister Detective over here isn't really that much of a good company.

Aria slowly glanced at him, the last thing she wanted is to get caught staring at his face. He was handsome, really. Dashing more like it. Aria wondered if all the girls in this agency had a knack for admiring him... Even his body was well built. But the dark circle under his eyes were clearly a sign of how hard working he is. Quickly she cleared her throat and shook the thought off her head. What was she thinking?!

"So ummm. I heard were suppose to be working on a case together right? About a murder of a boy named Titus Jackson?" She held out a paper and showed it to him hoping at least somehow he'd at least take a peek. "Yeah.. Ummm I was given a heads up." She said shyly.

((Nighty! I'll wait for your response :) ))

"It's a young man, not a boy." James said without even looking up at Aria. "He's 20. That's a young man." he continued to rummage through the files on his desk.

James turned on the computer on his desk; he preferred to do most of his work on a computer, since he hated the arthritic feeling he'd get when he'd type on the tablet. He needed to finish a report from a previously solved crime. This crime wasn't specifically interesting to James, so it took him a little longer to get all the details together and compile it all into a single report. A female had claimed that her ex-boyfriend and bear and raped her the day after they broke up, but further investigation showed she was just bat-shit crazy and that her new boyfriend, the one she left the first man for, had beat her intentionally to try and screw over the first boyfriend, and get some pity points in the process. Scumbags like that really ticked James off, but at least it was over and done with.

Even though James's official shift had started only an hour ago, he was still tired form working overtime the night before. He had stayed late to interview the alleged victim of his previous case, and he ended up helping the other detectives in the force- and by helping, he meant pointing out all the obviously overlooked details and correcting hypotheses quite rudely. Even though he was a nuisance, he was one of the major reasons the agency was so successful, so no one really minded.

"Oh... Right... Of course, young man." Aria nodded in agreement. Although she wanted to protest about him just seeing her point she chose not to. She had a feeling he wasn't exactly 'welcoming' her they way Aria expected.

'He barely even looked at me!'

Slowly she puts the paper back down to her desk, at the least she hoped he would look at it. But instead he kept on ignoring it and did whatever he could on his computer. Aria found herself curious about him, she probably should've done some background check on him. Like check his bio data, or even ask around other people who might know him. I bet a lot of people does in this profession.

"James.... Jarr." Aria whispered to herself and tilts her head slightly to the side like she was pondering on a deep thought.

"Where have i heard that name before?"

Aria quietly cleared her throat to get his attention...

"Excuse-" Before she could even continue a folder was placed to her desk by another higher ups.

"You know what to do." The man said and walked away. 'Well that was rude'

Quickly Aria reached for the file and opened it.

Case No. 23478

Murder Case

Victim: Jamie lee

_________________________

Her eyes grew wide. "What?!" She said rather loudly than she wanted, in realizing it she quickly ducked her head slightly in embarrassment.

"I thought.... We were suppose to work on a case together and at a time?!" She said with a glance at the detective next to her, her expression surprised and out of it.

'I can't handle this alone! NOT YET!'

James chuckled cruelly when he heard Aria squeal. "You're paid to work. You can't honestly believe that you would only be taking one case at a time." He said all while still typing at his computer in a safely consistent pace. At this rate, he would be finished within the hour. He smiled to himself at the thought; it would be an excuse to take a quick coffee break.

He was done with his report much quicker than he thought, so he decided to take another look at the file of the case he should be working on with his new partner. He leaned back in his chair and set his feet up on his desk: it was the most comfortable position for him. "Uhy," he grumbled as he flipped through the folder. There was nothing he had missed that was in the folder, so there was nothing to look over again.

James looked up beyond the computer for the first time since Aria came in, but it wasn't to look at anything but the clock.

Aria found her self struck and dumbfounded. 'My first case Already!? Plus it doesn't look like he's interested in helping me... '

He did have a point... Aria wondered how she could've been so stupid, of course she's gonna be given cases at a time.

She shook her head and decided to read the rest of the file. Next to her she can hear the Keyboard clicking frequently as she read through.

Jamie Lee appeared to have been murdered and raped brutally... Aria shook her head. "This isn't brutally, this is just preposterous."

