"TITANS!"

"TITANS AT THE RIVERBANK!!!"

Bellowed Kane, hands forming a cone, projecting his words to his fellow scouts.

One, in particular, a 4 meter, was getting a tad too close for comfort already. With massive strides it had closed the gap between Kane and the river, and he had to act quick, being in prime position with trees flanking his position. With a nervous gulp, he swallowed his doubts, thinking of his dead friends, using the loss as fire, and from his previous kill he took much needed confidence.

He could do it, if he followed his training, if he followed his instincts.

And so, with confidence, he grappled to a tree on the right hand side of the titan, landing on trunks side. Grappling to an opposite tree to the titans left, he shot like a dart, weaving above the outstretched arm of the titan before dropping down again, slashing the titan at the neck, spinning his body to increase impact velocity and the power of his stroke.

As the blades made purchase, fire lit in the eyes of the scout as he notched his second kill.

Landing on the left hand tree he smiled, confidence running deep. He was getting pretty good at killing titans.... At least the small ones... It was a start.

She raises to her feet, the furs of her cloak dirt-dusted with all manners of filth, and rummages one of her cast-steel scabbards for a blade. As weak as she is--physically, psychologically and everything in between--Akai can still hold a blade; could hold a blade, in fact, till her last, lamenting breath. She swipes away at the wind in her armed hand and swipes away at her tears with the unarmed, ready for whatever encroaches from the forest walls.

"I will never fall," she whispers.

Victoria turns to the water, if the Titans were awake then any chance they have to hunt or eat normally would be gone since they'd have to get moving again "Don't think we can do much hunting" she mumbles before she jumps to the next branch and she climbs the rest of the tree so she can get a better view "I'm gonna thank those idiots for making me climb those trees in our backyard" she thinks, now that she didn't need gas to climb to the trees once she's already in it she could take out more Titans. She sighs as she slowly makes her way to the edge of the branch before jumping down and with speed she rarely displays she heads towards the riverbank where she lands next to Akai "Wanna take out a small one together?" she asks looking at her "If you're up for it anyway".

Mizuki had spent her time lazing around in the shade of the trees. She was exhausted and starving which wasn’t the best combination to be when you’re knee deep in Titan territory. The food supply around these parts were low and animals were hard to find. She knew there were bugs littered about the ground that’s be a good source of protein, but there’s no chance you’d catch her munching on those. The scout was almost tempted to venture beyond the moat in search of food but didn’t quite know if it was worth the energy. How could Serenity live for so long like this?

Her tired trance was broken by the heavy thunderous splashes that seemed to be growing closer and closer. There was only one thing that could make that much noise...

"TITANS AT THE RIVERBANK!!!"

Her ODM let out a hiss as she maneuvered her way towards the riverbank towards the sounds of the shouting and intense pounding. Sure enough a horde was trudging its way through the natural moat hoping to fill her mouths with the blood of the scouts. Her eyes quickly caught sight of her squad-mates engaging their enemies, particularly on Kane as he cut down a 4 meter. "I'm coming in hot!" She called out to the group, taking aim at another 4 meter that was stumbling towards them. Mizuki flung herself up with a tree before hooking her wires into the flesh of the beast and reeling her in for the blow.

- Coal Krüger -

Coal perked at Kane's warning, and just in time because a giant mouth had come bursting from the canopy as a great abnormal came flying towards him. It crashed with a deafening BOOM bowling over the tree he had been standing on just a moment ago.

"Abnormal! I'm drawing it away!" he yelled as he flew off and the horses bolted. He whistled, and his dapple gray mare, separated from the herd and came galloping towards him. He landed with ease down her saddle.

"Hey, ugly, over here!" He banged his blades noisily together.

The abnormal had slumped on the ground, steam rising from its flattened face as one gruesome bloody eye turned his way. It gave a most unearthly moan and crawled after him.

Coal's horse leaped across the half-drawn bridge of the moat, then he and the monster vanished deep into the forest never to be seen again.

Titans?

No...

Those splashes aren't footfalls, those are horse hooves.

