After the defeat of Firelord Sozin, Prince Zuko takes to the throne. His first order is that the Western, Southern, and Eastern Air Temples be restored to their former glory. Under Firelord Zuko, the four nations are experiencing a new era of peace.
But, behind the scenes, there is trouble brewing. A man by the name of Gimang is using fear-mongering and false facts to convince nonbenders that benders are planning to eradicate them. The tension escalates soon enough, and many nonbenders are discriminating benders socially, financially, and occupationally. Many nonbenders have armed themselves with bionic Fulgur gloves, gloves that electrocute people.
The whole town is holding its breath. They know that Gimang is planning something. Something big. The only question is: What?

“Hotaru? Where are you? Your shift started five minutes ago!”

I walked to the door and yelled down the stairs. “Coming, Satomi!”

I adjusted the small, metal flame in my bun and walked into the lobby. Satomi, a fellow employee, was slouching behind the desk, head in hand. I tapped her shoulder and she turned around.

“God, finally!” Atsuko sighed. “Sato-san is angry again because she can’t bring her platypus bear cub into the inn, so you’ll have to deal with that. And Feng-san wants us to “give those darn kids next door the boot!” because apparently, they’re loud, but I know for a fact that they are in the park playing a game of Ignis.”

I laughed and sat down in the chair. “I think Feng-san just hates all kids anywhere near him, Satomi.”

“See ya.” She shut the office behind her.

I sighed, pulled out my log book, and began zoning out for the day.

I only needed this sucky job because the police have been arresting any shady benders they see. Fucking oranges*, all of them.

The police chief had fired most of their bender policemen, so now the police were arresting “suspicious” benders all around town. They suggested that all benders wear a mark of some sort that shows they are benders yesterday. The council, which has a majority of nonbenders, will probably agree.

If everything was normal, I could just continue on as normal, going out on hitman missions and terrorizing the public with my gang, The Valkyries. But those goddamn oranges had to go out and-

“Hello?”

I looked up. “Huh?”

“I asked for a room?” A tall man in front of me asked.

“Oh, right, um, standard or deluxe?” I asked, monotone.

“Hmmm… do you have any benders living near room B3?”

I sighed. “I’m sorry, sir, I can’t divulge past or present residents personal information.”

The man frowned. “I just need to know if they bend.”

“Very sorry, sir, I can’t tell you that. Standard or deluxe?”

The man scowled at me. “Fine, then!” He slammed his hands against the table, knocking over a candle. As the man left, the table caught flame. I pushed back from my desk and stood up. I raised my hands, took a deep breath, and lowered my head and hands. The flame flickered and died. I sighed, wiping a sweat bead away from my forehead.

I looked at my slightly wet hand. Pathetic. I thought. You put out a small fire and you’re sweating.

I sat back down, ready to trudge my way through the rest of my shift.

*or·ange: /noun/ A person who easily believes anything they hear, especially propaganda about benders.

Origin: Derived from the old joke "If you say 'gullible' slowly it sounds like "oranges'"

I sprinted through the brush, and glanced behind me. Shit, he’s on my tail. I thought, as I zipped around a oak tree, loosing him. I bolt out of the thick bundle of forest. I turned around and prayed that he stayed there long enough. I had once again got caught bending by the non-bending movement. I had really got to be more careful.

I walked along the hot, dirt pathway heading south for about an hour until reaching my village, Keld.

“Avani is back!”

I look up and see Gopan running towards me. He wrapped his tiny arms around my waist and giggles.

“Hello, Gopan," I laugh and ruffle his hair. "Where is Father?”

“He is in the main tent. He was worried about you because you were late.” Gopan runs off with his other friends.

I sigh and brave myself for the lecture I am about to get.

I opened the tent doors of the main tent. Father and Satich are around the fire, both talking quietly to each other. They look up in unison when I enter. Father lets out a sigh of relief.

“Come here, Avani. You worried me sick," I walk to him. "Where were you?” His eyebrows furrow as he holds me arms with both his hands.

“I-I was......um...I got lost. Again." I hold my breath for his response..

“You got lost?” Father said in a disbelieving tone, “You’ve been doing this since you were twelve, Avani. You really think I am going to believe that?”

