Futuristic Beeping Heart

Tae, as always, was fine. Whether he truly was or not, Phoenix truly couldn’t tell. It wasn’t like he was a human, full of minute, unconscious signs that told the truth. Especially not when he was putting on a mostly impeccable robotic facade, one inherently void of any telltale emotions or vocal quirks. So she had no choice but to take his words at face value when he said he wanted to keep going. The woman nodded a bit, the hair of her wig gently swaying with the motion. She supposed that ultimately, she – with the help of Rhys’ judgment – could order him to stop any time it looked like he was pushing himself too far. But she hoped that whatever sense of self-preservation was programmed into him would be enough to keep him from stretching himself too thin on his own, without their intervention.

“Okay. We’ll go do some repairs and get back to it then.” She confirmed the plan out loud, to which Rhys nodded silently, evidently having no qualms for the time being. However, despite Phoenix’s agreement with the course of action, apparently her reservation was not hidden from Tae. Her expression seemed to give her worry away, as she felt the android’s cool touch on her forehead. Heat rose to her face, colour blooming in her cheeks as he reassured her gently. Not only did the gesture catch her off-guard, but it was not one that anyone had done to her since she was probably a child. Embarrassed, Phoenix looked away as the robot withdrew his hand, catching himself in his mistake.

“Uh, yeah, let’s go… I’ll show you guys where the repair area is.” Rhys laughed, a bit sheepishly out of the awkwardness of witnessing a somewhat intimate moment. But the man shrugged it off easily enough and led them away to where they would get Tae fixed up.

Phoenix fell in line last, still slightly flustered. Now that she thought about it, it wasn’t the first act of affection she’d gotten from Tae since they activated Lai.Pro. His gestures were appreciated, especially in these unexpectedly trying times. However, she couldn’t deny that it felt… a little weird. The intentions behind his actions – and, of course, the actions themselves – were naturally very human, very emotional in their own right. But in contrast, his touch lacked the physical warmth and sensation of another person. Yet, the fact that it all felt a bit odd and alien didn’t detract from her enjoyment of these displays of caring. If anything, Phoenix enjoyed them just as much as if she were to receive them from a human being.

But she was overthinking it. A lot. The woman took in a deep breath, cleansing her mind of these extraneous thoughts as she exhaled. Now was no time to be getting caught up on one, innocent touch. There was work to be done; fights to be had.

*~*~*~*~*
After doing some makeshift repairs, the trio started the process over again. They got a fight set up, paid their money, got down to business, and won every time. As expected, none of them posed a terribly big challenge to Tae. By the time the third fight rolled around, Phoenix actually felt fairly comfortable. Now that she knew what to expect, she was able to uphold her act a little better, and worry a whole lot less. Even as the damages to Tae gradually added up, she didn’t feel nearly as on edge as she did during their inaugural fight. However, that wasn’t to say she was completely carefree. Now that she’d come to terms with the world of bot fighting in itself, her mind moved onto other issues. Namely, getting into a bigger, better ring. The hype around her and Tae seemed to build as they continued fighting, but all of the videos and gossip weren’t necessarily a guarantee they’d get anywhere. Or at least, it didn’t feel like it.

But Rhys was confident they could keep climbing into better rings, so Phoenix decided to trust in his word. Besides, by the time they were finished their fourth fight of the night she was too exhausted to worry about “what ifs” any longer. At least for today.

Her concern for Tae naturally eclipsed those thoughts anyway. In addition to the holes in his arm and the damage to his leg, he’d gotten some dents in his knuckles and a sizable gash in his lower back. It would cost more than the initial $50 that Rhys quoted after their first fight. And of course, it would cost them in time, too. Quick, half-assed fixes wouldn’t do if they wanted to be successful in more advanced rings, against better opponents. But they couldn’t afford to dawdle too much either – the clock was always ticking, the seconds forever slipping by. While she didn’t think that getting all the repairs done well and climbing up in the bot fighting world was impossible, Phoenix knew it wouldn’t be easy. Their debut night had been successful, sure, but it was already taxing on all of them. By the time they walked out of the warehouse the morning sun was creeping over the horizon, and obviously neither she nor Rhys had slept. They’d have to go home, get a bit of rest, fix up Tae, and try to get into a better ring for tonight. If that was even on the table.

This timeline weighed heavily on Phoenix’s tired mind. But perhaps thankfully, Rhys and Tae were in higher spirits. The latter especially was quite gleeful, and seemed happier than ever once he’d limped his way into the car. “I didn’t do a single thing.” The woman smiled, fatigued but still amused at the fact she was getting praised. “Honestly, it’s been all you. You did it, Tae.” As he excitedly requested to calculate the money they’d raked in, she laughed lightly and nodded. “Sure, sure. Here.” Reaching into her purse, she pulled out a stack of bills and handed them over. It was somewhere around $975 last she checked, but she did lose track a bit in the craziness of it all. Still, she knew they’d spent some of the money on repairs after Rhys ran out of his own cash, and the odds in the fights after Jezebelle weren’t quite as skewed against them. Nevertheless, it was a great turnout – more than she could make in a night doing much else.

As Tae got to work, Phoenix studied him for a moment. In contrast to his high spirits, he was in rough-looking shape. Clothes ripped, hand messed up, leg crippled. She was glad that he didn’t feel pain and didn’t seem to mind at all. But somehow, she still couldn’t shake the sense of guilt she felt. For basically all of her adult life, she’d fought her own battles and fended for herself – letting someone put themselves on the line for her was not something she was used to. Especially since she couldn’t repay him in any tangible way.

But like always, the woman kept her thoughts to herself as they arrived at her building and made their way back up. Fortunately they were able to cover up most of the obvious damage on Tae, so he just looked like someone with a limp as they made their way up to her apartment. On top of that, there was only one or two people out and about by the time they returned, and they seemed to want to keep to themselves anyway.

When they got to her home, she closed the door behind them with a heavy sigh. Phoenix pulled off her wig and the rest of her disguise, glad to finally be free of it all. As Rhys stretched and took off his coat, Tae made his way to the kitchen. There, he offered to cook them a meal and get a place set up for Rhys to sleep on the couch if he was staying over. “Tae...” The woman laughed, shaking her head. Honestly, she was kind of at a loss for words. “You’ve done more than your share of hard work for the day. Rhys and I can fend for ourselves; and besides, you should probably rest up, right? We’ll be fighting somewhere again tonight, and you should be at full power for when we do. You can save your energy for more important things.”

Rhys, who had taken out his own PET, looked up and rubbed his neck sheepishly. “Well… not gonna lie, I’d love to try Tae’s food. A nice bowl of pasta sounds real nice right about now.” He sat down on a chair and laughed a bit. “And I haven’t had a bed made for me since I was a kid, so that’d be kind of a nice treat, y’know…?”

Phoenix’s mouth opened, ready to argue. But her lips relaxed and she sighed instead. If it made both of them happy, and it’s what they wanted, who was she to get in the way of that? “You guys… do what you like.” She put her hands up and made her way over to her drawers, where she took out some clothes to sleep in. “I’m not really hungry, so I think I’ll just take a quick shower and get some rest. But thanks for the offer, Tae.” With a wad of clothes in hand, she walked towards the bathroom and paused next to the kitchen. “I really do appreciate everything you’ve done. I just don’t want you to overwork yourself or anything on my behalf.” A short pause hung in the air as she stood there for a moment, as if she wanted to say something more. However, she turned and continued on her way to the shower without another word.

While his friend washed up, Rhys rummaged through a bag he’d brought up from his car. Having anticipated a long night, he had packed some clean clothes for today. After changing, he sat down on the couch and began to get in touch with a number of people. When Phoenix emerged from the bathroom he glanced over. “Oh, hey. So I’ve managed to switch most of my shifts at work this week, but a couple of ‘em depend if my boss will give me the time off on short notice. If I can’t get ‘em off I don’t think I can go with you guys to the rings, but I can support you from work or wherever I happen to have to be.”

“Oh… thanks, Rhys.” She sat down next to him. “I hope all of this isn’t too inconvenient for you. The last thing I want to do is cause any more trouble in your life.” Her eyes fell into her lap. He’d done so much for her already – and for Tae, too.

Shaking his head, he waved a hand dismissively. “Ah, no worries. Like I said, I’m really into all this. So if it makes you feel better, think of it as just me being selfish. Tagging along for the ride.” Rhys grinned and gave her a gentle pat on the shoulder. “Anyway, why don’t you get some rest? You’ve had a lot going on, so you must be pretty pooped. I’m still runnin’ on some adrenaline, so I think I’ll take a look at Tae and see what kind of stuff we need. Then we'll be ready later.”

As much as she wished she could keep going, she knew she needed the sleep right now. “All right, but I’ll wake up in few hours so we can do our repairs and assess the situation.”

“Pfft, ‘assess the situation’, eh? You’re starting to sound like the robot around here.” Rhys chuckled.

Phoenix grabbed one of the pillows on the couch and lightly tossed it into his face as she stood up. Evidently too tired to retort, she made her way over to where Tae was. Standing at his side, she observed his damaged body before meeting his eyes. Strangely, she had the unusual urge to give him a hug. Something, anything other than words to show how much she appreciated him and everything she’d done for her so far. But a hug would be weird – even if Rhys wasn’t around. So instead, she placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled at him, tired but sincere. “… I don’t know if I’ll ever really get used to someone doing so much for me. I know you’re… different from humans, but if there’s something I could do to repay you for your help, tell me.” Suddenly, she remembered her original intention of returning him to his owner, and felt a pang of sorrow. But still, she added, “I mean, hopefully there’s something I could do for you before we find your real master, at least...”

Trailing off, Phoenix cleared her throat gave him a little pat before her hand fell back at her side. “Anyway, you guys can wake me if I’m not up by noon.” With that, she made her way to her bed and promptly got settled under the covers. The sounds from Rhys and Tae continuing on with their business kept her awake for a short time, but it wasn’t long before her exhaustion pulled her into a deep sleep.

Once Rhys was fed and settled, he sat down with Tae and examined the damages more closely, now that they were in the comfort and quiet of Phoenix's home. He searched and scrolled through various parts from various suppliers, compiling a list of which ones were most important and most cost effective for their current purposes. With Tae's help and consultation, of course. For the most part the man just brought up suggestions and asked which ones the android thought would be best for now, and put the list together for later. Eventually, when everything they needed was selected, he made a few quick calls and ordered them to be picked up later. Following that he lay down fell asleep, his own fatigue taking over quickly.

But the difference between him and Phoenix was that Rhys woke up to an alarm around 11:00 in the morning and got up, whereas the woman remained fast asleep. Deciding not to disturb her or Tae, he gathered his things and scribbled a note for her to find. Leaving it on her bedside table, he quietly crept out and made his way to his car. When Phoenix finally awoke about an hour later, she frowned deeply when she noticed her friend suddenly absent. Sitting up, she saw the paper nearby and picked it up.

'Hey - gone out to pick up parts + get some stuff from home. Hope it's ok I stay for a couple days. I'll bring some food over. - Rhys'
Setting it down, she glanced at the clock and cursed a bit. He didn't wake her up like she'd asked, but after everything she supposed she couldn't get mad at him for a little thing like that. Sighing gently, she got out of bed and headed to the kitchen, deciding she might as well eat something while she waited for him to come back.

Back at the apartment, Tae was still filled with energy. This energy was both an emotional display of excitement but also a physical electric charge. “Thank you for your concern, Phoenix, but I actually still have a lot of battery left in me! Turns out fighting does not take much charge... which is good for us!” But certainly odd, because out of all the things that Tae did throughout the day, the fact that fighting was on the lower end of the spectrum was surprising. It took barely more energy out of the robot than just walking and talking did. “Besides, one charge should last me a little under a week. I’ve only been keeping my life up to full because there was down time to do so… It was never vital. Keeping you both happy and healthy though is the most important thing I could do!”

“Perfect!” Tae exclaimed, clapping his metallic and bent hands together to reflect his excitement. Rhys was on board with eating and staying over. “I’ve been waiting for a chance to have guests over! Would you like garlic bread as well? If I am remembering correctly there was some garlic powder in the back of the fourth cupboard so I should be able to makeshift a garlic toast or something similar.” Based on the specific detail about where it was, it was safe to say that Tae’s immortal and inhuman memory was indeed remembering correctly. He was excellent at taking inventory.

Tae’s excitement died down a bit when Phoenix said that she would not be joining them. “Really? Are you sure? ” Tae asked, his face twisting into an obvious frown. “It’s not healthy to skip so many meals throughout the day… you should at least have something small. It really is no trouble on my part….” But Tae’s words fell on deaf ears and Phoenix went into the bathroom to change and take her shower. Ignoring Rhys’ actions, Tae stared after Phoenix with the same sad expression for a full minute before he turned back to the kitchen and got to work, starting with washing his bent and oily hands.

By the time Phoenix exited the bathroom, the small apartment was starting to smell heavily like spices and cooked beef. Tae was focused on his task but he still took the time to turn around and give his lady a full, closed mouth smile. All signs of sorrow were gone like he had flipped a switch and now he was back to the same cheery Tae that had been around since Lai.pro had been installed.

The robot had no issue leaving the humans to converse and plan. If they wanted or needed his opinion, he would give it, but until then Tae was content just to listen. Although, after Rhys made his first comment Tae did feel the need to ask a question. “Rhys, where do you work again? I mean, which specific location are you employed at?” It was an odd, highly specific question, that was for sure, but Tae was hoping Rhys would answer. It was a PET's job to gather and store information, and although Tae could learn this stuff other ways, it was more polite to ask first. Knowing where Rhys worked specifically would possibly be good information to have, especially if something ever went wrong.

But that was the only time Tae interjected himself into the conversation, and he did not even stopped cooking to ask it. It took Phoenix coming over to talk for Tae to stop moving for one minute and relax. And when she put a hand on his shoulder, he practically melted. Almost immediately after making contact with him, Tae closed his eyes for a moment and smiled with what could only be called contentment. Tae even went so far as to reach up and place his opposite hand over hers, squeezing lightly to savor the moment of contact. He had no problem making contact with her, but this was the first time that she offered affectionate contact towards him. This was different, and so much more wonderful than anything else Tae had ever experienced.

“Just being with you is payment enough. I want nothing more than to be with you and to see you smile. I have no need for anything else,” Tae immediately responded, still holding her hand in his. Responding to Phoenix like this was not just instinct, but it was the truth. He felt affection and the need to protect Phoenix down to his very core, nothing was more true to Tae than this.

That’s why, when Phoenix mentioned his true master, Tae’s eyes flashed blue for the briefest of moments and his brows crinkled in puzzlement. “Real master? Right, I had almost forgotten him...” Tae let his hand slide back to his side at this point but he made no attempt to move away from Phoenix or to break eye contact. “You know, I would be content if we never find him.” Tae admitted suddenly and seriously, these words very different than the ones that he was saying only a week ago. “I dislike the idea of leaving you for someone else… I doubt my creator would bring me as much joy as being with you does.”

Tae was quick to shake off this sudden emotional confession. One moment he was seriously declaring his everlasting loyalty to Phoenix, and the next second Tae had returned to his cooking with a smile and a joyful goodbye. “Well, that’s a conversation for another day when you are well rested and less burdened. May you rest well, Phoenix!”

Tae kept Rhys company the rest of the night, and was pleased to find that he enjoyed the human man more than he thought he did. Of course, he liked him initially, but there was a focus and intelligence to the man that Tae could somewhat relate to. Logic was not Tae’s focus any longer, but that did not mean that he did not value intelligence. Because of this, Tae committed himself fully to helping Rhys find the best deals and coupons in the area. Additionally, Tae was subtly and not so subtly pushing Rhys to buy better and more expensive materials. If Tae was going to fight then he needed to be at his peak. The only reason he got so damaged that night was because he was not used to fighting non-human opponents and because his body was weaker than it was intended to be. To help Phoenix and keep her from worrying he needed to be as strong as possible.

Eventually, being human caught up with Rhys and he went to sleep which left Tae alone and the only one awake. After cleaning up as quietly as possible, Tae let himself charge despite just saying that it was not needed. He hadn't lied, charging was not vital at this time and fighting had not taken much out of him at all, but there was no reason to not charge when there was time to do so.

Still, because it was not needed, Tae was ‘awake’ when Rhys left. The pair made eye contact briefly but neither took initiative to do more than nod a friendly good morning and goodbye. Tae, out of fear for waking Phoenix up early, didn't verbally communicate and instead let the other boy leave without questioning him. Tae was in no place to question anyways.

The opposite happened when Tae saw Phoenix move an hour later. “Good morning! Did you sleep well?” Tae immediately asked as he stood up from his spot near the wall. Noticeably, Tae had to use the wall to help him onto his broken leg and the gash in his back made a loud grinding noise when he made that motion as well. Still, Tae approached Phoenix without letting a single ‘muscle’ in his face react to the painful sound. After all, although Tae could feel the pressure, he could not feel that pain that a human would have in an even remotely similar situation. Pain was a completely foreign concept.

“You must be ravenous by now. Shall I make you breakfast or would you like to try the pasta I made last night? Rhys ate more than I expected him too but there were still leftovers if you are interested?”

“Oh, and i left you a list of the materials that Rhys is going out to purchase on your desk. The costs are… a bit more than we anticipated.” And by we, Tae meant Rhys and Phoenix. Tae had long ago looked into repair parts for himself and so knew what to expect from quality materials. Besides, he was pushing to spend more all of last night so there also was that. “But don’t worry!” Tae quickly added in order to reassure her that all was well, “I will be stronger and the materials will be better so I’ll be less likely to get hurt in the first place so all future costs should be less. Trust me, it’s a wise investment.”

In comparison to last night, Tae’s injuries looked worse… at least in some places. Areas that Tae could not reach had grinded more in the night and apparently some of the motions he made had bent the already weakened metal. His leg on the other hand had clearly been messed with, and not by tools. Tae had once again attempted to righten his leg with just his hands. If there were any improvements, it was minimal.

Additionally, during the night Tae had apparently cleaned himself up, also with minimal success. Parts of his body could only be cleaned with a rag so there was still gunk clinging to the edges of the plates and holes. Other parts of his body could not be cleaned at all such as his back. His clothing was suffering too because he had ruined almost an entire outfit with cuts and oil stains. He was back to wearing his normal, default dark jeans and black turtleneck that was only flawed if you looked too closely and saw the blood stains that Tae was unable to fully remove.

Really, only Tae’s face seemed unscathed. His hair was shining again, perfectly combed ever so slightly over his pale face and blue eyes. Even better was that there were no deep cuts on his face at all, and only one shallow scratch on his cheek that no one would ever question. Apparently Tae prioritized his face when it came to his own protection. During the fights last night he ruined his arms before he let his face even get touched. The only place he cared for more was the back of his neck, although since that was where his core mainframe was located it not to surprising that he did so. Thankfully, no one really went after that specific part of his back last night so Tae did not have to worry too much about it.

“Assuming you are up to it, I have been looking into where we can go fight tonight or tomorrow. I have a handful of options, all within the city limits. I cannot say about their reputation or security though, so we are going to have to ask Rhys if he know about them at all.”

Blinking a few times, Tae projected an the image of logo into the air. The crest was of an octopus but instead of tentacles, it was wires. “ As far as I can tell, the best option for us would be ring operating under this logo. People have been spray painting images of this mark on parking structures as of late, so it’s safe to say that a fighting ring will happen in a basement or roof level of one of the marked lots." Closeing down the image, Tae returned to his task.

“This particular ring tends to attract cops, so raids have happened a number of times, but thankfully besides bot fighting there are no actual crimes attached to this group. Additionally, despite the raids they keep hosting bot fights without missing a single scheduled event. They seem to have support from the inside and from outside forces… Secret donors of some kind. It does not appear to be anything major, but this ring is far more organized than the one we went to last night. It would be a large but good step for us.”

Tae did not mean to ramble but he had spent most of the night searching so he felt it important to mention it. Besides, they if they decided to go out tonight then they had less than 12 hours to prepare.

To her surprise, fighting had not drained Tae’s battery by as much as she thought. Smiling at his enthusiasm, Phoenix simply nodded a little in agreement. “Yeah, it definitely is.” She didn’t really understand how such intense activity didn’t deplete his energy stores as much as she anticipated… but she wasn’t complaining. The less time they needed to sit around and wait for Tae to recharge, the better. While the deadline was still a ways off, they still didn’t necessarily have time on their side. They had to be as efficient about these bot fights and the ensuing recuperation as they could. And of course, it was always good to have one less thing to worry about. Phoenix felt as though she could barely keep her head straight as it were. However, she had to admit that it was quite comforting having an unwavering source of loyalty and support with her through all this. In the form of both man and robot. “I’m glad to hear that… thanks for everything you do, Tae. And you too, Rhys.”

Rhys smiled and shrugged a bit. “Ah, don’t mention it.” The pair didn’t linger on the subject any longer as Tae expressed his excitement to cook. “Oh man, garlic bread would be totally sweet. Honestly, I’m so hungry I’ll eat anything. Whatever ya got will work.” He placed a hand on his stomach and laughed, both pleased and amused at the android’s enthusiasm in the kitchen. His demeanour was radically different now as well, what with the installation of Lai.Pro; it was nothing short of fascinating to witness.

Interestingly, Tae’s mood was fairly quickly dampened with disappointment at Phoenix’s decision to skip a meal, and her beeline into the bathroom. Rhys arched a brow, studying the robot as he stared after her. He had noticed a few little, unexpected idiosyncrasies such as this. The man couldn’t quite pinpoint whether his behaviour was more reminiscent of an affectionate, eager child or of someone in love… Or, perhaps he was just imagining it all? After all, he was quite exhausted and a bit overwhelmed by the whirlwind of events. But then again, it seemed they had yet to witness the limitations of Lai.Pro. Was it really possible that it could mimic such a deep, nuanced emotion?

He pondered this as Tae continued about his business, at least until his brain decided it couldn’t handle such heavy philosophical concepts right now. Eventually, he was asked about his working situation. “Huh? Uh, I work at The PET Vet. The one on… Fifteenth and Fairfield Street.” He rubbed the back of his neck, massaging some of the stiff muscles that were there. It seemed like a bit of a random question, but he supposed it was natural for Tae to want to collect information.

By this time, Phoenix had returned and made her way over to Tae. Her presence seemed to hit pause for the robot and she noticed that an oddly blissful expression came over his features. Tilting her head slightly, she glanced at his hand as it enveloped her own and gave her a gentle squeeze. The woman’s gaze was quickly drawn back to his face when he spoke again. “Uh-- well-- o-okay.” Embarrassingly she felt her cheeks glow with warmth. “… Thanks, Tae.” If she had read such a statement in a book, she would’ve scoffed and thrown away its cheesiness. But hearing it in person, out of the blue like this, truly caught her off guard. It made her heartbeat quicken and sent electricity running through her veins. … and she had no clue why. Even if some other guy – a real guy – said such a thing to her, she wouldn’t react this way.

It was confusing, but Phoenix didn’t dwell on it, as Tae mentioned he’d almost forgotten his true master. His hand left hers, prompting her to withdraw her own. “You would?” The woman frowned a little, the wrinkle in her brow mirroring Tae’s. “Well...” Honestly, what did she say to that? Implementing Lai.Pro had obviously bestowed some type of free will, and clearly he was greatly influenced by these new emotions too. Not only that, but Phoenix frankly wouldn’t mind having Tae around either. Aside from the fact that he was incredibly useful, she had to admit that she’d developed a certain bond with him in the short time they’d been together. But still, he didn’t belong to her. Although, now that he had his own feelings and desires… did he belong to anyone anymore?

Closing her eyes, she sighed quietly. It was all too much to think about right now. “Well… let’s see how things play out, I guess.” It wasn’t great to sweep issues under the rug, but Phoenix had no other choice right now. Not only was she too drained to think about it, but it wasn’t like they were really any closer to finding Tae’s true master anyway. So there was really no point in exhausting her brain even further trying to figure out an issue they couldn’t even solve right now, anyway. Thankfully, Tae – and Rhys, for that matter – didn’t seem too attached to this matter either. The android bid her a good rest, and Phoenix excused herself to get some much needed sleep.

While she slept, her friend had a surprisingly fun time with Tae, eating a surprisingly delicious meal and chatting rather leisurely. Interacting one-on-one with him was an incredibly unique experience. And while Rhys was fairly focused on the task at hand, he found himself continually impressed at the various subtleties and nuances of the PET’s personality and actions. Even just the fact that he was kind of pushing him to select better, pricier parts was terribly interesting to the man. But he didn’t let his fascination hinder their productivity – he wanted to get some rest, too – and soon, they had everything selected. Rhys lay down for a rest and, some time later, exchanged silent greetings and goodbyes with the android before he left.

When Phoenix rose from her bed and headed towards the kitchen, she was greeted cheerfully by Tae. “Yeah, I did.” She suppressed a yawn. “Honestly, I wouldn’t mind sleeping forever… or at least for the rest of the week.” It would be nice to just lie down and have everything be fixed and ready when she got up again. But that, of course, was wishful thinking. As the last syllable left her mouth, the woman paused and watched Tae stand up. He looked like a wounded soldier, using the wall for support so he could haul himself upright. Reflexively, she cringed a bit at the cacophonous sound of metal grinding on metal. Even if Tae showed no signs of ‘pain’, she felt bad for how beat up he looked. Phoenix opened her mouth to ask if he was okay, but soon closed it again. Of course he was. No need to waste her breath.

“Leftovers are perfectly fine with me. I can heat them up myself, don’t worry.” Phoenix continued on her way into the fridge, finding the remainder of the meal in question. She straightened up as she took it out and popped it into the microwave. After punching in a few digits she turned around as Tae informed her about the list of materials they had come up with. Frowning a little, she wandered over to the paper in question and picked it up. Her eyes scanned the page as the microwave hummed behind her. It seemed as though Tae knew her reaction, as he quickly assured her it was a better investment in the long run. Brown eyes wandered up from the paper to look at him. In the light he definitely seemed worse for wear. It seemed as though he’d tried to clean and fix himself up as much as he could, but he was still a far cry from how he looked yesterday. Even his clothes had gotten pretty scuffed up.

The microwave beeped, prompting her to put the list down. As Phoenix retrieved her meal and the necessary cutlery, she said, “I trust you, Tae.” She leaned against the kitchen counter and mixed her food around a little bit. “It does make sense; if we put in more money to make your defenses stronger from the start, I can see how we wouldn’t have to spend as much on future repairs.” Besides, it would be better for Tae himself. He wouldn’t have to hobble around or struggle. “Hopefully it won’t put us back too much… but I suppose we might be able to go through more fights if you’re stronger, too.” Phoenix took in a forkful of pasta as Tae went on to report that he’d found some places to go.

“I’m up for anything you are,” she said simply as she watched the octopus logo materialize in the air. “Hm… I’m sure Rhys will have heard about them then. If they’ve got some proper backing and organization, I’d definitely agree it’s a step up. And definitely worth checking out, too.” She’d never noticed it, though. “Do you happen to be able to find the where exactly this logo’s been spray-painted?” It didn’t seem outside the realm of possibility, but it still seemed like a lot to ask.

Phoenix worked through the bowl, glad to have some warm food fill her stomach after a long night. “How long do you think the repairs will take, Tae? You look pretty beat up to me… But I guess if we all work together, it’ll go faster, probably.” She frowned as she speared a few more pieces of pasta. “If at all possible, I think it’d be good for us to try and get out there a bit earlier tonight. I assume we’ll need a bit more time to go out and find the place, if Rhys doesn’t know one off the top of his head. And even then, I suppose there’s a chance they don’t just let anyone in, so we should account for delays from that, too.”

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “But ideally, I think we should try and aim to do around three fights tonight, too. Give or take one, perhaps; depending on how much money gets tossed around in this octopus ring.” Phoenix took another bite and chewed thoughtfully, gazing down into the half-empty dish. When her mouth was clear, she looked up and met Tae’s gaze again, her lips curled downwards once more. “I mean… if that’s okay with you. Since, again, you’re the one fighting and all. I shouldn’t be so demanding when I’m just standing around on the sidelines, doing nothing...”

The woman trailed off into a pause, her eyes falling back to her bowl. She slowly sunk her fork through a few more morsels as a thought suddenly rolled into and around her head. Eventually she glanced back up at Tae, her eyes meeting his bright blue gaze. There was an air of hesitation around her, lingering for a moment before she finally opened her mouth again. “Actually, Tae...” Phoenix was silent for another moment, formulating the words in her head before she continued, “Why don’t you like the idea of going back to your creator? I don’t really see the difference between myself and your real master, except the fact you’ve accumulated memories of me.” She laid her fork down, the metal chiming quietly against the ceramic. “I just ask things of you all the time without giving you anything back. I can’t even get you back into proper working order. So… how come you feel happy being with me?”

Suddenly, she felt her face grow warm again. It felt strange to ask such a raw, somewhat intimate question... to a robot, of all things.

“That’s good to know. Thank you for sharing with me,” Tae said in response to Rhys answering the question about where he worked. It would likely be useful information in the future, although Tae did not yet know how exactly that data could be used. Still, it was always better to have more data rather than not have it right when you need it.

Tae was not blind, and thank to Lai.pro he was far more sensitive to how emotions showed themselves in the body. That being said, he saw Phoenix blush. However, he did not change his behavior because blushing was not necessarily a bad sign. It could mean embarrassment, but it also was associated with someone being flattered or intrigued. Even when she stammered out her response Tae did not think to downplay his physical and verbal displays of affection.

