Chapter 0.5- The Initiation Ceremony

Alicia Day
Rv7DYY4.png

The surrounding clearing and forest was beginning to become quite crowded. Students flooded out of the forest at every angle. Had there always been this many students for this particular experimental group? Alicia certainly hadn't met them all yet. Which was something the little blonde birbie wanted to rectify immediately! --Or at the most opportune moment, anyhow.-- Anyway, with all these students appearing, Alicia's mood began to lift. She realized 'the more the merrier' held a very strong meaning, which was always just a random non-idiom she had heard before. Alicia wasn't used to 'more', so she had never really understood it, but now with all these students around.. -it was like they were a true force! That was relieving.

Especially considering poor little birbie had no real clue how to provide anyone any aid. She had never imagined this test to be quite so difficult! Staring up at the sky, the two large Nevermores circled ominously like black shadows overhead. Alicia had no ranged capabilities, no way of providing help, no way of attacking the Grimm that was the most immediate threat, no way of even ascending the tower to help rescue the Princess. Yes, the irony was lost on her that the one person who seemed totally useless, was the one person with wings of all things. Okay, yep, observing the situation, Alicia began to remember why she was feeling so hopeless and downtrodden. -She couldn't do anything! She was utterly and completely useless! Noble Phantasm -held in her hand- was utterly pointless. Her hand squeezed down on the grip in mild anger, but more frustration, when she realized this. Even if she could somehow manage to cut the Nevermore, it would probably feel like nothing more than a pinprick of irritation, or at the very worst, the smallest little sting -like a papercut! Even that was probably giving Alicia and her puny sword too much credit.

"YEE~CHEEEP!" Alicia chirped out in immediate shock, her voice squeaked in panic as the sharpened quills fired down at her. The blonde birbie darted around swiftly to avoid being completely skewered. The latest one she avoided was much to close for comfort, crashing down right beside her; enough to hit her with a wind that ruffled her feathers. She was fast, but she couldn't avoid shots forever! Alicia whipped out her mirror, holding it up. The glass gleamed under the sunlight, and her golden-orange Aura flashed over her. The feathers that were falling her way met with the force that was her Semblance. After the briefest of invisible friction, they curved and smashed into the ground to her sides, angled away from her. With this, she didn't have to spend energy dodging, so she sighed in relief. "Ah~ha... phewie..." She only had to spend energy maintaining her Semblance.

Leise swore she felt her heart jump out of her throat when a girl appeared before her from nowhere then fell down the ground. She skidded to a stop, eyes frantically searching the sky and for cover, hands raising a large, invisible shield. But no kind of sharp, feather projectile rained on her. So, dumbly, she lowered her raised hands directed to the sky and turned towards the girl––a clumsy ninja girl––then at the guy who was a monk as she tried to catch her breath.

Hands slightly shaking, she typed, “Bow and arrow, ranged. I’m better on hacking away at monsters, though. Semblance could be ranged, but drains easy.” She replied, scroll’s voice all monotone. “I’m also mute if none of you can tell.” Apparently, some people needed that to be said to their face bluntly if her interaction with the big-boobed purple girl––Lilly––said anything. Then another girl entered the area, holding a paintbrush that somehow created ice shards from dust. Leise decided to ignore that as well as the fog just to keep her sanity. Semblances are weird. “Let’s get a move on, kill the birds somehow, then regroup with the others.”

Watching silently as the girl with the paintbrush launched Dust at the nevermore, he started to wonder why everyone was here. Maybe it had something to do with the academy? His eyes caught a stray feather rocketing their way and, with a spin of Cloud-Maker, batted it aside. “I would prepare an arrow and get ready then. I’ll create some cover for us, and then we should move out of the way of the Raven. It’s not very wise to stay out in the open like this, we need to find cover. That tower towards the center seems like a good point to move to. Any other suggestions? One more thing, why are you all here?“ Hirrakirri asked, even as the turquoise mist began to seep from the head of his weapon.

Ally was quiet as she looked at the group that had gathered. One of the lessons her mother had tried to teach her recently was not to rush into a fight; to stop and study, to find everything she can use before acting. And that's what she was doing now, listening to everyone voice (type?) their opinions, examining their weapons and the environment, trying to see all the pieces to the puzzle and how they fit together. It was when the girl with the brush began launching frosty dust shards at the ravens that it all clicked in place. "Ice! That's it!"