“I know, I just w-wasn’t thinking when I was coming b-back.” I said and saw Satich grin out of the corner of my eye.

"Avani, tell me what happened?"

"Father it was nothing," His eyes narrow on me. "I got caught again, but I got away before they could catch me." I add before my Father blow up on me.

"Are you kidding me, Avani? You need to be more careful. Gosh, you are fifteen-years-old for crying out loud." Father puts his hand to his face and walks away from me in thought.

I lower my head in shame. Father is right. I should be more mature and careful. I am almost sixteen.

"Go give Gopan a bath, Avani. I will talk to you later." Father shoos me away.

I leave the tent with an umbrella of shame. I drag my feet to our private tents, where I find Gopan playing with wood action figures on his cot.

“Hi, Avani. Want to play with me?” He holds up an action figure for me.

“No, I can’t. We have to get ready for bed. Satich is making dinner now, so you got to have bath before you eat.” I said grabbing his clothes and a clean washcloth. Gopan puts his action figures on his cot and holds my hand as we walk out of the tent and to the bath pools.

We find an empty tent and Gopan starts to get undressed as I get hot water from the pump.

“Hello,"

I almost jump out of my skin, spilling half of the water I collected. I turn around to discover a boy my age with long, sandy hair grinning at me. He is wearing a loose dark green tank top and brown pants.

"Hi, River. Where'd you come from?" I start to refill my water bucket.

“Father is making me move the big dirt piles on the east side of the village all day ever since he caught me sneaking out.”

“You definitely smell like it." I scrunch up my nose. River laughs. My bucket fills to the top again.

"Let me help you." River grabs the handle from me.

"Thanks."

We walk there in silence. River gives me the bucket back before I head in.

"Thanks, River." I smile at him. "I have to give Gopan a bath quickly before we are late for dinner, so I better go now."

River nods in contemplation. "Hey, how about I come with you to the city tomorrow? I could probably talk my Father out of one day of digging."

"Oh, um, yeah sure if you want. It's not super exciting." I give a weak laugh.

"Okay, well, I'll see you tomorrow, Avani" He gives me one last smile and then turns around and walks away.

I duck into the tent.

“Keiko get over here! I need you to organize some of these recipes!” Maru, my mentor shouted from across the observatory.

“Aren't we leaving in a bit though?” I asked, scrambling over to do what I have been asked.

“I am aware, but I would like these organized first, so I may have everything in order when we meet Firelord Zuko.” Maru explained, seeming a bit annoyed.

“Understood sir.”

===

After I had finally finished organizing the recipes, we were off. As we were approaching the dock, more and more travelers in red robes showed up. Probably headed back to the Fire Nation. Just as these observations were being made, the docks came into full view.

The ships were breathtaking. These boats seemed super expensive, so I had no idea how we would travel to the Fire Nation. Maru nudged me towards one of the largest, most majestic ships. (here) I looked at Maru in admiration. How could I repay him for something this… exquisite? He must have seen the look in my eye, because he immediately said,

“No need to repay me. Everything is already paid for.” I beamed at him, and we walked in sync towards the ship.

“That’ll be 10.00 a day then, with 10 dollars up front, sir.”

I was finally finishing my shift. After work, I had classes with Master Seng. Master Seng is a notorious firebending teacher, known for her influential training of young and old students.

I’d never been good at firebending. By now I knew some simple moves. Enough to put out a small fire and make a flame in my hands, but I’d never been able to use my firebending in combat. Though I'm skilled in shooting or throwing almost anything, I still can't seem to figure out how to control a goddamn flame.

I stood up, calling down the next shift. I went into the office, grabbed my bag, and left out the back door. I walked down the alleyway, careful to avoid any police patrols. I slipped in a small crack in an abandoned building.

The building was the Valkyries headquarters. The building was a small one, tilted and damp, but it was hard to get to. That was a top concern, especially with the current situation. When the mayor ordered this area to be renovated, the owner of this fine establishment refused to sell her property. The mayor tried to use eminent domain to take the property, but since the building to be built on the owner’s land was a private hotel, she lost. But, since the mayor was crafty and a petty bitch, she built tall buildings all around the owner’s property except for a small alleyway to the front door.