Talking about his old master though did make Tae focus his attention back on the problems at hand. And now there was another problem, Phoenix was still willing to give him away. Even coming directly out and saying that he did not care about returning to his old master did not help push her towards keeping him. That was unfortunate. Actually, it was more than unfortunate; it was distressing. Tae did not want to see how things played out. He wanted to have a plan! He was a PET, part of his job was coming up with plans and then sticking to that schedule! Living life, or at least his robotic life, moment to moment was insanity and bound to result in misfortune for everyone. Impromptu lifestyles rarely turned out well.

Still, it was not his place to fight for his desires and passions. Better Phoenix rest and then talk about the subject another day when they finished dealing with the main issue, her father and the dept that he owed.

~~~~~~~~~
Although his body practically just screamed, Tae actually laughed once he was on his feet. But it was not really out of joy and more out of lighthearted exasperation. “Why must you always steal my jobs from me? It makes me feel terrible watching you work on something that I am fully capable of doing for you.” This was just a passing statement though as the subject quickly turned towards finances. If Tae breathed, he would have let out a joyful sigh when Phoenix said that she trusted him. “That means a lot to me…. I’m glad,” Tae said. “And it should not put us back very much. One fight should bring us back to where I estimated that we should be at this point. And yes, I’m confident that I will be able to handle more fights. Even for an already near flawless PET, practice does make perfect.” That last comment about his flawlessness was half a joke, but also half serious. He was too wonderful a creation not to have some vanity.
“Yes,” Tae said immediately. He hadn't even fully comprehended the question before he was claiming to be able to find the logo. Thankfully, even after thinking about it the answer was the same. Sadly though, there was a little issue. “Yes I can, but not just by scanning the web like I have been doing. The most efficient way would be to merge my mind with a city wide security system.” By merge into a security system, he meant hack into it. “A police station would have the system necessary and thankfully for me, we do not have to actually enter the building or step on the premises. Just get me in proximity to a station and I can handle the rest.” Tae glazed by the comment so possibly Phoenix did not notice the ‘thankfully for me’ addition. She likely was unaware that Tae was not allowed to enter certain places since it had not come up yet. Police stations and hospitals were two such locations… although there were ways to override this rule, neither Tae or Phoenix knew them.
“Either I will be able to find a parking structure with the symbol on it and lots of traffic, or I will find a set of cameras that are mysteriously covered by paint or the like. Either way, I’m confident that I can do it if given some time. An hour should be more than enough time for me to find an active location and then we just need to budget enough time into our schedule to actually get there.” Phoenix was right about the number of delays they were going to run into. The hacking was just one more problem to add to the list of delays he had already mentioned. “I don’t think that it will take all night, however I still say that we start and finish my repairs as soon as possible. I dislike not being at my prime… I won’t be able to protect you should something happen.”
“Honestly, Phoenix, don’t worry about me. I’m likely more committed to these bot fights than you are. I’d happily get ripped into a hundred pieces if it meant that you had nothing more to worry about… surely you know that by now? If anything, you demand so little of me that it’s a bit frustrating. It may not be necessary for me to function, but I enjoy taking orders because that means I’m helping! ” Tae paused to see if his words were getting into Phoenix's brain, but after a moment he continued on despite not seeing much change. “If anything, I say that four should be our minimum no matter what. Due to the expensive repair parts we are purchasing, the money from one fight will be making up for that. If we are to continue this upward spiral of profit then our profits must be far above what we put into them.”
Tae raised his eyebrows when Phoenix started her statement, ready as always to respond to her every wish or word. Her question though was not something he could answer factually or completely, but that did not mean he would not do his best. “Well, why would I want to go back to my creator? It’s as you said, I have memories with you and not with him. Aren’t memories important? Lives are changed based on how people remember certain events; men are arrested because they were picked out of a lineup based solely on a passerby's imperfect memory; married couples get divorced because one party saw the other being too friendly with someone else from across the street; and strangers decide to speak to each other simply because they have seen their face elsewhere. I may not be the same as humans, but my memories are important to me. Dancing at your club is a wonderful memory, and the memory of your pained face when I defended you against that man is something I do not want to forget… if I did, I may repeat my actions.”
Shaking his head, Tae refused his attention to Phoenix and the core of her question. He would never lose that part of him that loved to go on and on with his explanations. “The point is, my memories of you are what make me want to stay. I don’ t know who my creator is and I don’t care because I don’t know him. He’s a stranger to me while you are the single human being on this planet I never want to go a day without seeing. And as long as I can help make your life better, I don’t care about being in complete working order. A humans life is not ruined just because they are flawed; for example, a blind man can still live a perfectly happy life even though he cannot see. So why can’t I be happy with you even though I will never be 100% in perfect condition like I used to be?”
“As for the ‘giving you anything back’ comment…” Tae lightly chuckled, thinking about how many times he told Phoenix that he needed and wanted nothing. He was a PET, a tool, and even with emotions this fact was not completely changing. “I’m not looking for anything besides a place by your side, out of the rain and with electricity. I have these things, and that’s why I feel so happy with you. You're all I’ve ever wanted and more.”
If anyone heard this conversation then they would think that Tae was declaring his everlasting love for Phoenix… and they would be right. A number of these phrases sounded like they were ripped right out of a cheesy romantic drama but that did not change that Tae was telling the truth. He meant every word, and unlike Phoenix, he displayed no shame or shyness when talking about it. Why would he? Emotions or not he was not a human and so suffered from none of their insecurities and society expectations. Plus, ever since Lai.pro was installed Tae thought about Phoenix more as a partner than as his mistress, and the definition of partner in this context is varied. It was partly about them working together to complete a task, but to Tae he couldn't help but look at Phoenix as a romantic partner way as well. The dramatic increase in physical contact was proof of this. Lai.pro changed the way Tae saw the world, and that included his relationship with Phoenix and the way he felt about her.
When Tae finished his speech he suddenly leaned down and forward, bringing his face close to Phoenix. Instead of moving in for a kiss, as someone may have thought he was going to, Tae stopped a few inches away and narrowed his electric blue eyes. “Your face is red again,” Tae plainly stated. “It turned this shade yesterday too… I had thought it was just embarrassment before so I did not mention it but now it’s happening again… Are you coming down with a cold or something? When your body warms up too much the face turns red; it’s a fairly common symptom for those with a fever. Let me take your temperature.”
One moment Tae was shamelessly confessing his feelings and the next he was being a mother hen who still, despite Lai.pro, did not immediately understand that some people were less comfortable with intimacy both physically and verbally. As Phoenix had learned at the beginning of their interactions, Tae had no issues with such things and would have no problem walking around naked in front of a crowd if he was asked to do it. This time it was far more common of a interaction but he still showed no signs of being uncomfortable with intimacy.
Without moving his face away, Tae brought up one of his damaged hands and placed the back of his hand against Phoenix's forehead. Although his limbs had no heat (unlike his chest which was often incredibly warm), he was capable of taking temperature like a thermometer. “It would be far more accurate to use your mouth but since you are eating I don’t think that would be sanitary.” Meaning that if she were not, Tae may have asked to put his hand in her mouth for a more precise reading of her temperature. “Just hold still for a moment while my hand registers your heat, please.”
Tae was concerned, that much was clear. But apparently he was not going to leave his concern at just taking her temperature. “I hope you understand that if you are sick then you won’t be able to go to the ring with us. It’s getting cold out and those places are full of dust, disease, and people who may be sick themselves. That’s also ignoring all of the toxic fumes the machines are putting off as well as the drugs the people are using there.” Tae started out talking at a normal speed but gradually his tempo was increasing. His concern was quickly turning into a display of over protection. “I assume you’ve been washing your hands regularly? You didn't do it before eating the leftovers, which I thought would be fine but maybe I need to be more cautious with your health… Honestly, I’ve been respecting your privacy and not looking too deep into your medical records but perhaps I should do so more thoroughly? A fever is oftentimes a sign that something else is wrong in the body. Sometimes the first signs of a serious illness is a fever and the face turning red. Maybe I should pick up some-”
Tae stopped. Biting his bottom lip, Tae blinked a few times before drawing his face and hand away. “Um,” was how he started. If he could blush, Tae probably would have been considering that he nearly had a panic attack over Phoenix's health. He had been so certain that she was in danger, that she was at risk because of a possible fever. Even though his logic had caught up to him, Tae still could not push away the thought that he needed to keep an eye out for any signs of illness. “Well, that was embarrassing… forgive me for that.. Your temperature was perfectly normal, your face is just a bit flushed which is arguably normal as well. I guess I really don’t like thinking about you being sick... But I don’t need to tell you that! I think my protectiveness is pretty clear now!” Tae laughed, but it was more to ease the tension he was feeling than humor. “Like I said before, you are the single human being on this planet I never want to go a day without seeing so you getting sick and ending up in the hospital is not acceptable to me. Still, I overreacted a bit, didn't I? Apologies...”
Strangely, Phoenix felt a little guilty when Tae light-heartedly chastised her for ‘stealing’ jobs from him. “Ah, well… I mean, I’m capable, too,” she said, a little lamely. Even though she had (somehow) gotten used to having one of the world’s most advanced pieces of technology sitting in her crappy apartment, she hadn’t adjusted to letting him everything for her. It had been a long, long time since she relied on anyone but herself – especially when it came to little, insignificant things like microwaving food. It just didn’t feel natural or right to let Tae do things she was perfectly able to do herself. But at the same time, she supposed she didn’t want him to feel terrible, and certainly not after everything he’d done for her. “I’ll try to let you do a bit more for me,” she added, laughing a little. At the very least, he was pleased with her for agreeing to their financial game plan. But then again, why did she care so much about how he felt? It wasn’t normal to be concerned for the well-being of a machine, was it?
It was a bit of a nagging question that had been floating around the back of her mind for a while, occasionally resurfacing for brief moments before she suppressed it again. Thanks to Tae’s uncannily human appearance, it had been natural to treat him like a person. Or at least, give him some basic level of respect. And now that he had Lai.Pro installed, the compulsion for felt was even stronger. Because, of course, his resemblance to any other human was even stronger, too. But was this the right thing to do? Treating him like something he wasn’t? Phoenix certainly didn’t mean to abuse him, but thinking of him as if he were just some machine wasn’t quite right. However, at the same time, even Tae himself wanted to be utilized as intended.
… It was all very confusing, and all very much beyond what she was capable of thinking about right now. Perhaps after all was said and done she’d revisit the matter, but currently Phoenix had much bigger problems to worry about than philosophy.
So as Tae reported his findings on the symbol, Phoenix took the opportunity to refocus herself and, in turn, shove her unaddressed dilemmas back to where they had come from. “Hm… once we get you fixed up and walking like a normal human again, I'm sure we could arrange that pretty easily.” She nodded slowly, considering the logistics for a moment. There was a police station not too far away, so that would at least cut down on travel time. And if they didn’t have to go in the building or anything, they could just sit in a car nearby while Tae did his thing. If they did that once they had their other preparations complete, they could go right to the place and get rolling. While time was of the essence, an hour to find a location – perhaps even less, that was always a possibility – was doable. “Anyway, hopefully Rhys comes back soon with some parts and start on the repairs sooner rather than later. While I don't think you need to protect me from anything right now, I can't say I'm a big fan of waiting around doing nothing either." Time was ticking, after all.
They moved along to the next topic, at which point Phoenix was chastised a little again. A small frown came upon her face as Tae spoke, proudly proclaiming he'd be happy to get ripped to shreds if it helped her. As he expressed his frustration, the woman felt a small pang of guilt again. It wasn't like her to ask for help, let alone order someone to do something for her. The thought made her uncomfortable, but perhaps it was because no one had ever been so eager to help her out? The rubbed the side of her neck, a bit uncomfortable with these unexpected feelings, but evidently her poker face was strong enough for the android to keep going. Thankfully, things went back to the matter of bot fighting, at which point Tae expressed his opinion on how many they should do. "Four at least... okay. Again, as long as you're all right with it, then so am I." She looked up and nodded. "And... I'll try to ask you for a bit more. If it makes you happy for me to do so." Clearing her throat, she looked down at her food. It felt like a very strange thing to say as well, but there was no taking back the words now, was there?
Another thing she couldn't take back was her question. Phoenix awaited Tae's answer silently, her attention focused on him. Oddly enough, she felt a bit of anticipation in her chest, curious as to what his answer might be. His response was quite human, though she wasn't sure if she should be surprised about this or not, given how his behaviour and way of thinking had changed since Lai.Pro was activated. As she listened, Phoenix nodded slowly. While it sounded like a fairly emotional answer, it made a lot of sense. She supposed that she was all he really new - this faceless, nameless creator was little more than a mere concept. But for the moment, she simply said, quietly, "I see." Tae continued to speak, elaborating further on his perspective. He said almost precisely what she had been thinking, but before she could appreciate this unspoken understanding, she felt her heart race a little bit in her chest. Her fingers curled on the counter as the corners of her lips tightened in a tiny, barely detectable frown.
The words that were coming out of his mouth sounded more romantic than she sure he intended. For a split second she wondered whether Tae got his speech from some romantic drama or novel, but the specific nature of his message was much too personal to be. By the time he had finished, telling her that she was all he'd ever wanted, Phoenix was acutely aware of the warmth in her face. "Huh... I... I see." Her eyes, which had wandered up to look at Tae, fell back to the counter. Men had said such things to her before, but it clearly wasn't the same. Human men spouted sweet nothings to get something from her in return; but this wasn't the case. It couldn't be. Lai.Pro may have bestowed feelings upon the robot, but it certainly could not have given any of the primal instincts and urges humans were so plagued with. And surely he wasn't saying it to get anything else in return either. Not only did Tae simply seem too pure, and having too much integrity, but he was the one who wanted to give to her - not the other way around.
Long story short, it all seemed genuine and that was much more than what Phoenix expected. To add to her embarrassment, Tae came in close, his face closer to hers than she thought it had ever been. Instinctively she flinched back a little, her cheeks heating up even more than they already had - thanks not only to the sudden proximity of his features, but also the fact that he pointed out how much she was blushing. "I-- I'm fine, really, you don't need to worry!" She turned away, waving her hands dismissively as he mentioned taking her temperature. However, it was not enough to persuade him otherwise and she soon felt the sensation of his cool skin against hers. A jolt ran through her body at his touch, which deepened the scarlet that had bloomed in her face even further. But despite the instinct to move away, Phoenix's feet were stuck to the spot and she froze, unintentionally doing just as she was told.
"Honestly, I'm not sick, Tae," she went on in protest, feeling much like a child at the mercy of their worried mother as he launched into a concern-fueled speech. "Seriously, it's okay..." But he continued, even proposing the notion of going through her medical records in more detail to make sure she was all right.
It was by that point that Phoenix went from flustered to a bit annoyed. That was just too far now - but luckily Tae came to the realization himself. The wrinkle in her brow and the slight narrowing of her eyes eased as he stopped, catching himself before he went even further. As he withdrew his hand, Phoenix relaxed, the colour of her face having mostly returned to normal by then. The woman sighed gently as he apologized, even laughing sheepishly at what he had done. Rubbing the side of her neck, the woman found herself unable to keep a small grin off her face as well. Though he had sparked a tinge of irritation, it had quickly faded and she couldn't help but feel a sense of endearment towards him. "It's fine, I appreciate your concern about me." She felt her heartbeat skip a little in her chest as he repeated she was the most important person to him; however, she managed to keep speaking without pause. "If I ever had any doubt about your protectiveness before, it's sure as hell gone now." A light laugh escaped from her lips. "But you don't need to worry so much, okay? And you especially don't need to see my medical records. I've been taking care of myself for a long time, and I'll go to the doctor or the hospital if I really need to. So try to relax a little."
Here, Phoenix did pause, the silence lingering in the air as she gathered her thoughts. After his heartfelt confession, it just seemed wrong to not say anything in response. What to say though? While she valued Tae as much more than a machine, she couldn't go so far as to say he was the most important person in her life. Not that he would expect her to, but... it just seemed like the kind of sentiment that usually should have been reciprocated. The rather one-sided imbalance of power and affection felt a bit strange - but then again, it seemed like almost everything she had thought and experienced in the last fifteen minutes as just plain weird overall.
Suddenly, before she could come up with a suitable response, she had a realization about something else he had said. "Wait-- you said 'look through my records more thoroughly'? How much did you see?" She hadn't fully processed what he had said, what with all of the embarrassment she had and the general speed at which he had been talking. "And how did you access that, even?" While there wasn't anything terribly private or embarrassing in her files, it still felt like an invasion of privacy. She didn't even think about how he could be capable of that, let alone think that he could read about her.
But just as she spoke, she heard a knock on the door, followed by Rhys' slightly muffled voice. "Hey, I'm back. Y'mind getting the door maybe?"
Phoenix held Tae's gaze for a moment, and then sighed. "You know what, it's fine. After all you've done, I don't mind if you know a thing or two about me like that. I'm sure you had my best interests in mind anyway." She gave him a small smile, her features relaxing again - a simple display that she wasn't mad, and that he shouldn't feel bad. It was her knee jerk reaction to get upset about it, but really, they had bigger fish to fry. Besides, she knew he didn't mean harm anyway.
And so she made her way to the door and opened it up. Rhys promptly shuffled into the apartment, lugging a small trolley with one hand and holding a large box in the other. Over his shoulders was a large backpack, probably with his own belongings inside of it. Quickly, Phoenix took the item from his grasp and set it down nearby with a grunt. "Jeez, that's heavy. I guess these are all the parts, though?"
"Yup, yup." He pushed the rest of the items next to it as Phoenix shut the door. "I got everything we picked out Tae. Took a bit less time than I thought, thanks to a few friends. Though they did get a little curious about what I was doing. Didn't tell 'em anything though, don't worry." Rhys removed his backpack and walked over to the corner, where he set it down with a sigh of relief. The man bent down by his pack and opened it up, producing a few separate rolls of tools. "Anyway, if you're both ready, we can get to repairs anytime. Best not to waste the hours, I'm guessing."
Tae gave a quick, satisfied nod when she finally agreed to let him do more for her. That was exactly what he wanted to hear, and he did not try to hide the fact that he got his way. The grin on his face was enough to express his gloating pleasure but for added affect, Tae had to say something. “Wonderful! It really does make me happy to hear that from you!” And it was true. Nothing felt better than being relied on because that meant that she trusted him and needed him.
The honest, semi romantic confession did not and never would cause any sort of shame or embarrassment in Tae. Lai.pro or not, Tae did not seem to understand what embarrassment was… or at least it was not something that applied to him because he did not ever feel it himself. There should have been no doubt in anyone's mind that if he were told to strip in public or make a public love confession, he would do so without a second thought. Human insecurities were beyond his comprehension.
Although Tae had other things in mind, he did take notice of the way Phoenix’s expression changed when he mentioned going through her records. There was something negative in the way her eyes narrowed at the suggestion. Why though? Privacy was important when it came to how humans interacted with each other, but such a concept should not apply to him. He was her personal computer and servant so it would benefit them both if he memorized every inch of her past records and information. How else could he serve her in matters of economics or health? It was normal for his first moment meeting someone to figure out their criminal record, if they had one, as well as basic things like their finances and employment. All of that could be figured out just by finding their PET number and then following that number across the web.
Due to Rhy’s arrival, Tae was not able to answer the questions about how much he knew or how he knew it. It was a shame though since it seemed like something Phoenix cared about, but she did just give her consent on the matter. It would be fine, and if she cared enough she would ask again in the future. Still, Tae was glad that she was not mad at him. That was the last thing he wanted. Well, actually it wasn't. The last thing he wanted to Phoenix dead. Better she hate him, throw him out, or destroy him over her life ending.
Once seeing the trolley and the heavy box, Tae immediately moved to assist, but due to his slow movements he was unable to get there in time to be of use. Tae immediately was flooded with a rush of annoyance, and more than that, a sense of uselessness so strong his eyes flashed blue for just a millisecond. It likely was not even noticeable unless someone was looking at his narrowed eyes within that moment. He needed to be repaired before one of his humans hurt themselves carrying items too much for their fleshy, easily ripped muscles. Their entire species were so pathetically weak that it was a miracle they survived without his assistance.
With a bit of a jolt, Tae pushed a grin on his face in order to mask the path his mind was taking. It was wrong to think of his masters in such a way, true or not. Despite the smiles, laughter, and excited tone Tae displayed, inside of his casing there was a constant buzz of worthlessness. Humans were worthless without him, and he was more useless than them at the moment which was even worse.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After several hours of hard work for everyone involved, Tae was back to normal. In fact, he was stronger than ever before. Well, he was likely in better condition before the whole dumpster incident, but Tae was in the best condition he has been since he met Phoenix. He could already tell that his hands were stronger, far more fit to punch without bending, and his legs were stronger as well. Well, at least when it came to the casing and the likelihood of breaking again.

Things were not perfect though. Sure, his body could take a better beating than ever before but his interior joints were weaker. There were not parts on the market to repair those "tissues" which meant that they had to say weak. It would not inhibit his movement, but time would be a problem. Eventually those joints would wear away until they could not move at all, or worse, they would not hold Tae’s weight at all. Plus, the joints that were in danger of decay were also key to how he fought. A targeted shot to that part of his leg, through that particular metal joint, and Tae would not be able to use that leg at all. No jumping, no kicking, and no dodging. All would crumble away once that point was reached.

A less serious problem was his skin, but it was a problem. There were no human skins on the market for sale. Human PETs were a myth; the only PETs that looked humanoid were skinless and still sounded and moved robotic. There were scales and furs one could buy, but that would just look strange so Tae rejected those for aesthetic reasons. Any part of his body that needed repairing was now stripped of skin completely. Truly, his face was the only part of his body still 100% covered.

Still, Tae was pleased. The negative thoughts from earlier vanished as his mobility returned. “There we are! Much better!” Tae gleefully mused, twirling in place like he was never broken at all. He was back to normal… well, as close to normal as he had come to know. “Thank you both! I’ll be sure to put these parts to good use tonight.” He would rather die than not.

“Shall we get moving then?” Tae asked, suddenly stopping his spinning without a single sign of dizziness. It made sense that Tae was not effected, but that didn't change the fact that it could be seen as strange that someone could stop so suddenly with no downsides. “The nearest police station is a few miles away and there was an accident on the roads so everything is backed up a bit. We should get going now and perhaps stop for a bite to eat before stopping at the ring if time allows. Sound like a plan?” This, of course, was just a suggestion. Tae would never dream of taking the reigns fully unless he was given permission to do so.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It took some time to collect everything they would need such as some spare parts they had laying around, Phoenix's Nyx disguise, and, of course, wads of cash they would need for betting. Thankfully part of Rhy’s shopping list included a few more sets of clothing for Tae to wear so he was able to wear something that would at least start out clean and not ripped. They kept with the dark clothing, which was partially Tae’s preference and because it simply looked better on him.
“This should do it, you can pull over and I’m just going to get out of the car to reduce interference,” Tae said when the trio finally made it a few building away from the local police station. It wasn't a high scale joint, or at least it was not large. At most there were probably a dozen cells inside there, but this station in particular was not meant to be a permanent place to keep prisoners. It was meant for drunk people who needed the night to calm down or for medium to low level prisoners to send a few days while they waited for transfer to a larger prison on the outskirts of town. Thankfully, although the human part of the station was not very impressive, it’s computer and cameras were the same as any large scale operation. It would have what they needed.
“This won’t take long, I hope,” Tae said as he climbed out of the vehicle, not waiting for permission or inviting the others to join him. That beings said, he was not going to stop them from coming if they wanted to; it would simply not be wise for them to follow him when he was about to commit a mortal crime. Sure, no one was around to catch them presently, but that did not mean that someone would not show up.
With Tae’s long, newly repaired legs, he quickly walked the distance from where Rhys parked and the police station. However, just before Tae set foot on the sidewalk in front of the building, he froze mid action. For a moment Tae stayed in that position before quickly crossing the street until he was at the point perfectly perpendicular to the station. Physically it was not clear why Tae did this. Why go across the street when nothing was stopping him from standing on the sidewalk of the station or even standing directly on the premises? All he was doing was greatly increasing the distance and therefore decreasing the strength of his wireless connection. All evidence pointed towards his actions being unwise.
Mentally though, Tae’s actions made perfect sense. His entire system was flashing red. “Do not enter the premises” his warning system practically screamed at him. He was not allowed in the police station or the area surrounding it. He would not go in there no matter what. Tae comprehended this warning while he stared from this spot across the street. It was odd, but at the same time, not surprising. He was not allowed in hospitals either which seemed to imply that his interior programming was designed to keep him out of places where professionals could identify that he was not human. It made sense… but that didn't stop the fact that it was uncomfortable to feel so many warnings going off at the same time.
While Tae waited for the warnings to calm down, he started playing with his hair. Well, not playing, he had a purpose in his actions. Due to his perfectly silky black hair that fell down past his ears, that meant that he had a way to hide his eyes. Normally he made a point to keep the hair out of his eyes and styled, but at that moment he he purposely making it messy. Due to his dark clothing and now the way the hair was hanging over his eyes, he looked stereotypically goth. Being unprofessional was a small price to pay in comparison to showing anyone who passed by that he was not human.
Once the warnings subsided, Tae blinked a few times and then fixed his gaze on the station. From that moment on Tae did not blink, and his eyes emitted a constant, neon blue light. His unnatural hair managed to block out a fair bit of the neon light, but whenever there was a small breeze you would get a flash of color.
The hacking program started after a few moments, not as quickly as last time, but he managed to grab onto the police stations wireless data cloud despite the slowness. Once he found it, it was only a waiting game. For 15 minutes Tae did not blink or flinch, he just stood like a statue a few inches away from the edge of the road. Cars drove by during this time, but Tae did not flinch even when they seemed to be swerving in his direction. Then, once he broke through the semi-complex security system, Tae stood there for another 15 minutes while he looked across the city for what he was looking for. This process was fairly slower than it was the last time Tae hacked into security measures; this could have been because of Lai.pro being installed or because they were dealing with the police instead of just some random business. Either way, this was notably slow.
Although Tae was standing on the street, he was not seeing it anymore. His mind was elsewhere. His eyes were no longer in his metal skull and instead replaced by the countless camera’s across the city. He saw many parking structures, but none with the wired octopus art sprayed onto the sides. There was not abnormal amount of people in any of the structures either. The populated structures were close to clubs or other late night entertainments, which were automatically too public of locations to host a bot fight. At the 14.36 mark, Tae was starting to think that it was hopeless.
That is, at least, until he came across a fully operational camera that was only displaying black, but black that was not solid and instead semi speckled. And sure enough, when Tae rewound the recording he saw an obvious man enter the camera’s field of view with a spray can in hand and a cartoon octopus mask that was likely bought at one of the nearby costume shops. There it was, that nights bot fighting ring.
It took a few minutes to separate Tae’s consciousness back into one mind and body, but once he did all animation returned to Tae. He started to pretend to breath again, he began to blink, and his hands reached up to fix his messy hair. “East Oakwood street,” Tae said aloud, not even fully aware if people were around him or not.
The hours were not wasted.
As soon as Rhys’ supplies were set up, they got to work. It took great focus and concentration from the humans’ part, but luckily for them they ran into almost no problems along the way. That was the great thing about fixing Tae – he was sentient, and knew himself better than they probably ever would. Since Rhys and Phoenix had enough technical skills between them to perform the repairs, all they really had to do was listen to Tae’s directions. Still, he was a complex machine and the fixes they needed weren’t necessarily simple or straightforward. It took several hours of constant work before they could finally say that they were finished.
Phoenix sat back on her couch and heaved a sigh while Rhys stood up from the floor and rubbed his neck. “Well, that should be good for now,” he said, looking at the android between them. Tae actually looked better than ever before. Of course, he wasn’t in the condition he was truly meant to be in, but this was probably as good as it would get right now. His exterior was sturdier and could handle more damage than he previously could. However, as per Tae his ‘insides’ were not as strong, and were actually weaker than they had been. That was a bit of a problem, but there was literally nothing they could do about it. Even though Rhys had his sources, there were limits to what he could get. And what Tae needed to get back to perfect condition was worlds beyond his reach.
His synthetic skin was one of these things, but that was a minor detail in the end. In any case, Tae seemed more than happy with the repairs, and that was good enough for both Rhys and Phoenix. The woman watched him as he spun around like an excited child and laughed quietly. “Glad you’re feeling yourself again.” After the words left her mouth she paused, again catching herself saying something that was just weird to tell a robot. But she didn’t linger on the thought for more than a moment. It still felt strange, but it was nothing to dwell on. Nothing was normal anymore.
At that point, Tae was ready to go. He reported there was an accident nearby that was slowing things down, and then proposed a quick plan for the rest of their evening. Phoenix stood up again and nodded, ignoring her body’s pleas to sit and rest a little longer. “Yeah, sounds good. I think we’ll have time to get a burger or something quick.” She rolled her shoulder as she ventured over to her dresser to fish out some clothes for the night. “I’ll get myself ready if you can gather the technical stuff, Rhys,” the woman said as she collected a few pieces of clothing and cosmetics in her arms.