She gave the monk a look, not realizing his situation. "Um, the initiation, duh." then she announced to the rest of the group. "Alrighty guys! I've got a plan!"

"Let's split into two groups. If you have ranged weapons stay back and provide covering fire. Stick to the trees but don't group up. If you have ice rounds, use them. Try to weigh the Nevermores down, 'cause the closer to the ground they are the less effective their feather attack will be. The rest of us will head to the tower using monk-boy's fog. We get in, grab the 'princess', and get out. If you get a chance to hit the birds, take it, but don't slow down. Once we have the target we fall back to the cliffs whether the big birds are down or not. As my mother would probably say, our job is to keep everyone alive, not to kill the enemy! So prioritize!"

She grinned at everyone, rather pleased with her idea. "So what do you all think?"

"Ooo that could be fun! The nevermore flies in all 'rawrrrr' and you just stand there like 'bring it! on punk!' then it comes crashing in like 'CRASH' and the cage breaks open and the princess fellow comes tumbling out and you swoop in to catch him and then walla freedom! That's the most awesomest plan ever for an escape!" A rather bubbly voice came out from nowhere directed towards Vatra. Lilly's head popped up from the other side of the cage as she climbed up with relative ease on the opposite of her on the cage. A warm carefree smile was resting on her lips as she looked towards the girl. She didn't in the least bit seem as if she was taking the test or the dangers it presented seriously.

Liela had slipped away from Leise not long after they encountered the nevermore and as others began to show up. Having no way of really fighting a flying grim, she figured the best option would be to work on freeing the princess, casually leaving Leise behind with the others nearby. It was far from likely the best option as far as keeping a partner safe, though Lilly wasn't exactly one to consider if something might go wrong. Despite how little she knew of Leise, she trusted her to be able to handle things herself just fine.

"I wish I was as smart and pretty as you to come up with such cool plans! My idea was so boring compared to it... I was just gunna use my semblance to cut through the cage with ease to free the princess. It's so boring compared to your fun plan! Ooo! We can just get on top of the cage and jump around and be like 'free food here nevermores! Come get us!' then they can come and we can get right to the rescuing!" She spoke quite excited, quite casually dropping the fact she wouldn't have a problem getting the man out through her excited rambling about a much more risky plan only because to her it sounded more 'exciting' to do.

As Livana continued to dance around the Nevermore feathers that continued to pepper the ground like some kind of storm she overheard the three students nearby begin to talk, trying to figure out the best course of action to take. At least she assumed they were students, she wasn't sure who else would be insane enough to wander into the Emerald Forest besides aspiring Huntsmen. The first voice she heard was strange to say the least. It didn't even sound human. When the voice mentioned they were a mute it made more sense, probably a text to voice app or something. She seemed keen on killing the Nevermores, as was she. The boys voice sounded much more normal, even strangely calm amidst the chaotic battle, though he didn't seem to what they were doing.

Huh, maybe some people did just wander into the forest?

It wasn't until the final voice spoke up that something resembling a plan was made. The ranged people were to stay back and provide covering fire. Which basically meant Livana had to stay back and provide covering fire. No pressure or anything. All's she had to do was cover everyone... Pssssshh, nothing a Puma can't handle!

"That sounds like a plan to me! Like, really the only plan anyone has suggested. So, let's just go with it ya know? You guys start running, and I'll keep flinging." As she finished speaking Livana dived backwards, barely hearing in time a feather that was heading right towards her, feeling the rush of air against her skin as it narrowly missed. Her cat and mouse game continued for some time, with Livana diving about the forest like a madwoman, flinging whatever ice shards she could. Having to move so much made it difficult to aim, but judging by the caws from the Nevermores and the increasing proximity of their flapping wings it seemed like the plan was working. For the most part.

Still Livana just flailing about trying to toss ice could only work for so long. She needed to hit them with something else if she wanted to really give those Nevermores a headache. She needed her semblance. But how in Remnant am I going to be able to stand still long enough to do that!? As she tried to figure out how to make her semblance work in such poor conditions, the ashen haired artist realized that there was another aura near her, like a golden halo. What really surprised her was that the girl didn't seem to be moving, but the feathers seemed to be deflected or moved somehow. A semblance perhaps? Whatever it is, it could be my best bet for cover.