The owner eventually surrendered, giving the mayor her land. But, since there were so many fully-built buildings surrounding the house, they couldn’t demolish it. So the mayor simply built more buildings all around the house, making it inaccessible. At least she thought it was inaccessible.

Shila, the Valkyries founder, was sitting in a chair, a small flame spinning about her finger. I felt a twang of jealousy at her casual skill in firebending.

“Sup, Hotaru.” Shila nodded. Next to her was Ketu, a former pro-bender and the brawn of the group. She was reading a newspaper with the title “ARE BENDERS OUT TO KILL US ALL?” I decided that it would be best to leave her alone for now, judging by how hard she was gripping the page.

Natsumi, our treasurer, and Atsuko, our director, were training on the other side of the room. We had three bins filled with either water, hot coals, or earth. There were crudely made metal dummies on the other side of the room that you could practice with. If you wanted to get a real challenge, you could get Ketu to move the dummies around.

“Hotaru?” I looked up.

“Yeah, Shila?”

“I need you to get some dirt, on next Friday's pro-bending match referee. His name is Sako Shinobi. All the information you might need is here.” She handed me a file with a picture of Shinobi pinned on the front.

I nodded, took the file from her, and stepped up the creaky, tilted stairs. I went to my office and spread out the papers out on the warped desk.

Shinobi was the 38 years old, had two children, and worked on the side at a marketplace restaurant. He went to a state college as a business major and moved to the Northern Water Tribe for 3 months to study abroad. He married once and divorced once.

Not much, I thought. Still, everybody is hiding something.

I made a plan to go check out the man’s house, which was near the town center, tomorrow morning. For the rest of the night, I trained with Atsuko and Natsumi.

The next morning, I woke up early to shower before my day with River. We had been friends since we were eight, so we were close. I pulled back my covers of my cot and grabbed my outfit for the day and my bathroom pail. I tried to make swift movements to not wake my brothers and father up. I got out of the tent successfully and walked down to the bathrooms.

I took a quick shower and put my clothes on; a light green tank top and tan pants. It was supposed to be hotter than usual today, so I put my hair into a loose ponytail and packed up my map, snacks and water, and money bag. I swung my pouch over my shoulder and headed for the entrance of Keld to wait for River. When I got there, he was already waiting for me; leaning against the stone wall of the gate. His hair was in a bun and his clothes looked looked similar to mine. Dark green tank top and black capris. I waved to him, and he waved back.

"Hey," I say. "So your Father let you come, huh?"

"Well, not really. But he is never up this early, so it is not a big deal." River laughs.

"Okay," I smile at him. "You ready?"

"Yep," He held up two water bottles.

We start along the path heading north to the market. We walk in silence until River breaks it.

"Have you ever wanted to run away and just, like, disappear?"

"What? Of course, not. I have my family to think of." I wait for his response, but nothing comes. "Have you?"

"Yeah. I want to get away from my Father."

I look over at River. His eyes look lost. Like someone switched them for someone else's. "Hey, are you okay?"

He looks at me and nods, but doesn't say anything.

River has always wanted to move away from his father ever since he was eleven and he told me that his father hit him. He would constantly sleep in my tent with my family instead if with his father when he was younger, but now his Father forbids it. River has never said it out loud, but he wishes his mother was back. She died while giving birth to his brother when River was nine. His brother didn't make it either. His father hasn't been the same since.

"Is that why you want to run away? Because of your father?"

River looks up at the sunrise for a bit. "I don't know. There is a part of me who just wants to move somewhere else and start fresh, but another part of me who wants to stay with my Father. He lost his wife and son. Gosh, I feel so guilty that I have these thoughts."

"Well, you lost your brother and mom, too, you know."

River looks at me. His gaze shifting from my eyes to my lips. "Yeah, I guess that's true."

*10 weeks later*

We have finally arrived at the biggest harbor in the fire nation. Harbor Andu. I stared up at all the towering buildings making the city as big as it is.

We climbed down the ramp, and on to solid ground. I walked blissfully around in circles, relishing in the solid ground.

