So I am in the process of making a wood DB that is a accomplished wine maker, holding some of the oldest vineyards in all of the blessed isle. I will post his story/background later but I have a question.


I know quite a bit about wine in our real world, however, in Exalted's creation would wine have the same names? Would varieties of the grapes be named the same. Maybe I am being too inquisitive of something that should just be left the same?


Is this like asking why every almost every alien species on star trek speaks english?


Also any ideas you have for charms or artifacts for a wine maker are welcome.

i must think the names of grapes would be the ssame like for ex the flying guiletine(which was named after the inventer a few centuries ago) spell pulls its name from modern inclenations as well as with much of the fluff uses modern and earthly names like pin and oak trees and horses..... also i belive wine making would just be a hobbie DB are noblemen by default so it wouldnt be a source of income and i dont think jade would be wasted on wine making and any artifacts made in the 1st agfe would be slim that it exists but... i supose a barrel that made wint it weeks insted of months would be neat.. as far as charms id sume to use craft charms
 
I, for one, do not know enough about wines and winemaking techniques, so I find it difficult to comment there.  What I will say however is to try to avoid to many real world names, simply so to keep the game within the setting.

I do see wine making as a valuable trade to a dynast that could easily make a lot of money doing. Every dynast and even the so called "middle class" as well as religious cermonies involve wine in creation. Therefore someone that had a lot of vineyards and wine making operations would have quite a bit of political power. Wine being a very social thing, you would think that you could learn a lot about what was going on in the world after offering quite a few free samples.


I agree that perhaps taking the naming rules of real world wine and applying them to the regions in game would make more sense then using pinot noir.


I think I will have to work on this.
 
Depends on what you call wine.


You can go the Cinese wine route.  


The Korean route


The Japanese route for sake with ume or even shochu.


Or even the Vietnamese route.


In my games, there are a lot of varieties of alcoholic beverages, spanning a lot of styles and ground, depending on the area.  I tend to roll with rice wines and fruit based brandy styles on the Blessed Isle, with grapes and other forms of fermented products where fruits are common as well--imported and experimented with on the Blessed Isle, often under House brands casked for their own use, as well as for trade to the Threshold.


Varieties of Apple Jack are more towards the East, as well as the more traditional Western grape based wines there as well.  


The West tends to run with sweet potato/Taro based sorts of spirits, more along the lines of vodkas.  Powerful spirits that they can raise easily.


The South runs with grain based and fruit spirits, as well as sugar based spirits that can survive long importation and long storage.
 
I am looking at the more western type of wine. I like the way you seperated the different types into different areas. Perhaps this DB not only does western type wines but alcohal in general.


Something to think about...however because I do what I know I think I will stick to sake and the grape varieties.


In the wood caste book it talks about these two flutes (glasses) that with a dedicated mote prevent any poison (including the alchy) from getting to you. I figured my DB would have a whole set of these...


perhaps he brews poison on the side?  :twisted:


Jakk, in your opinion, would this be considered a craft or medicine (the wine not the poison)


I think the next step is taking the Eastern regions and deciding where grapes would grow best. Then perhaps creating some ava's with specific types of grapes on them.


A way to have fun and add to my wine knowledge!
 
I'd say Craft.


In 2E it should fall under Craft: Water.  Medicine is for healing, and while you can certainly use wine and other distilled liquors in Medicine, the actual production I would definitely think of as a Craft.


And if I were you, I'd take a stronger look at some of the Eastern "wine" making methods as well--maybe as the 'common' folks' methods, but rice and other grains make for strong spirits, and ignoring them seems like a shame, especially for a game with such an Eastern flavor.
 
You have a good point, Perhaps I should spend some time stuying those methods and creating a map/guide to the different drinks/spirits/wines of creation. That would be pretty neat.
 
I think in Creation, base wines (and beers, and spirits) would be consumed by the common folk only. I'd imagine that the DBs, and other various powers that be have some pretty crazy magically concocted stuff that gives a better flavor, more pleasant sense of euphoria, and no hangover. After all, if WE had the power to make such beverages, I guarantee you nobody would bother with the regular stuff.
 
Which begs the question of what were the Solars brewing and distilling back in the day?


That might be a great hook right there.


A First Age cache has been discovered, and the Realm is beating the bushes to find it, with several factions trying to get to it before the Guild, the Lintha, and others, and it turns out to be a First Age wine cellar...

So some wine/brew making charms would be pretty interesting...they would of course go under craft I assume


Think about fermenting one of those peaches from the heavens..

I'm not sure about fermenting the Peaches of Immortality. You might just end up with regular fruit wine and some REALLY, REALLY long-lived yeast.


Considering Celestial Wine is not made from the Peaches, and it's pretty much the best thing you could ever possibly drink, I'd have to assume that Peach wine is either substandard, or impossible.
 
Yeah, I'm gonna need about a bushel of them Peaches of Immortality, some Celestial Sugar, a couple of them Yeast Gods, a cask made of the Gods of Oak's nail clippings, and a couple of Celestial Lions to give me a hand with the...

It sounds as if someone needs to reacquaint Yu-Shan with some Solar Bureaucracy Charms...
 
Wine-making occult?  Nah.  I agree that it's Craft: Medicine.


In 2E it states that the Blessed Isle never really focused on wine-making and were more than happy to import higher class wines from the Threshold.  V'neef's vineyards changed all that and the House's wine industry fills its coffers quite well.  Considering this, you might want to have your character be from house V'neef.
 
Something to bear in mind is that in Exalted there is no science. No physics, no chemistry and no biology in the way that we on this earth understand them.


In light of this, winemaking could be seen as either a ritual prayer to a wine god, or a minor thaumatugical ritual.


I always thought that the difference between a well executed mechanical task, a prayer to a littlest god and a minor thaumatugical ritual is one purely of point of view: 3 different winemakers might make wine exactly the same way, yet see the tasks they are preforming as 3 different things.

Blah.  I meant Craft (Water).  I don't think you would require a specialty in wine-making, though.  The different Crafts are pretty open-ended as to what they're capable of.
 
In my house rules, it would simply be a concentration in "Wine making", or "Vintner", or somesuch. None of this Craft (Element) shit.

and for that we need to go out to the wyld and use wyld shaping technique to get the impossible ingredients to make the impossible artifact and have it make us the impossible wine
 
My house rules, as it were, would be Craft (Alcohol) with a specialty in wine, beer, or any other specific type you want to make, otherwise it's a mediocre product.
