Realistic or Modern Bennington High for Special Scholars

Lucas glanced between the four of them, wondering the exact question. Did they all know each other? He felt a little awkward just standing there, like an outsider. He felt a strange pressure in his head at the thought. Not again. He couldn't be the outsider again. He felt the pressure build. Definitely not this again. Every time he'd felt it, he lost time. The time and the memories disappeared, as if they never existed. "I, uh, I'll be right back."

Xavier watched Lucas leave the room and was slightly confused by how the other boy was acting. Standing up, he ignored the insistent drone of voices in the back of his mind and smiled sheepishly at Roxanne, Viviana, and her brother*. "I'll be back in a few," he said simply then slipped out, following Lucas and jogging a few steps until he was walking in stride with him. "If it's not too personal," he began slowly, pushing his hands deep in his pockets. "What's your diagnosis?"

(*Can we give this kid a name?)

Viviana smiled as her brother waved his hand. "Its cool." They watched as the two boys and then looked at Roxanna.

"Oh, um, Mike this is Roxanne and that cute blonde guy is Xavier, but I don't know the last guy," Viviana explained.

Her older brother, Mike, nodded and looked at Roxanne with curiosity.

"By the by, they're all diagnosed students here," Viviana added, knowing his confused look completely.

"Depression with Psychotic Features." Lucas managed to spit out, despite the light in the room slowly fading away. "But I don't know what's wrong with me. I hear things, but there's something else going on- Ah!" He brought his hand to touch just over his left eye. "What about you?" He looked at Xavier only to find that tunnel vision was setting in and a halo of darkness surrounded his face. "You seem normal enough. Why are you here?"

Xavier listened to Lucas and cast him a worried look when he touched his eye. He could see that Lucas was trying to play it down, so he figured he'd just act like nothing was wrong since -for all he knew- nothing could be wrong. He smiled wryly and said, "No, I'm definitely not normal. I have paranoid schizophrenia, but I just hide my crazy better than most." He smiled again, then raised an eyebrow at Lucas. "Hey, you wanna sit down or see a nurse? You look kinda bad."

"What, so they can give me more pills," Lucas' tone took a darker twist,"More pills that don't work, that make me feel like shit? I don't think so." He took in a deep breath and removed his hand from his face. His overall demeanor changed, from that of a timid young man to a more lazily confident one. He stretched, cracking his knuckles, and smiled a genuine smile. "I don't think so. Screw that."

"How'd you get settled with her, Mike?" Roxanne asked. Her eyes shot to Viviana at the comment about Xavier being cute. "Back off," she snapped. "He isn't interested in you."

Mike suddenly hugged Viviana. "What are you talking about? She's my little sister that's all, what's the big deal?"

Viviana rolled her eyes at Roxanne's comment. "He's not interested in you either."

Xavier paused mid step, then quickly continued and acted like nothing had happened. His mind ran through every personality and identity disorder that he knew and would cause such a big swing. 'Maybe bipolar, or DID,' he thought, but kept these thoughts to himself. Instead, he glanced at Lucas. "Uh, no. Hell no. I was going to suggest liquid ibuprofen, that way they wouldn't slip you any weird pills. I haven't taken any in months, and would never trust the nurses to just give you aspirin."

"That's because he's gay," Roxanne said with an eye roll. "You are aware of what that means, aren't you?" She glanced at Mike. "The big deal is that she's one of the wardens here, Mike. She's one of the people trying to hurt us, trying to keep us here."

Viviana looked Roxanna surprised as she muttered under her breath, "Overreact much?" She then looked at her brother after Roxanne's they want to hurt us speech. "See? Now you owe me desert."

Mike chuckled as he said, "Alright, alright," to Vivian and then to Roxanne, "they're not trying to keep us hear, they're trying to help understand our sickness and in the process help us. I'm actually being released after this year but am trying to get a job HERE as a teacher."

Viviana looked at Roxanne and did a sassy snap. "I think my brother just got you."

"No, I don't want any more drugs. There's nothing wrong with me. My headache's gone, thank God it's gone!" Luke felt an amazing rush wash over him. Never mind the fact that he was trapped in an asylum; he was alive. That was all that mattered at this point. The drugs could never work, because he was stronger than the pills. As his appreciation for life doubled by the second, he heard some loud noises come from the room that the two had left.

