PROLOGUE: Out of Time

You awaken, though do not remember ever falling asleep. Around you is an environment that is entirely unfamilliar, filled with equally unfamiliar people. You may attempt to call upon a power or strength that you once had, only to feel mere whispers in response. Something is feeding off you, although distant, you can feel it squeezing on your life force like a Capri Sun. It's not pleasant.

Where are you? Good question. It appears to be some kind of tavern, candlelight from above spills over furnished wooden chairs and tables, a bar in the corner is set with pewter tankards and stools. Everything seems natural enough, well everything apart from the infinite black void from beyond the building's windows.

The other patrons, all stood around you, seem equally confused as to just how they got here. Not one of them has any ounce of fashion sense whatsoever.

A young woman in drab monk robes, clutching an open ragged book in one hand with her free hand raised, stares in disbelief at all of you from a few paces away. It's apparent that she's the one who summoned you here, though she immediately hugs her book and retreats to the far corner of the room as her awe wears off.

What the hell is happening? Another good question, though the malevolent sap on your energy is making it hard to think of a rationalization. Perhaps you should interact with the other patrons to find out what's going on, maybe even order a drink while you wait for an owed explanation from whoever decided to summon you here.

Welcome to Ancient Horrors and Where to Find Them! This RP is centered around a rag-tag group of heroes (fandom and OCs) from various universes working together to thwart a demonic cult and prevent them from awakening Cthulhu.

Keep in mind that although this RP is at most semi-semi-serious, there will be pretty graphic scenes, and I am not liable for any sleep you may lose from nightmares of Elder Gods consuming our world like a tarlet.

Enjoy!

CS: Fandom - Ancient Horrors and Where to Find Them [Character Sheets]

Tatsu was confused.

One moment he was preparing dinner: sautéed mushrooms with soy butter sauce and garlic — for his adoring, career-driven wife, Miku. The next, Tatsu found himself wrenched into another dimension entirely, and was now standing in the middle of a strange sort of log cabin, surrounded by foreigners. Not just foreigners in terms of ethnicity, either — some appeared to be of a foreign species. A pulsing headache crippled Tatsu's ability to even focus on anything. It was like something plucked a straw into his brain and began sucking on it.

"...I think I cooked the wrong herb." Tatsu muttered, looking down at his hands. Was this all just a hallucination? It seemed so... vivid. He looked up again as the girl with the book ran off. Maybe he ought to try talking to the others in the cabin, surely hallucinations couldn't talk — right?

Use this time in the tavern to interact with other characters, or you can order a drink at the bar or try to talk to the strange girl. Outside the tavern is only a black void, so there doesn't seem to be a way to leave just yet.

Cthulhu's curse is inflicted upon you! Any magic/superhuman abilities you have are greatly diminished until you can find a way to break the curse.

Tails opened his eyes despite not remembering closing them. The first thing he noticed in his squinted vision was the rather bleak lighting, and while that wasn't automatically suspicious, it most certainly wasn't the workshop he had been in moments prior that housed the planes he'd just been working on— extremely far from it, he noted, finally taking in the strange... bar? Certainly one he didn't recognize; not that he frequented bars, of course, but if it were any place local, he figured he'd have some sense of familiarity, even if he'd only seen it from the outside before. This place, he thought looking around from his limited vantage point, in no way reflected the city or even the modern age itself. Maybe it was something he'd find on the islands they used to explore, but definitely not anything that'd be in the cities they resided near now.

If this was some kind of prank, it was one of the weirdest yet. He pushed himself off the ground, something that took way more effort than expected— yeesh! He's crashed planes and felt better than this! Not that... that was something to be proud of. In fact, that being true made this situation a whole lot worse. So once standing, he took the time to observe the area more carefully than just its furnishings. He didn't quite catch what was being said as a girl covered in robes stared at all of them, retreating back with her book with an expression that reminded Tails of the same one he always wore after seeing his own inventions work for the first time.

Was that... a good thing, or...? He opened his mouth to ask just what was going on, tails fretting behind him, before his thoughts caught up with him. Wait a moment, all of them—?

He looked over to the left, then whipped his head over to the right— humans, a good handful of them. No, it wasn't anything uncommon considering he lived near a city mainly occupied by humans, but they weren't anywhere near home, were they? They had to be just as confused as him about this whole thing, considering the tension that seemed to fill the air... and the one who had already ordered drinks.

His ears flattened against his head, not just because of the sight, but mostly out of frustration. His whole body felt heavy, like there were weights tied to all his limbs, even his namesake tails, which he found himself glancing at to make sure weren't injured. They weren't, which only left him more questions as to why they felt so bad. Even after flying for so long, after carrying over three times his own weight, after almost exhausting himself to death, he had never felt like his entire body was attached to the ground in this way. But he'd have to push his own problems aside— this was fishy, and if there was any danger around, he was going to have to stay alert to take it down. ...If only trying to stay alert didn't feel so taxing right now.

There was no way he could answer that person's question— but he really hoped someone else could, since he wanted to know what was going on as much as the other person did. Unfortunately, being surrounded by strangers was somehow more daunting than being— what exactly happened to them? Abduction? Teleportation? Despite all his effort, he couldn't fathom what— somewhere unfamiliar so quickly. Pushing down the nerves that were building up, Tails voiced his own thoughts. "I... think we're all wondering that..." He was addressing the person who'd spoken, though his eyes were focused on the woman in the corner, focused on her and her book. He didn't like staring— he wouldn't have liked it if someone was staring at him, but he couldn't help it.