Diving beneath a collapsing tree, Livana flung more ice dust from her brush, the shards managing to hit one of the Grimm's wings, causing it to sink ever further towards the earth. The girl slid to a halt when she was next to the golden aura'd individual, offering a bright smile in their direction, though it was somewhat off. "Hi there! Sorry for dropping in like this, but I needed some cover and whatever you're doing is providing just that. So thanks for that, and... Um. Well, I'm just gonna do my thing quickly so we don't die."

There wasn't a great deal of concern in Livana's voice as she said this, but rather a glint of excitement and fire could be seen in her eyes as she dipped her paintbrush into some more icy dust paint. "Time to make the world my canvas." Holding out her brush in front of her, Livana began making grandiose strokes through the air, which actually seemed to stick. It must have been a strange sight, some blind faunus girl painting the air like a lunatic. But there was a method to her madness, as there was with any great painter!

It took time, but soon her work had come to fruition. Two strange looking stuffed bunnies with shark like teeth hung in the air. For a moment it seemed like that was all that was going to happen, until the paintings quite suddenly sprung to life, chattering and bouncing about excitedly around their creator. They were fairly large, going up to Livana's midriff, with nasty claws to top them off. Not the most cuddly bunnies to ever have existed, sure, but Livana loved them all the same.

"D'awww, there's my precious babies! Did you miss mama, she missed you!" The puma cooed to her animated constructs, petting their heads, their skin wet and ice cold to the touch. "You guys wanna hurt some mean birds for me?" The bunnies shook their heads excitedly, as Livana dipped her paintbrush into a green dust paint.

"Alright then my lovelies.... FLY!" With the flick of her wrist, a strong gale of wind was thrust from her brush, picking up the bunnies. Both struck the lowest of the two Nevermore with surprising force, one smashing right into its face while the other was on its side. Neither wasted a second before they started to viciously claw at the Grimm, the top one tearing at the beasts eyes while the other tore at its wing and side. Each strike added more ice onto the beast as well, making it collapse further and further towards Remnant.

"Aren't they just the cutest, most vicious lil bunny warriors you've ever seen? Really, I'm asking. I've never actually seen them before."

Maintaining her Semblance was already taking its toll. She could feel the friction when the feathers collided with the strange mystical, shimmering that was above and around her. The refraction effect was pretty, and powerful, but it was still an extension of her. And Alicia was weak, she couldn't maintain her Semblance forever. It would require training, much much more training to be used for extended periods of time reliably. She hoped to high heaven that she could maintain it long enough for the Nevermores to be taken out... And it irked her, that she could only protect herself while hoping someone with better capabilities took out those Grimm for her.

Then, a voice! Glancing behind her, the girl spotted this other blue-eyed girl enter the 'bubble' of her Semblance. -Which meant she was standing very very close to Alicia. Causing the birbie to have to maneuver herself and her wings to not rudely bump into this other person. Despite everything, Alicia chirped happily, "Hello there! I am Alicia Day! It's nice to meet you!" She heard what the other girl said, then perked up, "Oh?! You need my Semblance to shield you?.." Alicia sounded a bit more concerned, glancing around. Students were still leaping around, doing their own thing. She observed as two -no- three feathers collided with her Semblance, 'sparking' against her looking glass, then refracting away, smashing into the ground at a distance that threatened neither girl. She decided she could do this, in spite of everything she was feeling internally. -This was how she helped! It was a relief to finally be of some use! "M-mkay, yes! I can protect us!! -I would very much not like to die today..!" Unable to refrain, Alicia's bubbliness showed by flapping her wings happily at this new plan; then she winced at her stupidity, when a pain shot through her sprained one. Oops.