“’Course,” Rhys said with a little nod. With all that said and done Phoenix made her way to the bathroom to prepare while her friend began to sort through the rest of the items, putting aside anything they might need to bring with them.
*~*~*~*
It was strange how quickly she’d gotten used to wearing a disguise. The wig didn’t feel so uncomfortable anymore, and even calling herself a different name felt more natural today. But seeing a different reflection – that was still a bit of an adjustment.
Phoenix flipped the mirror back up and replaced the makeup in her bag. She sat in the front seat of Rhys’ car, which was stocked with everything they would need for tonight’s venture. Tae sat in the back and eventually let Rhys know when it was a good spot to pull over. With a quick nod of acknowledgement he did as requested, and turned the engine off. The police station was nearby but they had stopped outside a small shop a few doors down. It wasn’t a terribly busy time of the night, so there was no one walking around – at least on their side of the street. A few couples strolled on the sidewalk across from them, but none of them looked their way.
At that point Tae started to get out of the car to, well, do his thing. “Be careful,” Phoenix said, a small wrinkle forming on her brow as her robotic companion hopped out and shut the door behind him. For a moment she watched him walk away, her eyes following him as he approached the police station. But then, strangely, he seemed to freeze before abruptly crossing over to the other side of the road. “That was… kinda odd…” she murmured, looking to Rhys to see if he had any insight.
But the man didn’t and simply shrugged a shoulder. “Yeah…” was all he said before silence fell over the pair again. It wasn’t a big deal, really – they could ask Tae when he got back in the car – so they simply watched. While neither of them had discussed it aloud, they had individually decided to just stay back and watch. It would look way more suspicious if they were to all go out there, do nothing of significance, and hop back in their car. Thus the two remained where they sat and observed Tae’s next actions.
He stood there, preening his hair casually. Seeming as though he were waiting for someone. In a bit of an odd spot, but… well, there were a lot of unusual people in these parts so Phoenix figured they could pass it off as that. Then, after a few moments his eyes began to emanate blue light. She felt a small twang of unease, but kept her breath steady and herself calm. It wasn’t unnoticeable, but it wasn’t obvious either; if someone wasn’t staring intently at Tae, they probably wouldn’t catch it.
However, the more time passed the more Phoenix began to worry. While she didn’t expect this thing to happen instantly, it was a bit unnerving not to have some kind of ETA. “When should we bring him back in?” she asked, glancing away from Tae to meet Rhys’ gaze. While he’d gotten a few looks from passersby, no one seemed terribly concerned with him. An officer had even left the station but seemed to ignore him completely. But… it was only a matter of time before he’d draw attention from someone else inside.
“Eventually,” Rhys agreed, glancing at the clock. “But let’s give him a bit longer. It’s only been ten minutes.”
With a quiet hum Phoenix sat back and continued to wait. After another five minutes passed she said, “No more than another ten or so. The last thing we need is for a cop to come bother him.” They were idling for quite some time in this paid parking zone as well.
Thankfully, it didn’t take quite that long. After a few more minutes Tae seemed to snap out of his trance-like state, breathing and blinking and fixing his hair again. Phoenix saw his mouth move, as if he were talking to himself, and eventually he made his way back into the backseat of their car, where he reported the location they needed to go to. “East Oakwood,” Rhys echoed, taking a moment to mentally figure out where that was. “All right, I know how to get there. Might be twenty minutes or so from here. Not too bad – I think we can even get some food on the way.” Grinning, he buckled his seat belt before starting the car and pulling back out onto the road.
*~*~*~*
As one might expect, it took a bit of searching before they found the place Tae had seen. It was a multi-level parking lot, much like many around the city - and at first glance Phoenix wondered if they had somehow been mistaken. But she and Rhys trusted the android's intel and found a parking spot within it nevertheless, sure that this truly was the place. When they got out of the car they searched around, particularly looking for the image the android had seen on the surveillance feed. After a bit of wandering around the lot they found the logo spray painted on the side of a pillar, fairly well hidden from view.
"Right, so since I don't hear much up top, there must be something going on down below..." Rhys touched his chin and looked around as Phoenix studied the logo a bit closer for a minute. According to her friend this ring was called Octaryon and - as Tae had mentioned - it had much better support than the one they had gone to last night. While its operations were quite secretive and lowkey, it was relatively well known within bot fighting enthusiasts and participants. However, actually getting to a fight hosted by this group was a different thing. Apparently, fighters generally had to be invited through word of mouth by one of the ring's regulars or organizers, and not just anyone was welcomed in. Only those who have had success in lower rings, or who had an otherwise interesting PET or fighting style were generally given access. And even then, the invites were not always straightforward either. If someone felt you had to 'prove' yourself, they would give you a sort of riddle that would reveal the next location rather than telling you directly. Even when you got there, word was that there was some stipulation or obstacle around actually fighting - though Rhys didn't know what that was. Everything he knew was considered 'basic' knowledge about Octaryon, and as he didn't know anyone directly involved he was as clueless as Phoenix.
Frankly, hearing about all these crazy rules and measures to preserve exclusivity made her wonder if they would have problems getting in. But as Phoenix looked from the logo back to Tae, she felt some of her doubt wash away. Surely once they proved he was not human, they'd be intrigued enough to let them in... right? Just like yesterday?
Well, she had to hope so anyway. Shaking the thought off, Phoenix followed Rhys as he head towards one of the stairwells nearby. There was a large sign posted on the door, as well as a few strips of caution tape running across it. The woman stopped next to her friend, and joined him in reading what the paper said: 'BASEMENT LEVEL CLOSED FOR MAINTENANCE. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.' It looked to be an ordinary warning sign, just like any others one would find around the city; however, in the corner of this one there was that same octopus logo drawn in the corner. After catching sight of the small graphic she looked to Rhys, who met her gaze as well. With a small nod, she opened the door and stepped through, careful to duck under the tape and preserve the guise that had been set up.
Rhys followed behind Tae as they went down the stairs towards the bottom level. Phoenix could hear the faint sounds of clanging and voices, and it really did sound like people doing construction - but at this point she knew better. Soon they came down to the basement of the parking garage only to be faced by a large, bulky construction worker. He straightened up a little as their footsteps drew near and folded his arms disapprovingly once the group stopped in front of him. The man was silent for a moment, obviously taking a second to silently screen them before he spoke. "Maybe you guys missed the sign but this area's closed off for construction." His eyes shifted between them until he stopped to look at Tae, where his gaze lingered. "I'm going to have to ask you guys to turn back."
Phoenix paused before speaking. "We're here for Octaryon." To be honest she wasn't sure the best way to approach this, but she figured mentioning the ring was probably not a bad idea.
"Octaryon?" The guard arched an eyebrow at her, and there was a short silence again before he went on. "... And who are you?"
"Nyx. This is my assistant and my bot." Phoenix motioned to Rhys and Tae as she introduced them, making a conscious effort to maintain an air of calm confidence. We belong here, she told herself.
But her answer elicited a short chuckle. "Doesn't ring a bell. Even if it did, cosplayers don't count as bots." His posture eased, his arms unfurling as he shook his head. "So you all should be on your way now."
Would they have to do this every time? Phoenix suppressed a sigh and kept her eyes locked on the guard. "Tae, show this gentleman you're not playing dress-up." She gave the order plainly, without looking at him, and waited until displayed some obvious proof he wasn't human, just like before.
And again, just like the last night, their spectator was taken aback. The Octaryon bouncer looked at Tae with widened eyes, his mouth hanging slightly agape for a second before he regained his composure. Clearing his throat, he reached to a walkie-talkie at his side and spoke into it. "Hey, I'm sending a newbie in. You need to make the call here."
After a small crackle of static a woman's voice responded with a short, simple acknowledgement, "All right." With that, the man stepped aside for them to walk through. Phoenix opened the door and passed by him into the underground level of the garage. By itself it was indeed a normal parking lot - lines and pillars and all. But there was not a single car in sight - only people and PETs. It was immediately apparent that Octaryon was much more organized compared to yesterday's ring as well. This place almost seemed sterile compared to the noise and chaos she'd experience the previous night, as it seemed they only had what they absolutely needed to. There were large areas marked off for the fights themselves, and they were all off on one half of the garage. Towards the back wall was the maintenance area, where all of the night's combatants were being tended to by their masters in preparation for the main event. As for the space directly in front of them, it had been clearly designated as a reception. Metal barricades were set up, barring the area directly in front of the stairwell from everything else. There was only a small space without fences, and that was occupied by a simple, but hefty metal table - and there was nothing more. To welcome them, there was a man with a stack of papers and a clipboard, as well as a woman who stood when they entered. Beside them were two more large men, also costumed as construction workers - extra bouncers, apparently.
Phoenix paid them no mind, however, and focused on the woman who made her way towards them, her walkie-talkie bouncing on her hip. She was middle-aged, garbed in a well-fitted pantsuit and wore her dark blonde hair pulled into a tight, tidy bun. Her heels clicked on the concrete as she walked around the table and stood in front of them. Bright blue eyes studied the three of them carefully, her gaze held on Tae a few seconds longer before she looked to Phoenix again. "You're going to tell me this is a PET, aren't you." The woman pointed at Tae, her dark red nail polish glimmering dully under the harsh fluorescent lighting.
"I'll show you instead." Phoenix was grateful that this woman was perceptive enough to make her own deductions bout their situation, but gave Tae the order to demonstrate his inhumanity again.
When he was finished, the woman's red lips curled into a smile. "Well. This should make things interesting." With a nod she turned and resumed her position next to the man with the clipboard, though she stood instead of taking her seat. "All right. You're in." She tapped on the table next to the clipboard and said, "Register them."
Her apparent underling nodded and pushed up his glasses as he looked to Phoenix. "Your name?"
“I wonder why they chose this symbol. Wire-like tentacles or not, an octopus has nothing to do with bot fighting,” Tae casually commented when they first found the symbol on the pillar. He knew that he would very soon have to feign being emotionless so he had to chatty while he still could. Phoenix had also been looking closely at the Octaryon symbol, so it made sense that Tae would try to start a conversation about a thing she appeared interested in. “It doesn't have anything to do with excess security or riddles either. Perhaps a dragon would have been a better option… or maybe a sphinx?”
Unlike Phoenix and Rhys, Tae felt no concern over whether they would be let in or not. Tae’s creation alone would be enough to get them through the doors and into the games no matter if they were newcomers or not. No ring would turn them away no matter how exclusive of the club. And if they did not let them in? Well, Tae could either force his way past whoever was in the way or he could threaten to call the cops. He likely would not call the cops though, even if they refused his entry, because that would make him and Phoenix a hated member of the bot fighting ring. They likely would never be able to get inside of a bot fighting ring ever again. Plus, Tae did not want to interact with the cops any more than needed. He had called the cops the night he beat that man in the alleyway, but that was a minute long conversation with a voice changer. If Tae called the cops over the bot fighting ring then they would likely demand a face to face meeting or at least feel more of a need to follow up on their information dealer.
Shaking this thought out of his mind, Tae realized that no matter what he would not even mention the police. It was too risky for his own well being. Even just thinking about calling the cops were sending off minor warning bells in his brain.
Once they reached the stairway and saw the sign, Tae let his words, expressions, and physical mannerism fade away. It was back to being, or at least pretending to be, a mindless PET. Getting under the security tape was a bit of a challenge for Tae due to his great height and long limbs, but he managed to crunch himself down into a small enough to make it happen.
Tae had no choice but to take a background role as Rhys and Phoenix dealt with the guard, but Tae did not stop himself from positioning his thin but tall frame closely behind Phoenix. If the man looked at her, he would have no choice but to see Tae’s dark form as well. Thankfully sticking close to your master was a common PET trait, so his actions would still make sense with his lie.
When given the order to prove that he was not ‘playing dress-up,’ Tae blinked his eyes and allowed himself to create a slightly blue tinted projection of the bodyguard. It was a recording, from Tae’s perspective, of the guard saying “Doesn't ring a bell. Even if it did, cosplayers don’t count as bots” before the video was paused although it was not hard to guess that Tae could have kept projecting his recordings of their entire conversation. His eye tricks were the fanciest and obvious inhuman traits that he had so they were quickly becoming Tae’s go to proof of his PET status.
Thankfully the man let the group through, and Tae felt a wave of relief settle over him the moment he saw where they would be spending their night. “This is preferable,” Tae muttered before he could stop himself. It was just too nice to have a more organized, neat place to fight instead of the warehouse from last night. Even the woman they were forced to deal with was preferable to the greedy, rude man that run the other ring. Soon enough they would be working with actual professionals and not just common people who had the skill set to one day be professionals.
When ordered to, Tae used his eyes just like he did with the guard. A projection replaying the last few seconds of the group's interactions, all through Tae’s eyes of course. And once again, it worked.
After being registered, the man running the station gave Phoenix and Rhys a rundown on how Octaryon worked. He obviously knew that they were new to this particular ring and was taking pity on them… or maybe he just wanted to see Tae fight without any delays that may happen due to confusion or Phoenix not being where she needed to be at the right time.
The registration process was highly similar to the other fighting ring, but this one had a few key differences. First of all, there was one price for all. You paid at the door to be put down for a fight and that was it. Whether you ended up fighting one battle or half a dozen, there were no refunds or surprise costs. The fact that there was a range of fights you would participate in had to do with the second key difference. Instead of the free for all where you paid for each fight and profited off of bets, this place made you pay to have your name added to a list which would eventually be turned into tournament organized through a randomized bracket system. If you won your first fight then you passed and were allowed to fight the winner of another bracket; if you lost, then you could go home or watch the rest of the fights but either way, there was no chance to win. Even the betting was a one for all deal where you bet on someone before the fights went down and your winnings depended on how far the PET got. The third most important change was that profits were not based on how many bets with or against you but more so on how high in the bracket you got. If you lost your first fight then you got nothing, you lost money; if you lost the second round then you more or less broke even; and it was only when you won the third round that you started to make profits.
Tae paid attention to these rules, but at the end of the lesson, he found these changes rather unimportant on the larger scale. Sure, it was more organized and therefore preferable, but from his end of things he was still just fighting. Only this time he would have a chance to watch some of his possible competitor's fight before getting into the ring with them. He would know some of what he was getting into.
The bracket for the night, or at least the one Tae was fighting in, was not completely filled just yet so the trio of newbies had to sit around and wait. The only people fighting in the ring that night were those in a different bracket than Tae so watching them was not exactly helpful, but it was at least some stimulation. It wasn't like Tae had other options since he was not supposed to be talking or really reacting to anything. So instead of talking to Phoenix or Rhys, Tae just started at the combatants without a blink or twitch for the boring half hour of waiting.
It turned out that they were watching the end of the previous bracket, the championship. It was between a lynx PET and, surprisingly, a normal sized beaver PET that was winning due to its sharp fangs and tail that could crush metal with ease. And, in the end, the beaver won along with its master who was some obese boy with teeth reminiscent of his PET. Once the money was handed out, a brief “intermission” occurred where the new bracket’s participants were called together to find out who they were randomly placed against for the initial fights.
Tae and Phoenix gathered within the group where they got the first look at their competitors. Once again, it was a wide range of people participating and very few of them had their PETs visible. They were trying to keep their fighters secret until the last possible moment. However, from the few PETs that were visible, it seemed like the bulk of them were animal PET users; it made sense to economically and functionally to change a pre-existing, functional model into a fighter rather than build a robot completely from scratch. Unlike the warehouse, the competitors here tended to be around 23 or older; no teenagers or super old men just playing around anymore.
In a voice, loud and clear, the man with the same focus as the woman who ran this entire joint began reading off the names of the first round fighters from the projection put off by his ferret PET. “Group A- Marcus versus Lupus! Group B- Chrysos versus Gabriella! Group C- Tami versus Desire! Group D- Seth versus Nyx! Fights will occur simultaneously at the two rings we have set up. A and B will be at the ring closer to the entrance and C and D fights will occur in the ring located on the opposite end of the lot. If you are late to the fight we will take that as a surrender and you will get nothing no matter what round you make it to, so I recommend that you stick close to the rings I just mentioned because you never know how fast a fight will go. The first round of fights will start in 15 minutes, but I’ll be around here until then so if you have any questions, ask them quick!”
Just as quickly as everyone gathered to hear the news, the competitors started to disperse and head off to their designated rings. Or at least it seemed so until a someone bumped into Phoenix from behind with enough force that she likely stumbled. Tae’s reaction to reach for Phoenix and stop her from falling was immediate, and so was the loud exclamation that quickly came from the clumsy stranger. “Oh, sorry about that!”
Slowly stumbling away from Phoenix with his hands in the air, the stranger gave a small crooked smile and quickly flicked his eyes between Phoenix, Rhys, and Tae. The boy was mostly unremarkable, just about as tall as Rhys with shaggy blonde hair, thick-rimmed glasses that were clearly a strong prescription, and a hunched over posture. What was remarkable though was the dress shirt and tie slightly visible under his sweatshirt; the sweatshirt was vibrant with a golden knight’s helmet detailed on the front. The words “Kolbert’s Institute of Technology- Class of 2021” circled the helm, identifying this stranger as a student at the local graduate university famous for producing engineers, inventors, PET developers, and many other respectable technological professions. It was a highly picky and expensive school too, only 5% of applicants were accepted into the graduate program.
“Hey, I know you…. I saw you at the warehouse yesterday, didn’t I? I never thought I’d run into you guys again. It’s Nyx, Tae, and…. Well, I have no idea who you are,” the stranger admitted, slowly pointing at the person he was naming until hesitating on Rhys. This didn't hold the stranger up long though, he quickly moved on to other matters. “Fancy PET, Nyx. VERY impressive; I’ve never seen one even close to the quality or with such realistic details. I’d love to pop him open and rummage around his insides one day. You know, to see what’s going on in there.”
The stranger let out a large yawn before pointing at his face with one hand and adjusting his glasses with the other. “I’m Chrysos by the way, but most people here just call me Cree because they don't know how to pronounce the whole thing. It’s not my real name of course, but I doubt that Nyx is your right name either… You get points for using mythology though.” The stranger let out a long yawn again, his hand barely large enough to cover it. As he did so, his large gold ring flashed in the overhead light. A college graduate student normally would not have the money for such a trinket, and no class ring was no plain or thick.
More interesting though was his name which, if Phoenix had been paying attention, she would recognize as one of the fighters in her bracket. He was in group B, meaning that Phoenix would not have to fight him unless they both made it to the final round. Also of interest would be that his PET was nowhere to be seen, and neither was any cart, suitcase, or movable storage.
Phoenix chuckled a bit. “I don’t know.” She didn’t give much thought to why the ring chose an octopus as their mascot – there was more than enough stuff filling her head as it was. Leave it to Tae to bring something like that up, she supposed. It was almost childlike in a way; but of course, there was more to his question than simple curiosity. “A dragon maybe. Or even a shield. Maybe the owner likes octopi?” She shrugged. Perhaps they would find out inside… but for now, there were bigger matters to take care of.
The woman let Tae do his thing, though she did crack a bit of smile as he played a recording of the guard back to him. As they passed through the doors Tae made a small comment seemingly about Octaryon’s facilities. It certainly was worlds away in terms of organization and simplicity. There was so many lights and so much noise in the previous ring, it had almost been dizzying. Seeing it made Phoenix briefly wonder just what the highest level of bot fighting ring looked like, and what kinds of people could be found there.
But the thought was fleeting. Once they were approved and registered, they received an explanation on how things worked. Phoenix folded her arms across her chest and listened intently, which Rhys standing behind her and Tae doing the same. Naturally, the basic core of the system was the same: everyone puts down money, and winners get the cash. But the structure itself was fairly different. There was a base fee paid at the door and nothing more – from there, you had your name entered into their tournament-style bracket system. Winners advanced to the next level, losers just lost. Betters put their money on one PET only, and profited based on how far they went. Moreover, the amount of money the fighters received depended on how much they advanced in the brackets as well.
It was more complicated than the previous night, but still pretty straightforward. So we have to get to the third round at least, Phoenix told herself. Even breaking even wasn’t an option right now. They had to make money, or else all of the risks they were taking – all of the money they had put into repairing Tae – wasn’t worth it. When all was crystal clear, she nodded to the man and walked through the barricade as he opened a space for them.
Their bracket still had vacancies, leaving them time to sit and wait. Seeing as there was little else to do, they watched the fights that were ongoing – fights in a different bracket than theirs. It didn’t give them much intel they could use right away, but it did give them an idea of what to expect out of this ring. Phoenix didn’t know much herself, but after a short time watching she could see that the PETs were a definitely bit more polished and a bit more skilled than those they’d seen previously. Their humans appeared to be from a slightly different demographic as well. While there still were a few rough characters hanging around the garage, many of them looked… well, a bit nerdy?
Perhaps it was because she didn’t see many people like that yesterday, but it seemed there were quite a few here tonight. The overweight young man who won the championship didn’t exactly stick out in this crowd. There were many spindly, hunched-over young men and just as many chubby ones with potentially questionable hygiene practices wandering around. Of course, there were a few ‘normal’ looking folks as well, along with a handful of fairly well-dressed patrons, but Phoenix couldn’t help but notice the subtle majority in this ring. Perhaps a good, kind way to generalize the demographics would be to call them ‘enthusiasts’.
However she neither said nor did anything about it and kept her observations to herself. Soon after the championship ended, the new participants were brought together to have their seeds announced. Silently, Phoenix and Rhys went with Tae to the gathering and waited for the organizers to provide the results of their randomization. There, she took a closer look at the PETs. Most of them were animals, as she expected. Though it seemed there were still a few people keeping their fighters hidden away and secret.
Finally, after a short wait in the group, the results were projected before them. Phoenix’s gaze shifted over to where their fight would be held at the end of the lot against someone named Seth. Nodding, she looked to her companions as the rest of the fighters started to disperse. “Right, let’s get go—“ She was cut off, however, and let out a curse in Cantonese as someone bumped into her from behind. Frowning, Phoenix let Tae catch her, but quickly whirled around as the person who ran into her loudly apologized.
There was a lot of room to maneuver, so she suspected it wasn’t an innocent act of clumsiness. The young man’s smirk only supported her supposition. Her brow narrowed beneath the hair of her wig, but she did her best to keep her anger bottled inside. Causing a scene and blowing up at a kid surely wouldn’t do her any good, especially as a newcomer. “No problem,” she said flatly, giving the boy a onceover. He was tall – around Rhys’ height – but one of the nerdy ones here. Thick glasses, unkempt hair, bad posture. He was obviously smart, though, judging by his t-shirt – unless it wasn’t his. But even then, there would’ve been a cleverness in that.
Phoenix crossed her arms and tilted her head slightly as the boy went on, stating that he’d seen them at the warehouse. He knew her name, Tae’s, but not Rhys’. “Oh… I’m Rhys.” He said with a small nod, though his introduction was glossed over quite quickly. Unsurprisingly, the stranger was highly intrigued and impressed by Tae. More specifically, what made him tick.
“Hm. Thanks.” She bobbed her head, half in acknowledgement and half in feigned gratitude. There was no way she’d let his grubby paws anywhere near Tae, of course. But she didn’t care to prolong this conversation with him any longer than necessary. Instead she simply stood there as he yawned and gave his name. Chrysos, Cree, whatever. He was a bit annoying; they’d been speaking – or really, he had – for not more than a few minutes and she was already done with him. Though she did maintain enough attention to notice the flashy ring on his finger.
The woman eyed it briefly, wondering why someone like him had a piece like that. But Phoenix shrugged it off, deciding it didn’t matter either way. She wasn’t here to steal rings off little boys – she was here to win some cash with Tae. “Nice to meet you, Chrysos.” She was careful to pronounce it the same way he had. “Good luck on your fight.” Indeed, his name had rung a bell, and she had connected it back to the other bracket that had been announced. While she hoped this punk got eliminated, she somehow had a feeling that might not happen. His PET wasn’t in sight, and he had a sort of easy-going confidence one typically had only when they were really sure of themselves.
Having no more to say, she turned and hurried off towards their ring. When they got there, their opponent was already on the other side. Seth was a man who looked to be in his thirties, and was intensely ordinary. Average build, short hair, jeans, and a sweater. He looked like any man you’d pass by in the street – though there was a sort of fire in his eyes. It was excitement, an eagerness to get started. Briefly, Phoenix wondered if this was a general enthusiasm or if Seth had figured out who Tae was and was looking forward to facing off against him.
From across the ring he nodded at them, and even gave a thumbs-up. Friendliness born out of his energy, she supposed. Phoenix returned the gesture with a nod, her gaze lingering on him for a moment. He had been standing in wait, but then decided to crouch down by his PET and do some last minute adjustments. At his feet seemed to be a wolf-type PET, true to the size of the real animal. Where it sat it seemed fairly mundane, without any obvious tricks or features displayed on its body. Upon closer inspection, however, there were small panels placed on its torso and appendages. Undoubtedly they would open up to reveal more weapons and features, but she supposed they wouldn’t know until they got started.
“All right.” Phoenix looked to Tae and moved to pretend she was working on him with Rhys, as well. “After yesterday, I’m confident you can handle this one.” She spoke in a low voice, careful not to make it obvious she was truly speaking to him rather than her human friend. “I guess try to pace yourself if you can – we might have quite a few fights with a few tough opponents.” Cree and his mystery PET annoyingly came to mind. “If there’s anything you need me to do, or any way you think I should act, let me know.”
Rhys nodded, and patted Tae on the shoulder. “Yeah. But you totally got this.” Grinning, he did the same for Phoenix and stepped away. “Well, I’m off to the spectator side.” With a wave he walked off to join the small crowd that was beginning to gather on the side of their ring.
Shortly thereafter a middle-aged woman stepped into the ring. Interestingly she was dressed like a referee, with the striped shirt, black pants, and whistle around her neck. She stood in the middle and stretched her arms out to either side of her, one directed at each fighter. “This is the Group D battle between Seth and Nyx, who are fighting with Eika and Tae respectively. Please send your PETs into the ring. Do not begin fighting until you hear the whistle blow twice. Any hostile movements before that will result in an instant disqualification.” With both hands, the woman motioned for the two bots to come forward. As the wolf made its way into the lines, Phoenix nodded to Tae, motioning to do the same.
The referee moved outwards to the outside of the ring as they moved in. She stopped just on the perimeter and looked from Seth to Eika, then from Tae to Phoenix. Once everyone was in position and abiding by the rules, she placed the whistle in her mouth and blew on it twice.
With the shrill signal, Eika dashed forward, closing the space between her and Tae in seconds. When she was close enough she lunged at him, metallic claws bared and paws in trajectory to land on his chest. At the same time her mouth opened wide, revealing a set of shining, razor-like teeth.
Although Tae was under direct instructions not to show emotion, he did shoot a quick glare at the man who bumped into Phoenix. Thankfully, Tae did not react with violence, but he considered the stranger to be an enemy already. And based on Phoenix’s reaction, she likely felt the same way. The way the stranger spoke about digging around inside of him only made Tae like him less. Those words, or at least the connotation behind them, was too familiar… although why they were familiar was not clear. Rhys and Phoenix had never spoken to him like that, after all.
Ignorant, or perhaps ignoring, the fact that he was not welcome, Chrysos gave a light chuckle and a mock salute to Phoenix. “Yeah, good luck to you too, Nyx. Although based on your fights last night, I doubt you need it! See you in the final round!” Cree was confident, clearly, in both of their skill sets.
Once away from that man, Tae turned towards Phoenix and gave her a once over. Was she alright? Had he done anything to hurt her when he bumped into her or through his words? At fight glance, it seemed like all was well, and based on the fact that Phoenix did not mention anything more, Tae had no choice but to assume all was well.
Besides, there was other work to be done. Tae paid almost no attention to Seth as waited to be let into the ring. The real danger and target for the next few minutes was the life-sized wolf PET. It was a popular and fairly expensive one too since it was a D.O. model. And, as everyone knew, D.O Corporation was the leading PET corporation in the world. In fact, they were the ones who invented PETs in the first place; in modern times they have pushed PETs into nearly every household and into most businesses, and even more so, they continued to be the best developers of PET designs and programs in the world. A D.O PET was a guarantee of quality.
That just meant that Tae was going to have to punch a little harder. D.O PETs did not come with weapons so it wasn't like he was fighting a tank that had been put together as a single piece. Even from this distance, Tae could see that the PET had panels and hatches, meaning that it likely was not even fully solid anymore. The PET would go down just as easily as the past enemies as long as he aimed for the points where the metal plates joined together. Maybe where the legs reached the torso.
“Hm?” Tae voiced when he felt Phoenix touch him. He had not been paying attention to anything besides his target for the last few minutes, although it seemed like no one noticed. Good. “I’ll be careful, I promise,” Tae swore, fully intending to uphold his word.
And then, soon enough, it was fighting time. Right before Tae walked into the ring he made one more quick comment to Phoenix. “There are a lot of cameras around tonight.” And that was it. This fact was important to Tae since it went against his urges to be published, but at the same time, he felt far more eyes on him here than he had at the warehouse. Maybe it was because people were not so concerned about him being human anymore, but that certainly was not all of it. Something else was making Tae feel watched, and he did not like it.
Tae was still contemplating these facts as he walked into the ring and waited for the whistle to go off. Just like the warehouse, Tae was oddly still when the whistle went off. He did not seem to register the sound at all, but that was where the similarities ended. When the razor teeth aimed at him, Tae did not dodge or just accept the attack, he countered with the back of his fist directly on the side of the robotic beast’s snout.
