Would the uniform be okay contextually anyway during that time period?

@Larry

Probably so, at least, that particular picture as a dress uniform. Wool won't get you far with the Blight! It'll rot right off of you!

EDIT: I didn't mean to insinuate that the Blight could dissolve clothing but... uhm... how bout them organic materials, amirite?

That's good to know, thanks for the information. But in terms of infantry, wouldn't that be expected? The uniform they would be wearing wouldn't be anything flashy; funds more-or-less are directed to the equipping of females than males I can imagine.

I'd imagine you'd be better with something more like this to be honest. It is a fantasy kind of setting after all. It's not like the armour couldn't be made with magic, therefore cutting costs

I can't really argue if that's standard issue; I'd prefer the other uniform but whatever is there, I'll go along with it.

Hehe, but you could also see that as Arcana being able to equip it's soldiers with such alloys; soldiers from foreign countries may have the liberty of using their own uniform.

But I digress!

Male soldiers (and even female mages if they're so inclined) can use leather based armor? Fits in fantasy, lighter/cheaper than metal plate, easily obtained/replaced, and provides a little more protection than wool. Also seems more appropriate than a fancy dress class uniform for rank and file fighters.

Even if your character is from another country, if he's serving as a warden in this country's military (voluntary or otherwise) he's still subject to wearing whatever the queen declares his station's uniform will be anyways.

If he's not serving the queen that begs the question what might he be doing in this country? You'd have to talk to welian about possible neighboring alliances, but in this kind of setting a matriarchal government would probably catch on everywhere? Then that circles back to whatever the ruler of said domain feels should be standard issue outfits for grunts. A leather based armor still seems more practical than a formal wool uniform in a fantasy setting, to me at least. Then again, it's fantasy. If you can spin it right more power to you?

Dead right Hobo.

But in the case of the Blight, what if the Amelanch needs the assistance of others troops from neighbouring alliances? Would they waist time distributing standard-issue uniform for the sake of appearance or rather to increase relations with each other by the populace's show of gratitude for the extra supply of troops?

A militarized detachment from an allied country would work with the queen, not for her. So under those circumstances no, I do not see Amelanch just giving armor away to them when she has her own forces to supply first. And if wool uniforms are what this neighboring country supplies it's troops with then it's likely that they need Amelanch's support more than the other way around, assuming the Blight is a problem everywhere. That's even less of a reason for Amelanch to be so generous. They would also have their own commander so they're not 'part of' Amelanch's own army, which was the case I was pointing to above. A warden in her army is not a foreign fighter or a mercenary. Those are different entities entirely.

You guys don't even know if there are sheep in this setting....

If you're really dead set on something like that, my advice would be to give a reason behind the material of the uniform rather than just saying its standard. Maybe your character is a member of a light calvary unit? Or provides support from an airship? Or some other type of role where ease of movement and mobility take precedence over protection.

Look up the term 'flying column' and that's what I have in mind.

;3 Your nationalism is showing, dear.

Remember, this is first and foremost, a high fantasy setting. The focus is on a world with a Tolkien-esque vibe, with grand themes of good versus evil. Your primary opponents are not other armies - they are monsters. Foul, demonic monsters that carry disease and destroy whatever ground they walk across, with a dark and perverted kind of magic. This is not organized war.

The technology (and military strategy is technology) is secondary. It is a mere detail of the world. That's why I haven't said anything up to now - what soldiers are outfitted with is almost comically inconsequential because the VAST majority of soldiers are Witches, who have magic - and magic trumps all in this society.

Wardens make up less than half of the Army. They might even make up less than a quarter. It's not men who are drafted into becoming Wardens, it's women, considered the more able of the sexes in this story, who are drafted to become Witches. Men are at home taking care of the farms, taking care of the sick and wounded, and burying the dead.

As for political structure, Arcana USED to be smaller, different countries. In fact, if you go back far enough, you're looking at clan warfare, the ancient form of what is now family feuds and bloodline rivalries.

Aye, you're dead right Wel!

I'm getting put in my place a lot today! But it helps you learn nonetheless. ?)

That's the spirit! I promise I don't hate you or anything, I just need you to sit down and take the back seat for a bit while I get things sorted out to the way I want them.