However, with Kane Foster's blaring announcement of TITANS, all of the scouts, whose temperaments are already teeming with trepidation, find themselves relying wholly on their human nature: fight or flight and nothing in between. Several scouts ready their blades in preparation for fight and several others ready their cylinders and cables in preparation for flight.

Witnessing the horses for himself, but only because of his vantage, the Foster clansman realises his mistake--that there aren't any titans--a second too late. Those who opted for flight have long since disappeared into the deep dark woods, never to be seen again.

The calvary makes their ride in from the moat's shallows. A charge with Camilla the Captain and several other officials at the vanguard. “She's alive,” the scouts, the ones who remain, whisper amongst themselves. Most if not all of the scouts whisper, too, about the horses, recognising theirs in the harras of Thoroughbreds, all of assorted appearances—manes of silvery steels, coal-coated furs, white-washed hides, luscious auburn luminosities that catch the lights of afternoon's overhead whites.

Maybe it's this white light that blinds Mizuki.

Maybe, too, that dust cloud, kicked up by horse hooves, that hangs over the officials like a burial shroud.

Maybe it's something else...

Too much time out here in these savave wilds... too much death to maintain one's sanity... Too much grief not to want raw retribution. Revenge for the headmen and women whose decisions led to the deaths of all those men and women. Of course, one can only assume. Only Mizuki will know for certain.

Whatever the case may be, she blends the line between friend and foe when she comes down from the treetops, not for a titan, but for Camilla the Captain, seemingly intent on committing a mutiny on the one leading the charge.

“Look out--”

Niklas knows his words won't carry over those horse hooves. So, he runs towards Camilla Moore. Runs until the ligaments in his ankles strain. Till the hamstrings in his thighs rip themselves apart. Till all of his breath expunges from his lungs in heaving exhales. He employs his ODM equipment's cylinders for a burst in velocity. Adrenaline is in overdrive, time as he knows it seeming to still before his very eyes. This is the moment where the young man throws Astrid and Serenity a sideways look that implies a funereal farewell. As luck would have it (good or bad, either is arguable), he makes it in time, Mizuki Kohaku's blade cutting him cleanly down instead.

Rivulets of blood spill their ways out of his mouth from either side of his lips like a red wine too sour. They streak along his chin, dyeing his stubble a macabre shade of scarlet, and slip away into droplets that patter, patter, patter into the soils beneath his feet. “You,” wails the corporal weakly, for his strength has abandoned him, “You--” He doesn't survive long enough to finish, the blade having pierced his heart, and falls onto the mutineer's sword as a slump of warm death. Mizuki may feel the man's dying heartbeats, as faint as they are, thrum her steel. Until, of course, Niklas Dok's heart beats its last beat.

Niklas Dok is dead.

Victoria looks at the horses and she looks at Niklas, she realizes that if they're fighting humans she could probably do better "My aunt's gonna kill me" she mumbles as she takes a dagger from her boot and she cuts of her long blood stained hair before looking at the odd, scouts were scattered thanks to Kane's warning, so she whistles for Yuki and the horse runs over and she jumps on, Niklas gave his life to save the captain, she was not gonna let it go to waste. She rides past behind Camilla and grabs the captain putting her on her horse "Yuki, get to safety" she says jumping off and she turns to Mizuki, determination clear in her eyes, for once though she wishes there were Titans to fight and not humans, she also knows they might not survive if they're attacked now, they're tired and hungry. She glances at Akai from the corner of her eyes, too emotionally drained to fight, Serenity and Astrid in the trees and scouts in the forest, lost forever.

"Wait," Akai advises, reaching out for Victoria to hold her by the shoulder before she rushes into the chaos, "Let's not do anything rash." Truth be told, Akai should follow her own advice. She isn't sure what to make of the situation, not with that cloud of dust, not in this bedlam of high-strung human emotion, not in how fast everything happens. In the blink of an eye, Niklas is dead. Gone with the wind.

She sees everything more clearly once the cloud settles. "She killed him," the woman shrieks, "Why did she kill him?"