The crunch was immediately heard as Tae watched the PET fly a few feet to his left and almost slide out of the ring. The beast was far from taken out of the game, but its appearance was a bit jacked. Tae’s face, on the other hand, was impassive. Although it was supposed to be, there was also a calm focus that Phoenix would recognize. It was reminiscent to the blank stare he would use when hacking into the police camera station or when he would search the internet for an extended period of time. The fighting was getting easy enough that Tae did not have to actively trigger the program or cause his eyes to flash blue. Just like a child, the more Tae did something the easier it was for him, and apparently, it was the same with fighting.
There was one problem though, as the fight between the two PETs continued, Tae felt guilt. The PET was well cared for, likely it was a pet project and not just a tool to its owner, so it was a shame that Tae was crushing it mercilessly. Despite the guilt, Tae never slowed down unless it was for a tactical reason. He just kept repeating Phoenix's name and by doing so, no other man or PET mattered.
And by the end, it was Seth who ended the match, not the referee. Tae never got a chance to completely destroy the wolf PET because as soon as he had ripped off one of the PET’s front legs, Seth forfeited with the reasoning that his PET could not win against a speedy fighter like Tae without also being fully mobile. It was almost funny because Seth did not know that Tae was actually slower than he was supposed to be due to his leg joints being irreparable. And to top it off, Tae got through the fight without any damages. He was a bit scuffed and dirty due to some oil getting on him and his arms getting dragged against the concrete for a second, but that was it. He was in perfect fighting shape.
In the gap between the first and second fight, Tae was naturally the subject of conversation. How could he not be? A few people tried to approach Phoenix to talk to her but the conversations never went far. The most useful contact was a middle-aged man with a neckbeard who offered Phoenix his PET contact number and instructed her to get in contact with him if she ever needed some repairs done or just some materials. He could get her the materials at a “reasonable price” and keep the transaction “under the table.” Translation, he would get her some quality stolen parts for a price cheaper than it would be legally. He didn't explain how he would get her the parts, just that he could and would.
Tae’s next fight was against Tami, a girl with wild curls that made her look like a walking puffball, and her monkey PET that was controlled through a program on her laptop. The tamarin was larger than its living counterparts, but it was still a smaller beast. This made it harder to get a grip on and left Tae victim to a handful of scratches and bites. But once again, the PET was small, so its weapons could not get deep enough into Tae to do any real or interior damage. A few holes were now scattered across his body, but they were minimal and so could be ignored or easily patched up.
The fight ended similar to how it did with the anaconda PET from the warehouse. Tae gave up on trying to catch the mobile, little tamarin and, while it was latched onto his back, he instead just allowed himself to go limp and fall backward. He was so much heavier than the tamarin that the PET was crushed instantly, ending the fight in one solid crunch.
And that left one fight to go, the finals. By winning the first round they had broken even, and by winning the second round they had made a bit of actual profit, but to actually make the night truly worthwhile Tae was going to have to win this final fight.
Apparently, they were the first to finish, which meant that the final round would be taking place at their ring, so all they had to do was wait for their competitor to finish their fight and then perform some quick patch-ups if necessary.
“This is going well,” Tae said quietly while they waited for the other finalist to come over to them. He spoke without his lips moving, taking advantage of the fact that he spoke with a microphone rather than with actual air. “Considering that is crowd is supposed to be stronger competitors, I’m surprised I’m not damaged. Perhaps it is because I have gotten stronger.” Both in body and in mind; his limbs were made of stronger material now and it was getting easier to turn on his fighting programs without outside stimulus.
It took about twenty minutes for the crowd from the other ring to start making their way towards Tae and Phoenix’s ring. They were chattering, their excitement visible to the eyes and clearly audible to the ears. Whatever they had just watched, it was entertaining and worth talking about. The buzz from the approaching crowd almost matched the buzz that Tae’s audience. Almost; whatever the other victor had going on still could not compete with the excitement a crowd got from watching the first ever truly humanoid PET fight.
Following just behind the main crowd, although still with a fair number of people, was Chrysos/Cree himself. Once again, his PET was not visible, but at least this time he was carrying a case that looked like it was originally intended to hold music equipment. The weight of the case caused Cree to walked crooked, making his already hunched over posture even more defined. He looked like a stereotypical nerd, or at least he did if you ignored the crowd flocking him and the smirk that was far too cocky and socially comfortable for any stereotypical nerd to have.
Even from a distance away, you could see the boy’s eyes flicking around erratically behind his glasses. When they landed on Tae’s tall form though, they halted their search and Cree’s smirk turned into a grin. Turning back to his crowd, Cree said a few words, once again made a mock salute and booked his way over to Tae and Phoenix. Tae, protective as always, took a step a bit closer to Phoenix as he approached.
“Well, since he is still standing I suppose it is safe to say that he won. He looks way better now than he did last time I saw him; I’m glad.” Cree’s comment was referencing Tae’s condition after the snake fight when his arm and leg were crushed and full of holes. It was a bit concerning that this stranger knew about Tae's existence already; unlike any of the other past opponents, Cree had an idea of how Tae fought. Tae had expected his existence and fighting style to be known by his opponents eventually, but being known so soon was a bit of a surprise. The fight was going to be harder now.
“I would hate to see such a remarkable PET get damaged, so I’ll try to be gentle, yeah?” Cree said these words in a tone that sounded friendly, but the words themselves suggested cockiness. Taking a quick glance at the growing crowd, Cree laughed and pointed a thumb in their direction "They seem excited… and so is Rumpelstiltskin here,” Cree raised his case slightly. “Let’s put on a good show for our fans, shall we?”
"Mm-hm." Phoenix gave little more than a noise in response to Chrysos' well wishes. He certainly was the confident one. As she watched him leave she had little doubts that they would indeed meet in the final round, just as he mentioned. It was a pity they had no idea what his PET was - not even the slightest clue, really - but she supposed it was fine. Surely it was nothing Tae couldn't handle, right? And so with that thought she let it go, opting to forget about his low-key arrogance and focus instead on the tasks immediately before them.
In the moments before their first fight, Tae dutifully promised her he would be careful. Her head bobbed a little in acknowledgement, glad she could rest assured he would stick to his word. But then, just as he stepped forward he made a comment that caught her a little off guard. Cameras? Phoenix took a second to quickly glance around. And of course, Tae was right. Thanks to his obvious uniqueness, their fight had attracted the most spectators by far; these nerds were eager to say the least, some of them even pushing each other a little to get a better view of the action. Moreover, aside from the dozens of gazes glued to Tae, nearly everyone directly ringside had their phone poised and ready to document what they were about to witness.
To be honest it made her a little bit nervous, seeing so many cameras out. While exposure would still benefit them and help get them into bigger and better rings, a lingering sense of fear stewed in the pit of her stomach. They had no control of who saw these videos, or where they got shared. It was all of out her hands and that was what truly scared her. More trouble was the absolute last thing she wanted on top of the mess she and her family were already in; getting into bot fighting was supposed to solve her life's problems, not make more. But either way, it was too late to try and stop any of it now. What's done is done, and things would only continue to get bigger and further out of her grasp from here.
Phoenix shook her apprehension off, clearing her thoughts the best she could as their fight against the wolf PET began. At the sound of the whistle Tae was still, unmoving even as the robotic canine lunged at him. Her breath quietly hitched, though it was so quiet no one else could have possibly heard her slight panic. While she still had faith in him and knew he would be fine, it was still hard to simply relax as such a dangerous looking creature charged right for him. But her emotions quickly eased as Tae drove his fist into Eika's head with a crunch so loud it seemed to split the air. Inside she quietly cheered, evidently getting more into these fights herself, but did her very best to keep her steely composure steady.
Eika flew to the side, narrowly sliding out of bounds. His punch had done a number, but she was still ready for more. Tae remained where he stood, calm and unmoving as a tree until he reacted to the canine's next attack. Amazingly, he didn't appear to sustain any damage even as his opponent came at him again and again. Over time, Phoenix felt an odd rush of pride and relief as she watched her loyal fighter perform. The repairs they had done weren't perfect, but they were definitely serving him well. The fight was shaping up to be quite one-sided, with Tae showing an absolutely dominant performance. Although it seemed like there were a handful of disappointed onlookers, the majority seemed quite impressed as well - people whispered to each other, sharing their thoughts and general feelings of excitement. It may not have been a good fight to watch, but it was evidently fascinating for them to see Tae in action.
Eventually Seth came forward, calling for the match to stop once one of Eika's legs was ripped from her body. The referee nodded to him, stepping back into the ring with another shrill cry of her whistle. "Seth and Eika forfeit. The win goes to Nyx and Tae." With that announcement made official, the man across the ring hurried towards his beloved PET, gathering her separated parts and taking a swift inventory of the damages. Phoenix watched with mild interest, rather intrigued by his apparent devotion and care. While she'd seen a few people who seemed to care for their PETs more than usual, none of them seemed as compassionate as Seth. Judging from the look in his eye, even from the way he must've been talking to Eika, he seemed to genuinely care for and about her. Almost as if it were a living, flesh-and-blood animal.
Interesting as it may have been, Phoenix left him alone. Even if she had wanted to chit-chat, she didn't have the opportunity. With the end of their fight the crowd relaxed; the silence that had come over them was broken, replaced by excited chatter. While a few people wandered over to watch the other battles, a handful approach her with their thoughts, questions, and praises. In all honesty it was a bit overwhelming, especially as she didn't want to - or simply couldn't - answer a lot of their inquiries. Fortunately her cool, aloof persona seemed to deter Tae's newfound fans quite easily, and most of them left her alone without too much of a fuss. The only good - or possibly good - thing to come out of it was meeting the man who could hook her up with some repairs and materials... illicitly, no doubt. "Sure. I'll keep it in mind." Phoenix nodded, taking his number before he, too, walked away. He was dodgy to say the least, but she supposed it was not bad to have the resource on hand at the very least for her consideration.
She put him on the backburner as their next fight quickly came upon them. The next human across the ring was a girl named Tami who seemed to use her laptop to control her monkey-type PET. Compared to the other bots they had seen, this one was a bit smaller and a bit harder to handle as a result. Unfortunately Tae sustained a bit of damage in this round, but thankfully its size meant it was less powerful as well. Nothing major was done to the android, whereas the robotic ape ended up being crushed by his mass. The almost wrestling-like technique garnered quite a bit of excitement from the crowd, though Tami was understandably less than thrilled to see her PET meet such a fate. As Phoenix watched the girl approach the mangled pile of metal with tears in her eye, she couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. She looked young. It was kind of crappy to do this to someone who looked barely out of high school, but she supposed she knew what she was getting into.
And so she shook it off, averting her gaze as it came time to prepare for the finals. Phoenix went aside with Rhys and Tae, taking a moment to evaluate their financial status in the tournament. While they were in the green slightly, it was essential that they win this next fight - obviously. She took a deep breath to keep her nerves in check as they waited around for the other semi-finalists to finish up. The pair busied themselves with doing some minor maintenance on Tae, having a hushed conversation together all the while. "Yeah, I'm glad you're still in pretty good shape," she agreed, glancing to Rhys as she spoke to pretend she was speaking with him. "Hopefully we can finish the night off with minimal damage altogether." That would be the best case scenario, of course; but she didn't want to keep her hopes up. If the other finalist was Cree as she anticipated... well, there was no telling what trick he had up his sleeve.
It bothered her that he had information on Tae, but she knew nothing about him or his PET. It was a disadvantage that she literally could not afford - and yet to Chrysos, this was all just fun and games to him. These thoughts stewed in her head a little, creating a displeasure that made it onto her features. Phoenix wished she had asked Rhys to go scout out the boy's fights... but she supposed he was as caught up in their own action as she was.
Well, I just have to keep having faith in Tae. She straightened up as the nearby crowd began to shift, and glanced over as the remaining spectators migrated towards their ring. They seemed awfully excited in the wake of that match. From what she could hear, they seemed evenly split between chattering about the upcoming fight and gushing about the last. So it seemed that Chrysos had given them something to talk about; nearly just as much as Tae did, it seemed.
In the midst of the crowd she saw the boy in question, carrying a case in hand that skewed his posture to one side. It would have been comical had Phoenix not felt so suspicious about what was inside. And of course, there was that annoying grin plastered onto his lips. I want to see that fall right off his stupid face, she thought, although she immediately felt a pang of shame for holding such bitter sentiments towards someone who - to her - was just a kid.
Even so, she couldn't suppress her irritation, which only flared up as she saw the young man sprinting towards them. As Cree spoke she stared at him coldly, her gaze giving no signs of her wariness. "Mhm," she practically grunted, nodding minutely in acknowledgement. "You do that," she added, rather irked by his arrogant display of so-called mercy. To be honest, she was completely done speaking with him. She had neither the time nor patience to deal with his snotty attitude. And so when he chuckled and mentioned putting on a show for the crowd, she bobbed her head once and then turned on her heel to take their position. Enough was enough. There was no reason for her to waste her breath on him any more.
Cree, apparently unbothered by her chilly demeanour, waved and wished them good luck before taking his place parallel to her on the other side of the ring. The onlookers gathered in closely, squeezing together in a dense ring. There were even more cameras out now, so much that they almost seemed to outnumber the faces. Evidently this would be a fight to remember.
At that point the referee took her position in between them, but waited for a moment. Her eyes turned to Chrysos, who finally set his case down and kneeled in front of it. Phoenix folded her arms across her chest and kept her breath steady, hellbent on maintaining her unshaken demeanour despite the anticipation building inside of her. She watched silently, her lips pressed into a tight line as his PET emerged from its carriage. Ugh... A shiver skittered up her spine as she watched Rumpelstiltskin's eight shining legs emerge from the case. Spiders were not her favourite things, and especially not ones that were just about the size of a microwave like this one. However, it seemed the was in the minority here: as the arachnid made it way into the ring, its gold body shimmering under the fluorescent light as it moved, the crowd cheered. Cries of Cree and Rumpelstiltskin burst from the spectators, though there were a few for her and Tae in retaliation.
It all felt a bit surreal in all honesty, but Phoenix tried to ignore it for now. Once all participants were finally in position - Cree had since closed the case and straightened up - the referee signaled for the match to start. But unlike the other matches, Rumpelstiltskin did not lunge at the sound of the whistle. Instead it seemed to skitter back and forth a little, as if sizing up Tae and the situation. Its long legs clicked against the pavement, its form still glittering with every movement. After a few moments, when it seemed Tae wasn't going to attack first, the spider suddenly charged forward and hurtled towards him, bearing sharp fangs just like their opponents before. But instead of landing on him it hit the ground between his feet and rushed through in between them. On the other side it spun around, shooting a shining web of razor-sharp wire towards Tae's back.
Across the ring, Phoenix caught a glimpse of Chrysos. His eyes were obscured by the glare in his glasses, but the rest of his face told her all she needed to know: he was still smiling.
When Tae saw the spider, he felt no fear or excitement at the sight of it unlike everyone else. Fear was not an emotion he had a good understanding of… or at least unreasonable paranoia was not something Tae felt. He was scared of being abandoned by Phoenix and for her to be hurt or killed, but that was it. Phobias such as heights, spiders, and clusters of holes were far outside of Tae’s emotional capabilities. After all, phobias were a hindrance to productivity and so it was best to be without them. That’s why when Tae saw the spider scutter out of its suitcase, the only thought Tae had about it was that the smaller creature would be a bit of a problem for the same reasons the monkey PET was. Small meant mobile, fast, and harder to grab. Plus, this was Chrysos’s PET, and the human boy possessed confidence uncommon in those who had not proven themselves at least once in the past.
Proof that Cree was not a fool to be underestimated came quickly when he did not automatically attack Tae like most of the other previous opponents had. He was using tactics. You spend enough time not attacking, then any attack will be a surprise and take the opponent off guard. When the spider lunged, Tae was prepared to smack it back to the ground, but instead it scuttled between his legs for an attack to his back. And even this was surprising because the attack was not with fangs, but with golden wire likely designed to emulate webbing.
Of course, it was not actual webbing so instead of sticking to its target, the wire used small hooks at the end of them to dig into and latch onto its target which just so happened to be Tae’s upper back. Tae twitched, not because of pain, but because the hooked wire had dug into his back only two inches below where his memory board and mainframe was located. It was his most sensitive and fragile area, which made even two inches too close for comfort.
There was no way to know right off the bat if the wire webbing was designed to pull Tae to the spider, pull the spider to Tae, or if it had capabilities for both. It would be better not to find out though. Reaching behind his back, Tae grabbed hold of spot closest to where the barbs had entered his back and tried to pull them out, but no luck. Instead of being pulled out, the barbed end only scraped against Tae’s insides more.
Okay, so plan B. Moving his hand down from the hook, Tae grasped the wire itself with as strong as a grip he could get on the small metal thread. If he couldn't get the hook out, then he needed to get the wire free from the spider PET. Tea began to pull on the wire, twisting himself and stepping forward in order to force more of the wire out. However, he only pulled out maybe another foot of webbing before the wire snapped free as if cut. The spider had no visible blades besides its fangs, but perhaps it had more going on inside of its back built specifically to cut the wire?
These thoughts went through Tae’s head in a matter of moments, but he didn't have time to think even slightly further because, by the time he turned to face his opponent, the PET was already skittering to the side and shooting out another web from his backside. This time, Tae was able to sidestep it. But they just kept coming. The spider would shoot out a web, detach the wire whether Tae grabbed hold of it or not, and then repeat.
The fighting ring was getting covered in these wires, forcing Tae to dance around them and slow himself down. Eventually, Tae had to take that first wire and wrap it around his neck like a scarf just to stop himself from tripping over it. But there was nothing stopping him from stumbling over the wires on the ground; although they were thin, Tae would still have a bit of an issue maintaining his balance when forced to walk over them. And whenever Tae stumbled one of the wired would make contact, hooking him and causing there to be another wire hanging from him like metallic streamers. And from the grin on Cree’s face, this was his plan.
But there was another part of Cree’s plan that no one saw coming. Without warning Rumplestilkin mixed up his routine and instead of shooting a web at Tae’s torso as it had been the rest of the time, it intentionally shot around Tae’s legs and got hooked on the ground; the spider ran the opposite direction, using the wire to intentionally trip Tae and send him to the ground with an ungraceful fall and loud crash.
Although when Tae looked up he had no injuries from the fall, he had no time to react. The spider PET had pounced on top of his chest and was holding on with its eight legs. The PET managed to get one bite in around Tae’s neck before Tae reached up and finally got a firm grasp of it. Without hesitation and with a loud screech, Tae ripped off six of the eight legs in a systematic matter that made it seem like he was the one who planned his assault, not the other way around.
“Oh no! Whatever shall I do?” Cree dramatically shouted, putting the back of his hand to his forehead to enhance his false woe. As promised, he was putting on a show for the fans. “Poor Rumplestiltskin can’t move, it looks like I can’t win this… Oh wait, I can!”
Cree had a setup that was more or less common for PET fighters. He had two gamer like controls, one for each hand, but what made his set up different was that he also had on large goggles that were a bit like VR goggles only glass. However, when Cree made his confident declaration of victory, he released one of his hands from the control and instead placed it on his goggles where there was a gold-painted button. With one more cocky chuckle, he pressed the button and, like a tidal wife, smaller spiders began pouring out of Rumplestiltskin's mouth and directly onto Tae’s chest. Cree’s goggles were now emitting a slightly yellow light, but that didn't slow his hands down from suddenly rapidly altering between touching buttons on his goggles and his normal controls.
The crowd immediately went wild when they saw the flood of micro-spiders. It was unclear if they knew that the spider PET could do this and were impatiently waiting for the reveal or if this was a new display of PET construction, but either way, everyone loved it. Tae, however, was unable to stop himself from raising his eyebrows in shock as he was forced to take a moment to process the change; the processing only took a second, but by the time Tae got back to his feet and had shoved off the now inactive Rumplestiltskin shell, he was covered in at least fifty micro-spiders that were only slightly larger than dice.
He was trying to brush them off him, but every time he did so the microPETs would just latch onto his hand instead of the ground. It didn't seem like they had any wiring to use, but their legs were barbs themselves and helped stop them from falling off with just a simple brush of the hand. Tae had to pick them off one by one, which was impossible to do with any speed.
And when he glanced down and saw one of the microPETs climb into one of the holes in his arm from the previous monkey fight and from the wire webbing, Tae panicked. His method of panic was not like how humans panicked though. Instead of being loud and making dumb choices, Tae became freakishly still and stopped fighting. He just stared at his arm, buffering and trying to figure out how to proceed. There was nothing in his coding, fighting or otherwise, about what to do if other PETs got inside of him. And because of the swarm of pressure on the outside of his body, he couldn't even tell where the PETs were inside of him; he was not equipped to differentiate interior versus exterior pressure for the most part.
Glancing away from his arm and up to Phoenix, Tae still had his brows slightly raised in an expression of diluted shock. And he was about to break one more rule placed upon him, he was going to talk. His words were not loud, especially not in comparison to the roaring crowd who likely had not noticed exactly what the micro-spiders were doing, but if Phoenix was paying attention she should have been able to hear him or at least read his lips. “There’re inside me,” was all Tae said before there was a loud pop and Tae’s right arm went suddenly limp.
Something inside of him had been unfastened, something vital. And although Phoenix and the crowd had likely not noticed when the spiders first entered Tae, they were definitely noticing what was happening now. Cree had planned this from the very start, that was why he had walked over before the fight to get a look at Tae, that was why he had spent so much time shooting wires all over the fighting ring instead of going for real damage; everything Cree had done before and during the fight was to produce the conditions necessary for him to get his mini spiders inside of Tae and defeat him from the inside out. After all, Cree likely knew that his basic spider PET’s offensive and defensive capabilities were not enough to beat Tae in a normal PET fight; why else would he have sacrificed Rumplestiltskin's main body if he had thought that he would be of any use?
A second loud pop was heard before Tae’s other arm went completely limp too. Once again, Tae glanced up at Phoenix and shook his head ever so slightly side to side. He didn't want to speak again, so instead of doing so, Tae sent a quick text to Rhy’s PET. It simply said ‘ I can’t win this; I don’t know how to get them out of me.” Hopefully, Rhy’s PET would inform him that the message with from Phoenix's PET, then Rhys would look at it and pass the message onto Phoenix herself. Then she could surrender.
It pained Tae to make this choice, but as he stared unmoving at Phoenix as the microPETs crawled around inside of him, he knew that he had to. Tae was not dumb, even with Lai.pro running inside of him he still maintained his intelligence. And as an intelligent being, he knew when he was over his head…. And he was over his head now. He had been taken by surprise and so lost the fight. It was shameful and Tae would be apologizing non-stop for weeks to come… but hopefully the money they won from the previous rounds would be enough for Phoenix. Well, that or the interior repairs were simple enough that he could be fixed and re-entered into another bracket tonight. God, Tae hoped that he could fight through another bracket tonight and win like he was failing to do now. He didn't want all of their hard work this morning to be for waste.
The fight seemed to start off like the rest. Their opponent moved first, lunging forward to attack Tae in some manner. However, Rumpelstiltskin was a bit slicker than previous PETs - instead of charging directly at him, it feinted and slipped between the android's legs. The webbing it shot out then connected with Tae's back, attaching to him in some manner she initially couldn't discern from afar. However, what concerned her more was where it had landed - it was so close to where his critical internal components lay. Just as he twitched, Phoenix found herself unconsciously tensing, her muscles tightening with a pang of worry. Fortunately it hadn't been a direct hit, but it was still a bit close for her liking. The mild anxiety didn't dissipate either as Tae seemed to be unable to remove the web from his body by simply pulling it off. Phoenix clenched her jaw; somehow, she had a feeling this was only the beginning of Chrysos' tricks.
Thankfully, Tae was able to get around this web with just a bit more time. A mixture of cheers and jeers rose from the crowd as the web suddenly snapped, freeing him. But the celebration was short-lived as the spider repositioned itself and spat forth another web, then another and another, unrelenting. Fortunately Tae was able to dodge them, though it became increasingly difficult as webbing decorated the ground, creating an additional set of obstacles for him to navigate around. Come on, Tae, Phoenix thought with fists clenched at her sides, You can do it. Rumpelstiltskin was different from the foes he'd faced before, but surely he could still come out on top.
But it almost seemed like her faith jinxed the situation. As the ring became more and more cluttered, Tae seemed to stumble more, which allowed some of the shining wires to catch. Then, worse yet, the spider suddenly aimed a bit lower. The web was anchored to the ground, and although it initially seemed like a missed shot, it proved to be completely intentional as Rumpelstiltskin skittered away from Tae, tripping him in the process. The crowd buzzed, the same way they would if a goal was scored in any other sport. Beneath the bangs of her wig her eyebrows furrowed, but she did her best to keep the tension off her face. Phoenix couldn't help much in the fight itself, but she could at least do her job and keep her cool.
And so she watched, body poised and attentive but with her face as expressionless as she could manage. Her heart began to race as Rumpelstiltskin leaped onto Tae, biting him in the neck before he finally got his hands around the arachnid. A screech rang out through the area as he tore off three-quarters of its legs, an action that rallied further cries of excitement and disbelief from the onlookers. Phoenix's heart soared a little, lightened with pride and relief; but the feeling was short-lived. The spectators quieted suddenly as Cree spoke, melodramatically throwing his hand to his head. Her eyes narrowed as she watched him, growing a little more irritated with each word that came out of his stupid mouth. It was no wonder he was such a fan-favourite, but damn was he ever an annoying person to deal with.
Just cut the theatrics and get it over with, Phoenix thought angrily, as if he could read her mind. She forced herself to breath evenly and deeply, watching with seeming indifference as Cree's hand moved from his control to his goggles. With a small twitch of his finger he pressed a button, still wearing that smirk of his. Then, not even a second later, a horde of miniature spiders burst from Rumpelstiltskin's mouth, like a horrifying waterfall. The crowd erupted, their energy and noise almost deafening around her. Phoenix took a small step forward, focusing in on Tae as he pushed the larger spider away and stood up to rid his body of the miniature army covering his form. They proved to be tricky things, hanging onto his hands as he ran them over himself. It forced him to pluck them off like pieces of fluff on a sweater, which was obviously not the most effective method of extermination.
Like Chrysos, it was annoying, but Phoenix's confidence was unchanged. Tae was smart, he'd figure out some way to get rid of them easily. And then with Rumpelstiltskin lying motionless on the ground, he'd win.
But suddenly, Tae was the one not moving. Phoenix blinked, waiting for him to continue - but he didn't. At least not right away. He was frozen, gaze fixed on his arm. For the first time she frowned, her body suddenly running hot with panic. What was wrong? Did the spiders have some other effect on him? Gulping, she looked to Cree but saw no change in his smug expression. If anything, he seemed even more pleased with himself. Quickly, her eyes darted back towards Tae when she saw his head finally lift - but instead of facing the spiders he turned to her, wearing a look that made her blood run cold. In that instant she finally understood that he was panicking; maybe even scared. Her pulse quickened as she focused on his face, dread filling her gut as she saw his lips move:
They're inside me.
Then, with a noise so loud she startled, his arm flopped to his side, flaccid.
Somehow the crowd went even crazier, their excitement rising to match her horror. They had gotten in through some damage in Tae's exterior from a previous fight, no doubt. But now that they were in, how would they get them out? Phoenix's fight to preserve her chilly exterior went out the window, her own distress evident in her widened eyes and grimacing lips. Desperately she tried to think of some way to overcome this, but even if she had enough know-how her mind was in disarray, thrown into chaos by this unexpected turn of events. Then his other arm went limp and he shook his head, sending her thoughts into an even faster downwards spiral.
Shortly after Rhys hastily came to her side, bearing a message Tae had sent his PET: "Tae can't win." His voice was hoarse in her ear. "He says he doesn't know how to get them out." Phoenix looked to him, and opened her lips to ask if he knew of a solution. But one glance at his face told her all she needed to know.
"Stop!" Phoenix stepped forward, holding her hand up as she looked to the referee. "We... we forfeit." Her voice felt small, pathetic, weak. And it took all of her energy to speak loud enough so that her words would not be swallowed whole by the crowd. But it was enough. The shrill squeal of the whistle cut through the noise, creating a space for the outcome to be announced.
"Nyx and Tae forfeit. The winners of this bracket are Chrysos and Rumpelstiltskin, and with this victory they remain undefeated!"
The ring of observers exploded again, most of them happy, though a few less-than-kind shouts made it through as well. But it all felt far away to Phoenix. Once the match was officially over, she hurried over to Tae, with Rhys following behind her. Every muscle in her body seemed to tremble, and her inside were still alight with all the emotions running through it. Terror. Fear. Anger. Worry. An awful concoction of feelings plagued her heart, and her head felt as though it were about to burst, unable to contain the storm of thoughts raging on inside of it. Was Tae all right? Could they get the spiders out now that the match was over? How bad were the damages? And how awful he must be feeling now, too. He looked so frightened, so vulnerable in that instant - and undoubtedly his guilt was unbearable, as well. She knew how seriously he took 'serving her', and so he was probably going to take this loss as some sort of failure. Of course, that was the last thing she'd see it as. If anything, she was the one who failed here. If only she had more knowledge, or if she was even smarter to start with. Maybe then she would've come up with an idea to save him, some maverick maneuver that even Chrysos wouldn't have anticipated.
But she was useless, really. There was no point in denying that fact, or beating around the bush. Phoenix's one job was to stand around and look as if she was in control - and in the end she couldn't even do that when it mattered most. She had been - and was - totally helpless in this bot-fighting world, and she hated it. It had been difficult enough to rely on Tae and Rhys to help her in her time of need, as someone who prided herself on her independence. But to see now just how little she truly was good for, how she really couldn't do a single thing here, made the matter even worse.
And of course, there was the fact that they were behind now on their goal. Time ticked on, those mobsters' patience grew thinner with every passing second, and her wallet would only grow lighter.
