As the middle child and only daughter, Lillian often felt like an afterthought between her elder and younger brothers, both groomed to carry on the family’s legacy.

  
  Her mother emphasized the importance of grace, beauty, and charm. Lillian was expected to excel in the social arts—playing piano, attending debutante balls, and mastering the art of conversation. Meanwhile, her father, a powerful yet emotionally distant man, made it clear that one of her brothers were the true heirs to the family’s influence, leaving Lillian feeling invisible. Even as a young girl, she began to chafe against the idea that her worth was tied only to her appearance and marital prospects.

  In 1917, Nathan was the first born of the Sterling family children. He was always a happy and sensible child who found it easy to make new friends. This continued into his teens, where he was popular and excelled in his studies. Despite his intelligence and ability to think for himself, he was never certain what he wanted to do with his life. On account of his family's business, it simply felt natural to continue his father's legacy. As a result, he naturally imagined a future where he remained working within the family business.
  
  To strengthen his capability to support his father, Nathan chose to study business and finance at University. Despite taking full advantage of the parties, friendships, and bedding attractive women, he finished university with the highest level degree. As for most of his life to that point, he felt like his life ticked every box and he had the best future ahead of him. For the first few years that was the case as he got stuck into working for his father and learning the ropes in both legal and illegal business ventures.
  
  Then, the US joined the Second World War and he was drafted early 1942, where he spent the next three years fighting for his country. As motivated as he was to serve his country, he found the training and fighting extremely difficult. However, he made close friends within his unit and the men all helped each other to keep their sprits high. It was during the war that he first turned to substance abuse and casual gambling, be it to help numb the emotions with the former or just for a bit of entertainment. The ventures proved to be a suitable escape.
  
  As well as the mental exhaustion of the battlefield and the emotional affects killing other men had, Nathan experienced great loss over those three years as he lost comrades during the fight. The worst was in 1944, when his closest friend, Sean, was fatally injured after a bomb exploded close by. Nathan couldn't save Sean and instead had to stay with the young man as he bled out from his severe wounds. Those memories were ones he would carry with him for years after the war.
  
  In 1945, Nathan returned home and picked up his duties within the family business. He was wiser and stronger, but the experience in the war left him more dependent on alcohol and risk-taking. It became more than a way to relax as it had been in the war, and more of an addiction - a need. It became a way to escape what may now be considered minor stresses compared to the war, but affect him nonetheless.
  
  Whilst Nathan is loyal and competent in his work, his gambling and substance abuse have compromised his success. He fears his family will learn the truth and his place in the business will be jeopardised.

  History:
  Julius Carlisle was quote unquote, "The Failure" of the family. Having suddenly left the mansion years ago for undisclosed reasons still debated among the staff and certain families members. He actually used to be quite invested in the twisted game his father created, sometimes even being more successful in his schemes than the rest of his siblings giving them very serious competition So it was quite a shock when he just stood up from the dinner table one day and announced his intention of leaving his family, his fortunes, and even his inheritance to go off into the streets and pursue whatever fate awaited him there. Perhaps it was the pressure that got to him. Perhaps he just got tired. Or maybe, quite possibly. He witnessed something that changed the entire core of his being. His motivations for leaving is still relatively a mystery. Apart from some good guesses of course.
  
  But now. He's back. Having spent a few years on the streets playing the violin and even more years on the stages of Broadway. He has made quite a name for himself and even some money. However news of his declining father's health has for some reason prompted him to return and finally tie up all the loose ends he had left in that mansion.
  And maybe, just maybe, he'll play the game one last time. So that the rest of his family could finally be free of the cage they had created. That way, they will never have to do what he did all those years before.