"Akai, gather the remaining scouts, then we need a noise as loud as we can possibly have!" Victoria calls towards Akai, if they could lure the Titans here they could leave since there are other humans to be caught then, she puts her dagger away sees there aren't many scouts left anyone "New plan, gather everyone, we have to leave!" she says, they couldn't risk more people dying right now anyway, she's not sure if people will actually listen to her, but it's worth a try, if they don't listen it's their problem.

Mizuki couldn't even remember dealing the blow that killed Niklas Dok. She was hyped up on adrenaline and blinded by rage, fear, and hunger. For all she knew there was a titan before her, and she had to take it out. Time seemed to fast forward for her, one moment she was in the air and the next she was on the ground, her sword stuck inside of something. She yanked the blade out of the body, a small mist of blood spraying over her as she did. She wasn't quite aware of what just happened until a hand fell against her shoulder before collapsing to the floor.
Mizuki dropped her blades to the ground in shock, her legs shaking violently as the realization of what she did caught up to her. She had killed a human, a scout, a leader, a friend. She fell to her knees beside Niklas' body trying to desperately figure out how this had happened. She was trying to kill a titan, she saw it! Yet here she was in front of Camilla the commander, the scouts, and worst of all her squad, the blood of her teammate covering her body. "I'm sorry..." Was all she managed to choke out.

"NIIIIIIK!!!"

Yelled Kane from across the encampment, hand outstretched, a vain gesture as his comrade slumped, eyes vacant, body stiffening to Mizuki's blade.

As her blade loosened, Niklas' blood sprayed a fine mist, and his body fell to the ground with a thud. In that moment, the weight of what had happened hit the rookie with the weight of a cinderblock.

Niklas, who had been an integral part of the mission thus far, who had been a guiding hand for the group, who had saved his life through indirect action, was dead, and not only was he gone, it was at the hands of a fellow scout, an ally, and to Kane, a traitor, who deserved retribution.

Retribution that Kane would deliver as he twisted once more into a violent parody of himself, anger spilling over once more, and without thinking he grappled to Niklas and his murderer.

Had his Jaw been less compacted, he would've let loose an animalistic scream. However his lips were sealed as he streaked silently through the trees, tense hands wrapped around blade handles, ready for the draw.

As he descended upon Mizuki from above, she collapsed to her knees, hovering over the fresh corpse.

"Just like a titan"

Thought Kane, withdrawing his two blades, targeting the back of Mizuki's neck. It would be a clean cut, far too quick a death for such a criminal.

And then, she let loose a crooked pair of damaged words. Heartaching words, the guilt palpable, the confusion overwhelming.

"I'm... Sorry"

She said, and as he heard the phrase, his rage subsided for a moment as her humanity hit him, halting his blades just in time to stop her decapitation as his blades hovered over her neck in the formation of an X, rattling softly with the shaking of Kane's hands.

IIn the silence, Kane held his ground, blades static, his eyes glancing to his superior officers, waiting for direction, unsure of what step to take next.

"Why did you...? "

"Why?"

Muttered Kane from above Mizuki, words bewildered as his anger was matched only by his confusion.

Chaos, that's the current situation right now, Niklas is dead, people disappear, Akai is an emotional mess and their numbers were halved by now. Now even she was feeling it, exhaustion and stress "I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready to go home" she says, their families would be worried about them, she already had to deliver Bookworm to Lucas' family, she didn't feel like adding telling more people their family died.

Mizuki Kohaku apologises...

It must've been an accident.

Of the scouts who remain, however, they chatter amongst themselves, assuming the worst. Assuming cold-blooded murder. Cold-blooded mutiny.

One of the officials at Camilla the Captain's back is no different, who, with a callosity to his manner of speaking, utters one sentence.

“Off with her head.”

Camilla the Captain shakes hers. “She'll stand trial, Captain Cole,” she explains bitterly, “Stand down, soldier,” A look is cast to Kane Foster, then to the men and women at her back, “Restrain this woman for the ride to Wall Maria.” Her order is fulfilled in a matter of seconds by the other officials--sergeants and the like. She commands them with an authority almost regal.

