Fantasy Cursed Island

"As you wish," Joanne shook her head and continued with the movement of the logs, eventually the three getting the tree inside so they could close the door.

"I'm gonna need nails and pitch," Adran explained now that the wood was inside and work could be done.

"Check me scrap!", Thoradin called, somehow managing to have heard that from here.

"Thank you!"

Once the moving work was done, Shuffle took a moment to stretch before noticing Raine’s training. Curious, she went over to watch.

Jerry gestured for Shuffle to sit down. "We're trying to teach Raine how to use a sword," she explained.

Shuffle walked over and sat down. She watched for a bit before glancing back at her maker’s daggers, sheathed on her belt behind her back.

Shuffle looked at Jerry and nodded. “Yeah.”

Emil stepped back about that time. “You’re doing good. Need a break?”

Raine was panting a little bit as she nodded. “Yeah...”

"Alright," Jerry nodded, she glanced around, "Over there where Adran's got the wood, go bring back four sticks, about as long as your daggers." Stick probably would have been good for Raine's training, but they hadn't had sticks at the time.

Once Shuffle returned with the sticks, Jerry took two, "We don't want to cut each other up," she explained. "Now, the most important thing when fighting with knives is speed. It doesn't matter how skilled your opponent is if you can stab him faster than he can stab you. The second most important thing is your ability to block, third is precision."

Shuffle looked over before running of to fetch the sticks. She could return faster by running on all fours, so of course she brought the sticks in her mouth. Keeping two of them, she stood upright and held them in her hands. She already had them in reverse grip. Her only experience with daggers was with the ones she carried, which were clearly meant to be held that way, based on how their sheathes were placed.

"Reverse is good," Jerry nodded, "Really the best grip depends on the kind of knife and how you fight, but we'll get to switching grips on the fly once you can do something with the knife first." She took a stance and instructed Shuffle to try and land a hit with her "knives."

Shuffle looked at her hands for a moment before just doing what felt normal with such a grip: slashing from the side.

"Good," Jerry blocked the strike with her s.tic "In a reverse grip, blocking depends on grip strength." She spun the other stick around in her free hand and jabbed Shuffle in the chest with it. "Dead." She took a step back, "Try again."

Shuffle considered her strategy before trying again, starting with the same swing but following up right away with her other hand.

Good, she figured that out quick. Shuffle was still blocked, but Jerry nodded. "Good. Keep going."

Shuffle nodded and kept trying. At least with the daggers, there wasn’t much form required for the swing. It was mostly what you did before and after. She did struggle for trying to get more than three attacks in a row. Since she didn’t know how to switch grips, the only thing she could think to do after the second slash was a stab.

Shuffle was learning, that was sure. Jerry kept blocking and deflecting, Shuffle kept coming off-balance as she went around for the third strike, so that was something to work on. Only so much progress could be made at once, though. "Let's take a break," Jerry said after a while.

Shuffle gave a nod and sat down. She was panting again after moving so much so soon after she’d finished moving wood.

Emil and Raine has resumed their training. Raine was starting to get more confident with her swings.

"So, Shuffle, what have you learned," Jerry asked tossing a goodberry into the air and swallowing it.

“Um....” Shuffle thought about for a few moments. “Don’t stab. It just throws me off.”

Jerry shook her head, "You need balance, we'll work on that next." She passed Shuffle the water flask, "I've got something I need your help with once you catch your breath."

Shuffle nodded and took a long drink from the flask. She handed it back once she was done and got back to her feet.

Jerry set the flask on the table and walked with Shuffle to a space away from where Emil and Raine were sparring. "I don't know how to use this at all," Jerry explained, gesturing to her tail. Almost two weeks the thing had grown off of her spine and she hadn't figured out how it worked. "Or these," she gestured to the wings. Those were more a yesterday development, though. "They don't move like the wings I had as a fairy," she explained.

Shuffle blinked as she looked at Jerry before glancing back at her own wings. “Mmm... It seems normal to me. I don’t think I can explain it, but I can show you.”

Shuffle nodded as she looked at Jerry again. “Uhh, we should start with the tail. It helps with balance.” She held her arms out as she stood on one foot, her tail moving to compensate and keep her balance centered.

Balance was definitely something Jerry was familiar with. Standing on one leg was easy up until she tried to use the tail to that end, and just fell over. "Dammit." Again, she lasted a bit longer before falling backwards that time.