"Oooh, drama, my favorite," He drawled sarcastically, but was a little relieved to have the spotlight off of him. He didn't want to cause any drama of his own. He much preferred other people's drama, whether it be Lucas' mom screwing his uncle or a fight at the most recent hospital. "Shall we go?"

"Your brother didn't 'get' me." Roxanne rolled her eyes, biting back the name she wanted to call the annoying girl. "He's wrong. Sorry, Mike, apparently they got you. Sad, too. You're cute."

Xavier was still confused at what was going on with Lucas, but he finally brushed it off as no big deal. So what of the kid has mood swings? Lots of other students do too, and it's usually caused by the drugs they have to take. He smiled a little when Lucas pointed out the noise, and laughed silently. Of course Roxanne would pick a fight as soon as he was out of the room. "Yeah, let's go," he said. Not two seconds later he paused and blushed sheepishly. "Um, where is it we're going again? I forgot."

Mike's eyes widened at Roxanne's behavior and he looked at his sister for backup.

Viviana only shook her head. She knew a lot of patients who felt just like they did, and her only explanation for it is that they either got a bad therapist or bad pills, which both can be changed. Every patient has a different way of getting better or at least look better since they're is no cure to most mental diseases. "Maybe I should get out of here, Mike," she said as she hugged her brother.

"But you won't be able to see me as much after today when classes start...." Mike argued.

"In there. I want to watch." Luke explained and ducked into the room where Viviana seemed to almost be leaving. Luke was a tad bit disappointed. He seemed to thrive on drama, and whatever that made him, then he was that.

Roxanne glanced behind her. "Xavier, nice of you to join us," she said, ignoring Luke and instead focusing on her best friend as he stood beyond the open doorway. "The shrinks seem to have brainwashed Mike here."

Xavier nodded, figuring that they probably were on their way back to the room from doing something. He smiled at Roxanne when he saw her but rolled his eyes. "I don't think they brainwashed him. Some kids actually take their pills and it helps them. Others like us can manage fine without most of the time without medication," he said. His smiled suddenly dropped off and he glanced at Viviana almost fearfully. Of course he had to forget a shrink-in-training was in the room when he talked about not taking meds. "I mean... Uh... It's..." He looked around the room for something to provide an answer, finding none but spotting several shadows in the corners that seemed to be watching him.

Roxanne was lucky Xavier spoke before she did, because she wasn't about to hear it when she hasn't done anything with her brother's illness or therapy, she actually made it worse for a time. She looked at Xavier and waved him off. "Don't look so scared like I'm Jason from Friday the 13th okay? Its actually great that you can function without taking pills, unless your schizophrenia is getting worse and your just great at hiding it, that's bad....."

Xavier relaxed a little and smiled at Viviana. He should have figured that she wouldn't turn him in, since she wasn't like all the other crazy acting shrinks. "Don't worry, it's fine. There's still symptoms that show up, but nothing really bad," he said honestly. Glancing around the room he discreetly took a few steps towards where Roxanne was, still having the feeling that there was something in the corners watching him and that it was safer to stand closer to a group. Smiling like nothing was wrong, he put his hands in his pockets and ignored the quiet laughter from the shadows.

"C'mon, Xavier, let's get out of here." The redhead brushed past him, walking outside before turning, waiting for him before she continued in the direction of their rooms. She didn't feel like walking back alone.

Xavier nodded but didn't say anything, hurrying to catch up with his best friend. Looking over his shoulder he smiled and waved to the others, casting a quick glance to the corners. He forced himself to keep a straight face when he noticed how the shadows were stretching forward towards him, turning back around and jogging the few steps to catch up with Roxanne. He put his hands in his pockets and started humming, trying to keep his mind busy.

Viviana sighed as she said, "I guess I should go too so you can get acquainted to your roommate." She hugged her brother and waved to Lucas before leaving the room and heading down to her own. She was thinking about Xavier's shifty eyes though and was slightly worried.

As Viviana left their room, Luke bit back a grimace. There goes the drama as well as the entertainment. Time for him to leave, he supposed. With a sigh, he gave up his control over the body and let the weaker one come back in. Lucas came to in front of Mike, who stood, silent, before him.

"So I guess I'm your roommate," Lucas said, to break the awkwardness of the situation.\
