Jean Otus
Would-Be Prince
Matthias leaned up against the handrail on the stairs. As usual it was a pleasant day in Limbo, the millions of spirits that called this place home were out in spades, working, playing, one could almost call it living. Death wasn't so bad if you just made it a new life. He looked over at Nate. He was a good enough partner, a little by the book for his liking but very reliable. He supposed he should try to hang out with him a little more when they were off duty. It could be like one of those old cop movies they had on Deathflix. The officers in those movies were usually friendly with each other and with the people. They had this great motto "To Protect and Serve". Whenever he saw that a niggling thought came to mind, like a loose thread he couldn't get rid off. He had this odd feeling that his own relationship with the law had been different when he was alive. Matthias thought hard but only gave himself a headache, like every other time. He'd tried hundreds if not thousands of times to recall his past, but all attempts to remember it ended in failure. All the records of his reaping and death were missing too. Apparently he'd just appeared in a chair in the recruiting office one day.
He snapped out of his daydream when Alora appeared at his elbow with a huge bowl of ice-cream in all colors and flavors. Matthias was just about to take a bite of the delicious sampling Alora had brought him when an earsplitting shout came from the inside of the building. With a heavy sigh he put down the spoon and turned to face his fellow trainer. "Letty... Hi. Well you see it's really simple. We'd just gotten through self-healing and phasing practice, and I figured the recruits could use a little bite to eat." As usual he rambled to try and get out of trouble. "So I thought why not teach them a little recon as well, and let them explore the city a little bit? I made it a little exercise, and whichever recruit brought back the best ice cream would win. I think this is what they call tangential learning right?" Of course in reality he had just wanted to give everyone a break, himself included. Now he'd be reprimanded for wasting time.
