Mao goes as herself because she's too poor to make or buy a good costume. Alternatively, she picks out casual smart clothes, a bow tie, and an overcoat from the dumpster of her wardrobe and goes as either Newt from Fantastic Beasts or one of the Doctors (probably smith).

Avery would probably be in the same boat and try to make a costume using his bubbles secretion and anything he found in the dumpster xD

Off topic, but the Kahuna theme from Pokemon SuMo would most likely fit Mao's, if ever, combat sequence against her students. Menacing initially, then dives straight into a completely different territory entirely. Probably because she won't even directly confront them and just put tons of obstacles in their way while taunting them
