  yu-yan has always been pleasant to work with, albeit a little on the shyer side. not in the sense that she has trouble talking to anyone, but beyond small-talk about the weather and future career prospects, she supposes she's always been more reserved when it comes to meeting strangers. yu-yan's known to be courteous and polite with everyone she meets, and often goes an extra mile when it comes to showing care for staff and co-stars alike. she's thoughtful, and combined with her sweet nature, makes for a very caring individual. the sentimental type, expect her to be keeping old stuffed toys and attaching any sort of symbolic meaning she can think of with her gifts, if only because she wants you to know she put a lot of love into it. it's a little idealistic, but it's cute.
  
  as soon as she's comfortable, however, expect an endearingly bubbly girl who seems to have something new to invite you to do. she's passionate about a lot of things, relationships included, and she's always been the type to give her all in everything she does. yu-yan's far from perfectionistic, but her quality of work comes from a love of what she does. when she's enjoying it, yu-yan's able to drop anywhere between 24 hours to a whole week making sure she gets it amazing. while she's always tried to be nice, the reality is that she's often a little overbearing in her relationships. she puts a lot of effort into it and usually expects the same return, occasionally sidelining the fact that her partners and companions may not wholeheartedly agree with some of her actions. combine her drivenness with her stubbornness, and you get a not so great product of obliviousness to the worst consequences of her one-track mind.

  it's a few weeks after she first agrees to star in the drama that zi xuan proposes they break up. he says that he feels like it would be both of their good if they were to "take a break". to yu-yan the action comes out of nowhere despite the signs she'd hoped to ignore, and she wonders where exactly she'd gone wrong. she'd thought everything was fine. her grief manifests in a quiet rage, both at him and herself, and she leaves their shared apartment that very night with all of her belongings, taking artemis with her. zi xuan doesn't stop her. yu-yan cries until she's all dried up that night, and then cries a little more.

  she hasn't spoken to zi xuan in two weeks since their break-up, and it seems the start of the drama shooting has crept up on her. yu-yan's determined to give it her all, even if she constantly feels slighted by how okay he seems about everything. nevermind that he seems to be getting close to her make-up artist. he moved on quickly. but yu-yan isn't gonna let that bother her.

  they say that a man is a result of his circumstances — and there haven't been many circumstances throughout june's life to turn him into a warm, genuine person. like water taking on the shape of its container, june was faced with a cold & materialistic version of society from the get-go and that is, unfortunately, the mold that he was frozen in. if his view on life had to be described in one word, it might just be cynical, with how little faith he has in things like affection, trust or just emotions as a whole. to say that he's heartless would be going a step too far, but he is definitely not someone you'd see giving it all up for love or anything even half as idealistic, being of the view that such things are illogical and temporary.
  
  of course, that's not to say that june operates purely off rationality: he does let himself feel and occasionally even makes decisions off those feelings (see: song hana), but he also always keeps logic in the back of his mind, ready to jump out and catch himself whenever he feels like he's losing control — and it is this odd quirk amidst his personality that makes june difficult to truly understand. armed with an impressive level of emotional intelligence, he is, perhaps surprisingly, known for being chill and easy to get along with even among the many likable personalities of the entertainment world. with spontaneous tendencies and an outgoing, outspoken attitude, it's not a stretch to say that much of june's charisma comes from his personability.

  — bad fate​

  zhang kai min runs away from his family's nagging for him to start going to college again — they were more than rich enough to let him live luxuriously for the rest of his life, sure, but they thought he could at least pretend to be productive. he decides to fly off overseas for a while. this was, perhaps shockingly, nothing unsual on his part. on the flight, he meets this beautiful, young stewardess. she's new to the job and spills a drink on him. rather than get annoyed, he asks for her name, then her age, then her hotel room. again, nothing too out of the ordinary.
  
  he gets all the answers he wants and the duo spend the next few days of so-called vacation together, before they cleanly part ways and he returns back to his daily life of wasting his family's money. as always. but then the extraordinary thing happens. the girl, huang xueqi, comes back to find him. she's pregnant, she cries, now he has to take responsibility. though not a single member of kai min's family, including the man himself, was happy about this development, xueqi is adamant and good with her threats. the two get married and soon their first son, zhang jun hao, is born.

