Imperial Crab Style


It is said that on the Blessed Isle, in little coves and bays that there are giant crabs that are found nowhere else within all of Creation. And perhaps nowhere else outside of Creation, save for those few that are brought to Yu-Shan as pets or to be kept for feasts by Sidereals who grew up in the Realm.


These crabs are large, and possessing a golden crimson hue to their spikey shells, thus earning them the moniker of Imperial Crabs. It is said that this style when it was presented to the Scarlet Empress during a martial arts tournament that she, herself, hosted brought an amused smile to her face. The user of the style, and later champanion of that tournament, was feted by the Empress to a feast themed after that expensive and rare crab.

The imperial crabs are reknown for more than their rarity. The crushing power of their claws once they get a hold of something is legendary, and they have been known to sheer off a toe or finger as well as crushing oysters and clams from pure pressure.


The martial artist mimics the imperial crab and whatever he grabs, he won't let go as he squeezes and keeps squeezing. The martial artist may use this charm in a clinch to supplement a crush action, doing lethal damage and ignoring hardness.


If the style is used in First Edition Exalted, the charm functions identically, depending if hardness is used or not. If hardness isn't used, remove that portion. Otherwise, the martial artist just does lethal damage in a hold, clinch or grapple.

Spending 2 motes, the martial artist strikes his opponent and his blow strikes deeper. The charm adds the tag "piercing" to a single attack. If the martial artist is already doing piercing damage, this charm has no effect and doesn't stack.

Until his next action or attack (typically 6 ticks later), the martial artist does 1L damage to anyone in a clinch with him per tick. This damage does stack on top of any damage derived from the martial artist's anima flux and may be soaked as normal.


If the style is used in First Edition Exalted, the martial artist does 1L damage for the next (essence) rounds to anyone in a clinch, hold or grapple with him.

Spending 1 mote per 1L/2B hardness, the martial artist's skin and armour shimmer with an almost golden pearlescent as the very essence of his body protects him with an additional bonus hardness against a single attack. This hardness stacks on top of any other sources of hardness the martial artist may have, such as from armour, spells and charms. The martial artist may not spend more motes than his essence.


If the style is used in First Edition Exalted and hardness isn't used, the martial artist buys soak at a cost of 1 mote per 1L/2B and may spend motes up to essence against an attack. Otherwise, the charm functions as noted above.

Coming into the fullness of the power of the imperial crab, requires that the martial artist perform a quick kata that brings to mind that of an imperial crab rising to the challenge, be it the surf on the shore or a deadly predator in the oceans.


Like the imperial crab, the martial artist may ignore any penalties from moving, fighting or acting in water. This does not mean that the martial artist is able to breath underwater without the use of other effects; such as the anima power of a water aspect. Nor does it grant the martial artist the ability to use ranged attacks underwater unless the storyteller determines it is possible. (see page 155 of 2nd edition core book - Water or Muck)


The martial artist also finds that he is capable of taking greater damage (able to soak lethal damage with his full stamina, any modifications and enhancements to the character's stamina helps with the soak).

Mimicing this effect, the martial artist causes his body and weapons to be momentarily be coated by a thin film of essence that glitters in the darkness, and those that he comes into contact with find that they suffer a -1 internal penalty for the rest of the scene, as their essence is contaminated.


This charm is considered a counter-attack and may not be used in response to a counter-attack. The effects of this charm is stackable and cummulative, but may not reduce a die pool below the target's essence trait.


If the style is used in First Edition Exalted, this charm causes the opponent to gain a 1 die penalty to his die pools for the rest of the scene after being successfully attacked or after successfully attacking the martial artist. This charm is considered a counter-attack and may not be used in response to a counter-attack.

Crouching low to the shore's sandy surface, the imperial crab appears to huddle before the onslaught of a seagull. Its shell has hardened over its life-time, and now is the test to prove how much it is worth.


