Here Be Dragons
Ryōka would've continued with his laughing fit had he not seen Mari separating herself from the group. Immediate concern washed over him as he felt compelled to follow her. Ryōka stepped out of the water without drying himself off, giving a quick smile to Yukino and the others before excusing himself. "Excuse me everyone, something has been brought to my attention. I will be returning shortly."
Ryoka did his best to keep up with Mari, she must've still been in shock from last night's happenings. And to think just a moment ago he had been laughing while she was in such pain. "Mari, wait!" He called, hoping she wasn't mad with him for being so happy in the presence of her despair. "Mari, I'd like to apologize if I've upset you. I shouldn't involve myself in such antics when you're clearly suffering." Ryoka went out to touch her shoulder without thinking, but he quickly withdrew it just as his fingers had brushed her. His stomach knotted in regret, how could he be foolish enough to make contact with her without her permission. "I'm sorry, someone like me has no right to touch someone as beautiful as you."
Stepping into the shadows casted by the trees, the girl didn't instantly stop as Ryoka called out to her. She fastened her paced, but soon came to a halt when Ryoka came dashing to her side, pausing for long before she finally turned to face Ryoka.
The girl's dark violet eyes stared right into Ryoka's, the air around them was still, unperturbed by even the slightest tinge of noise, that was, until a faint yet crystal clear voice reached your ears.
"Ryoka......"
"You are a good person, just like all of the students here..."
"You are the only one, that's willing to treat me this way."
"......"
"It's hard...it's hard for me to-"
"But I can't be a selfish coward forever..."
"I want to be brave...and....."
"I want you to be brave too."
"Indulged in those unrealistic dreams, blinded by my feelings...I know I'll have to snap out of it eventually."
"......."
Mari lowered her head amid the silence that ensued. Slowly, Mari rose her head up and took a slow and long blink before she turned away Ryoka, facing away from that boy as she stared into the blank space like a lifeless doll.
"Ryoka, You and Mari...they don't have much together, but Mari really do cherish everything she has with you."
"Mari really do."
"That's why, even at the end, she still couldn't say it, for she fears she would lose the one who she truly loves."
"Because she knows that she never deserves anything from you...so she desperately holds on to the false hope you gave her, even to be as foolish as to allow herself to be with you in the first place."
"She is just a worthless coward who begs for pity with tears for her entire life......"
"She is selfish and greedy, but......"
"I would like you to forgive her......"
"......"
"I would like you to remember her...the Mari you know, and truly cares about..."
"That's the only thing, Mari would ever want, so she decided to be selfish, for one last time."
"For once... she would like to be nothing but a girl, just a girl, a lovely... lovable girl."
"Promise me, you'll remember Mari as how she is, the Mari you know."
Mari turned around to face Ryoka once again midway through her sentence.
.
"You better remember her, do you hear me?"
The girl's pale lips soon curved into a smile, but that smile only masked the thoughts and unknown variables swirling in her mind.
Hiding behind that facade, Mari took a step away from Ryoka, before she turned around and walked away, disappearing into the darkness that extends from the heart of the forest.