We finally got our traveling bags, and started to walk down the winding roads. After a while, and goodness knows how many turns, we made it to our hotel. I unpacked my things and decided to stroll around, and explore. After checking in with Maru, I strolled out of the hotel.

After a bit of strolling, something insane happened. I girl around my age barreled out of a window. The shutters banged on the walls, and what looked like photos flew everywhere. She gathered them up, and ran. But then, she dropped one, and didn't seem to notice. I quickly swiped it off the ground, and took off after the girl. "Wait, you dropped this!" I yelled after her.

I sat up in my bed, sunlight hitting my face and making me squint. I put my hand over the window and closed the curtain. Flipping to covers off of my legs, I got ready for the day.

Black shirt, black pants, grey mask that I could pull over my mouth and nose. I tied my hair up into a bun and stuck the fire nation emblem in it. I draped an intricate red shawl over my shoulders and pulled on my specially made red shoes.

I grabbed my daggers and hooked them under the shawl. Went over my plan and all possible outcomes in my head.

Walk to his house, go behind the house, break in, search, retrieve, retreat. If someone comes during any step, retrieve and retreat.

I was not going to mess up this mission. Shila had been overly calm about it when she asked me, and that usually meant she was trying not to psyche me out. Which meant she needed me to succeed, which means this is an important mission.

I strolled down the stairs, checking the clock above the door.

8:30. I thought. I need to get there by 9.

I hailed a cab by the street and paid him to take me to a house a couple blocks away from Shinobi’s house. I saw a blue car in the driveway, and sat down on a bench, acting as if I was waiting for someone.

I waited there for about 10 minutes when I saw Sako walk out of his house, get in his car, and drive off. I strolled over to his house, sure not to attract any attention.

I slipped into his yard and picked the lock on his back door. It popped open after some fiddling, and I opened the door.

The lights were off, and the curtains were closed. I didn’t turn anything on but shut and locked the back door. I walked up to the top floor and slid open the first door I saw. It was Shirogami’s room.

Perfect, I thought, opening his dresser. I rifled through the clothes, looking in the back and in between the clothing. I didn’t find anything. I sifted through the items on top of the dresser, opening small boxes and looking behind picture frames. I ran my hand along the side of the dresser, and I found something.

There was a small knob. I pressed it, and a small compartment opened on the top of the dresser. I lifted the lid and saw a letter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Sako Shinobi,

We are very appreciative that you purchase from our store. We hope that you enjoy your products. This letter is to thank you for your diligent shopping from us. We have added below a code that can be used to buy any item from our store under 50$ for free. We hope that you continue shopping with us!

Sincerely,

Amal Rochan . . . Hema Kiran

Co-manager of Fiarro Attract . . . Co-manager of Fiarro Attract

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiarro Attract? I thought, skimming the letter again. That’s a lingerie store, right?

I smirked, knowing I’d found something. I stuffed the letter into the sleeve of my shirt.

Now to find some proof. I opened Shinobi’s closet, and after some searching, I found a stack of rather… compromising photos. I scoffed at the untasteful nudes that were signed at the bottom with a red fountain pen.

I left the closet and shut the door when I heard the front door open and shut. The lights downstairs flicked on and I sprang into action. I shut the secret compartment and unlocked the window shutters. I could hear footsteps on the stairs coming up.

I stuffed the pictures in my bag when the footsteps stopped. I lifted a hand into my shawl and took out a dagger. I whirled around, threw a dagger near his head, and jumped out of the window.

I watched the ground as it barreled toward me. I hit the ground and rolled. My left shoulder ached, I knew there was going to be a nasty bruise there later. I got up and sprinted down the street, shocked civilians staring. I took a sharp turn down an alleyway and saw a girl running after me, with something in her hand.

My heart dropped as I realized what it was. The picture. If that picture gets out to the public, the letter and the pictures will be useless blackmail. I kept running down the alleyway, making sure the girl was following me and made a quick turn into a small divot in the wall.

The girl’s footsteps slowed as she approached me. I pulled out one of my daggers, pushed her against the wall, and pressed a dagger against her neck.

“The picture, please” I ordered breathlessly.