Entering a low stance, the martial artist glows a brilliant crimson with mild traceries of gold as he spends his carefully hoarded essence. With a flare of crimson white essence, the essence expands outwards, giving the martial artist the semblence of being armoured.


For the rest of the scene, the martial artist adds essence to his stamina. The martial artist also gains the ability to parry lethal attacks without a stunt. If the form charm is active, the dragonblooded soaks lethal damage with his full enhanced stamina.


If the style is used in First Edition Exalted, the charm functions as noted above.

The larger pincer claw is the power behind the attacks essayed by the imperial crab against its prey and opponents. In the depths of the sea, the imperial crab sometimes find that those they would battle and fed on with stay away from their claws. This clearly would not do. Nature and innovation brought about a change, the imperial crabs snap their pincer claw so swiftly that the very water around it is compressed and ignited, before exploding outwards with a shockwave. This shockwave is harmless to it, but not so for the sea life near it as they are stunned and battered by the effects.


The martial artist claps his hands, weapons or even slams his feet on the ground, creating a shockwave centered around him. The shockwave has a radius equal to his essence, so the width of the shockwave is (essence x 2 with the DB in the center).


The attack roll is made with a normal Martial Arts attack roll, with an accuracy bonus equal to (dragonblooded's essence). Everyone within the radius of the shockwave compares their DV to the attack as normal. The damage is determined by how many motes are spend, as each mote spent allows the dragonblooded to do 2L or 3B damage. This damage is soaked normally, the dragonblooded may not spend more motes than their stamina (if charms are used to enhance their stamina, used the full enhanced stamina as the limit).


The attack also has an additional effect, any targets successfully hit by the attack have to make a reflexive (stamina + resistance) roll at a difficulty equal to the dragonblooded's strength to avoid being knocked down.


This charm may be enhanced with an elemental lense as an Elemental Bolt Attack is. Masters of this style have been known to activate this charm with a snap of their fingers.

If one were to peer on to the beach, they would see the shores covered with the imperial crabs. With claws held high and snapping, these crabs play a symphony as the moon dance overhead. A single crab's pincers are unremarkable, but a countless multitude? There is a power to be found in numbers.


The blows from the martial artist are weak when single, but this charm allows the martial artist to flurry without regard for the penalties of flurry; such as rate, multiple action die penalties and the DV penalty is only equal to the highest penalty for any one attack. Each attack costs 2 motes, and the exalt can buy up to (her essenc) attacks.


If the style is used in First Edition Exalted, the charm allows the martial artist to make up to (essence) attacks with no penalty at a cost of 2 motes per attack.

Observing the imperial crab striking its prey, one might suspect that the crab just might have cousins in the spider family. For its movements are swift, as it darts forward, pincers snapping away. So swift that the prey have no method of defending itself.


The martial artist takes this lesson to heart. Striking and moving swifter than the tides, his opponent find that she has no way of dodging or parrying his attack as he disappears from a distance to reappear before her.


Activating this charm. the martial artist may move up to (his full dash distance) as he makes an 'unstoppable' martial arts attack that is rolled as normal.


If the martial artist's attack is unopposed by a charm and does not gain enough successes on the attack roll to defeat the DV of the target, it will automatically get 1 success over the DV of the target. Damage is calculated as normal.


If resisted by a charm, the martial artist finds that his attack does not automatically succeed. However, the attack roll gains an additional 2 successes, which may still allow him to trimuph over the DV of his target. The successes provided by this charm can exced the normal die-adding limits of the martial artist.


If the style is used in First Edition Exalted, the charm allows for the attack to automatically have a minimum of 1 success over the difficulty and any defensive rolls, as long as it's not opposed by charms. In the event of charms opposing the attack roll, the attack gains an additional 2 success on top of its resulting roll.

I would suggest raising the cost. Existing charms which add the Piercing effect generally cost more than this. Likely it should be 3 or 4 motes...I'd suggest 3.