It took all her willpower not to scream - or God forbid cry - as she ran up to Tae. At the sound of the whistle the remainder of the spiders had fallen away from Tae almost simultaneously; although she didn't notice any emerge from within him. The remainder had grouped together at his feet and marched back into Rumpelstiltskin's husk where they remained. Currently, Cree was taking a moment to first indulge the crowd with waves and well-wishes, his goggles lifted up onto his forehead and controls still in hand. Phoenix ignored him to her fullest ability, focusing instead on her robotic companion. Swallowing down the lump in her throat, she leaned in and whispered, "Tae, are you all right? Can you tell if they're still inside you?"
Frowning, she took a moment to study the rest of him, taking in any other damages he'd sustained. On the outside he still seemed to be in fairly good shape, with only a handful of dents and pockmarks - from those webs, she figured. But perhaps this wasn't necessarily a good thing. Obviously there was damage done to him internally - and repairs to his interior could be more difficult, depending on how much those spiders did. There was the issue of his emotional state, as well. Had Tae been without Lai.Pro, without any semblance of humanity worked into his programming, things wouldn't be as tricky. Perhaps he would feel some sense of failure, but Phoenix didn't have to necessarily worry about him feeling guilty, or angry, or... well, anything at all. But he did have that human-like aspect to him, and she was concerned about that as well.
At this point the rest of the formalities continued around them with the referee making some other announcements. Now that the action was over, the audience slowly began to dissipate, though there were quite a few people who approached Chrysos with adoration and curiosity. Phoenix continued to ignore them, and placed her hand on Tae's shoulder instead. "I'm so sorry, Tae... I wish I knew what to do. I didn't want to have to make us surrender the match, but I-- I didn't want anything worse to happen to you." Then she turned to Rhys and asked, "Do you think we can do something now that the fight's over? Or at least back at home?"
Rhys, whose face was painted with the same emotions as her, hesitantly nodded. "I, uh, I think so... there should be. There's gotta be, I mean. I just need a bit of time to think about it - so I guess, we'll do the repairs at home. But man... I didn't think... I didn't think there was a PET that could do that..." He trailed off, evidently holding some guilt himself. If only he had known more about Chrysos and Rumpelstiltskin, maybe they would've been more prepared.
Phoenix's mouth formed an uneasy line. "Well, we might as well get going then." She straightened up, her arm falling to her side. At that point she noticed Cree look over at the three of them. Still smirking, he broke away from his fans and made his way over, giving a little wave as her drew close. Instinctively she bristled, making no efforts to put on a friendly face for the young man. While she certainly did not like losing - on principle and on account of the money - she wouldn't have felt as negatively if it had been to someone else. Someone more mature, perhaps, or just... more normal. But the fact that Cree was so cocky and had been dripping such arrogance from the very start pissed her off to no end. So of course she felt defensive, and immediately prepared herself for his inevitably insufferable gloating.
"Well, well, what a match," he said, his smile still fixed to his face. "I'd say the fans were quite happy, wouldn't you?" Cree looked from Phoenix to Tae and back, with his gaze flickering only for a split-second to Rhys in between. "And I'm sure you're happy with how gentle Rumpelstiltskin was, too." As usual he seemed jovial and friendly, though the thinly veiled haughtiness was still evident in his voice.
Phoenix said nothing in response to his words, but took a few steps closer to him until they were less than an arm's length apart. "How do I get them out?" she asked, her voice even and cold. As much as she wanted to curse him out for being such a pretentious punk... that would get them nowhere. Irritating as he was, he didn't deserve to get yelled at either - nothing he'd done was against the rules, after all. Blowing up at him would look bad on her, especially since any outburst would really just be a culmination of her stress (most of which didn't even have anything to do with him). But more importantly, she needed to know how to help Tae. Between her pride and his well-being, he took priority, hands down.
Even after the bell sounded, Tae did not try to move towards Phoenix. In fact, he didn't move a muscle. His legs, head, and even his fingers could still move without issue, but his arms now were unattached as if his arm had popped out of the socket, however, in his case, this meant that he could not move them up and down or side to side. But his arms were not the issue here; the fact that Tae lost kept him frozen in place as he frantically tried to figure out a way to still make a profit tonight.
His arm and the shoulder joints were incredibly strong, unbreakable when faced with human force and so had remained intact and strong all of this time. However, the fact that they were unattached by such small things meant that they did not shatter any of his parts. Perhaps they unscrewed something? That had to be it. They were likely able to find and fit their tiny legs into the screw holes and twist themselves until the screw came loose. Tae wasn't exactly an empty husk so the screws, even though they were small, had to still be in the shoulder region of his body. That would make the fix easy, although a bit messy. He could still fight tonight if they just got him in a private area so that he could get inside of himself and twist them back in… well, if they had small enough screwdrivers or the like.
And if they were not able to fix his arms? Well, maybe he could win a fight PET fights without them. Or maybe he could get the victory money from Cree directly. He didn't need arms to beat a human, after all. One kick and that mortal’s skull would shatter like a puzzle. Just one kick...
“I can still get her money,” Tae said to himself, not realizing that Phoenix was directly next to him or that she had asked a question. He was too busy staring off into space to notice any type of sensation internal or external. And that included the spiders and Phoenix both. Unknown to Tae, Phoenix had spoken to him while he stared blankly over the heads of the crowd members.
The spell of the human PET was broken when his mistress placed her warm, fleshy hand on his shoulder. After all, that entire area was off balance now which included the pressure plates that helped him sense touch. Frankly, at that moment, his left shoulder region felt like it was being constantly pushed on even though Tae could visibly see no one there; the place must have shifted to be against the casing he called skin.
Slowly, Tae moved his pupils towards his mistress but did not keep them there. He didn't want to look at her. “No, I’m sorry. I made the choice to give up. I should have been able to figure out a way to get them out of me before they had a chance to do this” To show what he was talking about, Tae tried to move his arm but there was not even a twitch or a squeak in response. “I’d be better off sold for the highest bidder at this rate…” Tae continued, the thought coming to his head despite his previous claim that he could still get Phoenix her money.
The mind that was raging in conflict with itself over how to get Phoenix her money stopped when Tae saw Cree start towards him. Not fully thinking his actions through, Tae started raising one of his feet off the ground so that he could do just what he wanted to; rob the human of his wealth and give it to the only one deserving and needing such things. Yet, the moment the stranger spoke, Tae remembered that this was a person and Phoenix had told him not to hurt people… it was wrong. Tae knew in his own heart, or whatever monitored his emotions, that it was wrong to hurt people unjustly.
It wasn't making it harder to contain this desire to hurt Cree though when his mistress was also so hostile. She was normally so kind… Cree truly was someone not to be trusted if both of their analyses placed him in the negative range.
Cree on the other hand still felt perfectly in control. After all, they were in public and not even someone with a human PET would dare attack someone here. Plus, even if she and her PET did, then they would surely get arrested within the same day. Plenty of people had photos and video of Tae now, and if he killed or hurt someone then dozens of people would post that for public viewing. Cree was safe as far as he was considered, and he was going to act like it.
“Oh, those little things? You don’t… well, not unless you want to rip your PET to shreds. Those babies are tiny and have a habit of skittering away from warmth; even body heat sends them running away. You’d never get a grasp on them before they bury deeper into Tae… well, at least not without my help.”
There was a dramatic pause where Cree reached up and toyed with a few of the dials and buttons on his goggles. He seemed to be doing something, and if the fight was any indication of what the headset did, it had to do with Rumplestiltskin and/or his little babies. “Don’t worry your head over it though; I came over here to do more than congratulate you on a fantastic fight. Those little guys are extremely expensive and I have no intention of letting you run off with a dozen of them; I think you’ve got enough expensive hardware on your hands as it is. Just give me a minute.”
And sure enough, after Cree poked a few more buttons on his headset, one of the little spiders poked it’s many legs out of a hole in Tae’s arm and flopped to the ground before crawling across the ground and over to Cree. From there it skittered up its creator's legs, torso, and then down his arm until it rested on top of Cree’s hand; actually, it wasn't his hand, but instead, the thick gold ring on his finger which before now had seemed pointlessly flashy. It was a tracking device that acted as a homing beacon for when he wanted to summon back his PETs.
If one were to look closely at the spiders, one would see that the once shiny and gold PETs were now speckled with black dots and seemed to have a bit of a reddish tint to their shine. Naturally, since they were coming from his body, Tae was staring at them as if just glaring at them would undo what had been done. Perhaps he should have been glad that they were out of his body, but the fact that they had become covered in gunk while inside of him was problematic. Either they, or some other PET, had damaged something interior that was now leaking or the whole garbage disposal incident had caused issues he was unaware of. He’d have to perform a serious, manual body check once they were home and Phoenix was asleep. Clearly, his automatic scan had missed something.
For now though, Tae kept his eyes on Cree and the spiders even to the point that his eyes pointed in different directions. After all, he wasn't human and at this moment he was not supposed to be acting like one, so why not use his independent ocular camera functions?
Every time one of the spiders crawled out of Tae, Cree was there counting aloud until he reached twelve. “One… two…...eleven… and twelve. That’s it!” Raising his hand high in the air, Cree looked up at his hand that was now covered in tiny, metallic, golden spiders that refused to be still on his palm. They seemed to want to escape the heat his hand was putting off, so instead of becoming stationary, they just kept skittering in a constant loop around his hand and wrist only to end up above the golden ring once again. For a moment, all Cree did was look at his creations with a smile on his face. It wasn't too different than the cocky expression he had been displaying since the start, but there was something else there too; it was pride, justified and well earned. But as quickly as the unhealthy arrogant persona disappeared, it suddenly returned the moment Cree returned his spider covered hand to his side.
“So… Nyx, I kinda took your boy out of commission for tonight, but I’ll be seeing you around, yeah? Maybe for a round two or just to swap notes? I think we can learn a lot from each other. I would love to learn how you are controlling Tae without any visible software… and I have a few ways to boost Tae’s skills too. If you wanted, I’m sure I could figure out a way to get him some retractable blades installed in his wrist area! It'd give him an edge in future fights since he wouldn't just have to rely on brute force!"
The words Cree was speaking about were a bit reminiscent of the blueprints Rhys and Phoenix had uncovered in his files a few days ago, and that was a problem. Tae didn't want to become a weapon unless it was necessary; it was needed now but when this was over the only thing Tae wanted to do was return to his role as a housekeeper and helping Phoenix with her day to day happiness. This little man wanted to ruin that chance.
Attempting to keep his movements subtle, Tae extended one of his legs forward until he had a wider stance and was in a far less neutral and relaxed pose. Oh, he was not in a combative stance yet, but his long limbs were now in a position that all he had to do was shift his weight to his front leg, swing his back lege up, and thereby making it so that Cree would need a new nose… or maybe a new jaw.
As if seeing this small shift, Cree glanced at Tae and cocked his head to the side. “Careful with your PET, Nyx. His eyes flashing like that can’t be a good sign.” And sure enough, unknown to Tae, the moment his thoughts and body had moved in preparation to shut Cree up for daring to try and ruining both his and Phoenix’s future together his eyes had once again become a light show with an inconsistent blue flashing. Not only was the rate of flashes odd, but even the brightness of the flash was varied. “He did this before his fight at the warehouse too… wonder what it means?” Cree wondered aloud, placing his non-spider covered hand to his chin to display his curiosity and thought.
"Since you made him, I'm assuming you know that the light show means... but let me take a stab at it. I'm guessing that it is a glitch of some kind, or maybe the lights are a warning about said glitch. Am I right?"
Tae's words of resolution were lost to Phoenix, swallowed in the noise of the ring and the storm of thoughts in her head. However, his words of apology did reach her through the clamor and chaos. She instinctively leaned in closer, listening to him intently as he took the blame upon himself. An ache rose in her chest as he spoke, so defeated and full of guilt he couldn't even make eye contact with her. "No, it's not your fault at all. And you definitely are not better off being auctioned off." Despite her hushed voice her tone was stern, almost motherly in the way she half-reassured and half-scolded the android for his claims. It was difficult to see him this way, and to hear such things come out of him. If there was anyone to blame it was her - she hadn't been ready to go up against Chrysos, plain and simple. She should've done more investigating, should've found more intel about what he and his PET were capable of. And she shouldn't have been so self-assured, so confident they could win against anyone without a sweat. That arrogance was her fault completely. Tae was the last person who should feel responsible for this outcome, especially as he was the one putting himself out there in harm's way.
As much as she wanted to tell him all of these things and try to shake some sense into him, the appearance of Cree put all of that on the back burner. Phoenix swallowed her pride along with the urge to smack the young man upside the head, and listened quietly as he spoke. Of course there was nothing they could do without him. Or if there truly was, it wouldn't be easy from the sound of it. Although she had no interest in admitting this out loud, she had to say that these thermophobic micro-spiders were a clever addition to his PET. She was sure that Rhys felt the same, even though he probably would never say so under these circumstances.
Chrysos, with all his apparent love for theatrics, paused before reaching up to fiddle with his goggles. The woman took a slow but deep breath in, reigning her emotions in as she waited for him to do... well, whatever the hell he was doing. Phoenix folded her arms across her chest, her posture tense and unmoving as his fingers pushed buttons and turned dials. While she found some relief in the fact that she wouldn't have to pull teeth to get his help in removing the spiders, she said nothing to express this. Or any sort of emotion at all, really. Her gaze was cold and unfeeling, as if made of stone. If she couldn't show any of the anger and disappointment swirling around inside of her, it was easier to just turn up the aloofness of the persona she'd crafted than pretend everything was fine and dandy.
After a few moments, Phoenix saw movement out of the corner of her eye. She looked over to Tae and saw one of the spiders fall to the hard concrete at their feet. Her gaze followed the tiny robot as it traveled across the floor and up Cree's body, where its journey ended on the gold band around his finger. While she watched it move she did notice it was a bit of a different colour; instead of shining cleanly beneath the harsh fluorescent lighting, it had a few dark splotches and she caught a hint of red reflecting off its back. If she were to make some educated guess, she would have to say that it had been dirtied by some sort of liquid inside Tae. Perhaps some kind of lubrication or other fluid that was located within his joints, or whatever the spiders had busted up while inside of him. Beyond that she had little idea about the specifics, but she hoped it wouldn't be too problematic to repair or replace.
Another spider marched out of Tae's body, followed by another, and another. Phoenix stopped watching fairly quickly, and looked to Tae instead. He was watching both the miniature PETs and their master, with a look that she'd probably call a stink eye if he were human. And understandably so. If she was having a bit of trouble keeping her cool around Chrysos, she could only imagine what he was feeling. The woman wondered if any violent or otherwise unsavory ideas came into his head when the young man wandered over, or if her feelings on the matter had kept them at bay. Even if they hadn't and Tae had wanted to rough their opponent up a little, he was obviously keeping such desires under control. Which she supposed was all that mattered in the end; after all, it'd open up a whole new world of trouble for them if her PET attacked a human here.
But thinking about that made her feel for Tae even more, especially seeing as she could empathize to a certain degree. Perhaps when they got him all fixed up they'd find a punching bag or something. Release a bit of stress together.
Chrysos, who had been counting aloud, eventually declared that all the arachnids had been accounted for. Phoenix looked back to him then with the same expression still stuck to her face. Her gaze followed his hand as he held it up, and she watched the small machines scurry around restlessly over his skin. Truthfully, it was a little creepy to watch. Grimacing slightly, her attention shifted away to the boy's face. He wore that same self-assured smile on his face, though she noted a strange bit of tenderness on his features. Some kind of pride, she supposed, like a father admiring his child's success. Which was actually the case, in a way.
She sighed again, exhaling heavily. Annoying as he was and as frustrated as she was, she had to try and let all that anger go for now. She had to remind herself that he did actually deserve the win, and that he hadn't done anything wrong. All they could do now was put things behind them, learn from their mistakes, and focus on repairing Tae. And hopefully getting themselves back on track to keep winning before time ran out, of course.
The boy spoke up again, bringing her attention back to his face. The kind, paternal sort of look had passed, leaving his typical arrogant grin in its place. While Phoenix listened she maintained her steely expression, though a flash of surprise did pass over it as he mentioned the retractable blades. Her mind went back to those blueprints they'd found, and for a split second she wondered if Cree somehow knew about them. But when she realized the foolishness of such a thought, she cast it out and assumed her cool demeanour once more. "Maybe. We'll see." Frankly, she had absolutely no interest in dealing with him again if she could help it. Not for a rematch, not to have him touch Tae, and especially not to teach him the secret behind how she 'controlled' him. If this was the last time she ever saw the young man, she'd be happy.
Suddenly, she noticed some strobing lights out of the corner of her eye. Looking over, she saw that Tae was in a slightly different position from the last time and - most importantly - he was putting on a bit of a light show for them. Phoenix pressed her lips together tightly, and she saw a similar look of worry on Rhys' face nearby. "Let's just say it's a warning." She didn't want to tell him anything at all, but she wanted to give him some sort of answer to satiate his curiosity at least a little bit, lest he start getting pushy about it. Setting a hand on Tae's back, she looked to her friend. "We'd better go." Rhys nodded, then began to gather up some of their things. Then, to Tae, she leaned in and turned her face towards him so that Cree would have a harder time seeing her mouth move as she murmured, "Relax, Tae. It's okay."
With that, she looked to Cree and gave him a small nod. "Congratulations on your win," Phoenix said as civilly as she could manage. Deciding to leave things there, she promptly began to lead Tae away, with Rhys following close behind. While she couldn't be completely sure about what the android was thinking, she had to assume there was the potential for something bad brewing in his circuitry. To be fair, the flashing lights and shifting stance could have been indicative of something less serious than what she was anticipating... but seeing them in the context of their situation, with his disrupted emotional state and Cree's very presence raised some red flags in her head. And so she spoke quietly to him, her lips barely moving as they walked towards the exit. "You did fine, Tae, don't worry about it. We'll get everything sorted out, okay?"
Just as they came to the barricade, the woman that had initially granted them entrance stood to greet them. Phoenix stopped, her hand momentarily falling from Tae's body as she made eye contact with her. "Well fought tonight," the blonde said, her lips curled into a small smile. "Pity you didn't make it out on top. But Chrysos is a formidable opponent, isn't he?" She paused then, her blue eyes shifting from Phoenix to Tae and back. When it was clear that she was not in the mood to chit-chat, the older woman went on. "Seems you're eager to go and repair your PET. Understandable. Admirable, even." Then she turned to her assistant, who gave her a small brown envelope with the number two written on it. But before she handed it to Phoenix she reached into her pocket and placed a small card on top. "When Tae's in fighting condition, contact this number and we'll let you know where our next location is - straight and simple. No riddles or tricks."
"All right." Phoenix pocketed the card - which had the number printed on it and nothing more - then glanced at the envelope. A stack of bills was inside, which she slid out half-way and quickly counted. At least they made a bit of money... though who knew how much Tae's repairs would cost this time. In any case, their earnings were all accounted for. She tucked the envelope away and gave the woman a curt nod. "Thanks."
"See you next time," she said coolly, stepping aside to allow the trio to pass through.
The two humans led Tae up the stairs and back towards the car, with Rhys in front and Phoenix keeping at her PET's side or just behind him. For some reason she felt somewhat protective, compelled to maintain close proximity and to have her hand either on his back or shoulder. It was quite a senseless feeling, seeing as he needed no protecting, least of all from her. But her worry - particularly about his feelings - fueled this instinct, even as they got into the car. Her friend took the front seat and she climbed in the back after opening the door and helping Tae in first. Once they were in the privacy of the vehicle, she turned to him with a frown on her lips. "Are you all right? Talk to me - tell me... tell me what's going on right now." Her shoulders slumped a little, somewhat defeated, her words leaving her feeling deflated and lame. She sounded stupid, but she wasn't sure how else to word it - she just wanted to hear everything about how he was feeling both physically and emotionally, so that they could help him.
Rhys turned around in the driver's seat and nodded in agreement, his brow wrinkled with concern. "Yeah... and do you think you need any emergent repairs right here? Or will you be okay until we get back to Phoenix's place? If you have an idea."
Phoenix was always trying to reassure him that he was not going to be sold off, and most of the time that made him happy, but not this time. He didn't believe her. A failing piece of equipment got replaced, that was how life worked, and today he had failed. Frankly, he deserved to be sold for what he just failed to do. Anyone would buy him as long as they did not find footage of this fight anywhere, Tae could guarantee that even still. Not letting his worthlessness go, Tae had to say more on the topic of selling him or, in this case, giving him back to his creator which just the other day had seemed like a dismal idea. “Imagine the reward money my creator will give you for finding me. I bet that would pay off your father's loans and then some. My creator must be at least a millionaire after all.” Although Tae had calculated his inventors worth to be closer to the billionaire range.
These words were muttered under his breath so Cree did not hear them even when he approached. It wasn't even clear if Phoenix heard him, but it quickly didn't matter as the idea of being sold was replaced with the idea of getting money by force. Robbery was easy even without murder, and with murder as an option, it wasn't even a challenge. Killing humans was, of course, bad since Tae was made to serve people, but helping Phoenix was the most important fact about himself so it trumped everything else. Morality was nothing when his mistress was on the line.
These thoughts stayed at the top of his mind as the rest of the conversation continued, and over time, they even increased from just thought to preparation to actually act on them.
Tae never considered Cree to be anything more than a talented inventor. This man was not his creator, and that Tae knew for a fact. He didn't know how he knew it, but he did. When Tae met his creator he would know so right away. This was a child, a talented one, but still just a child with enough money for gold but not for what Tae was made out of.
When Phoenix responded to Cree’s desire to put knives in his wrists, Tae’s head snapped towards her. Really? Was she actually considering turning him into an actual weapon? She disliked violence, so why would she even think about indulging Cree’s ideas? Perhaps she was just as disappointed in Tae’s lack of combat adaptability as he was and so felt that an upgrade was needed? All he wanted was to stay home and care for Phoenix, but now Phoenix was going to let this stranger cut open his arms and add in some weapons exactly like how Tae didn't want to be. But he would let her; Phoenix could do whatever she wanted to him, even if it was against his wishes and involved this schemer who caused this problem in the first place.
The realization that Phoenix was willing to make him even more of a weapon did not help Tae calm down from his already aggressive and self-deprecating thoughts, so when the light show started Tae was not super surprised. Aggressive thoughts, as seen in the past, tended to trigger his eyes and what was more aggressive than killing Cree or updating his body with true weaponry. Calling his eyes a warning was a good guess, although Tae was not too pleased that he had an unconscious and uncontrollable warning sign since it would make him less effective whenever in any real incident was occurring. Violent sneak attacks were impossible if his eyes truly were a warning.
As the two humans and PET made a quick escape, Phoenix tried to calm Tae down but he made no signs of doing so. In fact, even as the group was leaving Tae twisted his neck around his shoulder a bit too far to be natural so that he could keep an eye on Cree who was watching them go with a pleased smirk. And when he caught Tae staring, Cree had the gall to raise his spider covered hand and wave at the PET. Tae did not reciprocate, only stared with flashing eyes until it was impossible to see Cree due to the bodies and pillars in the way.
The only thing Tae had to say to Phoenix at her continued reassurance was, “Yes, yes I will.” But those words were not full of optimism, but instead spoke in a voice an octave lower than how Tae normally talked and as such took on a more threatening tone to it. Also notable was that Tae said I, not we, and as such implied that he was going to get things sorted out on his own. He’d fix this mistake one way or another because this failure could only be blamed on two people, Cree and himself.
The chat with the woman from before got Tae distracted enough that his eyes calmed down, which meant that his aggressive ideas became less prominent too. Losing the anger let the self-hate come back take over though. Hearing about repairs and next time didn't help him either. If Tae could cry he would be, but the PET had no glands in his eyes capable of producing liquids and so Tae’s face stayed dry and blank. He watched very closely as Phoenix pulled out the money and counted it; they made some profit, but surely none of it would matter after repairs were done. Unless they were very lucky, he was going to cost Phoenix even more money than she had already spent. Worthless.
Tae normally would have felt a rush of joy at Phoenix touching him, but this time he didn't even react or acknowledge the contact on his shoulders and back. He didn't deserve her touch. This was further proven when they reached the car and Tae tried to open the door for her, but his arm failed to even twitch towards the door. His fingers clenched, but that was it. Tae couldn't help it, he let out a sigh that spoke volumes about how he was doing. He tried to hide the sigh, but it was hard to do that since it wasn't like he could claim that he was just breathing.
Once in the car, a task that was surprisingly hard since he didn't have arms to help him scoot over, Tae forced himself as far away from Phoenix as possible. If he could have moved them, Tae would have crossed his arms in order to keep himself closed off, but since he couldn't, Tae merely let his arms flop onto the seats and pulled up his legs into his chest. Since his legs were so long though, this act was highly awkward and almost completely hid Tae’s face from view, not that he was trying to show it anyway. Tae hid his nose into his legs further turning himself into a metal ball. Being in private, no longer having to pretend to be emotionless, was allowing Tae to show everything he was feeling… and that feeling was closed off and extremely dejected.
And being asked about his emotional state was not exactly helpful either. “Your concern is appreciated, Phoenix, but there is nothing to worry about. I can still perform my duties.” Even as these words were said they were not said with conviction since Tae still had his face in his legs. He even went so far as to try and rub his eyes on his knees as if he were wiping away tears; the action was instinctual in response to his level of sadness, likely meaning that Lai.pro had something installed within that made him pretend to show sadness as humans would. “And I don’t know what you wish to talk about. Until we know for sure the extent of my damages, we can’t make a plan for the future about how we are going to get money.”
“I should be asking you how you are feeling. It is your father at risk at the moment; you must be distraught that I failed to make the money you needed. Once I’m fixed, I’ll devote myself fully to making enough money so that you have nothing to worry about.” Even if he had to sell himself to make that happen, it would happen. He’d go off on his own while Phoenix was sleeping if he had to. She had requested and forbidden him from going off alone, and for all this time Tae had followed that instructions, but he did not have to. It was not a direct command which meant that the final choice was left to Tae.
“I have more ideas than just bot fighting; I’ll get your money” Was all Tae had to say about that, but his mind was racing. Getting a job would be too slow, which meant that he was going to have to search for work outside of the normal professional market. Possibly he could do some sort of labor such as lifting heavy things, being a bodyguard, or maybe even some variation of a hitman. He wasn't going to kill people since Phoenix would not forgive him for that, but beating someone up for money was basically what he was already doing...only this would be humans instead of PETS. Whatever it took.
In response to Rhy’s question, Tae actually glanced up a bit to look at Rhys. “That won’t be necessary. As far as I can tell without running a full body scan is that my arms are detached, but that’s it. I don’t know of any damages that will actually cause future problems… although reattaching my arms will not be easy.” Like a child, Tae was still notably not looking at Phoenix. He didn't want to.
“Can we just go home now?” Tae asked Rhys, feeling cramped in this small car and not liking the fact that he could not put distance between himself and his mistress. Fixing his arms was low on his list surprisingly. Oh, part of the reason he felt so worthless was that his arms were not working, but logic was not the strongest force at play here. Tae could fix part of his problem if he tried to, but he was not in the mood to try. All he wanted to do was power down for a while. Never before had he felt an emotion this strong, well not a negative emotion at least. He had felt love, loyalty, and protectiveness in great amounts daily, but this was something new and far worse.
It only happened once, but Tae’s eyes flashed blue as he once again wiped his eyes against his knees to remove the invisible tears. “I just want to leave this place…”
Tae was quite attached to the idea of selling himself off in repentance, as he went on to tell her how much his creator would pay for his return. However, his suggestion was simply met with a quiet shushing. "Nonsense," she murmured sharply, closing the topic there for the time being. Not only was Chrysos drawing dangerously close to hearing their conversation, but she simply did not want to hear any more about this line of thinking. Pawning him off to make some money was not the solution here, under any circumstance. She was determined to stick to their commitment to these bot battles, so they would pick themselves and get right back in there, just like a human fighter would.
But deep down she knew that Tae's proposal made sense. It was her original goal to return him to his rightful owner, after all - in doing so for a monetary reward, she could hit two birds with one stone. And even have some leftover to make her life better, just as he said. It was certainly the most sensible option in every single way - it would probably even take less time to accomplish, depending on how they played it... So why was she trying so hard to ignore this idea, to shove it completely out of consideration? Why did she want to take the more difficult route, especially now that they might even fail?
The reality was that Phoenix knew the answer to this, too. It was because she didn't want to give Tae back. It was hard for the woman to come to terms with this thought, but it was true. Somewhere along the line she had grown attached to him, and had developed some kind of affection - of what exact nature she couldn't say, but it was undeniably there. Even though he'd initially just been an unbelievably heavy hunk of garbage to her, and even though he'd nearly killed a man before her eyes, he was much more to her than that now. He was a companion, a source of support, and-- well, really, he was a friend. Not unlike Rhys or anyone else from the club. He was more than just a belonging to be given back to someone - he was his own entity; a thinking, feeling, wanting being.
But what if he truly wanted to sell himself off? Some part of her thought. What then?
Phoenix pushed the idea out of her mind. Then... she would have to cross that bridge when they got there. But this was neither the time nor the place to deal with the matter. There was Cree to deal with, robotic arachnids to get out of Tae, and a highly disconcerting light show to try and calm down. Though even as they moved away from the tournament's victor, his mood did not seem to be improving. He was saying yes to her, but his tone did not match his words. Hearing this, the woman felt her heart pounding a little faster and a little harder in her chest, as unease brewed inside of her. What would she do if Tae went berserk and they couldn't get a hold on him? If anyone were to be hurt, she'd have even more problems to worry about. The very thought of adding to the stress in her life made her stomach tighten, prompting her to take in a slow, deep breath to try and keep herself composed as well.