  — separation ​

  nearly 6 years after the zhang couple's abrupt marriage, they finally have a second child, jun wei. with their past few years as a family passing far from happily, it seemed like his arrival was the signal of them making peace at last. how laughable. not even one whole year passes after their younger son's birth when the two decide to live separately. obviously, as a baby, jun wei is taken by his mother while his brother remained with the paternal side of their family. the woman starts working again, leaving the boy to be raised by a nanny most of the time.
  
  

  2000s, Beijing, China

  — being seen ​

  jun wei grew up with toys and television for companions. concern & affection, in the face of a woman like his mother, became a scarce resource he had to work hard to earn. so when school starts and he's suddenly met with plenty of people who would load him with attention for doing nothing much at all, he inevitably began to thrive on the satisfying, ego-boosting feeling of being noticed.
  
  in 2005, after nearly a decade of being held back by societal pressure and a multitude of other issues, his father eventually said fuck it and decides to let xueqi have as much money as she wants in exchange for a divorce and the right to raise both sons together. jun wei returned to living with the paternal side of his family, where he's given significantly more love & care on a daily basis, but it doesn't erase the tendencies his empty childhood put in him.
  
  he started to get into performing. singing for school events, involving himself in street dance circles, jun wei did it all. though he began with childish ulterior motives, the boy grew to love what he did. so when news came that a foreign entertainment company was holding auditions in the city, jun wei readily agreed to join his friend in giving it a try.

  — debut ​

  jun wei moved to south korea after passing that audition, despite objections from quite a few members of his family, thanks to his father's support. he trained for around two years before he was put into a group to prepare for a debut, a comparatively short period compared to the rest of the trainees. it was hard on him, trying to catch up in terms of language, vocal training and so on, but he pushes through. he debuts as june, the youngest member of Orion, a 5-member group.
  
  it took a while, but by their second single, Orion was shooting up the popularity charts. they began to break records and gain fans by the hundreds of thousands in what felt like a flash. the public loved the group as a whole, with entertainers praising them to high heavens, brand after brand sponsoring them and, of course, teenage girls crying their hearts out at the very sight of them at concerts and events. the feedback toward individual members, on the other hand...

  — scandals, pt. 1 ​

  the first one was about his family. specifically, his father's side and how much money they had. all it took was one anonymous user accusing him of buying his way into Orion and suddenly people were acting like it was a fact. comments on videos and articles related to him were full of netizens telling him to get out if he had any conscience. there were even fans who refused his signature at fansign events for a period of time because of the rumors.
  
  maybe it was because someone who already had one stain on his record was just easier to keep hating on. but from that scandal onward, june felt like he had a target painted on his back. they were almost all about ridiculous things, too. people called him narcissistic over him admitted that he did find himself handsome, despite clearly having been cornered into saying that by the hosts of the show. when they won an award and all the members cried except for him, people made him out to be some sort of heartless dick who had no loyalty to the group.
  
  as years passed, june's reaction toward his scandals slowly went from hurt to angry to incredulous to unconcerned. by the time he reached the last stage, Orion had also matured enough as artists to not be so affected by public opinion. june stopped giving a damn. and, like bullies who failed to get a reaction out of their victim, the scandals also calmed down on their own.

  — solo success​

  after over 7 years in the industry, Orion's activities inevitably began to slow down. even if the obvious increase in gap between each comeback wasn't a clear signal, the start of every member's solo activity was. the group was coming to an end and it was up to each member, now, what they were going to do in the future.
  
  for june, there was an obvious answer to that question. his individual popularity in china had already been leaps and bounds ahead of that in korea. there, he was already a name often stated by trainees as one of the heights they hope to achieve; an idol to its truest meaning. it wouldn't take much for him to build up a stable career back in his home country, he thought, and his management agreed.
  
  they were right. he started off with acting in a movie, taking on a purposely dark role — it was much easier to convince people he was a Serious Actor that way. a few cameos in variety shows to get people's attention on him. another acting role. a few viral behind-the-scenes videos. those were all that really took to get his previously stable fame to rise even higher, pushing him to the tops of '30 under 30' or 'most influential celebrity' lists and get brand deals rolling in.