Interesting charm. Considering its lack of prerequisites, likely acceptable in effect...though I would suggest that it is Supplemental and not Simple. It might be better to have a slightly higher cost, again...but I'm uncertain. It's certainly a new effect.

Likely more useful against Trauma type effects than in combat, but may have some use. Most useful when usedin conjunction with heavy armor.

So, this can work on attacks and whenever attacked? How does this apply to attack that the user dodges? Must the attack strike to use this effect or what? This seems somewhat incomplete to me, and perhaps unbalancing.

Interesting effect. I might slightly lower the essence cost, perhaps to 4 or 5 instead of 6 motes. Certainly less effective overall than Jade Mountain Form, which include some similar effects.

Interesting. My only question is why the roll to avoid Knockdown is automatically Stamina+Resistance. Other Knockdown effects can be opposed by Dexterity or Athletics as well.

Rather nice. Inexpensive and effective. Probably acceptable cost considering the depth in the tree.

Considering the expensive cost and tree depth, this charm is next to useless. 6 motes and a willpower are to expensive for ensuring a hit against someone who isn't using any charms to defend. Might as well just use an excellency for less cost. You could likely keep similar cost and make it similar to the perfect attack in Falling Blossom Style, though more likely I would suggest altering the cost somewhat, possibly adding an additional cost outside of motes or willpower, such as a bashing health level if you make it a true perfect, and possibly dropping the mote cost to 4 or 5. As it is, the charm isn't really worth the expense.

Hmmm... fair enough, 3 motes, it is. And yeah, it can be potentially quite deadly against someone who uses armour. But against someone whose not using armour, and is depending on charms and spells for the soak, it's rather ineffective.

Interesting charm. Considering its lack of prerequisites, likely acceptable in effect...though I would suggest that it is Supplemental and not Simple. It might be better to have a slightly higher cost, again...but I'm uncertain. It's certainly a new effect.
Hmmm.... I would make it supplemental, but I can't quite see what action supplements. Which would make it either reflexive or simple, and reflexive could make it overpowered in the hands of a dragonblooded with free reflexives. ^_^ ;

Originally, I was going to make it scene long, to provide persistent hardness, but that was a tad over the board for a terresterial pre-form charm.

Thanks and yes, I would lower the cost to 4 motes, do you think the willpower cost is fair? Given that the user here doesn't eat any dexterity penalties, or need to touch the ground.

Hmmm... good point. With regards the stamina + resistence, I saw the knock down as a shockwave, which also affects the inner ear, and thus the body. Dexterity or athletics would also make sense.

Well... it's inexpensive to a celestial exalt, but to a Dragonblooded? It's hardly inexpensive, when you consider the extra action charms for archery, which is 1 mote per action, allows up to essence in actions and is VERY low tier in its tree.

A fair enough note. I did want it a perfect effect, and did base it somewhat on certain fey charms. But... a perfect attack in the hands of a dragonblooded... that oddly worries me. On the other hand, as it is, it isn't worth the expense. mmm....

I think the Willpower cost is sensible for Imperial Armoured Stance, it was only the Essence cost that concerned me.


On the commentary about Moonlight Sonada, Terrestrial Martial Arts are not just Dragonblooded charms. Remember that mortals, lower essence gods, and sometimes Celestial Exalts use them too. Additionally, the only Terrestrial Extra action charm that costs less in motes than this also is the pinnacle of its tree and costs a health level. Still, as I said, likely fine as is.


As for Dragonblooded gaining a perfect attack they already can do so with another Terrestrial Style, without mastering the tree, through taking Falling Blossom Style, specifically the charm Purity of Purpose Attack. That charm costs 3mote, 1 Willpower and 1xp. Considering that this charm is instead the pinnacle of its tree, if you want to avoid a similar xp cost, I would suggest having a 4 or 5 mote cost, and possibly bashing health level. The 6 motes and a willpower might serve as well, however such is likely going to be very draining very quickly. Of course, any perfect attack must be used carefully when a foe might have a perfect defense.