Her wings settled down, as she was still grimacing from that sudden pain, when the girl behind her did her thing. Still maintaining her own Semblance, Alicia watched in wonder as this other girl apparently used hers. She was painting the sky -which in of itself, was quite the odd sight -someone reminding Alicia of her own odd Semblance that shimmered like warped mirrors. Then these paintings came to life! Odd bunny rabbits with some nasty teeth and scary dispositions. When the girl spoke up about hurting birds, Alicia recoiled some pulling her wings in, making herself smaller, frowning. Then she realized the girl meant the Nevermores! Ah! Yes, of course! That made way more sense. Alicia's outfit waved about frantically and her feathers blew ruffled in the sudden burst of wind behind her. With blue eyes wide with curiosity, she watched as the strange bunny things flew up and latched onto a Nevermore. They attacked it mercilessly; it was like aggressive animals fighting over territory. "Wowza..." Alicia breathed at the sight -at all of it-, her Semblance still up, totally perfectly fine. While watching this other girl, Alicia had forgotten the stress of maintaining her Semblance, which had only made it easier to keep it up. Good thing too, cuz the feather attacks were still dangerous, but the two girls had nothing to worry about.

Hirrakiri nodded and watched the fighting unfold around him. It was an odd sight to him, seeing so many people with their semblances in active use. He wondered if this was the initiation for the academy, if so at least he had arrived. With a small breath, the monk closed his eyes and sat down, his legs crossed beneath him. Around his body, hus aura began to glow its turquoise color as the mist began to pour heavily out of his staff and onto the ground around him

With the opening of his eyes, which were now glowing the same color as his Aura, the boy leapt to his feet. Body and weapon became one as his movements became as smooth as water, forming a sort of dance he learned at the monastery. Within moments, the mist had expanded and the area was covered in the thick fog. He could see all but none could see him. Using the wind dust in his staff, he moved the mists around his allies, clearing a path to the tower nearby.

Go now, to the tower for safety!“ He said loudly, his voice echoing through the fog.

Entropia ReynardAs they burst into the clearing the fox immediately saw the threats circling over head. Other than her missiles she wouldn't be much use against nevermores like that, and even then they were slow, too slow to catch a nevermore in flight.

“Hey Flappy I'm going after the princess, cover me why don't cha?”With that remark she was off like a bolt, maybe not as fast as the other initiates could manage, but still a lot faster than your average human. It was exhilarating to be in the thick of it like this, her heart was pounding in excitement as she closed nearer and nearer to the tower upon which the bird cage was perched, she could see the door in front of her as she got nearer and nearer, she smirked when she focused her semblance forward followed by a hasty offhand throw of one of her hammers which caused the door to absolutely crumble to dust. Throwing up a dust of stone and wood as she burst through it, grabbing her thrown hammer as she entered the tower. It was more animal instinct that caused her to push off of the ground and sail over the head of a very surprised beowolf. That grin found itself plastered to her face like a girl in stupid mushy love. Well at least she was in a kind of mush when she landed with a hammer crushing the skull like mask of one of the guard Grimm. Pulling back as it turned to smoke she just looked at the survivor who much like a dog, turned around and ran away sensing nothing but a sort of sadistic joy radiating off the the fox from the excitement of her entrance rather than the delicious taste of fear.

”Awwww no fun! I was looking forward to smashing your widdle face. Hmpf… It truly was disappointing having the little devil run off before giving her the satisfaction for combat. Though if she were being honest with herself she hadn't really had much of a rush from lighting beowolves in a long time. They were just too… squishy. It wasn't like they could actually take a hit from Strumrakete without being turned to paste anyways. She heard fighting outside and her heart panged. Oohhhh it’s not fair that they to get to have all the fuuun! And with that the fox continued her way up the tower.

Vatra shifted her weight to one side and rested her free hand on her hip, looking over the princess with amused eyes. He doesn't seem all too upset to be up here... At least he's accepting it! "Brava on the makeup, fella. Better than I could do." She straightened her posture for a moment and clapped, before grasping the bars out of fear of falling. "Is it illegal? Because if they have your consent, they can do just about anything they want." She took her somewhat-sassy posture again once she regained her balance, "Anywho, that's not really important..." She scanned the top of the tower on the other side of the cage, looking for abnormalities. It's possible that the tower had an interior... But breaking in from the top seemed like the easier solution, especially if she were on her own. There was no way one student could handle whatever was inside alone. It's probably dark, too. Scary.

Vatra jumped a little, her foot slipping and sending a few pebbles down the side of the tower, when a new chick popped in out of nowhere to comment on her idea. She was making a total joke of it, but whatever! At least she appreciated it.