  — song hana ​

  now that he was much more free to do as he wished, having gained more leverage within his agency and broken out of the idol cage, june stopped caring about what people thought of his private life. he began to date openly, sick of having to sneak around with his lovers like they were having an affair. the first girl he acted on this with had her popularity rise like a tide until they broke up. and it was right at that time that song hana showed up.
  
  june realized hana was probably bad news early on. he met her while working on a campaign for dior together but they hadn't kept in close contact until she suddenly asked to catch up over a meal. he met up with her a couple of times and then they began dating despite his reservations about her. whatever, he'd thought to himself back then. nevermind that her timing was a little too convenient or that she seemed to make every correct choice like he was an otome game route and she'd been through it before. it's just for fun, anyway.

  when he found out hana was cheating on him, or at least planning on doing that, june wasn't particularly surprised. a sad thing to say about someone he'd been together with for nearly a year? sure. but that was how it was. he tried to talk to her face to face about it. honestly, it wasn't as if he had no feelings for her, after all. but she just left the car like she was escaping and he gave up on that.

  it took less than a quarter of a day for the news to come out about him apparently dumping hana. she'd been live on her social media when his texts had been sent and just so happened to let everyone see exactly what he'd said. she'd even acted all hurt, just to rub salt in the wound. just like that, june got another black mark on his record. people started to dig up his past relationships along with this new information, labelling him a heartless playboy.
  
  if it was just that, it wouldn't have been too bad. but then his management sent her an official request to clear up the rumors... and that got leaked as well. there went any possibility of his reputation being cleared. he was now the guy that cruelly broke a girl's heart and then used his company to force her into covering for him. great.

  a notable author who has penned several fantasy novels under a pseudonym. he otherwise lives a very private life, receiving enough royalties to treat writing as a profitable hobby. jin-cheng and yuanzi met when jin-cheng was brought on to oversee the adaptation of his first successful novel where yuanzi's then-managee was to be featured in. the two hit it off immediately, and they dated for only 8 months before getting hitched. they wed and had yu-yan at a pretty young age, but at that point, their success was enough to ensure their daughter would be brought up comfortably. jin-cheng's career only grew after marriage, and he's now released a total of 8 novels, 3 of which were part of a trilogy that saw massive success, in part due to the adaptation into a drama.

  the youngest son of a wealthy family, kai min was quite the prodigal son in his youth but has settled down significantly over the decades and now works as the director of a famous art gallery. though he's not exactly the best human being, kai min tried his best to be a good father. as someone who hated being controlled himself, he took a very liberal stance on parenting and, thankfully, it's worked well. the man claimed that he will support his children, both emotionally and financially, regardless of what paths they choose in life and he's stayed true to this promise. whether it was june's choice of career or jun hao's decision to study overseas, the man was always on his children's side when others opposed and this was much appreciated. though his older son is definitely closer to him, kai min has a good relationship with both brothers.

  a successful software engineer who has just started up his own company, jun hao is an impressive man in his own right, despite how often he finds himself overshadowed by his younger brother's slightly more flamboyant achievements. him & june couldn't spend much time together as children thanks to the separation of their parents. by the time june went back to living under the same roof, jun hao was already 17 years old and too busy with studies & friends to pay much attention to the younger. then, just three years later, jun hao decided to fly overseas to study. when he finally came back, june had been accepted into his agency and was training in korea. basically, there was simply never a chance for them to grow closer.

  a white cat of unknown breed, artemis was found as a kitten abandoned on the street outside of their apartment building. yu-yan was immediately taken by her and took her in, especially won over by artemis' loud, affectionate ways. artemis is half-deaf, literally, and thus was super prone to loud yowls when they first adopted her. it's been upward 5 years since she's joined the family, however, and she's since learnt not to cry out in the dead of the night and wake up a dishevelled, annoyed yu-yan. most of the times, anyways.