She whispered to herself silently. Apparently the victim was found behind an abandoned gas station downtown, the only piece of clothing she had was her top, anything from her waist down was no where to be found. According to autopsy reports she was raped first, before being brutally murdered. Fragments of glass was also found on her parts thus resulting in probable torture before death. Aria quickly dropped the folder to her desk and grunted. She couldn't continue any longer. She knew she should've prepared a stronger stomach for this.

After a while she noticed that it was utterly quiet, Mr. Know-it-all next to her seem to have stopped typing and rested on his desk, his feet up on the table... 'How can someone good looking be so mean?'

Slowly, she saw his head lifting up. A smile slowly crossed her face then to her dismay.... It was only to look a the wall clock. 'Damn it.'

"Aren't you at least going to look at me?"

James finally adjusted his gaze down to Aria. "There's not much to look at," he said, actually wanting to come off as rude for once. He cleared his throat and went back to looking though the file, even though he already read everything in it at least twice. Even though he was visually stimulated, he wasn't really paying attention to what he was reading. He was more interested in what he saw rather than what he was seeing.

He wasn't one to be caught staring, nor was he one to have his emotions be read so easily. He had captured the image of Aria in the split moment that he did look at her, and then examined the image more thoroughly in his head. Already he could spot the differences between Aria and his previously failed partners. She had a different... air about her, he supposed. He couldn't quite place it, but he knew something was there keeping her apart. He admired how Aria's ponytail didn't seem at all inhumanly perfect, showing inherent personality defects. Even though her face was partially obscured by the matching computer she had on the desk, he was able to see her soft eyes, and how determined she really was, despite her girlish reaction to her first standalone case. He wouldn't say he was smitten-- because he wasn't-- but he definitely was intrigued.

He smiled to himself, almost as if he just remembered something funny. It wasn't a genuine smile, and look slier than a true one. He already knew this would be an interesting, if not short-lived, partnership.

Aria found herself scoffing in his utter rudeness. "Asshole." She said with a shake of her head in disbelief. How can a guy even say that to a girl!?

And as far as she knows she's not that bad looking... Is she? She found herself clenching her jaw and tightening her fist in a ball. Using all her strength she fought hard not to yell at his handsome yet rude face. Maybe its because he had girls after him maybe? Girls that are way good looking and more attractive than she is, maybe he's just used to girls like those... Is that why?
'Yeah, Yeah probably... Don't be so discouraged aria.' She tried tried to cheer herself up, last thing she wants is to be all immature and yell at him for something so simple. Aria always hated her temper, something she probably inherited from her father.

Slowly, with a long sigh she unclenched her jaw and let's fingers break loose from the tight ball she made it to... At the corner of her eye she caught him smiling... 'That's a first.'

She found herself staring way longer than she expected...
'Stop staring Aria... STOP staring!'

She quickly shook it off and cleared her throat and rummaged through the scattered paper on her desk without any objectives or whatsoever.

Does he find her funny? Or maybe ugly to the point of Hilariousness? Feeling rather insecure she took out her phone and looked at her reflection on the screen. "Jerk.... I don't look that bad."

RIIIIIING RIIIIIIIING RIIIIIIIIING.....

Surprising Aria she dropped her phone to the ground. "Shit!" Completely ignoring her phone she picked up the telephone and answered.

"Hello?... Hello?..."

RIIIING RIIIIIING RIIIIIING....

'Oh... Its not mine." Feeling embarrassed yet again she slowly glanced to Mr. Rudeness over here... Realizing it was his telephone.

"God Damn it!" She quickly puts the telephone back and bends down to reach for her phone.

James picked up the phone boredly, and put it to his ear. He didn't seem to notice Aria's little crisis with the phone. "Hello?"

He was quiet as he listened to the other voice on the other end. It was a quick message, saying that the DNA scans were now available in the database. James nodded before he realized the person on the phone wasn't able to see him. Without missing a beat, he said "Alright," before hanging up and returning to his computer.

"Ummmm who was it?" Aria asked thinking maybe it was involved in a case 'which' they were suppose to be working on together.

But as it seems her new partner would rather keep it all to himself and work on it alone.

"I mean if its only about a case or something... If its private you don't have to tell me." She said right away hoping he won't think she's being nosy.

