A gamble with death...
LOS ANGELES, 1993.

Of these three things, the Dealer is sure.

One: You're a familiar face at the Abel-Bodeya Casino, a high rise resort on the California coast. Whether you're an employee, a gambler, or a member of the blacklist, this is where you caught the Dealer's eye.

Two: You've been burned by the world, and you do what you can to survive. There are people standing between you and a happy life; People like Camden Abel, the Casino owner. You know this, and a part of you longs to do something about it.

Three: You've got skills, resources, or plain ambition that the Dealer has deemed teeming with potential. After what you've been through, you might just be willing and able to use it to kill if it means getting what you want. And the Dealer would be happy to nudge you in that direction, if you're so inclined.

The Dealer has their own reasons for wanting Camden Abel dead, and more than enough money to pay you and the rest of your crew to get the job done discreetly. And once he's buried, well--the Dealer has more than one card up their sleeve, and plenty of targets to send your way. It's a gamble, but the rules of the game are simple:

Kill the target.
Don't get caught.
Collect.
RISK, RISK, RISK!

queen of hearts
Some say you're nothing more than a pretty face, but putting that to use is another skill entirely. You charmed your way out of a destiny of destitution and into life in the city, singing in the lounge at the Abel-Bodeya Casino. In a perfect world this would be your happily ever after: But now your pay barely seems to make ends meet, and Camden Abel is eager to turn you into the Casino's sex symbol to line his pockets, whether or not that's part of your dreams of performance.
The Dealer offers a chance to turn the tables once and for all with your charm. You can carve out all the hearts that wronged you, and make a fortune beyond your wildest dreams while doing it.

jack of spades
On the outside you seem like a mild-mannered blue-color employee, coming to the Abel-Bodeya on occasion to gamble away your hard-earned cash. With a bag of tools and some industry knowledge at your disposal, you're always willing to lend a helping hand, even if you can barely make ends meet yourself.
Few have seen the glimpses into something beyond that gentle demeanor--like when you were dragged out of the Abel-Bodeya for beating a man bloody after he cheated you at cards. You're afraid of yourself, your rage, and the things it might make you do. But the Dealer sees potential. With their guiding hand, maybe you can put that penchant for violence to good use, and still do some good for the little guy.

king of diamonds
Growing up, you developed a keen eye for your environment, perfect for morphing into whatever kind of socialite the circumstances needed. But one slip up too many and you were disowned, the family fortune ripped away. Now, your skills come most in handy at the poker table.
You might keep some traces of your highbrow past in your demeanor, but at this point, you know that the only way you can claw your way back is to get your hands dirty, and you'll do anything to get ahead. The Dealer knows this, and they see the way you can read any poker face, turning every environment into a chess match. If you can use that skill to kill a man without getting caught, you'll be on your way back to fortune after all.

ace of clubs
There are better things to do with cards than gamble. Before the queen of hearts, your magic show was the primary entertainment at the Abel-Bodeya. Your employment came to an abrupt end when you were caught pickpocketing crowd members during one of the shows. You're more upset with being caught than losing your job.
After all, sleight of hand is all you have. You make your living as a pickpocket and master of misdirection. Before the Casino, you tried your hand at a series of cons, and you've managed to make a decent living. But now your string of petty crimes is starting to catch up with you, and it seems like a matter of time before an angry victim of your magic tricks comes knocking. The Dealer is giving you a chance to run from consequence yet again, and all you have to do is help make a man's life disappear.

wild card
A Canasta is a meld of at least seven cards, but I'm looking for a total of four to ten players, depending on interest. If you have a character pitch you'd like to make outside the roles, feel free to run it by me over dms or just shoot out an application as you see fit!

guidelines...
hellooo! this is an organized crime/assassination rp with the hopes of focusing on character development over a long period of time. in the best of worlds this is the first of many hits bringing out characters together for the length of the job, and there will be a multi month/year timeskip before they see each other again for the next one! our first arc will start in the 90s with our characters in their early/mid twenties, and there's plenty of room for them to grow as time passes.

hopefully this premise allows people to dip out and come in fairly frequently between story arcs. but i know how hard it is to keep a group thread going, so let's just start here at the beginning for now, yeah? it's up to our little group to get that rich guy Gone!

I really only have a couple of guidelines:

due to serious subject matter, this group is strictly 18+. please be comfortable with basically all adult themes (within site guidelines), and keep the maturity to treat all heavy themes with care.

roles are not first come first serve, but if we get multiple good applications for the same role, i'll likely just ask one or the other to tweak things a bit so there isn't too much overlap. the number of roles are flexible, as are the details--if there's anything you'd like to change about any role, you can feel free to run it by me! i'm most interested in character development over time, so it's most important to me that everyone have the freedom to make the character that works best for them.

that being all, i hope this caught some interest! i'll get a temp ooc and a character sheet page up soon.
