Anima 1872 (Private)

//The year is 1872. This is not a time of fairytales and secret princesses, monster exist and they thrive in this dark age. Heinous crimes are committed each day, most by criminally dangerous individuals. It is a sure task for the police to seek these individuals out. But what happens when you dig to deep and find an answer that shouldn't exist. Politicians tip toe around strange disappearances and gruesome crimes in forests, the police left clueless when footprints lead through concrete walls. These cases are closed, hidden and forgotten. This does not mean it is the end of these cases. For some it is only the beginning .

For such individuals policing is more than investigation, more than questioning, for them it is a hunt and the safety of the public is at hand. People do not know these men and women, and that is how it should be, they don the guise of detectives, this is their story, these are their hunts.//

The clutter in the office was the same as always, the curse of travelling police men they called it, with no real crimes to close there was no easy way to store all this information, some had attempted books or folders to categorise their notes and findings but that turned out to be an endless and thankless task and so paper grew on desk gone dusty with a lack of use, the air was kept smoky by the individuals who used the office, there was always someone there reading notes, gathering their thoughts or waiting for their next assignment, the players formed the latter having just solved the case of the midnight imps, a horrendously boring and slow task that resulted in caging the imps in traps, they have since been refocused in the vaults under the office where science and magic combine in cruel but necessary works, in this age of hidden monsters there was no room for morality it was the lives of innocents saved that drove most in this line of work.

"the next one for you" Chief inspector k dumped a folder on one of the desks. "this one should be more exciting for you" he puts his cigar back in his mouth and heads to the office.

The folder is thicker than usual, this can mean many things, lots dead? Many missing? Maybe the police efficiently gather evidence and wrote credible details of the crime (the latter being a miracle) perhaps several reports had been made and they had all been lumped together. Warren Aschtz //the driver for the group// picks up the folder. His face sinks, the others recognise it instantly children, not much was known about Warrens past, but he was ruthless efficient and eternally pissed off when children had been harmed.

Green, black, red and blue. He laid the folder out the coloured ribbons hung from the inside of the folder. Children, Missing persons, No leads, magic detected. It would certainly be more interesting than last time. The destination northern Germany the village of Dettelschied (fictional its really annoying getting a map of Germany in 1872).

"I'll go prepare the Coach we'll leave as soon as we are already, ill ensure we have all the necessary tools."

Lidfard scoops up the folder, and indicates it as he starts to speak "This is going to be a tough one, I know that you have seen many things and so have I, but a case like this, its unlikely you will forget it."

With that he looks gravely at his young apprentice as if searching for something in his features; With a grunt he turns and starts to walk away.

"Well don't just stand there, come on. We have a monster to catch, We'll read this in the carriage."

Kan grabs his katana off its stand and fastens it onto his side with his kimono. He looks at the bowler hat and duffle coat Lidfard insists he wear and grumbles but still refuses to wear them, preferring to be comfortable and mobile in the attire he has been accustomed to for all these years. Why should one man change another's tradition?

Kan leaves to follow Lidfard to the carriage catching a glimpse of himself in a mirror, shoulder length silver hair tied in a top knot and a stark white face younger than the hair would suggest, as it has always been.

As you enter the carriage and close the door, Warren sets off on the journey ahead, as the driver it was more important for him to know the destination than the details of the case, certainly the others would fill him in when they next had a chance. Inside the wagon the other two were browsing through the files for any clue, so far 8 children had gone missing in accordance with this case. the 2 were the sons of a local baker, one a farm hand, another was the daughter the general store owner and another daughter of the woodsman, and the others were not noted as children with any important links to the village of Dettelschied.

The town itself is simple and small with one church, one store, and most of the workers either working either on nearby fields and land or out in the local copper mine, the towns main income came from the exports of their raw materials, but could in no way be considered a well off town. the constabulary consists of just two officers, dealing mainly with petty disputes than any real crime.

a not falls out of the folder and you pick it up, it consists of a couple of sketches, it becomes quickly obvious that this was done by the preliminary dark watch officer (Your bureau is known as the dark watch, but only between yourselves, remember to everyone else you're detectives from the Berlin Bureau) it consists of rough magic seals, and a not saying taken from the bones of dead animals in the surrounding area, source unknown, purpose unknown.

none of the bodies of the children have been found and most presume them to be dead, but till the bodies are recovered that is not certain and are to be treated as missing.