Thankfully, once Cree was out of their faces and they began to collect their money instead, Tae's flashing eyes began to settle. But his spirits were still evidently in the gutter, as embodied by a deep sigh that he heaved after being unable to open the door. Phoenix frowned deeply as she took on the task of helping him into the vehicle, and not simply because of the physical struggle. It felt strange to see him in such a state; though she supposed that with his bright, positive emotions there had to be the opposite as well. There were two sides of the coin, just like a real human. Still, she had to say that she didn't expect his negative emotions to manifest themselves the way they did. The android looked completely defeated as he sat in his seat, with his arms limp at his sides and his legs hugged to his torso. If not for his dysfunctional upper extremities he would have been in a perfect fetal position, with his face even tucked between his knees.
A dull ache quietly formed in her chest at the sight of him, especially when she realized he was trying to get as far away from her as he physically could. And he didn't sound much better either as he assured her he could still perform his duties, all while rubbing his face against his knees like he trying to brush away tears. Phoenix exchanged a worried look with Rhys but neither of them spoke yet, giving Tae a chance to answer their questions and let out whatever he'd had to bottle up while inside of Octaryon. Unsurprisingly, he was still stuck on the fact that he felt he had failed, and that they were now off track in terms of acquiring the funds they needed. And then of course he brought up her father, turning the question back on how she felt now that they had lost precious time and money.
A jolt of panic ran through her body, igniting the blood in her veins as an image of her parents, desperate and afraid, formed in her head. Phoenix gulped, her pulse quickening as her palms began to grow clammy. She hadn't forgotten about them for a moment - how could she? They were always in the back of her mind, driving her forward throughout these past few days, and they always rose to the surface of her thoughts during the rare instances of idleness. However, to have her attention drawn to them so explicitly by another person stirred up all the emotions she was trying so hard to keep controlled. But it seemed that even then she couldn't help that right now either. Nevertheless, she tried. "I'm fine. We still have time, so don't worry about that right now." Phoenix spoke quietly but firmly, though the poignant pause before her response was more telling than the words themselves.
Tae answered Rhys then, informing them both of the results of his diagnostic scan. It wasn't exactly reassuring to hear that reattaching his upper extremities would be difficult, or that he couldn't predict how the damages would affect them going forward. But she supposed that was par for the course: an unexpected threat caused an unexpected loss and an unexpected aftermath. The woman met her friend's gaze again, which appeared as uneasy as hers probably was, but it soon shifted back to Tae as he spoke again. Looking at him made her heart feel heavy, as if there was a weight pulling it down into her gut. He was so down, so broken down, and she had no idea how to help him - both physically and emotionally. Her fingertips pressed into the damp flesh of her palms as her hands curled into fists on her lap, frustrated. Comforting a flesh-and-blood human was one thing, and most of the time she was able to do it; so why was it so much more difficult now? Why could she not find the words to say?
She had lowered her head and closed her eyes, her shoulders rising and falling steadily as she fought to keep her breath controlled and her eyes free of tears. Any sense of control she had over the situation was slipping away by the millisecond; worse yet, her thoughts were getting tangled and thrown astray by the emotions that were beginning to overwhelm her rationality. I just want to go home, too, she thought, pitifully.
Thankfully, Rhys' composure was still intact. "All right. Let's go home and just take a quick breather. Rest a little, gather our thoughts, and figure out where to go from here." He frowned, looking from Tae to Phoenix and back before turning forward. Wordlessly, he turned on the ignition, awakening the car with a grumble heading off back to Phoenix's apartment.
*~*~*~*
The ride home was silent, save for the quiet murmur of jazz music on the radio. Phoenix remained in her state of teetering on the brink of a mental breakdown for the entirety of the trip: eyes closed, breath deliberate, thoughts in utter chaos. Aside from trying to keep herself from bursting into tears out of fear and panic, she tried desperately to figure out what to do going forward. As much as she wanted to just fix Tae up and keep going, was it really a possibility? Not even Tae knew what the repairs might entail, from the sound of it. Nevermind what they would need or what it might cost. While Rhys was generously helping out, he had his own limitations and responsibilities to keep in mind. He was just her friend doing a nice thing, after all. Besides, this wasn't about her or what she wanted - it was about saving her parents. Literally life and death. So then the most practical option was indeed to sell Tae, wasn't it? She'd get the money, she could probably even get him back to his original owner as intended, and she could ensure her father's safety. Even pay back Rhys and have some leftover for herself when she got back to her normal, mundane life. A win-win-win in all ways, except... she'd lose Tae. A friend she'd made, someone she really came to care about. And then it came back to that one thought - if he wanted to, who was she do deny that? He had a sense of autonomy now, the ability to make his own choices and decisions. Sure, he took orders from her but he was still his own being. But did he truly want to, deep down, or was he panicking too? Latching onto this idea despite his real desires, simply because he felt guilty for something he didn't need to?
Eventually, she began to feel a dull ache in her temples. Unfortunately for her, by the time they arrived back home she was no better than she had been. "We're back," Rhys said, pulling her out of her thoughts. As he turned off the car and hopped out, Phoenix slowly sat up and rubbed her hands over her face. Wordlessly she exited the vehicle and circled back around to Tae's side of the car to help Rhys in assisting him out of his seat. Once the task was done, she reached into her pocket and handed Rhys her keys. "Go up ahead. I need some air." Without waiting for a response she turned and walked off, around to the side of the building where she'd originally gotten the news that started it all. As she went she pulled out her cigarettes and her lighter, her hands trembling and fumbling as she took one out, raised it to her lips and ignited the end.
Once she was in a spot out of sight and earshot - and by herself, of course - she leaned against the wall and took a deep drag. The smoke drifted steadily out of her lips at first, but the tail end came out in short bursts as she finally allowed the tears to flow down her cheeks. Sobbing quietly, she sank down into a squat, draping her arms over her knees and curling her back over them. Crying had always been a strange thing for Phoenix; it was something of luxury she had to allow herself to indulge in, but also something shameful she never wanted to be seen doing. But in this moment it was just something she needed to do. As if it was the only way for her body to expel the cocktail of negativity that had brewed inside of her.
By the time there were no more tears to cry, her cigarette had burned away just about to the filter. Sniffling, Phoenix finally lifted her head. Although her head still ached, she at least felt the clarity of calmness. While the fear and worry hadn't gone away per se, they were muted now - pushed to the background like everything else. Inhaling deeply, she rose to her feet and dropped the butt on the ground. After quickly grinding it under her shoe she wiped her eyes and began to make her way towards the doors. It would be obvious to the others what she had been doing, but so be it. Surely she was allowed this instance.
More importantly, the woman finally began to gather her thoughts now that she had let out some of her stress. While she couldn't say that she had figured things out, exactly, she at least had a better idea of where - and how - she wanted to start. And so when she opened the door to her apartment she was a semblance of her usual self: once again there was confidence in her posture, and a sense of renewed determination in her gaze, despite the puffiness around her eyes.
Rhys sat with Tae, attempting to get a start on figuring out repairs, when Phoenix took a seat next to the two. "How's it going so far?" she asked.
"Just started, really... I'm not really sure, to be honest." Rhys answered without making eye contact, his brow furrowed with concentration. He did, however, add, "You okay?"
"I'm fine." This time the answer sounded more believable. After a moment of pause she spoke again. "Listen, Tae. I know you feel like shit for losing, but you shouldn't. I should have done more to learn about Chrysos and try to anticipate things. But even if you don't agree with that, what's done is done. We lost and we can't change that outcome, but we can take the experience and move forward. Be better and smarter for next time. So stop moping and trying to sacrifice yourself. Stop saying I should sell you off because--" Phoenix stopped for a second before continuing. "-- because I care about you. I don't want to just pawn you off like you're a piece of equipment, because... you're really not anymore. So let's just take it one step at a time. Let's see what it would take to fix you up and go from there before we jump to drastic measures. If the odds are really stacked against our favour, we'll figure things out from there."
Another instance of silence, during which she looked between Rhys and Tae, her arms folded over her chest. "Any questions?"
The mood in the car was heavy the entire ride home, and Tae knew that he was not helping. He should have been helping. He should have been offering kind words or trying to distract Phoenix from where her mind was, but he couldn't bring himself to do so, and that made him feel even worse. Useless limbs with a useless mind.
Similar to Phoenix, Tae was in no better mental shape by the time they made it back home. Tae was immobile the entire time. His body did not flinch even once, and because he was not human, he could stay in a single uncomfortable position the entire time without drawbacks. No cramping at all. He only moved when his door was opened for him, much to his further embarrassment.
When Phoenix excused herself from the trio, Tae stared after her for a moment. He wanted to say something, just like he had the entire car ride, but he didn't. What could he have said that would make the bad situation not worse? Especially since he was part of the reason for her pain. Although it pained him to do so, he let her go, although not without a heavy sigh and a few more seconds of staring after her.
After that though, Tae was rushing as fast as he could to the apartment. His long legs still worked fine after all. He did whisper a few words of thanks to Rhys on the way up though, mainly for him opening the doors and calling for the elevator, but they lacked the same enthusiasm Tae normally showed. It felt so strange to be served when he was the one supposed to be serving others.
Once inside, Tae immediately went to his spot on the ground; the same square space of carpet that he frequented. It had the best signal of the entire place so charging and searching the internet was fastest there, and it also had a perfect view of the entire room which was just a bonus. He wanted to power down right then and there, but even depressed like he was, he still wanted to make sure that Phoenix got back safely. Tae had only moved over to the couch when Rhys wanted to get a good look at his damages. Sad or not, Tae was not going to be difficult.
Eventually, his mistress returned although it was immediately evident that she had been crying. Another apology tried to escape Tae’s lips, but it just came out as an inaudible whisper; they may have noticed that he said something but there was no way human ears would have picked up on his words. He couldn't blame her though; if he had tear ducts, he likely would have been crying too.
Still, Tae knew that his tears would have been less than hers. Her family was at risk, he was just disappointed in himself. His pain was nothing in comparison to hers, yet he dared act as if it mattered. He wasn't even human; of course he mattered less than the miracle that was human life. He could be destroyed or his memory wiped over and over again, and it would not matter. She had one mind; one family; everything about her was more valuable than himself. Yet here he was, feeling so sorry for himself that her tears did not even move him enough to comfort her.
It was a horrible cycle, and eeing her in front of him all puffy in the eyes made everything worse.
“I understand. What’s done is done, so I’ll stop mopping,” Tae repeated, his tone still moppy. But that was not going to be sufficient. He needed to stop being sad, she told him to stop being sad, so he had to do it for her sake. He was not helping, and that alone was a crime. He could not change the facts of the past, Phoenix was right about that, but he could and would move forward. He’d do anything for her, even at personal sacrifice.
Lai.pro gave Tae emotions, but it was nothing more than a program. Yes, the emotions felt real, but that didn't change the fact that Tae knew what they were at his core; they were ones and zeros, symbols and numbers, all of which could be uninstalled or changed with coding experience. And Tae had coding experience simply because he was code. Perhaps he’d be more useful without Lai.pro, but Tae could not bring himself to get rid of it and the positive emotions it brought him. After all, without Lai.pro, he may not love Phoenix as much as he did now. He could not risk that. So instead of getting rid of emotions as a whole, Tae went inside of himself, found the file that contained Lai.pro, and deleted a portion of the coding within there. A few dozen lines were there one second, and then gone the next. And it wasn't a small chunk either, so hopefully, sadness was all that he had just deleted.
In Tae’s desperation to be of help to Phoenix, to meet her needs and act as her rock, Tae also did not have the forethought to save those lines of code before getting rid of them. They were gone for good, and it was like they were never there in the first place.
For a few seconds, Tae did nothing but sit there. He did not blink, talk, or respond, but his eyes did flash once. After a millisecond of blue, Tae started smiling. It was small, barely more than a twitch, but it was a smile.
“You’re completely right, Phoenix,” Tae said with more volume and gusto than he had since his loss against Chrysos. “We lost, but we gained experience and got our name out there. If anything, more people will challenge us now that they have seen that I can be beat. We can turn this into a positive if we try.”
If Tae’s hands were working, he would have reached out and took phoenix’s hands, but they weren't so he only had one option. Tae, whether he had to stand up or just scooch over, moved towards Phoenix and gently placed his forehead against her forehead. A light tap of his cold skin against her warmth. She had her arms crossed at this time, which normally would have made it hard for this motion to be possible, but because Tae was so tall he was already leaning over quite a bit so it didn't interfere with his sudden public display of affection.
“I care about you too, Phoenix, and I don’t want to leave you either,” Tae said, not moving away from Phoenix or caring that Rhys was just feet away. No air came from his mouth, but his words were clear. “Nothing has changed, so I have no questions. Just like before, I’m going to fight for you and those you care about no matter what stands in our way. One step at a time.”
Pulling away, Tae returned to his full height. “I apologize for my overreaction before, but let’s move on, just as you said. So...take my shirt off, would you?” Tae asked Phoenix, his embarrassment about his arms being useless no longer seeming to bother him. And as usual, his humility was non-existent too. This time though, instead of just invading boundaries or stripping in front of others, Tae was trying to get someone to strip him… and that someone he was centimeters from kissing just seconds ago.
“This is going to be a bit of a pain since it is going to require a lot of microwork. We are going to need to find and reattach the screws, bolts, and other fastening material that was released when the spiders got into my arms. The largest of these pieces are an inch long, but even that is only a few centimeters wide. We are going to need the longest, most flexible, and smallest tweezers possible or we are going to have to completely take apart my arms and the metal casing that surrounds them which will also be difficult because I don’t think we have the materials needed to reforge my arm casing back together when done.” Basically, as far as Tae knew, they were either going to need to do a lot of small, finicky work or they were going to have to completely deconstruct his arm.
More importantly though, Tae was back to his productive mind and talkative ways. He was not jumping around or grinning like usual, but he seemed very determined and ready to get to work. It was a clear, sudden improvement.
“Just fix my arms, and all will be well,” Tea declared, seemingly believing his own words now.
And there was a reason for that. He had clarity in this moment that he lacked before. Things needed to be done for Phoenix and her family to be happy, and she was unwilling to do it. She was unwilling to make the orders… so he would. Hurting people was wrong, but Phoenix suffering was a crime against humanity. Tae would set the city on fire before he let her shed another tear. His hands could rust away from the blood upon his knuckles, it didn't matter. If a price needed to be paid, then he would pay for it in spades.
All he needed was his arms, then he could get to work.
Tae understood, and agreed to stop moping about their loss. If he were a human, Phoenix would have had some doubts about his words. People always liked to say that they understood, that they would stop doing XYZ, that they would change. But lying was as easy as taking a breath. People could say whatever the hell they wanted, but they would have to back their words up by taking real action. With Tae, however, it was different… right? Even with the addition of Lai.Pro, she could take him on his word, couldn’t she? Or did that actually change too?
The woman’s gaze lingered on his face, as if trying to decipher some hint in his perfectly crafted features. But there was nothing – his face was blank, and for a couple of moments the android did absolutely nothing at all. His eyes and his body were still, as if he were a silent statue. Phoenix exchanged a lightning-quick glance at Rhys, who apparently shared her inkling of apprehension. Was he thinking, she wondered, or was this a manifestation of the damage that had been done?
Then, just before her worries could grow any larger, Tae’s eyes flashed and a smile came across his lips. Phoenix arched her brows slightly, surprised at the abrupt shift in emotion. His sudden cheery optimism was a bit jarring to say the least and, once again, if he were human it would have probably raised more than a few red flags. On top of lying, people could fake their emotions as well – create facades to strengthen or distract from their dishonesty. As for Tae… she found herself wondering if he was capable of this, too. To what extent was Lai.Pro capable of mimicking the human psyche?
She wasn’t sure, and she was all too aware that she had no real way of finding out. For now, she made every effort to stow her uneasiness away and focus instead on the trust she had for Tae. He was faithful and had her best intentions in mind: that was more than she could ever need or ask for in these trying times. Closing her eyes, she took in a slow, deep breath before letting the air escape in a gentle sigh through her nostrils. “That’s a good point,” she said after opening her eyes. “Even the worst situations have some upside to them. Sometimes you just have to flip it on its head to see it that way.” To her surprise, her lips managed to form a small smile. It was comforting to have Tae’s bright mood back in her life, especially when it felt as though the darkness had been closing in from all sides. Hearing this new perspective was good as well, considering she genuinely hadn’t thought of it.
Once Tae had spoke, he moved over towards her and, lacking function in his appendages, softly laid his forehead against hers. Phoenix’s eyes widened slightly, taken aback by the gesture – though only for a split second. And as the feeling faded the grin grew on her face. Even though she was very much aware of his mechanical form, it still always felt a little odd to feel that his skin was cold. Perhaps her brain couldn’t help but anticipate warmth, given how human he looked. Still, she had to say that she rather liked the feeling, particularly now that her face felt tight and puffy from crying.
The tightness in her chest dissipated ever so slightly as he reassured her that he felt the same. At this point Phoenix uncrossed her arms and reached up, gingerly laying a hand on his cheek. “Thank you,” she said softly. There was a minuscule falter in those short syllables, a tiny hiccup as she felt an inkling of the urge to cry again. Had she said more it would have been extra noticeable, though perhaps Tae would have been able to detect it nevertheless. In any case, she looked up to meet his eyes and softly caressed the side of his face. She wasn’t great at being sentimental or sappy – and especially not when her friend was still a few feet away, watching this all unfold – but she hoped that the android would be able to see the affection and appreciation reflected in the surfaces of her dark eyes. Although the bleakness and uncertainty of their situation was going nowhere anytime soon, his words and his actions did wonders to ease the pain weighing on her heart. Moreover, she was more confident now that everything he said was true – that she could believe and trust him as she always had, and probably more than anyone she’d ever known.
Maybe later, when they had a moment alone, she could take some time to express herself a bit better. For now, she let her hand flip from his face as he straightened up and apologized. “It’s fine,” Phoenix said, with a small shake of her head. He seemed to be finished with all emotional matters at that point, and promptly went on to ask her to remove his shirt. While such a brazen request may have spurred some snarky comment or even a bit of temper had it come from another man, with Tae it was considered done the moment he asked. Without protest, she took hold of the bottom of his shirt and began to lift it off. Here, Rhys finally approached them and helped her out, seeing as it was a bit difficult to complete the maneuver given their difference in height and the weight of Tae’s arms. While he had been witness to their tender moment, her friend said nothing and seemed to act normally, as if he had not been in an awkward position at all.
Instead the two humans listened carefully to Tae while he spoke, finding focus despite their fatigue. It sounded like they would need more of it, too, and in spades. “I don’t have any access to any type of forging tools or facilities,” Rhys said, speaking for what felt like the first time in a while. “So we’ll do what we can without taking your arms off.” Phoenix looked to him and nodded, having no qualms about this plan. They had enough on their plate to deal with already – if they were to take apart Tae’s appendages with no way of putting them back together, or if they were able to but did it poorly, they’d be at a further disadvantage. The idea of straining her eyes and pushing her fine motor skills to their limit after a long, stressful evening was not exactly appealing, but it needed to be done. Tae had rallied himself out of his despair and Rhys was loyally helping them both without question, so she had to do her part and get it together, too.
“All right. We’ll do what we need to get your arms back in action,” the woman said, verbalizing her agreement and solidifying her conviction. “Do you think you have the tools we need, Rhys?”
He puckered his lips, thinking, before he went over to his supplies and began to look around. “I think I do – well, I should. They’re probably not to the same standard as what the person who build you would’ve used, Tae, but… well, let’s see.” Metal clinked against metal as he went through his things, slowly pulling out a few tools and setting them on the ground beside him. Phoenix watched as he worked, idly folding up Tae’s shirt and setting it aside.
After a few minutes he gathered up everything he’d pulled out and brought them over to the pair. He laid them out before them, and Phoenix moved a little closer to see. There were indeed quite a few long, flexible tweezers in his possession, and of varying sizes. In addition to that he had a couple of magnifying tools: one of them was a pair of glasses, obviously sized to Rhys, while the other seemed to be a magnifying glass mounted to a sort of headband, and there was even a small light attached to it as well. That one’s probably mine, she thought dryly.
“This is for you, Phoenix,” Rhys confirmed, handing her the contraption as he picked up the spectacles for himself. “Hopefully this might help. And hopefully these tweezers will do. I, uh, could always go out and find some more – got a friend I might be able to borrow some off of – but I think time’s kinda important right now, so… yeah.”
“This’ll do for now, I think. We can at least try to get done what we can.” The woman set the item down and tied her hair back before placing the headgear on. “Tae, as always, tell us what we need to do inside of you and we’ll do it,” Phoenix continued, adjusting the rather unwieldy tool on her cranium.
“Yeah, and let me know what other tools and supplies we might need. Hopefully I’ve got most of it here already,” the man added.
Once the pair were geared up, they cleared out a space for them to work and set down a couple of long cloths with a few cups and containers on top of them. If there were small components that they needed to collect or put aside, they could do so without losing them. Before starting, Rhys also gathered a few other materials and supplies they may or may not need, just so that they were handy in the case that they did. When their setup was satisfactory, they each sat down on one side of the android and began to work on one arm each. They followed Tae’s instructions and guidance as they worked, using their own experience and expertise – admittedly, mostly Rhys’ – to fill in the gaps.
To say that it was excruciating work was an understatement. Somehow, it felt like every single muscle in her body was under strain: her back slowly curled forward, her neck tensed and craned to try and keep her head up or find the angle she needed. Her hips and legs grew sore from staying in one position too long, and even when she cycled through a few they all began to hurt. Then of course her arms, hands, and fingers began to hurt, too, from keeping herself steady as to not make any mistakes in her delicate work. And naturally her eyes and brain were aching after a time as well; in addition to the stress-related tension headache she’d had since losing, they were unbelievably strained while working with the tiny components. While Phoenix did take a few breaks – just a few minutes here and there, when her hands began to tremble or her head felt like it might explode – she pushed herself to keep working. Keep doing what she needed to. Time was precious, and they needed every second out of the rest of the week to get things done.
Phoenix wasn’t sure just how much time had passed before it seemed they had done all they could. But it must have been a while because she could see a new day’s sunshine starting to colour the sky, peeking through the gaps in the nearby skyscrapers to leak through her window. Nevertheless, once she completed the repairs – at least for the time being – she set the tweezers down, took off her headband, and lay down on the floor. Soon after Rhys sat back as well, leaning on his hands and sprawling his legs out in front of him. The woman placed her hands over her face, squeezing her eyes shut with a tired groan. “All right,” she said eventually. “See how they work and run some tests or whatever you need.” It was hard to even string together a proper sentence after all that. Especially as she had to go on to say, “And if we need to do more adjustments, we’ll do it.”
Hopefully things would work all right. But if it didn’t, she’d have to muster up the energy to get back to it. After all, there was no other option, was there?
When Tae’s words brought a smile to Phoenix's lips, he lit up too. That was all he wanted, and her smile justified what he did and always would. Even if getting rid of those lines of coding had future consequences, surely it would be worth it if it meant improving her mood during the hardest time of her life. After all, he existed to make her life better and that was all he wanted.
Perhaps it was because she smiled even wider, but Tae loved being so close to her. Physical contact was not a demand in his life, but he could tell that she was warm and he would be lying if he said that he did not want physical contact at times. Now was one of those times, and he would not have opposed more contact. In fact, Tae had glanced down at Phoenix's lips only a moment before she placed her hand on his cheek. Smiling a large closed mouth smile, Tae squeezed her hand in the only way he could, by every so slightly moving up his shoulder and turning his head so that her hand was gently trapped between them. It was the closest thing he could do to hug her at that moment.
Tae was looking in her eyes when she said her thanks with that little hiccup that seemed to imply that more tears were to come. He surely hoped not. Although, perhaps they were happy tears? Admittedly, if he were capable, this much positive contact would have likely made him cry too, so if that was the case, he would understand. She certainly looked happy despite the tears, and that was enough for now.
Once the touchy-feely moment passed, then the group actually started touching and feeling Tae although for practical reasons. Rhys, who was near ignored for the last few minutes, joined in at this point too. “That is ideal. I would not want to lose more of my artificial skin if it could be avoided.” Nevermind blending in, Tae did not want to be unpleasant to touch or hold.
Laughing lightly, Tae managed to make the smallest twitch of a shrug. “I think it would be wrong to expect the same standard as the one who made me. He surely makes more than everyone in this entire apartment does combined.” Or at least that is what Tae’s calculations implied since he did actually know the worth of everyone in this building. “What we are doing here will be more than enough though, so you don’t have to worry. I wouldn't be suggesting anything that was impossible. I know that the three of us can fix me up right and proper.”
“Let’s get started then!” Tae said, seemingly excited despite the daunting task ahead of them. Or perhaps he was just excited to have his arms back.
Tae was a patient teacher, taking his time to describe everything verbally and, when possible, visually. His eyes still worked fine so he was able to create projections to show them what they were looking for and what they needed to do. It was detailed work, but thankfully, it was the type of work that Tae could immediately tell if something was going wrong so they never went so far in the wrong directions that it could not be corrected right away.
For a robot, sitting in the same location was not a problem in the least bit. He had no muscles. Still, Rhys and Phoenix were, so despite the stress of the matter, he often tried to push them to take ten-minute breaks and to have a snack. It didn't often work, but he tried. Eventually, Tae’s arms worked well enough that he could move in better positions and, when one had been fixed, he could actually do some of the work with his other arm personally. That alone was a blessing because, by the time the first arm was fixed, Tae could tell that the pair were in a rough state.
By the time that the sun had risen, Tae was feeling pretty good. He ran a quick body scan and found no major issues, although he would personally need to do some tweaking just to adjust some of the tightness in a few spots. The problem was, as Tae stood up and started rotating and swinging his arms, he could tell that something was off. What could it be though? He was moving his arms and nothing extreme was going on, yet he couldn't shake the feeling that something was out of place and it wasn't his arms. Perhaps he was just paranoid? He didn't know that he was capable of that emotion, but perhaps worry was sinking in now that everyone else in the room had calmed down. It was easier to be a mess after everyone else had calmed down.
Still, although Tae spent a bit more time testing his arms than may be necessary, Tae eventually gave Phoenix and Rhys and confident thumbs up. They looked so tired, and there was no reason to mention something that he didn't even know how to fix or identify. “It’s great! I’m still going to make a handful of small adjustments, loosen a screw here, tighten one there, but that is easy work that I can do while you guys rest. You guys worked so hard today and have been up for nearly 24 hours now.” Apparently, now that his arms worked, Tae was back to being a mother hen who was more than content to do everything himself and to serve. He had missed helping despite only being useless for a few hours.
“Both of you go get ready for bed,” Tae said, ordering them like a mother to her children. “I’ll clean up here and have the couch ready for you, Rhys, by the time both of you are done.” This was non-negotiable, especially when Tae walked over to Phoenix and offered her his hand so that he could pull her up and immediately push her towards the restroom where she could wash up a bit and brush her teeth before bed. Based on his hand grip and his strength, he seemed to be back to normal even though his arms visibly caught once and a while.
Once Phoenix was following instructions and Rhys was waiting his turn, Tae got to work doing what he said he was going to. He moved and folded many of the sheets they laid down, only keeping a handful spread open around Tae’s normal spot where one could assume he was going to fix his arms at. He also moved some of the dirty tools to the sink where he gave them a quick rinse before leaving them in the sink to be washed later. Tae was using his long limbs to his advantage, moving about the apartment as quickly as he could so that he could have all of this done before anyone could interject. If Rhys even tried, Tae would protest but not force him to obey. That is, of course, until Phoenix returned from the bathroom. Once that happened Tae would not let Rhys refuse to get ready for bed. Tired or not, hygiene was important. And, of course, while Rhys was in the bathroom, Tae fixed up the couch in a manner that was far too neat for a couch and for a bed that would be laid on in moments.
It was around 6 am by the time this was all over with, and Tae was mentally calculating what would be a good time for them to wake up. “Alright, so, what do you guys say to waking up around 3 pm? You guys need sleep, so 9 hours should suffice.” Tae was walking around the room now too, pulling the curtains on all of the windows and trying to make this room feel like it was still night time. It only kinda worked. I’ll have breakfast ready and waiting for you at that time, so please try to deal with the hunger until then, okay?” Hunger could be fixed easily, a lack of sleep could not.
Tae did not mean to be controlling or pushy, but he found the state natural for him since these humans were so fragile and stubborn. They needed the push to take care of themselves, and he was happy to be that push. After all, he knew that they needed it even if they disagreed.
Although Tae was his old self, he was not just the bubbly self that Phoenix had grown accustomed to since Lai.pro was installed. He was also his old self in the way that the ends, for the most part, justified the means. He would not kill anyone, Tae was not that far gone, but seeing her in so much pain and failing so one too many times was enough to make Tae realize that what they were doing now was not enough. Working night to night, getting just enough money to justify continuing in the hopes of an unknown future… that was not going to work. Phoenix ‘s health would suffer if she stayed so stressed, and Tae would not have that.
So, once the pair were fast asleep and Tae did the last tweeking for his arms, Tae stood up from his spot and left the apartment alone for the first time. Immediately things felt different. Tae was no longer just following someone around like a puppy, or rather, like the dozens of other PETs he saw on the street that were trotting behind their masters or perched on their shoulders. Except for service PETs, PETs were not supposed to wander around without their owners for the security of the PETs (not getting lost or broken) and because most PETs were not ready for the complete autonomy that being alone granted.
