News Chat Offline

I remember when I first joined this forum. I believe it was not long after the merger with RPZone, when the Shoutbox was arguably in its prime. In the last few weeks the SB population has dwindled and chat activity has slowed to a trickle, so I cannot say this was unexpected.

Here's to a great age of enjoyment and excitement among my peers and companions! Now we can hope for something newer and greater in the near future. Just keep that flame lit Dwiz, and don't you let it fade on us. Thanks again for all the time and work you've put into this site over the years.

Well, I don't know if someone asked this already, but what about people that use mobile phones and tablets, will TS be available on these devices? El Psy Kongroo.

Yes, but depending on what OS you are using on those devices, TS may or may not be free/expensive.

@Ayl I am using an iPad, which means I am using iOS, I don't really care about the price, just as long as the app isn't too big. El Psy Kongroo.

Also, regarding the "Shoutbox dieded" situation:

Then go to your AppStore (or whatever it's called, I dunno, never used iOS) and search for TeamSpeak.

I'm honestly not sure if I am happy or sad to see it go. I mean, of course I liked it and all, but lately its only function seemed to make me only more irratated. I remember only chaos and confusion (of course) in the sb. I am not especially sad to see it go. Maybe I can finally get some rping done instead of being absorbed into whatever is happening there. Mostly means that I listen.

In any case, the sb will always be in my heart as I met some wonderful individuals there.

Well...

My status updates seem to have psychic powers, apparently. (> :D )

Au Revoir, shoutbox.

will be able to still chat or not? I'm a bit worried to hear this kind of news
There are still plenty of places to chat around the site, including but not limited to: PMs, OOC of roleplay threads, and the entire discussion forum of the site. We also have Teamspeak, which is a voice/text based chat program much like skype. You can read about it here. It's free for desktop (both mac and PC), but may have a small fee for mobile devices.

Shoutbox, you will be dearly missed by those who frequent you. I promise to spread throughout the site the hundreds of thousands of pounds of your ashes from the many times you have been set ablaze.

[QUOTE="The Dark Wizard]Hey All,
So this is an interesting and hard topic to discuss because everyone who has been around a decent amount of time has known how passionate I am about making this work. As most of you are aware, the chat or rather the shoutbox is an awkward part of the site that we've been trying to update and modernize to catch up with the rest of the site. However it is an older addon that is actually a shoutbox, a place to leave slower messages for others to see but instead we've fashioned it as a real time chat against the purpose of it's coding since it was really the only solution at the time for our forum software.

However through out the years this has been represented by slowing down any page it was on (thus removed and added to the forum index various times through out the site's history and then made optional to opt in) until it settled on being its on page at the top of the site. This was also represented by the fact that as the site continues to grow and be visited by thousands of users, the SB in its current state is used by less then 25 different people lately. But above all else, it's starting to show its age by the fact that it is eating messages and causing other internal problems.

However this time I don't have an awesome chatbar experiment or other solution to provide immediately. Instead in a few days to a few weeks, we will be launching a new Teamspeak experience and in the mean time we will continue to look for a proper real time chat solution for the site.

In the mean time, in the foreseeable future expect the following from TS:

  • Completely integrated with the RpNation account system, so teamspeak will be able to tell when you are a site member.
  • A better channel/room system/doing things for general hanging out with your friends and roleplaying.

But apart from that, thank you shoutbox for existing up till now. Thank you for all the friends you let me make :) !

Though it's sad to see the shoutbox go and we'll all miss our friends that we talked to but that's what messaging is for, right? We'll always have access to new friends. :3

Anyhow, do you have to download TeamSpeak? I've never really experimented with it or anything.

i got an idea. why not we create a rpnation chat-room on devianatart.
deviantArt has a lot of content on the website that wouldn't be age appropriate for a lot of young users and isn't consistent with the rules of our site for older users. While I'm aware that these things can be "hidden," there's no guarantee that we would be able to keep everyone from that content.

I like that outlook on things. :) Yes, TeamSpeak is a program that has to be downloaded. It's completely free for computers and is available as an app to download, but the app may cost money. You can read a little more about TeamSpeak here.

Of course :)

But alright, thank you very much, Pine. Your help is much appreciated. ^^

What about people on mobile? They can't use team speak without paying, and what about people who acsess from a school or library or any of the above and can't download things?

The app, as far as I can tell, isn't super expensive. Either way, you still have plenty of options to communicate with other members. We have PMs, OOC threads in roleplays and a whole discussion forum. My first year on RpN, all I did was talk to the people in my roleplays, maybe PM a couple of people, but it was still really fun and I've made a lot of long-lasting friends that way.

the team speak option's aren't working for me. when will the administrator allow me to chat with anybody. the forums are slow to reply to any discussion. I'm sorry but this isn't working for me.

I'll get on Teamspeak and apply your permissions now. It has to be done manually, and sometimes we aren't around or don't notice new people in the lobby right away. I'll get right on it!

Damn, now where will I pop my head in randomly and draw all the oldies back by my mere presence *flourish*

WHERE I SAY.

Sad to see it go, but not surprised- miss seeing all your lovely faces when I randomly pop out.