Seeing the sketches as a potential opportunity to teach his companion about the intricacies of the occult, he quickly confers with his companion

"Well Kan, what do you think these symbols could be? what are their purpose?" Lidfard stares at Kan gauging his face as he waits for a response

//please tell me how to perform skill checks; I want to perform an occult check at the same time; Occult Skill Check of: 83+17 = 100//

This reminds me of a case, I once worked, in southern germany, near the swiss border, where a shaman was trying to teach trolls magic... That was a sorry state of affairs ended brutally; But enough of that, there are children who may need our help"

"did you pack your suit kan? Hm, probably not, The lord knows how long I have been trying to get you into something more... civilised shall we say" mused Lidfard

//To perform an Ability Check, roll 1D100 and add that number to the ability score being used. For this type of roll open rolls (criticals) or Fumbles are possible, combined total is your skill check (Difficulty will be determined by me ofc :P ) (an open roll is when you roll 90+ then you can roll another D100 and add those together each successive open roll is harder so if you need 90 on the first one you can get an additional open roll on a roll of 91+ then 92+ and so on 100 is always considered an open roll, hopefully that makes sense, (page 5 in book for your reference)) //

//Rolled 64 but as untrained I guess that's 34?//

Kan studies the symbols, he's seen many things on his travels but never symbols that resemble these.

"It seems there is still a lot left for me to learn in the world Master Lidfard."

Kan is a man more of meditation and action than academia and investigation. But nevertheless, he has seen the value of knowledge such as Lidfard displays and how it can succeed where the martial arts drew no results.

"You will figure this out, I'm sure." Kan adjusts his kimono. "I am still not sure I would be as effective in such attire Master Lidfard. The rounded hat would likely fall off easily and long thick open dress weigh me down and easily become torn in combat. Why sacrifice comfort and functionality for appearance anyway?"

"Ahhh Kan you are young and energetic, when you reach my age you may learn the value of presence and appearance, not everything is solved through force. Alas I met you too late, I fear I may never truly make you a man of prestige..."

" Truly you make nothing of these symbols? It would appear, that i am not as good a tutor as I had hoped, but I suppose without the gift, it is hard to tell what is real and what I simply superstition, But I suppose we cannot learn everything in one lifetime."

As much as Lidfard criticizes Kan for not knowing the nature of the symbols he himself is truly unaware of their exact purpose, despite the hidden power of the circle parts of the mare familiar to you, a small section is reminiscent of the coven of the nymphs case you solved a few years back where they used blood to store magic power, the purpose of the ritual is unknown as you stopped it before completion. another small section also stands out but you know very little of its origins or its purpose, you remember seeing symbols fairly similar in the relation to transferal rituals, but the texts are old and oft translated so its true purpose and power is no more than a well evaluate guess.

"Hmm well, it appears that not even I can make much from this, perhaps I am to hard on you Kan, But I fear that I wont live for ever and when it comes, I wont be able to watch your back, so you must be able to watch your own."

"lets see what I can make of it though, These remind me of a Coven of nymphs I once investigated many a year ago. Treacherous little creatures, mischief and magic are their main tools, be careful when you ever encounter them. Oh what am I saying, you know this, how many times now have you read Creatures Mundane and Magical: A Watchman's Guide now, I dare say you know it better than I. Though the truth be told I find the author a Mr G. Blüm [use alt+129 to get the U) to be a tad pretentious.

"hmmm, Bakers, Woodsmen and farm hands, few of these children hold any real power, though they are essential to the town... What do you make of these children Kan, Do you see a connection? I fear I spend too much time in the city to understand the workings of small villages these days."

"Hmmm, I have heard of children being used for many things in the past, being sought for youth, innocence, virginity. There's a possibility they may be used as ritual sacrifice. I don't wish to jump to too many conclusions, you can read the facts better than I." Kan bows to Lidfard's superior knowledge.

//Making a history check of 73, feel free to edit post accordingly.//

And so the journey continues with much speculating and talking in circles, the pair only ending up agreeing that until they gather more information neither of them will know the secrets this case holds. As it draws into late evening the pair hear Warren talking with a man outside the coach when the conversation stops warren knocks on the roof of the coach. you have arrived. As you step out of the coach you find yourself outside one of the few local inns.