She looked up at the clock and noticed it was almost lunch time, quickly she puts piece of documents inside the folders and closed down her own laptop. She thought that if he didn't want to be friends, then she ought to make the first move. After all they were to work together they have to alteast be acquaintances.

"Ummm have you... Eaten yet?" She asked shyly without looking at his direction.

"If it were a personal call, they would have called my cell phone." James sighed as he got up. "It's about the DNA for the Jackson case. It's been thoroughly scanned and available for examination in the data files."

He picked up his light jacket from the back of his chair and slid it on. It was was autumn, James's favorite season, making the weather just cool enough to wear a sweater but still not cold enough for the freezing snow he so loathed. "No, I haven't eaten." He said, just being polite. He planned on eating by himself, however, so he said nothing as he left to go get lunch.

Aria wondered whether he was natural rude and arrogant, or if he was doing this on purpose.

She wanted to ask more about the case but noticed he was about to stand up. Till he took his jacket and was about to exit.

"No, I haven't eaten."

A smile slowly came on Aria's lips, she was about to ask him to eat lunch together till the walked away completely leaving her behind.

"Bet your having the time of your life ey Rookie?" Another detective teased as he passed in front of her. Was everyone even expecting this to happen except for her?!

Quickly she got up and was about to look for her jacket when she remembered she didn't come with one. "Damn it I forgot!" She wondered if whether she was that excited for her first that she couldn't even feel the chilly Fall air. Ignoring that she stormed outside and quickly followed her 'partner'

She was now on the street, her arms wrapped around herself for warmth. "ugh how could I be so stupid." She scolded herself and scanned the number of passerby till she saw James at a few good distance. "HEY! HEY WAIT FOR ME!"

Quickly she ran after him, her hills clicking against the cold pavement of the street.

When she managed to finally caught up she was out of breath, reaching out for him Aria held his shoulder as she catched her own breathing.

"T-Take me with you...." She said panting and looking up at him. Other people had their eyes on the two detectives.

James frowned when he heard Aria shout from the office. All he wanted was some peace and quiet for lunch; was that too much too much to ask? Apparently so, since Aria had come running across the street to him and was now clinging to him.

He sighed loudly, wanting everyone who has giving them the evil eye to know that he didn't condone this type of behavior. "I see normal behavior isn't your forte," he said snidely. "I never said I was going to eat with you." He grumbled, gently pushing Aria away from him. He didn't want to seem overly aggressive.

Even though he didn't like interacting with Aria, he couldn't help but think she at least was a little cute. He didn't know why he found her socially awkward personality endearing, but he did. Huh, he thought to himself.

Aria made snickering facial expressions as she watched james walk away yet again from her.

'Normal behavior isn't my forte?! Can't he tell that i could barely breathe and had to cling on to him
because he made me chase instead of stopping and waiting for me?!' Aria thought to herself annoyed. She could've just turned around and gone back to the office or eat alone. But she decided to go through with it. 'You find me annoying then huh?'

Quickly again she ran after him, stretching her arms wide as if blocking his direction. "You're taking me with you." She said with finality. Her eyes locked on to his... After a while she realized they were both starting at each others eyes for long. She quickly dropped down her hands back to her side and cleared her throat as if to clear the tension. "Let's go..." She said awkwardly and stood next to him.

James sighed again and continued walking, not waiting for her to follow him. He was planning on going to his favorite sushi place, with the little conveyor belt going around the entire restaurant carrying small, colored plates indicating price. For a flash of a second, he remembered eating there with Mavis- after all, it was Mavis who showed him the restaurant in the first place. His eyes widened for the second, but then returned to his normal, passive state as he shook his head clear. It's been two years, he told himself. Surely, he should be over his death already.

It was somewhat of a long walk to the place, and only when they were three quarters of the way there he stopped to ask Aria if she had any preference where they ate. "Where do you want to eat," he said in a monotonous tone. He wanted to be rude, but not and asshole. Sometimes he had trouble figuring out the exact difference between the two.

Not knowing at all where they were headed, aria just kept up with his pace. Walking behind him, her arms wrapped around herself because of the cold chilly air. She wondered whether she's done anything wrong to this guy. Was there anything she said that offended him?

The first thing she's gonna do once they get back at the office was definitely to ask around if James is just purely a loner, or was really born to be rude.