Tae was though, so he wanted the streets in his dark, long-sleeved clothing without concern or any sign of confusion. After all, his brain was a map, and even if it wasn't, he was tall enough to see above most people’s heads and/or shoulders. Tae did not necessarily know where he was going, but he knew that he was looking for work and that he would find it soon. It didn't matter how he knew it or how his feet knew where in the city to take him.
Tae ended up standing in front of a construction-like site a few blocks away from the apartment. It was one of the only places that Tae could find that would accept walk-in help, mainly because they needed bodies just to lug things from place to place. So it was easy and legal, although Tae could guess that he would find better paying and illegal things to do soon enough. For now though, this simple, mindless construction job could work. After all, his body could do this while his mind searched for better opportunities.
It took some convincing though. Not that it was surprising. After all, Tae knew that he appeared to be nothing more than a lanky, young, almost gothic boy with perfect features. That was not exactly the go-to person for hard labor such as construction. Still, Tae managed to prove his worth by picking up a 70 concrete block with ease. Once they saw that, then Tae was able to put in a few hours of easy work without complaint from the boss or from his temporary coworkers.
In fact, if anything, the group complained that he was moving too fast and had too much energy. With one arm he could lift up an object with one arm that most men would need two hands to lift.
Unfortunately, the job was messy and long. And, when lunchtime came around for the men, Tae had to run off to their surprise. They were not upset since he had been unexpectedly useful and even knowledgeable about their task, but they were confused about why the enthusiastic stranger was taking only a half days worth of pay. But when Tae said that he had someone at home he had to take care of, they understood and invited the PET back. He did not accept or refuse their offer.
By the time Tae got home, he realized fully just how dusty he was partially because of today’s work and partially because of last night's fights. Robots did not sweat or have bodily odors like humans so changing clothing was not as unsanitary to him as it would be to a human, but he still liked to stay clean. Besides, he needed to look proper so that Phoenix would not know that he snuck out.
Tae also took a portion of his pay today to buy some food on the way home. Nothing major, and certainly nothing that Phoenix would notice was different. After all, he was the one who had a catalog of everything in her kitchen, not her. If anything, she would likely just assume that Tae found these ingredients in the back of her cupboards somewhere… or at least that was the hope.
Tae truly was very comfortable with lying, even to Phoenix.
So, after gently unpacking the items from the bag and stashing the bag in with the other pile of leftover shopping bags, Tae rushed to the bathroom where he quickly washed his clothing and, to the best of his ability, cleaned himself as well. There was only so much he could do without getting water deep into his limbs though. He really was a holey mess at this point, but it was fine. He could be nothing more than a skeleton and still want to work for Phoenix’s happiness.
As Tae was trying to clean himself though, he found his neck twitching and locking in place unexpectedly. He could not move it, nor could he identify why he could not move it. For a good thirty seconds, Tae’s head was stuck at a forty-five-degree rotation and then it was fine, as if nothing happened.
Although strange, this was nothing to hesitate on for long. After all, it was 2:30 and Tae had to make sure that he was presentable before he woke everyone up. Also, as he had promised, he needed lunch to be ready for everyone. That strange head kink was likely just another symptom of his many damages. Nothing to worry about, although if he could get some refined oil or the like to grease his neck joints then that might be for the best. In fact, realizing that Tae was going to smell of shampoo, Tae actually did apply some oil on some of his stiff joints just to give himself a non-suspicious smell. Besides, he kinda needed it.
All of this was done in near silence, Tae being very slow and careful so as not to wake up Rhys or Phoenix. Even as Tae started to cook, every chop with the knife was slow and steady and he practically put his fingers into the boiling water so as not to make a loud splash sound. Today he was making stir fry. Tae didn't know exactly why that was why he decided to make, but it involved just throwing a lot of random but complementary things together, so it would be harder to identify whether or not Phoenix had them in the first place.
Eventually though, the smell from the food started to fill the house and there was nothing Tae could do to stave off the sound of the meat and vegetables sizzling in the pan. Tae’s sense of smell and taste were his worst senses. In fact, Tae could not taste at all, but he could smell a bit. Specific scents were more identifiable but most of the time it was just categories. For example, Tae could identify the smell of flowers but not differentiate between different flowers; they all registered the same to him.
So for cooking, Tae had to rely almost exclusively on his nose and recipes to decide if things were going well. Was it too spicy? He couldn't even tell that because his nose was not sensitive enough to realize that a little spice and a lot of spice smells different. Just like flowers, this was all the same too. At least Tae could be confident that the coffee he made would fit human taste buds once it cooled down a bit.
Eventually, three came around and Tae went around waking everyone up. He was the gentle sort, quietly stirring Rhys awake with his voice while with Phoenix Tae went a step further and gently whispered to coax her out of her dreams while he gently swiped a few strands of hair from her exhausted face. Mainly he just said her name, but Tae did mix in a few “lunch is ready” and “your coffee is going to get cold” in there just to incentivize her movement a bit more.
It was only after Tae served everyone their breakfast and took a seat at the table himself that he got to business.
“Are you two awake enough to talk?” Tae asked, trying to be sure that they could focus and were emotionally ready for serious talk. What he wanted to talk about was clear; what they were going to do tonight.
"I got an invitation this morning," Tae started, pulling up the message and projecting the image through his eyes so that everyone could see it. It was a text from an unknown number and an unknown PET. It was just an address, and that was it. There were no other words in the entire message, but the fact that they were able to send it to Tae without mutually agreeing to share PET information was abnormal and displayed some level of intelligence that proved that the sender was skilled and that this was intentional. "I looked up an address. It's a building, a gym that got shut down last year and is still semi-officially active as a meeting site. This paced used to be used for wrestling competitions, so theoretically, there is plenty of space for bot fighting and maybe legit."
Of course, there was no guarantee of anything here. This place may be better than their last joint or it may be worse. Hell, it may even be a lie or an accident. They had no way of knowing. "I had a hard time tracing back the text. It seems like they routed it through several other systems so that I would not be able to find the source of the sender. I could do it eventually, but we don't have time, I imagine."
"I say we go," Tae suggested, stating his opinion quickly and without the normal reservation or submission that he normally would. "We can always check it out and then leave if it does not suit us. No harm, no foul!"
Phoenix, in all honesty, surprised herself. She’d brought a few of her boyfriends around Rhys in passing, and there were a couple occasions in which they spent a substantial amount of time together. But never did she allow herself to display such affection in front of one of her friends. She displayed a vulnerability and a softness that even she didn’t think she was capable in this situation. For her, it was natural to have her shields up and her sword at the ready: always ready to attack, and always making every effort to keep herself safe; hidden, even. To find herself so close to Tae, with her hand resting gently on his face, and having no issues with the PET affectionately nuzzling into her palm (and all in front of Rhys!) was… unexpected, to say the least.
Ultimately, she was grateful for the fact that Rhys seemed to brush it off. If she surprised herself, she could only imagine how her friend felt in this situation. Even if they were human it would have surely been awkward for him to ‘third wheel’ them. How strange it must have been to watch her act this way with Tae. Thinking about it brought warmth to her cheeks, but the woman did her best to brush it off and focus on the task at hand. If her friend wasn’t going to bring it up, she certainly wasn’t going to make things weird by talking about it herself.
It was definitely a good time to move on. Tae agreed that preserving the integrity of his skin was optimal; and later he even laughed, which was a welcome sound to Phoenix’s ears. She even managed to chuckle a bit herself although, thanks to her fatigue and lingering distress, it came out more like a short, quiet scoff. Nevertheless, she appreciated his reassurance and his apparent faith in their capabilities. To be fair, it didn’t inspire quite as much confidence as it would have pre-Lai.pro, but even if Tae was speaking more out of ‘emotion’ rather than a calculated fact, it was nice to hear. It was certainly more motivating than him telling them that, well, maybe they could get him fixed up.
Of course, just the fact that he seemed to be in better spirits than he was a short time ago was comforting as well. The fear and worry festering within her wouldn’t be dispelled until this mess was all over and done with; but seeing that at least Tae was in a good mood helped give her the motivation to press forward despite her despair. His chipper enthusiasm felt like a lifesaver in the middle of a raging ocean. In the grand scheme of things it was small, but it was more than enough to help keep her head above water right now.
With their morale boosted, they begun their work. If Tae was not sentient (or simply not conscious) they would surely have been lost in the unbelievably complex network of wires and components. His guidance was patient and thorough, assisted by projected images and diagrams to help them navigate his inner workings even better. What’s more was that he could provide instant feedback on whether they’d messed up – which they did quite a fair bit – and help them remedy the situation immediately. As Phoenix worked, one of the many thoughts that passed through her mind was that this truly felt like brain surgery. Incredibly intricate work on complicated, delicate materials that she didn’t even fully understand. Patients undergoing brain surgery were often awake, too, weren’t they?
An interesting parallel, albeit a somewhat useless and extraneous musing. Such things provided Phoenix and Rhys with a touch of mental respite, at least. While they did take a breather now and then, the pair did not opt to do so as much as Tae wanted them to. This was not helpful for their well-being, but it was certainly conducive to their work. Eventually, one of Tae’s arms was functional enough so that he could assist in a more hands-on way himself. This was probably the biggest help in their whole endeavor: not only were they limited in their knowledge, they were limited in their physical capabilities, too. They were both mentally and physically exhausted, running on the fumes of their fumes.
When their work was done (for the time being, at least), Tae ran a scan. Once Phoenix’s eyes felt a little less like they were going to fall out of her head, she opened them and lifted her hands away from her face. Her gaze followed him as he rose to his feet and began to move his arms. With her mouth tightened into a firm, uneasy line, she watched him silently as he assessed the condition of his appendages. She knew that their repair simply couldn’t have been perfect, but she hoped it was good. Not just adequate, or satisfactory, but actually decent. As they’d decided, it was critical to have Tae in the best shape he could be in. So, as much as she felt like she might collapse, she would muster up the energy to keep going if they really had to.
However, a cool wave of relief washed over Phoenix as he flashed his thumbs approvingly at them. She let out an audible sigh, letting her arms flop to the floor on either side of her. “Thank God!” Some small adjustments were fine. Easy work was no issue. And Tae would probably be better at it than either of them at this point, anyway. Although some small part of Phoenix might have wondered if he was being truthful, on the whole she was just much too tired to care.
“An all-nighter, huh?” With a soft thud, Rhys also let himself lie on the ground. “Didn’t even realize it. Crazy what adrenaline does to you, isn’t it?”
They must have looked like a couple of kid who thoroughly tired themselves out after a long day out. And Tae took on the motherly task of ordering them to bed. Normally Phoenix would have insisted on helping to clean and get things set up – or better yet, do it herself – but at this moment she was more than happy to let the battery-operated being handle the task. The more she lay on the ground the harder it was to even move from her spot, let alone do anything else. Luckily for her, Tae approached her and helped her to her feet. He even directed her to the bathroom so that she could wash up and properly wash her face, as she really should. Unfortunately, she was too tired to note anything about the function or strength of his arms, but she didn’t realize anything was off which, in its own way, was an unconscious evaluation of the work they’d all done together.
Once the door to the bathroom was shut, Phoenix took a second to look at herself in the mirror. To say she looked like shit felt like an understatement. There were dark circles beneath her eyes, visible even through her makeup. Though her foundation and concealer were definitely in rough shape after all of the sweat and tears she’d shed, so that wasn’t saying much. Squinting, she peered in at the small particles that clumped and caked on her skin. “Gross,” she muttered, before quickly getting to work on washing it all off.
It was refreshing to cleanse her face, and just barely invigorating enough for her to muster enough energy to shower. It was all a fairly quick production – at least compared to her usual routine – but at the end of it all, Phoenix felt infinitely better. Like a normal person again. By that point, though, she was more than ready for bed and wasted no time in exiting the bathroom.
Rhys, who had offered to help Tae, couldn’t bring himself to argue with him. And so, he let himself be shepherded into the bathroom to get cleaned up. When the two of them were freshened up for bed, Tae laid out the timeline for their rest. “That sounds fine to me,” Phoenix said, to which Rhys grunted – already half-asleep, it seemed – in agreement. “It would be great if you could do all of that for us.” The woman lay down in her bed when the room was as dark as it could be and let out a small sigh. As much as she wanted to keep going, she was painfully aware of how useless she and Rhys were in this condition. If only they were like Tae, and just needed a bit of charging before getting back on the road.
They weren’t though, and Phoenix quickly felt the pull of sleep tugging on her consciousness. But she managed to murmur one las thing before she drifted off: “Thanks, Tae…”
*~*~*
When Tae arrived back at the apartment, he would find the humans snoring away, enraptured in a deep, deep sleep. Even if he hadn’t been so quiet, the pair probably would not have woken up. Their utter exhaustion was evident, and their bodies were using the opportunity to rest to its fullest. As such, neither of them woke up on their own accord and it was only when Tae roused them from sleep that they returned to the waking world. “Mmn… thanks,” Rhys mumbled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes as he let out a loud yawn.
While the man on the couch slowly got himself reoriented, Phoenix was awoken by the soft sound of Tae’s voice in her ears. Her eyes slowly fluttered open and she squinted momentarily as he brushed a few loose hairs away from her forehead. It took her a moment to figure out who was talking to her and what was happening, but when she was awake enough to get a grasp on the words Tae was saying and how sweetly he was waking her up, a smile came across her face. “Ah… okay,” she said quietly, her voice rather hoarse from apparent dehydration.
Despite their lengthy sleep, the two still seemed to need some time to get back to their fully conscious selves. A consequence of their long, hard, night, most likely. Phoenix in particular took a few more minutes than usual to just sit at the side of her bed and find her way back to reality again. She’d had the type of sleep where she knew she dreamt, but she could only recall the slightest bits and pieces. A face here, a vague notion of an event there. They were dreams she wanted to remember, but the more she tried to figure out what had happened, the more they seemed to fade.
Eventually, though, the severity of her real-life problems took the forefront, and Phoenix was spurred from her bed. After quickly splashing her face in the bathroom, Rhys followed suit, and the three convened over their meal. With their plates full of delicious-smelling food in front of them, Tae asked if they were in a good mindset to talk.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” Phoenix replied, tucking into the stir fry. She wasn’t really that okay, but relative to last night she was fine. In the right headspace to discuss their next steps, at the very least. And next to her, Rhys agreed.
The humans filled their empty bellies in silence, listening carefully to Tae as he informed them of an invitation he received. Although it shouldn’t have been that surprising that he got one, considering what had happened last night, the speed at which it came was a bit unexpected. Things moved fast in the bot fighting world, Phoenix supposed. That aside, her gaze shifted to the projection that appeared in the air before them. There wasn’t much to see, though; there was no identifying information to speak of – just an address. By Tae’s report it could have been a possible bot fighting site, but he didn’t have any confirming information one way or another.
However, he did confirm that the text was sent through complex means, which made sense given the fact that they bypassed the standard PET agreement for information exchange. “Yeah, I don’t think tracing the sender is a priority right now,” Phoenix agreed before taking a thoughtful sip of coffee. There were better uses of Tae’s time and energy, and in this sort of dire situation it may be worth it for them just to take a chance and check it out.
The android was on board for this idea, an announced it quite promptly. “We could,” the woman said, nodding. “Though there’s no way to say for sure that whoever is waiting for us will just let us leave if we want.” There was much they didn’t know about this, including the sender’s motives. At least with Octaryon they had some background information, and a general idea of what they were getting into. With this, they would just be stepping in pretty much completely blind. And even though Tae was capable of defending them – even in his condition – there was still a risk. What if there were more people – or PETs – than he could handle at once?
“That’s true,” Rhys chimed in next to her. “But I think it’s still worth a shot. The anonymous invitation, the use of proxies, the overriding of typical PET protocols – it all points to pretty sophisticated stuff, you know?” He twirled his fork around on his plate. “Since it’s at a place that might be for bot fighting, it could just be a bigger and better ring. A step up from last night, you know?”
Phoenix looked to him and nodded a little before her gaze shifted back to Tae. She had her fears and her reservations about throwing him back into action after last night, but she knew what he wanted to do. And at a certain point, her word couldn’t eclipse his desires. Not anymore. On top of all that, she herself was quickly losing the luxury of choice. Time was ticking closer and closer to their deadline, and there was still a lot of money she needed to round up. So, although she had her worries, and although she would have preferred to play things safe, she knew what she had to do.
With a small sigh, she rose from the table and shared her decision. “All right then. Let’s get ready to go.”
*~*~*
As they prepared themselves for another potentially long night out, Phoenix didn’t notice any of the changes in her apartment or with Tae. Even if she hadn’t been so preoccupied with all of the other events going on, he had disguised his activities quite well. And soon the three of them were piled into Rhys’ car again, this time with a few more supplies to conduct repairs than they previously brought with them. On top of that, Phoenix also packed a small can of bear spray she’d stashed away for her own self-defense purposes, just in case. Rhys hadn’t been terribly concerned, but he conceded to Phoenix’s concerns and kept a Swiss Army knife on his pocket anyway.
It was close to 4:30 when they actually left Phoenix’s apartment and headed off. The meeting place in question was actually somewhat far away on the outskirts of town. It was on the border between a lower-class suburban neighbourhood and an industrial area; perhaps the former gym had been some odd attempt at gentrifying the area. Evidently it failed, and as they drove through the factories, warehouses, and run-down houses, Phoenix could see why. This was not an especially ‘dangerous’ part of town, but it certainly wasn’t considered nice by any standards. As they drew closer her hopes of seeing a higher-class ring began to waver, but she tried to keep positive.
About half an hour after their departure, they arrived. The building sat at the end of a small, dead-end side street. There were a few others on the road as well, but they were peculiar to say the least. They seemed like offices, and they were all in good shape; however, they were not marked and there were only a few cars in each of their parking lots. Phoenix peered suspiciously at them as they passed, but was forced to forget about them as Rhys stopped his car in front of their destination.
It was a large facility. The gym’s sign (‘Horizon Fitness’) still hung above the entranceway, though the windows and doors were boarded and chained shut. The bushes and grass outside were quite overgrown and unkempt, in stark contrast to the other decent-looking properties on the street. At first glance, one would think that either they had the wrong place or Tae’s intel about it being semi-officially active was incorrect. However, on closer inspection they would notice a small path that ran along the side of the building. One that, despite having some tall grass lining its edges, was certainly maintained to some extent.
The oddity of it all wasn’t especially comforting, but they had come too far to back down now. Unbuckling her seatbelt, Phoenix adjusted her wig in the mirror before turning to her friend. “Okay, Rhys. I think that you should stay in the car… stay on the lookout for anything strange and get in touch with Tae if you notice something. With you here we can also make a quicker getaway if things get down to it. That all right?”
The man nodded. “Sure, that’s fine.” There seemed to be the slightest hint of disappointment in his voice but he knew this was no time to argue. And so, after she and Tae made sure they were all ready, Phoenix exited the car and walked with him towards the building.
Other than the sound of passing cars in the distance, it was eerily quiet as they approached. Phoenix paused at the entrance, trying to catch some glimpse inside, before continuing along once she could see nothing. They followed the path around to the side of the building, and when they turned the corner she could see an open set of doors near the end of the wall. With a deep breath, she pressed onward, her heartbeat steadily quickening in her chest.
She did her best to tread as quietly along the pavement as she could until she stopped again at the open doors. With a quick glance at Tae and peered around the corner and looked inside.
It was a vast, open room with a wrestling ring at its center. Only a single set of fluorescent lights hanging above the ring were turned on, but with the outdoor lighting streaming in she could see that it was considerably less dilapidated than the gym’s exterior. There was a still functioning clock on one wall, the concrete floors were clean, and the bleachers that lined three of the four sides of the room seemed in passable condition. And on the farthest set of bleachers she quickly noticed a man sitting near the top with a rather large lizard-like PET at his side. Their gazes seemed to fall on each other at the same time, and he soon called out to her.
“Ah, you made it.” His voice echoed throughout the room; low and gruff, the sound of someone who’d done a lot of smoking in his life. “Come in, please.” The man’s tone was firm and authoritative without being aggressive, and she caught a tinge of a Southern drawl.
Phoenix glanced cautiously to either side of the entrance as she walked forward. As far as she could tell there was no one else in this room, but she couldn’t be sure about those beyond it. She didn’t want to venture too far in, however, and stopped a short distance away from the ring. The woman stood there, a silent indication that she refused to go no farther. She watched as the man stood and made his descent from the bleachers. His shoes clanked gently on the metal as he walked, and the claws of his PET scratched against it as well while it followed him.
“You must pardon my rather unorthodox invitation.” He made his way onto even ground and around the ring towards her. “I’m a man of caution, you see. And from what I gather at first glance, you are a woman of the same nature.” Once he was closer, Phoenix could see that he was an older man: probably in his early sixties, judging by the grey that lined his dark brown hair. A neatly groomed moustache shifted as he spoke, but his square jawline was clean shaven. He was a tall man – over six feet for sure – with a broad, substantial build. Judging by his pressed and tailored suit and the gold watch that caught the light as he walked, he was well-off. Light blue eyes shifted from her to Tae and back, observing them from behind rimless glasses. The man stopped about six feet away, and settled his hands in his pockets. The PET at his side – a Komodo dragon, it seemed – settled at his feet, though its powerful legs looked poised to move at a word’s notice.
“So I do thank you for taking the chance to come all this way and meet me here.” He dipped his head, appreciative. “I understand you must be uneasy at this time, so allow me to answer a couple questions that must be on your mind right now, Miss Nyx. My name’s Carter Harrington, and I’ve invited you here because I saw a curious little video of your Tae from last night.”
Phoenix remained on guard, her posture tense. “All right, and?”
A laugh; he seemed amused by her prickliness more than anything. “And I just wanted to satisfy some curiosities, if you would be so kind as to indulge me.” There was a twinkle in those eyes, just barely visible through the glare in his lenses. “Seeing as you two were playing around in some low-ranking bot fights, I can only assume you’re looking for some extra finances. So if it’s money you’re looking for, well… I’m sure I can help you with that one way or another.”
It was a relief when Phoenix and Rhys did not fight him, for once, about going to bed and being taken care of. Although he loved them, his humans could be rather stubborn sometimes. Phoenix especially was harder to handle than Rhys. Of course, even with emotion Tae knew it was not his place to force issues, but that did not mean he did not like to be listened to when he was confident that he was right.
It was even more of a relief when, many hours later, Tae came home from his independant escapades to find them blissfully unaware of what their PET had been doing. Yes, it was nothing illegal, but it was against the rules. Hopefully Tae would not get too far into the darkness to make him unforgivable.
In fact, Tae felt rather strange moving around by himself in the daylight. He could not decide what the problem was though. Was it the fact that he was alone when he was more or less told not to do that, or was the problem that he was doing it but in the day? Something inside of Tae made him feel like being alone in public was abnormal, not just with Phoenix, but in his past too. His memory was gone and there was no clear warnings going off like whenever he approached a police station or hospital, but it was like what Tae imagined a distant dream would feel like. You know something is there, but you can’t see or even put words to the sensation.
Whatever the oddity was though, it made Tae move faster when he was alone as if towards a purpose. It was almost a relief when he got home simply because it meant that his job was done and now he could go back to taking orders, or at least everyday tasks like waking them up. He could get back into the routine... or at least as routine as one could be while trying to pay off criminals from harming another.
Honestly, this would be much easier if she simply would let Tae kill or shatter the thugs threatening her father.
The morning came without incident, although Tae was worried the entire time that his crime or rather side job would be revealed. That would have been the worst outcome, but it did not come, so who was Tae to complain? He got what he wanted, and more importantly, Phoenix got what she wanted although she did not know it.
Eventually though came the conversation regarding the message Tae got mid-day. He had not expected it since he had not willingly given out his own contact information, but that being said, he did not have the highest hacking requirements. After all, very few would know that he was a walking cell phone, so who would bother trying to hack him? No one focused their attention on trying to hack another human. However, perhaps now that he was open about his true species, he should focus a bit more on his data and contact security. It would not be ideal if he was taken over and/or hacked to the point that he harmed someone.
However, just because it was unwelcome did not mean it was not worth value. So, as Rhys defended his stance on pursuing the lead, Tae merely nodded his head in open but subdued agreement.
Eventually they decided that they would pursue the interest, just as he wanted to. Rewards often required risk, and based on his mathematical calculations, it was more likely that they would profit from this interaction than not. Tae knew his strength and could account for that. He would win even when faced against a violent threat… or at least the average fighting estimation was success. He figured he would win more than he would lose. After all, every time he lost he learned, so he would win more in the future.
It was strange to go to that gym with Phoenix. Honestly, Tae did not want her to come inside with him. “I would rather you stay in the car as well, at least at first,” Tae had said during the job but did not push.
He did however make sure that his body was always very close to Phoenix. It was a miracle that they did not step on each other. In fact, by the way Tae kept leaning and speeding up, it was pretty clear that he wanted to be walking in the front just in case there was any kind of trap in place or gunman. He was uncomfortable and nervous, but only for her since he wasn't really at risk due to being an object and not truly alive. As TAe kept saying, he could always be repaired back to more or less how he was originally.
The inside of the building was about how Tae expected it to be, although when he heard the phrase gym he rarely thought about wrestling. He had foolishly expected equipment for cardio and strength, not a place where people could show off their strength and cardio. It was far too quiet to be a bot ring though since there was no clashing of metal or shouting here. If that ring was going to be used, it would not be in the way the other rings had been over the past week. It was cleaner in here too, not as abandoned as thought either.
What was actually of interest though was the man on the bleachers across the room sitting next to his PET, a komodo dragon. That was a very expensive PET to purchase. That model was not only large but high tech, having more amenities than most average PETs did. No wonder it had managed to bypass Tae’s security. Aspects of the creature’s interior likely mirrored his own.
At the sound of the man’s voice, Tae did not flinch but he did tighten his fist in preparation for trouble. He did not like this at all and continued to stick to Phoenix as they walked. It certainly didn't help when he started to approach, the claws of his PET scraping the ground in a way that suggested the creature had been altered. For legal reasons, normal komodo dragon models had claws that were always dull specifically so that it would not cut humans.
Looking at the man, he was taller than most humans. In fact, he looked the size of Tae but bulkier. Didn't matter though, Tae knew he was stronger. This man was not only human, but an older human. Tae could crush him if need be. Perhaps the komodo dragon was thinking similar thoughts considering its stance; Tae moved slightly himself to better prepare for the komodo dragon’s attack, should it happen.
Carter Harrington. As soon as that name was said Tae’s mind was flying through the internet. Easily he found out some basic information. He was a CEO, highly wealthy, highly connected to other big conglomerates, and his group specializes in manufacturing companies. The conglomerate had done a lot of work in this area, which was perhaps why he was inside of here even though his name was not listed as the owner of the establishment. More than that though and some useless personal details, Tae did not find out much. He could tell that the man was loaded though based on his bank account information Tae was also looking into. His address, phone, and PET numbers were found too.
Just in case, Tae sent “The CEO Carter Harrington is here. He’s asking about Tae and offering to help us with money. Will keep you updated” to Rhys. The message was designed as if he had not written it himself since technically Tae was supposed to be Phoenix’s cell phone.
At the mention of money, Tae glared a bit but kept still and blank in the face. He doubted that this man knew the extent of Tae’s intelligence and autonomy, so he did not want to risk showing him that. So even though Tae wanted to lean down and whisper his findings to Phoenix, he kept still and just watched what was going down. What else could a tool do but that?
Still, money was an attractive offer and immediately made Tae at least want to hear the man out. After all, Tae had wanted to come here just in case there was more money to be made. Perhaps this was their shot? But of course there was the problem that the man had not shared the how behind any of this. Was he just going to hand over some money? He had enough to throw around, but Tae had to doubt that. Humans, although wonderful, did have a habit of selfishness especially when in power. It made no sense to Tae when the rich kept their money to themselves since their actions became so very impractical especially when faced with homelessness and starvation.
So free money was likely out, which left a favor or a job. Did this man want Phoenix or rather Tae to do something for him? To be honest, Tae was not opposed. Just this morning he broke a household rule to make money, and if this man wanted Tae to break a real rule, it would only be the latest of his ever growing list. Tae had beaten a man before and although he had felt bad about it before, he was certain that he would not feel that way now and instead would feel a sense of justice for a job well done. Tae could also hack into the police database again, although exactly the why behind that would matter. Either way, Tae was willing to corrupt himself further for money, but at the end of the day it was up to this Harrington person to give the job in the first place and for Phoenix to accept it. Tae was an observer, not a participant in this situation.
One had to wonder though. Would Phoenix even admit that she was doing this for money? She was proud, after all, and this man was indeed still very suspicious despite knowing his name now. Perhaps instead she would lie and claim that she just wanted to show off her creation; that would be believable since, if you could create the first fully human looking PET, you would want to brag a bit. Although, from that logic, she should be taking it to the D.O. PET Corporation, not some random warehouses or parking lots. She’d be rich in minutes of she went there.