  vinny is an actor who has slowly climbed up from a stunt double to his current fame as a staple in wuxia films, with flower banquet being his second consecutive time in the lead role of dramas in the genre. june first met vinny on the his first ever movie set, about two years or so back — also while playing the complicated villain to vinny's heroic protagonist — and have kept in contact since. despite the sheer number of times they have fought and are going to fight on set, the duo get along swimmingly.

  they met through yu-yan's mother, but the two were actually senior & junior in yu-yan's high school, where wenxin attended to study performing arts as well. she decided to go for a behind-the-scenes role, however, when she found herself fond of the executive aspect of creating performances, seeking out the company after she graduated. it's a chance connection, but something that ties them together nonetheless. their first meeting consisted largely of wenxin complaining to yu-yan about their shared teachers. she's very endearing, at least to yu-yan, able to switch from no-nonsense to the younger sister she never had in a matter of seconds. wenxin fights the fiercest when it comes to matters regarding her managee, and cares greatly for yu-yan's wellbeing. she's always been a little wary with strangers whom she worries might be taking advantage of yu-yan, but at the very least, she waits to pass her final judgement.

  chen ke'er, known to most of her friends as poppy, is an aspiring professional make-up artist who is currently working on the set of flower banquet. it's her biggest gig so far, and she's very thankful for the opportunity to be able to be the main make-up artist for the female lead. poppy's a kind and hard-working girl who's generally very sweet to everyone she meets, and her and yu-yan have become fast friends since meeting on set.

  a rising influencer with a list of scandals under her belt, it's almost impressive with how she's been able to emerge with her reputation relatively unscathed each time. clout-chaser and gold-digger are both appropriate titles to put on her, the former more accurate, but she's gotten this far on much more than just her pretty face. ruthless, unscrupulous but with an irresistable charisma, hana was definitely built for success, and she deems this the most efficient way to get there. the combination of narcissism and purposefulness is horrifying. she's almost too adept at self-victimising and spinning lies, and she's more than willing to step on others to get what she wants. rumour has it that she ruined a professor's career just to get a clean break from one of her loathesome boyfriends, but it's all just speculation. we wouldn't know. of course, there's a lot more to her than she lets on, largely in the fact that she's become an attention whore off of the fact that her parents never loved her, but hana would never tell you that. she's here for your fame and money, not for any sympathy.

  zi xuan is a scriptwriter currently involved in the flower banquet project. a calm, reserved character who enjoys the arts but hates being in the spotlight, he's someone whose job you wouldn't be surprised at all to find out. in terms of his career, zi xuan can be considered a success story and being the second-in-charge for such a large project's script at his age shows this off. his rise begun from getting a place in the team working on an adaptation of one of xia jin-cheng's novels a couple years back, an impressive feat for a rookie who'd just entered the scene. a feat that he is well aware he only achieved because his girlfriend was the author's daughter. he may be as warm and gentle as they get, but zi xuan is also someone with a lot of pride. he is talented and he wants to be recognized for that, not his connections. receiving yu-yan's help back then was a source of shame for him, though he hid it in order not to upset her.
  
  at first, he thought he could handle it. as yu-yan retreated from the entertainment industry, zi xuan's career moved forward and this let him regain confidence in himself. but when she told him that she was getting back into acting, all sorts of worries popped up for him. what if people found out about them? wouldn't that taint his reputation? wouldn't that make a joke out of all the effort he put in? he knew he shouldn't have let those thoughts mess with him but he found himself subconsciously putting a wall up against yu-yan.
  
  when he heard that she was joining flower banquet, which he was also working on, that was the breaking point for him. he was more scared about the possibility of their relationship getting out and affecting his work than he even expected from himself. and, so, he decided to break up with her, at least for the duration of the project. maybe it was a guilty conscience, but he also purposely began to show interest in another girl so others would never suspect his relationship with yu-yan, despite knowing there was no need for that.