That's true, non-dragonblooded do occassionally use terresterial styles.

*nods* yeah... it has to be kind of pricy if it is to be a true perfect attack. And I'll avoid the whole xp cost of purity of purpose. A level of unsoakable bashing damage is more than acceptable to me for a perfect attack that requires a roll of 1 suxx to hit.

Medicine? Interesting choice. They already have a quite solid Medicine tree as is...though admittedly it can't heal bashing damage.
 
I'd have to say both the lore and awareness charms are a bit lacking for Dragon Blooded.  


And the scroll of the monk suggests that all exalted types have an essence awakening charm, but the Dragon blooded are lacking one.... Thinking of their traditional role as the leaders of squads of mortals do you think this is an over cite or on purpose (sure the Realm wouldn't use it since the Immaculate philosophy and all, but what about Lookshy or outcastes)
 
Yeah, martial artists can awaken their own Essence using Geomancy, but DBs can't at current. They can serve as a focus for a particularly impatient one though...
 
They can also use the ritual Essential River Channeling on mortals themself.


That ritual can target others than the user. For a DB with a little Occult it's pretty easy to use, especially since nothing prevent the use of say the 2nd Excellency on Thaumaturgy. That ritual also doesn't drop the target's Willpower when it is used...though it does lack the advantage of raising the Essence of the target to 2, like the Solar charm. Of course any mortal could learn the same ritual, but they lack Excellencies, which makes it a bit more risky for them...

(Element) Dragon Talon Style

Focussing the essence within his body, the dragonblooded are capable of mighty feats. Not the least of which is calling upon the elements for offensive and defensive effects. In this case, the dragonblooded summons the elements to provide him claws and talons in homage of the Elemental Dragons.


The dragonblooded gains the added bonus to their unarmed attacks (Speed +0, Accuracy +2, Damage +2L, Defense +1, Rate +0) on top of their natural attack stats for punches and kicks. If done with a stunt, the bonus from this charm may be applied to clinches and holds.


Due to the amount of elemental energies around their fists or feet, the attacks also gain the following elemental effects. If this charm is mastered by non-dragonblooded, they only gain the version they were taught. Dragonblooded learn the version that corresponds to their element first, before they can attempt to learn the other element variants. This charm is always considered water aspect for purposes of out of aspect surcharges, no matter which version is used.


Air buffets the target, staggering them, and reducing two die from their next action.


Earth causes a tremor on the ground beneath the target, forcing them to roll (Dexterity + Athletics) at difficulty 4 to avoid falling down.


Fire sets the target ablaze, providing a +4L bonus to the attack's damage bonus.


Water fills the target's lungs with water, forcing them to cough it out. The target's next action is slowed down by an additional 3 ticks.


Wood poisons the target, forcing them to reflexively roll (stamina + resistence) at (Dragonblooded's essence) difficulty to avoid being poisoned and suffering a -1 die internal penalty for the rest of the scene to all actions.


This charm can be enhanced by an elemental lense. Only one version of the charm can be active for any dragonblooded at any time.
 
Claws of the Inner Dragon

Type : Simple


Duration : One Scene

When a dragonblooded possesses a weapon, he can become possessive of it and not wish to have to put it aside to use Refining the Inner Blade.


This charm blesses the dragonblooded's weapon with the elemental effects of Dragon Graced Weapon for the scene. It also makes it holy, doing aggravated damage against Creatures of Darkness.


In addition, the weapon gains the following bonuses depending on its make.


Should the weapon be a non-jade weapon, it gains the magical material bonus for jade, in addition to the above effects. And is treated as a (rating 1) artifact for purposes of charms used on or against it, if it's not an artifact. This effect can over-ride the magical material bonuses from an artifact made of Anathema-metal.


If the weapon is a jade artifact, it gains the following bonuses; Accuracy +2, Damage + 2, Damage +0, Rate +0.