She comes down from her horse and crouches with her landing. She dismisses Niklas Dok's body, merely another casualty to a count in the hundreds, and declares to all the scouts around in authoritative address, “Here you all are. We're heading home. The mission is complete. You all need rest. Food, too, it seems. There are some rations in the carts behind me, enough to sustain you for our ride to Wall Maria. We recovered most of the horses. If yours isn't present, my apologies. Find yourself a cart to ride in. Not that one, however... Not that one with the box.”

“I'll collect reports when we reach the Walls,” Camilla the Captain states, “From these reports, I'll deliberate with the other officials and determine whose valour on these dark days are most suited for raises in rank. I'm aware of the losses. I saw them. All of them. I checked all of their faces. Identified them. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles will have their peace. They'll know, with the utmost of certainty, what happened to their kin.”

“And how they fought,” seethes Cole sardonically from horseback, kicking his steed for a change direction, “Get a move on, Camilla. Save the spiel for when we're safe behind the Walls.”

(New arc starting soon)

She finds her horse with the others. When she mounts her horse, stepping onto the stirrup iron, she looks glancingly at Victoria from across the wooded tract. "Same here," whispers the woman, settling herself in horseback, "Time to leave all of this behind." For some reason, Akai feels sick to her stomach. This sickness lasts for the ride to Wall Maria. Mayhaps the widow's sickness comes from the memory of her husband's death along with the Redwood Massacre, mayhaps how Mizuki's sword so swiftly slew Niklas, mayhaps, even, morning sickness.

Almost as sudden as Niklas' death, the camp had packed and shifted from the forest at the commanders word. It was incredible really, how despite everything that had happened, the scouts still worked efficiently, following their orders to a T as they mounted their horses, leaving Kane, a straggler, behind, as he approached the equine mass of lost horses in search of Shilling.

Perhaps it was the numbness, he pondered, the drone like depression that had sunken into every man and woman beyond the wall. Perhaps it was that defeatism and loss that pacified them, gluing them to their orders. Or maybe the acceptance of death that all presumed would come their way one day or another. Whatever it was, Kane was certainly not immune, as he too fell in line.

Taking his mind from such thoughts, he perked his head up, straightening his slacked posture, looking for his granite gray mount, for any sign that he was still among the ranks.

"Shilling!"

"Where are you Shilling?!?! "

"SHILLING!!!"

Yelled Kane, making his way through the stirring croud, angling through the beasts and scout alike, before, at last, he found his horse, standing idly, playing deaf with a mouthful of grass in his flat toothed Jaw.

With the first legitimate smile in some time, the scout mounted his horse, and the two made their way from the mob, making speed to catch the othersm

Some time later, Kane caught up to the scouts ahead. He knew not to feel safe or relieved, but he did so anyway as he fell in with his brothers and sisters in arms. As they opened the throttle so speak, entering a full gallop towards home, a gate opened, Kane's humanity returned, and so too did dulled memories of lost friends, of murdered comrades, of innocence lost.

And thus, as Kane Foster rode at the rear right flank of the scout mob, without realizing it himself, without a sound, the young scout began to cry blankly, eyes staring ahead as his mind reconsiled what horror he had seen.

Victoria follows Akai on Yuki as she pulls Bookworm along next to her, she doesn't say anything though as she idly strokes the manes of her horse, for once she hoped her family wasn't there, they never liked seeing her this way, all cheerfulness she had left seems gone right now, she glances at Bookworm and smiles ever so slightly remember Lucas' last words "Can't tell him anything anymore now can I?" she thinks looking back ahead "At least he's out of this horrible place" she mumbles to herself.

Mizuki flinched forwards as Kane’s blades nearly cleaved her head off. It was strange to think that a fellow soldier might be the one to slay her. Perhaps that what Niklas was thinking when he died. Surprising to her, Captain Camilla ordered that she wasn’t killed and would be given a fair trial, which was somewhat of a relief. Although she’d always talk about death being part of the job, when it came down to it she didn’t want to die. All she could hope for now was imprisonment rather than a public hanging. She remained quiet and kept her eyes focused on the ground as a small group of scouts apprehended her and threw her in a cart. Her ODM and blades were stripped from her and her hands bound behind her back. It was uncomfortable but it didn’t matter. All that mattered now was her impending trial.