Warren smiles "ah some comfort at last, well i dont think we will find another place this late in the eve and there is even a barn near by in which we may store the wagon, the in keep knows of our profession and will help us with our police investigation as much as he can in the morning i have paid for 3 beds, and a meal for this eve and morning, ill be in shortly ill just sort out the carriage."

As you step into the Inn it is fairly respectable with none of the messy hustle and bustle of a large towns tavern, a few locals sit and mutter whilst they eat their evening meals and drink the local brews, they are dressed as could be expected from a small village as this, with common clothing that is rugged and warn yet acceptable in such rural communities. All though all the people in the inn have looked at you at least on a small group at the end of the room look at you a bit longer than the others then cast their eyes down and continue muttering, no laughter or smiles can be heard nor seen from their table, no game or food just drinks and aura of down cast men. A man beckons you over to the bar counter where three plates and mugs await. "Officers please be seated its not much you'll be used to with your city ways but your must be hungry and this is all we got. Now as you can see were a little busy this evening (you get the feeling he isn't joking and truly believes this is a busy inn) so i can offer you more assistance till the morning, but i'll 'elp as much as i can then." he walks back to some of the locals to server more beer, you notice a much younger woman also serving drinks, looking at her face you guess fairly safely that she is his daughter.

Warren enters the inn again and seats himself by you, the inn keep gives him a friendly nod as he spies him. warren begins to eat he food with fervor "So where do we start then? and what do i need to know?" after a long journey his manners always slip, but then you can only imagine the tedious boredom that comes from steering a coach without conversation. The food is good, the Local brew is strong but fruity with a nice forest fragrance.

//Also to note whilst they stare at you due to your clothing (nicer than theirs) and that your strangers in a small town, many of them also laugh and snigger at Kan (between themselves ofc not to his face, he may look funny but they are also aware he is of higher social standing than them)//

Kan holds his head high and keeps his composure, being a man of honour which somewhat makes up for his lack of adherence to social etiquette of the modern world instead steeped in tradition. He has seen this class divide even in Japan with more accepting Western culture and it's influence and abandoning their own culture.

As much as he feels the ridicule in the eyes of most he encounters, Kan is determined to hold onto his heritage and reluctant to give it up so easily. At the least he seems comfortable with Mr Lidfard who has been accommodating, and not shown disdain as others have. Kan can tolerate his efforts to assimilate him into society, he has earned his respect and benefit of the doubt. So he owes him at least the consideration of trying to fit in.

"Do you have any dry white wine?" Kan asks the inn keep. It's the closest thing he's found to Sake in the West, and it has helps with the efforts to garner acceptance as being socially acceptable here. The wine is also something he has become used to in the city life, less time has been spent in villages of late. "Mr Lidfard will explain the details, but their have been disappearances we're to look into."

"As you will; Children are missing, some notables, most linked to the survival of this town; bakers, farm hands, wood cutters, the lifeblood of any community such as this, and their offspring after them; But these are just a few of the children that have gone missing. There have been symbols similar to those we encountered when we hunted the Coven of Nymphs; remember it? beyond that there is not much to be found, this is definitely a case requiring a little bit of leg work." Lidfard raises his beer and takes a swig; definitely of poorer quality than which might be found in cities, it still hits the spot.

"if you will excuse me I will announce ourselves, in a town such as this they will all know of us by morn might as well make a good first impression; keep an eye on the dour individuals in the corner, see how they react to my message"

Rising and turning to face the Inn Lidfard raises his voice to speak to the room.

"Gentlemen. Ladies. I am chief Inspector Lidfard Holkeri and this is my assistant Arata Kan. And this is Officer Warren Achtz. I'm sure most of you know about the missing children, I have been assigned to finding them and those responsible for their disappearance. In time we may need some or all of your assistance in this investigation. I hope you give it freely as the law in recent years has been a little grey on what force is acceptable to use on those with-holding information in cases involving children. But for tonight enjoy yourselves, the investigation starts tomorrow. Barkeep a drink for each man who comes in tonight, add it to my tab, Warren will be handling my expenses and will see you properly compensated."

With that done, Lidfard sits down with his friends once again to continue his drink.

"Well, did you see anything of interest?"

"hmm those men in talked a bit more then they all passed some money to one of their fellows, i supposed they were betting on who we were" 2 of the men stand up from the table and with a nod to the bar keep leave the inn.