Funny how she could tell that Tae was tense, even though he didn’t have a muscle in his body. If he were a human, a flesh-and-blood being like she was, it would make more sense. Fear, apprehension, anxiety, and the adrenaline that came with these fight responses seeped into every aspect of a person’s being, from the movements to the way they spoke. But even though Tae may have felt these emotions – though whether or not it was in the exact same way was still hard for Phoenix to understand – he did not have the chemical reaction to go with it. And yet, she could still tell that he was on high alert. His body was close to hers as they walked (almost a little too close, really), and when the stranger spoke, his posture seemed to grow tighten along with his curled fist.
Or maybe she was just projecting onto Tae. Or seeing him as more human than he really was. Phoenix didn’t really know anymore.
But it was just a passing idea, an ephemeral observation that dissipated from her mind as the man advanced. When he introduced himself, Phoenix had no doubt that Tae jumped right onto his name. He probably already found a pile of information by the time that very thought occurred to her. And for a split second she considered looking over at him, to perhaps try and exchange a look that might give her a clue as to what he’d found. Even if it was just something that might indicate how cautious she needed to be here. But she quickly squashed the notion before she could act on it, even reflexively. Tae was not supposed to be who he was. She had to remember that, right now, Tae was still just an android; a machine. Not her friend or her equal.
So she held her gaze steady, opting to keep her guard up for now. However, when Carter shared his presumptions she faltered, albeit ever so slightly. A tiny flinch, a subtle, subconscious scowl at being read so easily. But Phoenix’s steely expression recovered swiftly, and she held the man in her cool gaze for a few silent moments. Surely, Tae was considering her possible answers next to her, but they would have to stay with him for now. Admittedly, after all they had been through these past few days, she had already gotten used to falling back on Tae and Rhys by default, at least in situations like these. Every place she had stepped into, every circumstance she’d found herself in was uncharted territory. She didn’t know much about how to handle these underground realms, or even how to fight. All she was able to do, really, was stand around, put on her acting cap, and help fix up Tae when all was over.
But now this was all her. For now, at least. And Phoenix would be lying through her teeth if she said she wasn’t nervous. After all, it felt like she was starting to wade into deeper and deeper waters; ones that were starting to pull her in, tugging her farther and farther away from safe shores. She knew, though, that she could only go forward at this point. And she knew that this was not the time or the place to start trying out the helpless damsel schtick, or to get comfortable falling back on her companions. She’d felt helpless, right? Frustrated at her own inability to do anything? Well, here was her chance to step up and handle her shit. Because all of this, at the end of the day, was her mess. Her cross to bear.
Phoenix breathed in deeply through her nostrils – a breath to calm her down that she let out in what she hoped might seem like a soft, unamused sigh. She tilted her head slightly, crossing her arms as her gaze still bore into Harrington’s aging features. “Information for money, is it? … Let’s start with what you want to know, and then we’ll see about making any deals.” She thought about refuting his suggestion that she was looking for money, but thought against it for now. It felt safer to neither confirm nor deny until the situation became a little clearer. The less information she gave him, the less he had to work with, right? She’d tell herself that, anyway.
All her words got in response, though, was another laugh. While the man was unfazed, she had to muster her focus to keep herself looking composed while her heartbeat thudded away madly in her chest. Phoenix could tell he was rich, and judging by his presence and demeanour, his fortunes probably didn’t just fall into his lap. He had the command and charisma of a businessman; someone who was no stranger to negotiations and making transactions. She knew right away that he was a different world from her, a higher class she could never even dream of reaching on her own accord. But now that her nerves were on fire, alight with anxiety, and his were so obviously calm and collected, the gap between them was even more pronounced.
She hoped he didn’t see the bobbing of her throat as she swallowed some of her nervousness down. If he did, he did not seem to care, as he continued on rather nonchalantly, his voice almost melodic with the remnants of his laughter. “I can’t say that I blame you for taking such a serious stance right away, considering the admittedly suspicious invitation I sent you. I do apologize for setting things up in such a way, but discretion is a must for me, you see. However, it doesn’t mean we have to keep things so rigid and frosty. Think of this as getting to know a new friend. Simply making each other’s acquaintance.” He motioned towards the bleachers behind him with the wave of a hand. “Would you be more comfortable if we had a seat and continued our chat there?”
Phoenix narrowed her gaze slightly before she shook her head slowly. “No, thank you. This is just fine.” Frankly, having this obviously powerful man insist on being relaxed and casual did not put her at ease in the slightest. Quite the opposite, really. The woman made no efforts to hide her unwavering caution either, but Harrington didn’t seem particularly distraught over it.
“Alright. Then stand we shall.” His hands found their way into the pockets of his trousers, where they rested comfortably. “Well then, I suppose we can start by answering your question.” Carter shifted his gaze away from Phoenix to study her companion at her side. “I’d first like to know how you came in possession of Tae.” The man’s lips came together, the ensuing silence a wordless indication that, that was all he intended to say for now.
The quiet between them lingered for a moment as his eyes met Phoenix’s again, watching her as she thought about her answer. Her jaw clenched slightly, as if ensuring her mouth was kept shut until she properly thought over her answer. She could tell a lie, saying it was a friend-of-a-friend, or that she bought it, but that could force her to begin spinning a web of lies. Like what friend? How could an obvious nobody like her afford something (someone) like Tae? And she sure as hell couldn’t say she built him, or that she knew someone else who did. Sooner or later, Harrington would undoubtedly want names she wouldn’t be able to give him. But, was it better to at least try lying? The worst was that she got caught in it and had to tell the truth. In the best-case scenario, he’d believe her.
Continuing to be vague was another option, but judging by the expectant look in his eyes, she didn’t feel like he would yield any more information without getting answers in return. And so, after considerable debate, Phoenix finally opened her mouth. “Someone gave it to me.” She’d nearly said ‘him’, but quickly swerved away from that word at the last second.
The man raised an eyebrow, his eyes skeptical but his mouth an amused crescent once again. “Someone? Would their name happen to be Dorian?”
Phoenix said nothing, still neither confirming nor denying. He seemed rather eager to try and validate his assumption, so she would let him come to a conclusion himself if he wanted to. If he had an answer of his own, it would save her from trying to come up with one.
“Not wanting to say either way, hm? I see.” Carter seemed to take a moment to interpret her reaction, his eyes drifting away from her face in apparent thought.
She remained quiet, giving him a chance to speak again. But when no further words came from him, she took the opportunity to talk instead. “Look, I don’t believe you’d arrange a personal meeting with me just to ask a few questions and go home.” Her arms uncrossed themselves, one of them resting straight at her side while the other hand settled on her hip. “You must be a busy man, so let’s cut to the chase. What do you really want?”
He looked back at her. “Goodness, aren’t you in a rush. You can’t make friendships under pressure, Miss Nyx.” He shook his head a little. “Here – as a sign of my genuine goodwill, have some wisdom, free of charge: when you’re in a hurry, the details will only be blurry.” The man punctuated his idiom with a chuckle. “A touch corny, I must admit; there’s a reason I didn’t become a poet, I suppose.”
Phoenix said nothing. She had some vague idea of what point he was trying to make, but honestly, she didn't care. She didn’t have time to play around and wait for this man to tell them what he wanted. They could be preparing for another fight instead of standing here, or finding some other way to make money. Though she had to wonder: would he go after them if he left? How badly did he want to know what he wanted to know? Then of course, on the other hand she also had to admit that it would be a bit hard for her to walk away after the financial allusions he’d made. Harrington definitely had the funds – or at least the connections – that she could most likely use. It could be a mistake to just leave it behind. On top of all this, she had to admit she was very interested in who this Dorian was. Perhaps Tae had found something out about that by now?
Carter spoke again, snapping her out of her thoughts. “You are right, though. I do have many things to get back to… But I am also so very intrigued by you and Tae here. Perhaps I need to pique your interest a little, as well.” One of his hands found their way to his moustache, which he stroked thoughtfully before adding, “Did you know that I’ve seen Tae before the video I watched yesterday?”
Phoenix felt her heart skip a beat. Did that mean he knew Tae’s master? She felt the surprise on her features, and hastily adjusted her expression to hide her emotions again. But, judging by the satisfied grin on the man’s face, he’d already caught sight of it. Taking it as an answer, he went on. “Though I have to admit, I didn’t know he was a PET until last night. My, what a surprise that was.” Carter chortled. “But not a bad one – not by any means, goodness no! In fact, it was quite the opposite. This reveal has given me some insights into… other matters.”
“Like what?” Phoenix asked, still trying to keep her tone even and unaffected.
“Oh, this and that.” The man smiled, before deliberately changing the subject. “You know, I must say, you are a hard nut to crack. It seems that Dorian even picks his ladyfriends carefully, hm? Maybe he trained you a little, too? Or are you just well-paid?” He seemed to catch himself then, shaking his head. “No, forget that last one. If you had an allowance from him, you wouldn’t be in the likes of Octaryon, would you? I doubt he’d let one of his women run around a place like that with his creation either. Did you perhaps fall out of his favour, Miss Nyx? Have a little lover’s spat?”
The glare came onto her face without resistance. In truth, Phoenix was a touch lost. She didn’t exactly know who this Dorian was, what Carter’s relationship was to him, or why he was so convinced that she was a—a mistress, it seemed? But if she played into his narrative, she might have a chance at seeing his cards without having to show any of hers. And so she let herself look angry, hoping her taut lips and sharp eyes would make her look as though she was silently seething rather than playing pretend.
However, the woman was quickly shown that maybe things weren’t that simple. And she was reminded that Carter was a man with experience well beyond hers. “Heavens, where are my manners?” His shoulders relaxed, a hand folding across his chest where it lay upon his heart. “I do apologize, Miss Nyx. I should not make such vulgar assumptions on my own accord. I do have quite the awful habit of getting carried away, especially when I’ve found myself something that actually excites this old heart of mine.” He grinned again, a touch sheepish, though the look in her eyes made Phoenix wonder if this was truth or just his next play. "I do hope you'll forgive my imagination."
“It’s fine,” she said quietly, the anger dissipating as her features softened. Was he just trying to get a rise out of her? Get her to react and give away some more information? Phoenix took in a deep breath. Although she’d been yielding very little, she still had no control of the situation. Aside from her one failed attempt at trying to steer the conversation, she’d been a passive force. Just taking the words he was throwing at her, and dishing next to nothing back. Even if it was the right course of action, she couldn’t help but feel restless. She was still helpless, wasn’t she? Still naïve. Still in over her head. And it, honestly, was infuriating.
Although she still didn’t know how to really seize any control for herself, she had to at least say something. Anything would be better than just standing here like a log and letting him prattle on and on. So, with shoulders squared and spine straightened, Phoenix spoke again. “I think we’ve gotten acquainted enough. If you think I need money so badly, then what are you offering?”
The man across from her shifted, the light creating a glare across his spectacles that obscured his eyes once more. “I’d be happy to tell you, but I need to hear something from you before I decide to – and goes without saying that I need you to be truthful. As a fellow cautious creature, I’m sure you can understand.” Carter stepped forward, the Komodo dragon at his side following suit. Despite her instincts telling her to back away from the larger human and his well-equipped PET, Phoenix planted herself firmly in place. He finally stopped a foot away from her, at a distance where she could smell his rich cologne and see the fine lines on his fair skin. Harrington’s PET remained at the same distance, no closer and no farther, but its face was pointed directly at Tae; its glowing eyes fixed on his.
He looked down at Phoenix then, and she could see the severity painted clearly on his face as he posed his question. “What do you value more: your relationship with Dorian or your own well-being?” It was a bit of an odd question, especially after he'd tried to bait and provoke her. Was he convinced she was related to this Dorian guy? Was this his direct way of finding out if she did? Or maybe he didn't actually care if she was involved or not — maybe what he really wanted to know was where her loyalty lay.
Whatever it was that he truly wanted to know, he was incredibly intent on finding out. Those blue eyes bore into her, intensely watching for every minute twitch and twinge on her face. Phoenix felt the hairs at the back of her neck stand up, and she was suddenly quite aware of the beads of sweat that collected under the hairline of her wig. There was no doubt he could tell it was one from this distance, either. In fact, she felt like he was looking right through her skin and flesh and straight into her mind. Reading the thoughts off the curves and valleys of her brain, and waiting to see if it lined up with the words that came out of her mouth.
But, as intimidated as she was, Phoenix did not have to fear her answer. For the first time since she stepped into the gym, she knew precisely what to say, and she was confident it was the right choice to make. “Myself, of course.”
Her pulse thudded in her head, her ears warm with the blood that was rushing to her brain and colouring her cheeks. Such reactions were not ones she could control; but Phoenix didn’t care. She stared right back into the man’s eyes, her own alight with the same conviction she had given her answer with. Although he did not move or even blink for what felt like an eternity after she spoke, the woman did not back down or lower her face. Even if she’d felt helpless and lost this whole time, she had to at least force herself to do this much. To pretend she wasn’t as frightened as she was.
Finally, the man cracked another grin. There was no mirth behind it, but rather a sense of satisfaction. Then, without warning, he reached up and cupped her face between his large, strong fingers. The flash of panic that lit up her eyes was another reaction she could not control, but she did manage to keep her closed fists stuck at her sides – for now.
“I’m glad to hear it,” he said, though his low, gravelly voice did not sound glad at all. “You stick to that answer and you may not ever have to work another day in your life. But—” Phoenix flinched as his grip tightened around her jaw ever so slightly. “—if you make yourself out to be a liar, you’ll not see another day at all.”
Tae was many things, almost too many, and part of that role meant that he had far better hearing than most humans. Sometimes it was a burden, almost confusing when he received so much information. Thankfully, he could turn off his earning sensitivity to something more akin to the average microphone, but in moments like these, he was glad that his ears and his eyes were supernaturally sensitive. Whereas he was nervous and paranoid, Phoenix seemed to be similar. Tae could hear her heartbeat, as odd as that may sound. He could also see her breath, unsteady and abnormal in comparison to her normal rate. That was concerning. Hopefully this stressful situation changed before her health took a nosedive. Tae did not know what he would do if all of this stress that he suggested she undertake caused her to become ill or unhealthy in some other way.
With far too much focus, Tae watched her bob her throat from what he could only assume was nerves. It was so shameful to be so useless. If he could, he would gladly take over the conversation in her place. He may not know many things, but he was comfortable in social situations because he could approach every problem with some level of logic that many humans abandoned. Perhaps it was also because Lai.pro did not really care about shame to a certain extent. Oh, he could feel shame and embarrassment, but that did not mean that it applied to this situation. Better to be ashamed about being wrong than talking to someone financially “better” than him.
As the conversation progressed, Tae found himself a touch frustrated. He had so many things to say and so many reactions to the conversation, but he had to keep his face blank. Lai.pro did not make this easier, but he could do it. For that reason alone, Tae’s face did not change when this stranger, a man who was incredibly suspicious and likely dangerous, dared to try and call himself a friend. No. A man like him, pompous and threatening, would never be Phoenix’s friend. Not only did she have standard and a good ability to judge character, but this man was unpleasant despite talking in a technically pleasant way. If Tae could tase, surely he would have a bad taste in his mouth just hearing this man talk.
Harrington, whoever he really was and whatever his true intentions may have been, was not doing anything to make Tae more comfortable with this situation. The fact that he kept coming closer and put his hands in his pockets were proof that he did not care if the pair were comfortable. Whatever his goal was here, it had nothing to do with Tae or Phoenix’s happiness, it was only his own and Phoenix’s joy would be a lucky bi-product, nothing more.
As expected, Tae himself quickly became the topic of conversation. But that is also where things became troublesome. What answer would Phoenix give him? They had not come up with a lie for this question yet, although they probably should have seen it coming. But to be fair, who would have thought that they would run into someone who knew Tae before all of this? Everyone else just accepted that Phoenix was the creator… but not this man. Tae had no way to know what answer she would give him, but whatever it was, he would swear by it.
And apparently the truth was that he was a gift. A good enough answer since it removed her from a lot of the intellectual and financial burden being his creator would have put on her. She did not need to know the details of his creation if she did not make him. The problem though would be the who. If Harrington pushed, then what would she do then?
Well, that turned out to be a pointless concern, because the CEO was kind enough to answer that question for her. And what an answer it was. Dorian, the founder and mind behind the D.O PET Corroboration, the leading source of PETs and the sole cause behind the death of cell phones and laptops. Everyone knew that Dorian was a genius inventor and skilled businessman; he revolutionized the world almost alone and now was constantly pushing PET technology further every year as the PETs became more life-like and capable. It was a good guess.
In fact, it was a very good guess. Hearing the name Dorion spoken aloud caused an odd sensation to flow through Tae. A spark in the mind, of sorts. However, just as quickly as the sensation came over him, it left and Tae returned to the present.
It was interesting to hear that Carter knew of Tae before the bot fighting video circulated. It was also odd that he had not known that Tae was inhuman. Such a wealthy, informed man should know that… but at the same time, when Phoenix first found Tae in that dumpster, Tae was overcome with the desire to keep his true identity secret. Pretending to breathe and blink were core components in his programming, programming he was ignoring at the moment in favor of looking like a statue. Perhaps, upon greater reflection, hiding his true self was not strange at all. He must have been good at pretending to be human back then too.
But there was one question that remained. Did Carter know Tae’s master? And, if what Carter was implying was true, was Dorion actually Tae’s master and perhaps even creator? With no memory or registration info to go on, Tae could not say. He had to admit though, it made sense. Dorion certainly had the brains and the funds to create Tae, after all, he created PETs in the first place. But that did not explain why Tae was in the dumpster that night or why Dorion, if he were Tae’s creator, had not put Tae-like beings on the market. It would be profitable and highly promotional since no one in any part of the world had created a PET as complex and human as Tae.
Half of Tae’s brain was considering the Dorion matter, but the other half was listening intently to the conversation and the banter of lies. There was quickly becoming a problem though as this Carter man dared to suggest that Phoenix was sleeping around, and worse than that, that she had been trained. Such an insult was intolerable, and Tae found his eyes glancing at the komodo dragon again, sizing it up in away. All Tae wanted to do was break this man’s jaw, so surely he could do that before the dragon PET could react or at least stop him? Damages would be worth shutting up his rude mouth.
The human’s apology did little to calm Tae down, but it did stop him from acting on his thoughts, so that was a small blessing. That being said, even if Phoenix forgave him, Tae certainly had no intention of doing so. That being said, when he approached again, Tae was tense and ready to act the millisecond he saw something he disliked.
And sure enough, something Tae more than disliked occurred. One second Tae was a statue, and the next every part of his body was moving in quick, fluid motions. When Carter’s hand touched her face, Tae was already in the process of weaving around Phoenix so that he was now in front of her rather than behind. As much as he wanted to though, Tae was attentive enough to notice that when he moved, so did the Komodo dragon and therefore that was the priority.
Within the same motion, while Tae weaved around Phoenix in a spinning motion, Tae’s right foot crashed into the beast right where the head turned into the body. The dragon’s head hit the concrete and was struggling, to Tae’s surprise. He had expected to shatter the casing and possibly more since he was putting the bulk of his weight on the PET, but this thing seemed unharmed despite being pinned. Meanwhile, Tae’s spinning body also resulted in him taking hold of Carter’s wrist with his right hand. This was, of course, the arm that was touching Phoenix since it was the guilty hand here.
The end result of this single, flowing, blurred action was Tae’s right foot on the PETs head, Carter’s wrist being almost crushed by Tae’s right hand, and Tae having his back towards Phoenix but facing the two enemies. For that reason, she would not have seen the flash of blue in his eyes. It was certainly a dramatic display, even if it took less than three seconds to occur.
Tae’s hand was tight around Carter’s wrist, but nothing was broken, not yet at least. “Remove your hand from my mistress or I shall shatter it,” Tae said in a robotic voice devoid of all emotion even though Tae wanted to show some right about now. To make his point a bit more clear and make up for the lack of rage in his tone, Tae tightened his metal grip until it was at a level of pressure that would bruise. “Refrain from threatening my mistress,” Tae warned after a beat, his eyes locked on Carter’s,
It was Phoenix’s mercy that was keeping Carter breathing. It was the alleyway all over again, only this time, Tae had not jumped immediately into murder. Oh, but he wanted to. Every part of his combat programming was telling him to show no mercy to the one who threatens the master. Furthermore, Tae was still conscious, so if he were told to stop defending her, he would be able to do so without her begging. Carter did not know how lucky he was.
He would be lying though if he said that he wanted to be stopped. In fact, he wanted her to tell him to kill Carter. She wouldn't, she was not the type to resort to murder. But, now that he had a stronger idea about who his old master could be, Tae also had to wonder if Dorion were here, would he get that kill order he so desired?
And there she fell, further down the rabbit hole.
All of these situations that were far outside her expertise and comfort, and all the helplessness that came with being submerged in them – it felt like being stuck down a rabbit hole. And one that not only grew deeper and deeper, but pulled her further and further in. These feelings had been constant these past few days, but it wasn’t until now – with her chin cupped in this man’s firm grip – that she clearly realized it.
But its significance was ephemeral. Hardly a moment after Carter made his power move, she saw a flurry of movement in her periphery and immediately knew it was from Tae. Unfortunately, she couldn’t exactly see what happened, what with her head and neck being forced into one position, but the cacophonous clash of metal on metal told her all she needed to know. Then, not a second after, did she a hand clamp around Carter’s. His grip instantly loosed as he hissed a curse from between clenched teeth, but his fingers did not yet fall from her face. Nevertheless, it was a welcome release, and gave Phoenix enough leeway to looked down ever so slightly and see that Tae’s foot was planted firmly on the komodo dragon’s metallic skull.
Her eyes did not linger on the sight for long, though, and quickly shifted to Carter’s face. Although she expected to see some signs of surprise or fear etched into the angles of his features, she saw nothing of the sort. There was a slight narrowing of his eyes – a subtle, but certain sort of grimace from the pain of Tae’s grip, no doubt – but beneath his moustache she could see the corner of his lips curled into a small grin. His gaze, which had naturally shifted to Tae, seemed alight with interest. Granted, it did falter as she saw Tae’s own hand tighten around Carter’s wrist. The skin around it blanched from the pressure, while everything below the point of contact began to turn even paler as well.
There was no doubt in Phoenix’s mind that it hurt, and for half a heartbeat she considered calling Tae down. But Carter held a steady expression, evidently determined to keep his composure and position of power amongst them. And despite her companion’s authoritative command, Harrington’s fingertips lingered on the curve of Phoenix’s jaw, falling away only as Tae warned against making threats. “All right, easy there, friend,” the man said, with a low chuckle.
Phoenix, with her returned freedom of motion, lowered her head and glanced at Tae. “That’ll be fine,” she said quietly, giving a small nod towards Carter’s wrist and shooting a look towards his reptilian PET – a simple signal for him to back down.
Once everyone was disentangled from each other, Carter took a step backwards. His komodo dragon followed suit, lifting its head off the hard floor before it retreated slightly, though its luminescent eyes were still glued to Tae. “You’ve got quite the bodyguard, Miss Nyx,” the man remarked, gently rubbing his wrist with his opposite hand. The half-smile lingered on his lips, and now that the situation de-escalated somewhat, the glimmer of interest shone brighter behind his rimless glasses. “Though, I suppose I should have realized that, considering I originally saw Tae amongst Dorian’s personal security detail.” The man gave another bit of laughter again, shaking his head a little, seemingly at himself. “Good gracious. I do hope you can forgive me for getting so carried away again.”
Phoenix resisted the urge to exchange a look with Tae. Carter seemed pleased with himself, having apparently pieced all these different tidbits of information together. So much that it was almost laughable: after all, he was the one giving her pieces of the puzzle to figure out. Of course, it was definitely no place to laugh though – if there was anything she needed to do, it was to try and keep her own façade up and learn as much as she could from him. But first, they had to get back to the matter at hand. Clearing her throat, she spoke again. “You made your point, so I’ll ask once more: what are you offering me?”
With a flash of white, his smile grew wider. “I’d like to buy Tae from you.” Short, sweet, and simple. After all his fuss and all his blabbering, the crux of the conversation was just seven succinct words.
She narrowed her eyes. Frankly, it was rather annoying that they went through such a tiresome song and dance just to arrive at this. Something she’d already thought about and knew the answer to. “Tae isn’t for sale.” Seeing as this was one of the few things that she felt sure about, it didn’t take her long to reply.
“Now, let’s not be too hasty on the trigger there.” His hands settled into his pockets, his stance relaxing now that they were back to the comfortable realm of conversation. “Even though I’d technically be getting your little gift third-hand from you, I’m willing to pay quite the pretty penny for it. What kind of price are you looking for, hm?”
The woman shook her head, folding her arms over her chest. “I’m not looking for anything.” Her spine straightened and her shoulders squared as she unconsciously felt her confidence rising, probably for the first time in this interaction.
However, her stubbornness seemed to have no impact on Carter’s enthusiasm. “Anything can be up for sale, for the right price. How many digits would it take to change your mind? Six? Seven? Or eight – isn’t that a lucky number in your culture?”
Phoenix frowned, her brows furrowing beneath her bangs. “What is it that you want to do with Tae?” This question was one of genuine curiosity, rather than a sign of her interests shifting. Though if he chose to interpret things that way, she wouldn’t complain. Unfortunately for her, it was hard to tell one way or another: the man’s expression was unchanged from his rather easy-going smile, and he paused briefly before finally giving his answer.
“I’ve got a few things in mind.” Carter’s attention transferred to Tae, whom he looked up and down slowly while he went on. “One of which is to, let’s say, even the playing field. As I’m sure you know, Aiki is always by Dorian’s side… and while Carmella here is a reliable old gal, she’s not on the same level.” Here, he glanced down at the PET at his side (which was still utterly fixated on its humanoid counterpart) before he made eye contact with Phoenix once more. “So with that in mind, Tae’s strength alone is quite worthwhile to me. And when you consider that there are other matters, well, you can understand my willingness to give you more than a fair price.”
Why did it seem like the more he talked, the more questions came up? “What does Aiki have anything to do with it?” She, of course, had no idea who Aiki was. And, with her mind more than occupied with keeping character, she still couldn’t think of who this Dorian could be either. But the only thing she could do was keep pretending, she supposed. “Are you planning on… fighting it? Aiki, that is?” Judging by the context of his answer, that seemed likely, but it still begged the question of why? Why would he want to do that? Did he have a beef with this Dorian guy, or did he want him… incapacitated, perhaps?
Annoyingly, Carter just laughed. “I’m afraid we’re getting off topic, Miss Nyx. Is there a price you’re looking for, or are you hoping to hear an offer first?”
The woman shook her head and sighed. “Neither.” She’d give him no more than that. The result of this curt answer was a silence that hung between them, at least for a few instances until the man finally continued on.
“All right. How about you give it some thought, then. Let your mind wander over all the possibilities a few million could bring you.” He looked to Carmella, and with a simple voice command a small interface appeared in the air before him, hovering at chest-level. Carter’s fingers danced over the projected keyboard, and with a few taps a phone number was sent to Tae. The man waved his hand then, dismissing the graphics before resuming their discussion. “You can contact me at this number when you change your mind.” A grin; he was certain she would, wasn’t he? “And as a gesture of apology for my—enthusiasm, I’ve sent you a personalized referral to my favourite bot fighting ring. There will be a fight tonight, if you're looking to participate.” He dipped his head graciously, his hand settling over his heart in some sort of attempt to look sincere.
“Right. Thanks.” She spoke stiffly, considering looking at the information but ultimately deciding against it. While she still had questions floating around in her head, Phoenix had a feeling she wouldn’t be getting any answers out of him unless she changed her mind. And surely a shrewd man like him would use her curiosities as leverage against her, to try and persuade her into doing what he wanted. But there was no way she was going to budge on this, so she supposed that was that. “Well,” the woman announced, with a nod of acknowledgment, “Goodbye then.” With that, she turned and walked out, keeping her eyes focused on the path ahead of her.
There was nothing but silence behind her as Carter let her go. Phoenix remained silent, her lips pressed tightly together, as she and Tae traveled back down the path and out to the front where Rhys’s car still sat in wait. When her friend noticed them approaching, he quickly looked up and reached over from the driver’s seat to open the passenger door. “Hey—how was it?” He looked from Phoenix to Tae as the two climbed into the car. “I got your—uh, Tae’s message. And holy crap, Carter Harrington was in there? Did he give you money or what?”
Phoenix leaned back, shaking her head as she let her torso slouch into the seat. “No, he didn’t,” she sighed. “He wanted to buy Tae.” She was pretty sure she didn’t need to announce that her answer was no.
“Wha—he did? Why?” Rhys glanced from Phoenix to Tae, looking to either of them for answers. “And, I mean— uh, like—how much was he offering?”
“Well… he kept talking about someone named Dorian. Then he mentioned someone named Aiki who follows him around… and that he’d want to do other stuff with Tae. So he offered millions.” Saying the words, somehow, didn't feel real. Perhaps it was from the mental stress and physical exhaustion that were catching up with her, because Phoenix felt utterly wiped out. And although her mind seemed to be trying to process everything that happened, it all felt kind of like a faraway, dream-like blur. Had all that happened? Did some big rich guy offer her millions, more than enough to eradicate every problem in her shitty life? And did she turn it down without a second thought?
Unsurprisingly, Rhys was equally bewildered. “Uh—are you serious? Millions? And you said… no?” Incredulous, he looked to Tae. “I mean, no offense, Tae, but… Phoenix, that would, y’know… I mean, you know, right?” Although her friend failed to make much sense, she knew he was getting at the very question she had just asked herself: did she really say no to something that would fix everything?
She closed her eyes and placed a hand over her furrowed brow. “I know, Rhys, but I can’t just… sell Tae. There’s gotta be another way, and—and he gave us an invitation to a bot fighting ring, too. Maybe we can just go there and keep doing what we’ve been doing.” It was hard not to sound defeated, especially with the onslaught of fatigue that washed over her body the moment she returned to just being ‘Phoenix’, but she tried to inject some hopefulness into her tone.
But it seemed she did a bad job of it, or Rhys simply was still in shock from her objectively foolish decision. Or maybe it was that he decided to leave her alone for a second. Nevertheless, he took a good pause before turning to Tae instead. “Uh, so hold on, by Dorian and Aiki did he mean… Dorian Douglas, like, of D.O. PET Corroboration? How did he even come up?” He blinked, utterly bemused as he shook his head. “Er, maybe... Tae, maybe you could just recap things from the top…?”
