[Desolation] Chapter 1: Digging In

Hooper

There is a cracking sound as hooper wrenches her blade out of the man. She takes a chunk of his shirt holding the red skull emblem and wanders over to Ryoma. She wheezes and shakes the blood from her machete.

"You okay? We should take these things back"

She is leering again...

Readin' that sitch. 7.

Ryoma ties the sash and casts a coy look back at Hooper. Never before has anyone borne her any... attraction? Appreciation?... after seeing the sutra marked into her skin. Then again, the extent to which Hooper is still a "person" might be detable, but all the same... did the woman find her own little enlightenment?

She must confess, Ryoma never quite thought of the masked killer as having Buddha-nature. Every day with new wonders.

Hooper

Not receiving an answer, Hooper pokes Ryoma on the shoulder. "You hear me?"

Perhaps she was shellshocked from the tumble. Or maybe the bodies meant something. It was hard to see why Ryoma would care.

Ryoma, on a 7-9, you get to ask 1:

  • where’s my best escape route / way in / way past?
  • which enemy is most vulnerable to me?
  • which enemy is the biggest threat?
  • what should I be on the lookout for?
  • what’s my enemy’s true position?
  • who’s in control here?

"Let's all stay calm here," I say. "Look, Balls, Red... she won't hurt you, not if we all just calm down. You know what kind of shit you'll get into if you shoot us on grounds. Graves isn't too light. Let's just... put the gun down, alright?"

Rolling to manipulate Balls

Ryoma raises her hand to quiet Hooper, ears pricked.

Alright, then. What should I be in the lookout for?

Fauci, are you trying to use the threat of Grave's wrath as your leverage in your manipulation?

Ryoma, someone is hiding under one of the RVs.

Ryoma & Hooper, a bloody hand pops out from under the RV and grips the sand as it drags the body it's attached to into the open. A middle-aged woman, all fucked up from the fight, grips a small knife. Her eyes are full of fear and searching for the bastards she knows will kill her. Half her face is smeared with her own blood as she must have taken a bat or something straight to the cheek. Her left leg is clearly broken. A bit of the bone has pierced the skin.

She immediately begins sobbing. "Don't hurt me. Please, please!"

Hooper

Staring over at the woman, Hooper shrugs. "She have the keys? I want to take these vehicles back to Fauci. Good prices, lots of food" The woman is just a side thought. Neither friend nor foe.

"No one's going to hurt you," says Ryoma, crouching to face her. "For you see... some act of virtue, some flagging bit of goodness attached to you, has spared you know. I believe the hardhold has a doctor... congratulations. You lived where many died. Now, the keys...?"

Ryoma & Hooper, she sobs some more. Definitely sobs of relief. After a moment, she speaks, still having trouble with the shock. "I ... I never had them. I never drive. The others. Check them."

Fauci, you seem to have struck a chord. You feel the pistol waver a moment against your head. But his voice still sounds confident. "What assurance do I have that you won't go straight to Graves and have him hunt me down as I'm leaving?" He's asking for concrete assurance right now (7-9).

Hooper

"Stop crying so much. Too loud for the wastes" She walks off, going to each body and checking all the pockets.

"Graves? Balls, I must commend you for bringing poetry back to this camp. I thought it had faded away like the yellow sun, the blue sky and the white clouds." Red Bean was more scary after she reached into the void, the energy of a thousand screaming voices filled her eyes, it flushed her skin making the pale red turn crimson, her voice was huskier as if others were speaking with her.

"You created a monster. A small girl you beat and ruined, tried to sell but couldn't, and then left when you ran out. You made her hard, you made her cold, you made her into the one thing that you can't win against. It is all too poetic." Red Bean laughed at him.

"And she is here. You took away her face, but she found a new one. Giving yourself up to Graves would be a mercy, because she will find you very soon, and you aren't carrying enough blood in your body to quench her desire for yours. You want assurances, you have them. We won't tell Graves a thing, but she is going to find out and you can't get far enough to live. You are out of time."

Trying to help Fauci though I can't do enough to change the results.

Hooper

"Take the best shape ones with the most gas. Leave the bodies"

Hooper takes off towards an RV, starting it up and driving it back towards the prison.

"Of course," says Ryoma, cheerfully. She helps the survivor to her vehicle; let it never be said Ryoma will pass up a chance to earn merit.

Graves

Graves has assembled a few of the gang and gotten out to the battleground when he sees Ryoma and Hooper boarding the RV.

They made quick work of the raiders. A deadly pair or not, that was too easy for Graves' liking.

What is the enemy's true position?

He moves towards the RV to see what Ryoma and Hooper have found. "Good huntin'?"

Fauci could feel Balls go cold, shock running through his body.

"You can take the truck. That is my assurance to you. If you take the truck, there's not a chance Graves will be able to catch up, even if I did tell him," he says, knowing the gas in that old clunker couldn't take Balls more than 10 kilometers from the compound. "I'll even unlock the high security functions."

After knowing Bean for years, he knows she knows things she just shouldn't, and trusts it. If that girl she speaks of is going to rip this bloody bastard apart, it is going to get done, regardless of any amount of hi-tech security. The least he could offer this sad fuck is some security, even if he had just threatened his life.