A bashful smile rose on Vatra's face when the new girl called her smart and pretty; it almost flustered her to the point where she didn't hear the important bit. She forced the smile away and scooted around the edge of the cage, using the bars for support. She left her grapple where it was. "What did you just say?" She reached the other side of the cage, where the girl was, and grabbed her face with her open hand. She squeezed her cheeks together and gave her a good, hard look. "You aren't just stupid, right?" Vatra squinted her eyes like she was examining the foreign girl, tilting her head a bit. "Okay." She released the girl's face, stepping back a bit. "Say what you just said again, really, really slowly."

Joshua nodded at the girl's suggestion of having the ranged fighters hang back and fire upon the nevermores. "Agreed," Joshua spoke in a booming voice. "Although I do have a rifle I'm better suited to providing close range support and taking hits. I'll cover you as you make your way to the tower. At that point the monk cast his semblance, in this case an obscuring cloud, and used it to advance closer to the tower. As one of the nevermores closed in on the group, another two students, a Faunus and ~Was that Alicia?~ began to bring them down onto the ground. The two of them looked like they needed help so Joshua, eyes blazing crimson, ran in with a booming ~ARRGGHHH.~ It was a far cry away from the previous night if anyone saw him and began to hack away at the Nevermore yelling as he did so.

Lilly watched as Vatra approached her only partially noticing the tint in her cheeks not really thinking much about it. She watched her come close, holding onto the side where she was seeming quite comfortable where she was. Despite her appearance might seem to give off, she was a rather excelent climber and well adapt at getting up to places she really shouldn't be getting into. There had been more then one occasion she had found herself in a location he wasn't suppose to be an suspected of being a thief all for the sake of sating her own curiosity.

The girl blinked as her the girls hand was sudden placed grabbing her cheeks as she looked at her. "Wa... wah wa waaah?" She mumbled out in response to being examined looking rather lost as she was given a more careful examination by Vatra. "No... my name isn't Stupid, you can call me Lilly if you want! I guess I am just Lilly though if you want to keep that part" She spoke not at all seeming to realizing she was asking if she was stupid in Lilly's typical bubbly moments of excitement. To say she could be air headed at times was perhaps an understatement to some extent.

"Oh! Um... what was it I was saying? Oh, that's right. I was just saying your idea sounded a lot more fun then my idea. I was just going to use my semblance to break the princess out... like this!" She spoke quite happily seeming to realize she didn't know what her semblance was. She drew out her blade, twirling it about in her grasp. A vibrant light purple glow emulated from the blade as it was enveloped in plasma. She suddenly began to move the blade into the bars of the cage, the blade easily cutting through the bars with only a little bit of resistance due to the awkward way in which she had to use the blade. Her blade cut around creating a oval shape as each part sliced through fell forward leaving an opening in the cage, the edges still quite hot cooling off a bit as the plasma was pulled away from the blade and it was slipped back into the sheeth.

"I was just gunna do that to free her, like I said its not very fun. Ooo! Do you think they will come charging us if we both shout together at the same time and wave 'em over! We can see if it breaks the cage then to make our great princess escape!" She spoke seeming quite content at continueing out her plan despite the opening she just created in the cage to free the 'princess'.

Leise did prepare an arrow, acknowledging the monk guy’s words with a nod. She did find it strange that he asked why there were here at Beacon, and she took it as him cracking a joke. She’d have responded as well, but it was a bit difficult doing so when her hands were busy holding her weapon at the ready.

Leise listened intently to clumsy ninja girl’s plan—and wow, did she need to learn their names because that was just wordy—finding wisdom in it. She didn’t wait to voice out her affirmative, only giving a very obvious nod that, yes, she was going to follow that plan, before breaking away from the group, maintaining her cover using the forest.

Unfortunately, while the cover was good to protect her from the Nevermore’s sight, it also worked to the Nevermore’s favor. She had been prowling in search of that spot that would allow her space to shoot as well as book it when she’s spotted, but there had been no such luck. And she had limited dust arrows, too. She couldn’t afford to miss a shot.

Already, she could see one of the Nevermores start to be encased in ice, the faunus painter already dealing damage and enacting the plan. Seeing that, it irked Leise. She hated feeling useless. And really, if there was one thing that she learned, people were prone to misunderstanding her actions. What if those three thought that she ran away from her responsibility in regards to the plan?

Leise clicked her tongue, looking towards the unfairly clear and empty sky (minus the Nevermores), wondering how she could let loose arrows and impact those flying monster birds without missing a single shot, when the most absolute idiotic idea came to her. What if she could come to them? But Leise, she thought to herself, you’re going to fucking die if you attempt to create those platforms.