"Where do you want to eat,"

Aria couldn't believe it.... 'did he seriously just ask me that?!' She fought hard not to let out the smile that threatens to show in front of James as of this moment. She gave it a thought for a while and gave the place a quick scan, moving her head from left to right. Then she remembered something...

"Up ahead. That local Sushi Place .... its really really good." Aria said rather cheerfully. "Swear."

So she likes that place too, he thought, showing no change in expression on face. James kept looking straight ahead, until they got close to the small sushi place. He looked up and the dirty, barely legible name of the place, and smiled. It had been almost new the first time he came here with Mavis. Although, he wondered what exactly happened that made the sign look so worn in just two years.

He turned into the little place and opened the door for himself, and then intentionally not holding it for Aria. He went straight to the hostess, and made a reservation for two, hopefully all the way in the back of the restaurant. He didn't want to be seen eating lunch with some rookie. The hostess smiled; she knew James as a repeat customer and was pleasantly surprised to see him come here with a lady, and a good-looking one at that. She wondered just for a short minute how his sour attitude was able to attract someone so cute, but then she remembered that even she, too, had a little crush on James for a time. "Right this way," she said, masking her slight jealously quite well.

James mentally sighed as he realized the hostess probably thought they were eating together together. Oh well, he thought as he sat down in the seat, at least we're in the back of the restaurant.

Aria almost hit her face when the door shuts close before she could even enter. "Oh...My...God" She tilts her head in disbelief and annoyance. "The least he could have done was hold it yet he chose to rather slam it on my face. Great. Just effing Great." She whispered to herself sarcastically and opened the door herself.

Aria let's her senses absorb that familiar place after a long while since her last visit. Even the staff are now different. The smile was wide and real. This place.... The memories she had with her father. Aria quickly glanced down on her feet and shook her head, tears threatening in her eyes... But the smile on her lips was still consistent. Looking up she shrugged it off right away and saw James talking to a girl wearing a Japanese Kimono. She was smiling at him, and no not that customary smile a Hostess would give a customer. But a smile-smile a girl would give to someone he likes.

She smiled wider, she knew it. A lot of other girls had the same effect on them. Well he is good looking... Undeniably too. But not that Aria was also smitten by his good looks... Of course not... Was she?

Quickly she followed James and hostess towards the further back part of the place, she wondered why because there were a lot of free spaces at the front. She sat across from James and checked her phone before setting in down on the table.

"So ummm..... Have you been here before?" She asked right away. This is just to awkward for her. Aria then wondered whether she should've just eaten alone somewhere else, she clearly didn't know what she was putting herself to. And why the hell does he affect her that much?! 'UGH!'

"Yes." James said plainly and left it at that. The hostess came a few seconds later with green tea for James and extra two glasses of ice water for both of them.

"I'm sorry, did you want green tea too?" The hostess asked, though she maintained the smile. She genuinely didn't know if Aria liked tea or not, so she only brought the customary water she normally brought to every customer. The only reason she brought green tea for James was because he was a regular, and the entire staff knew he liked their green tea.

James grimaced slightly. He didn't right away realize that the hostess didn't know what Aria liked and thought that she was just trying to annoy Aria. "Just bring her some green tea," he said, without even thinking. It was only after the hostess left that he realized that Aria may have not even liked tea.

She was about to answer the hostess' question regarding whether she wanted Tea or not. "Ugh actually-"

"Just bring her some green tea,"

Aria looked at James with questioning eyes. He didn't even ask her yet! Aria scoffed and kept her eyes at him.

Is this really his persona? Who does that? She decided to just stay quiet, yes she didn't like tea. The only tea she liked is Iced Tea, yeah the sweet ones. Every time she drinks Hot Natural tea all she wants to do is spit it out again.

Instead of testifying to James, Aria just decided to drop it. "Your here often aren't you... They know you. And the things you like."

She pointed a finger at the tea. Then she remembered the hostess earlier, the way she asked whether she too wanted tea. Now that she thinks about it it was more like a tease than a question. Like the way you ask someone who fell down on their face flat and say "Aaaaw did you hurt yourself?" To Aria, that's what it sounded like. Was the hostess jealous of her? Aria smiled to herself.
