has been around the block
"It will be alright now." Shere peeked his head inside as he spoke, more to the kidnapped girls than to Sasha. He took a good look at the three, trying to ascertain their condition as best he could, and he flashed a winning smile and then it was back to business. He seemed to be mostly ignoring Carter even as he turned to face him, and if he hadn't given Stella a nod you'd think he was ignoring her too. His gaze traced a line between the bandit leader and himself, measuring the distance, he tapped toe and heel on the floor to test his footing. "Me? I am just a pugilist passing through, and you should be throwing in the towel."
Shere knew that it was unlikely for this person to surrender and so acted in concert with Stella, an honorable duel this was not after all. As the machine girl began her approach so did he, towards the corner of the building standing between him and Carter. Why the corner? Because it blocked the direct angle of attack from the bandit's right arm, the sword arm that he would be leading with, while Shere's own right was free to attack. He didn't use his hand, however. The dandy stepped into range, planted his left foot and for the briefest of moments his whole body rested atop his toes like a dancer en pointe.
On his tiptoes Shere pivoted and in that rotation of his entire body he launched his right leg around the corner, a scything kick aimed at the body to crush ribs or the arm or both, to sandwich Carter between shin and wall and leave him open for Stella's charge. But rather than press the attack or stand there admiring his work, the very moment both feet were once again under him he leapt backwards in continuous, fluid motion, so that within the blink of an eye he was once again standing with his back to Sasha and the hostages. It was as though he were guarding the door, and as though he had never left.