At least, you’ll be dying with style, she reasoned to her actually reasonable side.

She didn’t even realize that she was already taken to the idea, sprinting out from the cover of the trees and jumping off the cliff, laughing at the way she felt weightlessness, then the panic that came from realizing that there was nothing below. But she pulled on her semblance, willing its invisible existence, and she felt her feet land on an invisible platform: It was a small, thin cube raised in the air. Then, the drain. She expected it to be larger, more substantial, draining her aura the way rockets did. But the drain was more similar to how she’d generate a small shield, undamaged from hits. Small, steady, and not exhausting her aura pool.

She could work with this. The Nevermore’s attention was focused on its downed sibling, back turned to her. So Leise took that opportunity to create two more steps in the sky (towards the direction of the tower), taking her time to aim, then let the arrow loose. It sailed, then hit the grimm, ice encasing its tail feathers.

Its body turned to her. Leise shot another arrow, ice spreading in its broad wings. Its red eyes found her. The arrow hit its neck. And then it flapped its wings, unleashing a terrifying caw that rattled Leise’s bones, speeding towards her. Throwing caution to the wind, she released another arrow aimed at its face, not even waiting to see if the ice dust hit anything as she dashed towards the tower, hoping that it would crash against the stone walls and down itself out of fury and rage.

Four more ice dust to go before I run out and depend on lightning and fire dust. I can work with this. Well, so long as I don’t die…

Thus far the initiation was going about as well as a slapped together experimental initiation could go. One of the nevermores was down, another had seen far better days and slowly the fight was coming to a close. 3 students had made it to the tower and were currently speaking to the princess, otherwise known as Grizz. A male student who said he was coaxed into doing this by Flint and was thrown into the cage by an unknown person named Crane. At the moment everything seemed to be going well. Well, until Liese shot the nevermore and then ran to the tower. See that's when it all went downhill.

You see, nevermores are not the brightest abominations on the planet and shooting them in the face really pisses them off. So when Leise did just that it turned all its attention to her. In a fit of rage, it charged straight to where she was currently running. The tower. In case you missed it there are currently 4 people at the top of the tower. Take a wild guess at what was going to happen next.

Grizz watched as a new female approached and cut a hole in the cage, he stood mouth agape and threw his hands out in front of himself "Yo, what is this, just cut the rest of the cage lady and set me free. I'm dying of starvation in here!" he says. As he said that he proceeded to stuff his face with more beef jerky proving to those standing before him and the world that he was not dying of starvation, quite the opposite actually. The lady continued to speak saying that her cutting a hole in the cage was a boring idea and that crashing a nevermore into the cage sounded way better. Grizz being of the sane party here shook his head frantically "No, NO, I want to live man, there are so many flavors of beef jerky I need to taste. I mean think about it, if I die now how will I ever get better at putting on makeup. Cause when I was crying earlier and I looked into my tear pool let me just say my face looked hideous and I bet you it's still like that." see Grizz was raising a good point here but that's when everything went wrong. The tower shook.

"What was that?"

A Nevermore Grizz. It was a nevermore. The entire tower shook as a massive bird slammed into the tower hoping to hit Leise but instead hitting the tower. Whoops. It was do or die now, in what felt like seconds the tower was coming down. Entropia, who was one of the 4 in the birdcage area decided to do the smart thing and just smash a hole in the cage, freeing Grizz. But it was not fast enough, the structural stability of the tower was far weaker then Flint anticipated. In mere moments the entire structure crumbled and the 3 students and Grizz came crashing into the rocky cliff the tower was next to.

As the dust settled the 4 found themselves in a cave, getting up and patting themselves off they felt something was off. As all looked forward a cave painting could be seen as the light pierced the dust. It was a smiling grimm dragon. It was a peculiar thing to see but they were pulled away from it as a pained screech could be heard from outside. The four walked to the hole the tower had made into the cave and stood in the sunlight. In front of them, both nevermores had been crushed by the tower, thus ending the initiation.

As the initiation came to a thrilling end airships came down and picked the students up. Once they got back to the school Flint did a small speech with Carmine and showed the Students to their living quarters. They now had time to talk and hang out while the day came to an end.