River and I are about fifteen minutes from the market. We stop at a near by oak tree to get some shade and refill on water. The sun is blazing in our eyes, since it is still morning, so I make a rock wall to shield the sun.

River closes his eyes. Sweat drips down his forehead. "That feels nice."

I take another swig of water from my pouch and hand it to River. He does the same. The sounds of misquotes and cicadas fill my eardrums.

"You think your Father is worrying for where you're at?" I ask River.

He opens his eyes and shakes his head. "He knows I run off a lot, but he also knows I'll come back. I always do."

We sit in silence for some more, soaking up the shade from the earth wall. I hear rustling behind us and jerk up into attention.

"River did you hear that?" I elbow him.

"Arg, stop. I didn't hear anything, Avani." He folds his arms and closes his eyes again.

I slump back down and do the same, but hear it again. "Okay, I swear, River. are you not hearing this?" I turn my focus to behind us, the earth wall falling. I walk around the tree to search for something in the brush.

"Hello? Is someone there?" I yell.

No answer.

Suddenly, two arms grab my wrists and yank them backward. I yelp in pain.

"Avani? Are you okay?" I hear river only to hear his do the same thing.

"River? River? Are you okay? What's going on?" I yell.

The men who grabbed me tie up my hands and tell me to shut the hell up. Once the rope is secure on my wrists, they yank me back onto my feet and drag me to a wooden carriage.

"Did you get the boy?" A man with a bushy beard sticks his head out of the back of it.

"Yeah, he made a fight, though, you little twat." another voice behind me growls.

"River?" I squeak.

"You better shut your mouth, you fena." I can feel the man's hot breath on the back of my neck.

"Hey you don't talk to her like that, man!" I hear River speak up.

Then I hear River wail. "That's what you get for talking like that to us." The other voice says.

"Get them in the back. Boss will be happy we scrounged up some little earth benders." Beard Man hisses.

Shit.

"The picture please."

I startled at her sudden appearance. Then I realized there was a knife at my throat, and I started to panic.
"Uh, what do you mean?" I asked, knowing full well she had seen it.

"The picture. The one you were just holding?" she insisted.

"Hahah, what do you mean?" I asked nervously, reaching around my bag for the dissapearing powder I had sworn I packed. My hand finally found it, and I threw it in the strange girls face.

I ran as fast as my legs would carry me. As I passed a bucket on the ground, I used bending to move the bucket of water in her way. I had to use as much as possible to my advantage. As I was running, I glanced down at the photo and dropped it in disgust. It was a guys creepy nude. As I ran back to find Maru, I heard the strange girl swear in frustration, but I ran to the hotel anyways.

"What do you mean?" The girl lied. I spotted her hand moving, and before I could stop her, she threw a black powder in my face. My eyes burned, and I dropped the knife. I heard the girl running away. I wiped the powder from my face, grabbed the knife from the ground, and sprinted after her. I saw her dash around a corner further down the alleyway.
"Jesus Christ, this mission is not going to plan," I mutter, wiping the tears from my eyes. I rounded the corner and ran into a wooden bucket. I fell to the ground, into a puddle of water. I got up, just to see the girl leave the alley, going into the street.
"Shit!" I yelled and kicked the bucket. I jogged after her, knowing I wouldn't be able to catch her now. Something caught my eye. A small piece of paper on the ground. I picked it up, and smiled and laughed in relief. It was the picture. She must've dropped it. I sighed and sat down on the damp concrete, leaning my head against the dirty side of the building.
===
"I'm back!" I shout into the headquarters. Natsumi is sitting at the table, talking with Shila. I toss the stack of photos on the table. "I found pictures, they were a bitch to get through."
Both girls flipped through them and grimaced. "Oh, that'll do nicely. Any witnesses?" Shila asked.
"Just one, but I don't think she recognized who was in the pictures."
Shila leaned back, "Either way, she doesn't have any proof. Blackmail's in the bag, another good mission, Hotaru."
I clicked my tongue and mini-saluted her. "I'm gonna take a shower, being covered in alleyway rainwater isn't the most pleasant feeling."
Natsumi opened her mouth. "Don't ask," I put my hand up and walked up the stairs, chuckling.