The talk in the Inn is now a little quietened but still going, you got a few cursory nods in greeting when you were giving your speech, but no one really seems all that eager to seek you out for conversation.

"im exhausted from that journey here i believe i will bid you gentlemen good night for this evening" he beckons over the barkeep and explains that he wishes to retire for the night, he then gets his daughter to show him to the room whilst he continues to serve the local patrons.

"Goodnight, ill see you in the morning. Early. But I think that I will retire as well."

Lidfard rises and walks over to the dour looking gentlemen. "Gentlemen, I fear that this solemn party is one that I see to often in my work, I will not ask you to be cheery, I know these times are hard, but please help me find your children, in over 20 years, I have only failed to apprehend a single one of my targets; and I assure you that I do not intend to let another slip through my fingers. Till your children are found and returned I am yours, I hope you will return the service. Goodnight."

With that Lidfard goes upstairs to find his room.

Kan finishes his drink and rises to his feet. He says nothing, but bows his head to the barkeep and then to the room, as is his custom, before leaving to locate his appointed room.

And so you all retire for the night, nothing happens between this time and morning. so you all wake up feeling rested. the rooms are spare but clean with simple wooden furniture and a bed, your breakfast is also a simple hearty affair, probably composing of an egg some sort of smoke meat, porridge and some bread, you estimate the time to be about 8am (quite a normal time for you folks to be awake).

Warren is already eating by the time you get downstairs.

Kan comes down the stairs and seats himself, nodding to Warren. Silently he picks up the knife and fork, and begins eating, devoting his attention to it. He reflects on his morning meditations and clears his mind, the flavours of each item of food his sole focus. The mind is sharper when not troubled by worries and after proper sustenance. Once breakfast has been consumed, then proper thought can be given to the case at hand.

Upon finishing he acknowledges Warren again and looks to Lidfard. "So where do we start?" Kan sits back in his chair, showing his satisfaction towards the breakfast. "Are there particular families that have been targeted? Or families that..." This he says more quietly. "Have not shown concern or been trouble by the disappearances? I don't wish to seem insensitive, but we should explore all possibilities, should we not?"

"Indeed this is a delicate situation we are outsides in a small town, all the men will know who we talk to and when, yet anyone of them could be responsible, we will have to act quickly and carefully so as not to lose our mark."

"I know that I appear to be a man of status, and this will set others against us, let us not start with the mayor, rather let us start with the farmers and woodsmen, they will know the goings and rumors better than most, they will also know the land of these parts."

Finishing up his meal, Lidfard sits and muses a moment. "So the farmer or the woodsman? Where would you start Kan? and Why?"

Kan ponders, collecting his thoughts before speaking.

"The woodsman first, for they will have seen more of the land, and frequent areas more likely for disappearances to have occurred. Also the woods are more likely a place for them to have been taken. Though we should not be quick to accuse, rather asking for assistance and who may have seen or heard anything of note."

Sounds like a good start after that we may even try to find the location of those symbols our colleague found, see if we might find any additional clues, it would be unlikely though due to the diligence our scouts take. but anyway I shall ask the bar keep for the location of the woodsman.

Warren walks over to the inns bar and begins a conversation with the barkeep a little laughter is heard and a mood noticeably drops as they begin to talk about the investigation, its with sadness that the barkeep looks at warren not chagrin, clearly this is a matter that saddens many in such a small village. the conversation continues a while, and the barkeep calls over his daughter who joins the conversation for a short while.

Warren returns to the table shortly afterwards "the barkeep says its a good place to start he is a secluded man who lives with his remaining eldest son, his daughter will show us the way once we are ready" warren waits patiently for you to ready yourself.

Kan nods then rises from the table. He bows to the barkeep, then to Lidfard and Warren. "Thank you for the food, please excuse me, I will meet you outside." Kan makes his way to the facilities.

Lidfard rises and straightens himself, Age was slowly creeping into his bones these days, he was no spring chicken after all. But it would still be many years before he was ready to give this up.

"My thanks barkeep, you set a good table." Lidfard then turns to the barkeeps daughter. "My lady if you would be so kind to join me." Lidfard raises his arm for the barkeeps daughter to take "and show the way to the woodcutters, I hope that I might bend your ear a little. Village gossip holds more truth than city politicking I assure you, so tell me all that you have heard in the last few months, before and following the first disappearance and the order of them, Be accurate and be honest, none will blame you for not knowing."