I’m thrown into the back of a wagon. I hit the wall hard, knocking the wind out of me. I cough, trying to get my breath back. I glance to the right out the back door of the wooden wagon. Beard Man throws River in, too. He falls on his back and groans. I catch a glimpse of red on his face, but he faces away from me. The men slam the doors shut and it goes dark. I can hear them chuckling as they walk to the front of the wagon. A small streak of sunlight streams in from someplace. Maybe a crack in the wood. River is still lying on the ground by the time the wagon jerks to a start.

“River?” I whisper. “Can you hear me? Are you okay?”

He grunts in response. I shuffle over closer to him and nudge him with my foot. He sits up and rests back on the wall of the wagon. His head falls back. His eyes are half-way closed. I scoot back and rest on the wall across from him. The wagon isn’t too big. Maybe five or six feet across. We both sit like that for a while. Breathing heavy. Trying to comprehend what the hell just happened to us. The sunlight finally moves as we take a left turn. I look up to my left and see a little crack on the wood in the corner of the wagon. The light hits River’s face as we finish turning. Now, I can really see what happened. Deep red blood pours down River’s cheek. It almost looks like it is coming from his eye.

“Holy shit.” I bend closer to him. The blood is coming from his eyebrow. “Did they punch you?”

River doesn’t respond.

“We should get that cleaned up. I probably have something in my bag.” I look down but realize my bag isn’t there. Damn. They must have taken it off me before throwing me in here. How did I not realize?

“Vani, look. I’m fine. It’s not like I haven’t been punched before.”

“But you’re bleeding. Like, a lot.” The blood was dripping halfway down his face. I was nervous it was going to get in his eye.

“I’ll be fine. Trust me.”

“You promise?” I ask.

“Yes,” He tries to wipe the blood off with his shoulder, but he just smears it. “I’m going to be fine.”

It was my fault we were in here. I was the one who had the earth wall up. River wasn’t doing anything. They shouldn’t have taken him. A lump forms in my throat thinking about what they’ll do to us. If they’ll kill us. Or just hurt us. Depending on if we are still in the forest or not, it’s still before noon. It’ll probably only be an hour or so until Father notices I’ve been out too long. Father. Gopan. Satich. They all don’t where I am. Tears well in my eyes and a sob threatens up my throat. Nobody knows where we are. River’s dad doesn’t know he left. He is probably looking for him right now.

“I’m sorry,” I sigh.

River looks up. “What?”

“I’m to blame for getting us caught. I should have been more careful. I’m really sorry.”

“Stop,” That’s all he says.

“No,” I say. “It is my fault. I’m the one to blame.”

“No, it’s not. The only people who are to blame are those assholes who are driving the wagon.” He points over to where I can still hear laughter and talking.

“But I’m the one who was actually bending.”

“You weren’t doing anything wrong!”

“River, I was one who had the wall up. I’m the one who’s to blame. Stop telling me it’s those men. Stop telling me I’m not the one who got us in here. Because I am.” I snap. The sting in my voice surprises me. “Sorry,” I mumble.

“It’s fine.” He says, shifting his position.

The wagon shook side-to-side from the holes in the ground. I had to brace myself from not falling over. The men’s muffled voices filled the silence. They seemed like they were having the time of their life. They were also probably leading us to our death. The nonbenders were not people to mess with. Most of them were armed heavily. Satich had told me some of them armed themselves with Fulgur gloves, which electrocuted you. Not anyone that I saw had those, but they might have not had them on. I am grateful they didn’t use them on us.

“Do you think we’re going to die?” Rivers squeaks as if he was reading my mind. His voice never sounded so small. So vulnerable.

“What?” I tried to act confused, but I can’t help thinking the same thing. Was this it? Were we going to die? Were these men going to kill us?

“Nonbenders are known to be vicious. And the men talked about bringing us to their boss. Tell me you don’t think that they are talking about Gimang.”

I focus on my lap. “I don’t know, River. I really don’t know.”

“I don’t want to die, Avani. I didn’t-” His voice breaks off. I glance up at him. His eyes sparkle in the sunlight.

I wanted to tell him we wouldn’t, but I didn’t think I could lie to him about this one.