Frank Castle’s eyes flickered up from the floor after a split second of confusion. His brain rapidly processed the sensory details, though by the time he locked eyes with the girl holding the book, he stopped to let out a groan and massage his forehead. He was drained, physically and mentally.

Hearing the other men grumbling and whining, Frank soldiered on, marching up to the girl who had retreated to her own corner. He stayed just beyond her arms’ reach. “You’re not one of Mephisto’s lackeys,” he growled, glancing at her robes. “How about you spill everything for the nice people you summoned. What’s your gimmick?” His tone still carried a certain threat, as if lying or dodging the question would incite violence.

Notably, the menacing human didn’t ask where he was; that question would be answered soon enough. He could guarantee it.

As Sid Wilson approached the bar, a bored-looking barmaid appeared from behind it, as though she had been looking for something underneath. "Two beers." She parroted, plucking up two pewter tankards and filling them up with a nearby keg. "The old man says it's on the house." She says as she slides the drinks towards Sid. It's not clear who she's talking about.

In response to Sid asking where the hell they were, the barmaid chimed in, "You're in the Black Flagon." She tapped the table, referring to the tavern. "The old man summoned you here for... uh, something. You should ask him when he arrives."

Across the room, the book girl is acutely aware that Tails is staring at her. She tentatively raises the book in front of her face to shield from the awkwardness.

As Frank Castle approaches, book girl shrinks back even further. "I-I'm just an apprentice!" She stammers, trying her best to sound earnest while this absolute unit towers over her. "I was told to summon you here!"

Tatsu scanned over his fellow abductees. Notably, there was a guy in leathers at the bar, an even bigger guy marching on the girl in the corner, and what could only be a giant rat. Tatsu stared blankly at all of them for a moment. Could this be the result of some kind of chemical attack from a rival family? There really was no limit to what yakuza with a grudge would resort to.

"Hey, you there." Tatsu slunk over to the yellow rodent. "What's with the costume? This a convention or somethin' that I've been dragged into?" His piercing eyes roamed over the creature from behind his sunglasses — it was a damn realistic costume.

Eleanor

One of the unlucky souls is a young woman, dressed in dirty white and black clothing. Dark long hair that ends midway behind her back and silver-colored eyes. From what part of the grand tapestry of multi-dimensional space-time continuum was she ripped from?

Fading into a new environment. Finding herself in a local tavern-type establishment, given the contents of the room she's currently in. Slowly raising her face, greeted only by unfamiliar faces in an unfamiliar place. They all look wary and... Weakened..? Looking down towards her gloved hands, she felt like she was in some sort of lethargy. Her hands moved in a slow and almost constrained manner. Is she still asleep? Was she dragged here? Where was she before this?

Sharp pain in her head struck her to remain seated in an attempt to stand up quickly. She too began to look worried. To sit idly is not something she will do. There are multiple different individuals with her, who are all asking the same questions too. One of the first she saw is a shaded man whose looks can raise an eyebrow but along with the others he seems rather normal looking, a masked man who lies his head on a tabletop, drinking away despite the situation they are in, another individual who doesn't even look remotely human but has the characteristics of one, and a large man with a physique of a strong warrior. Who are they? trapped in this tavern with complete who demand answers also.

Something is wrong here, something far worse than this moment she felt. A hooded female figure attempting to flee the scene caught the attention of those around her, perhaps given the state of most characters, they seem to be in good condition, the thought came into her mind. Confusion is the look she gave, slightly disoriented for now. Something else caught her eye, the windows.

Finally gathering the strength to stand up. She walked slowly towards one of the nearest windows on her right, ignoring the strange hooded figure currently being questioned. Coming closer, she could vaguely see a reflection of her own face on the window glass. Looking onto the black void. What is she looking for? Are the windows sealed? Is it nighttime? Her eyes tried to see even a vague shape to at least get a sense of depth.

Frank narrowed his eyes; this magic crap never sat well with him. “Mission accomplished,” he snarked back. “Who told you to summon us?” The interrogation was a breeze thus far; the book girl put up no resistance and seemed honest. He surmised her master’s plans for him didn’t involve stealing his soul... though in his current condition, it sure felt like that was the case.

When he saw the woman raise her book in front of her face, Tails sheepishly looked away, feeling the awkwardness just as much as she had— his tails lowered, coming down as if trying to hide. He was so caught up in thinking about what she thought that he almost missed the information spoken from the bartender some feet away: Black Flagon? Sounded... like a cliché medieval shop name, if he was honest. Now that he thought about it... this place was themed in that manner. But... he wasn't aware of any medieval-themed restaurants around. How odd.

The tone of the man approaching the book girl made him perk up— not exactly in a positive way, though. Well, that was one way to get answers, but he couldn't say he approved of it. There wasn't much time to mull on it, though, before his view of the situation is overshadowed by an... apron? Of course it's not just an apron, but a tall man with sunglasses covering his eyes despite the candle lighting in the building, he found looking up.

"C-Costume?! No, I'm—" He paused, a clear bout of confusion and surprise plastered on his face. Sure, he'd been asked if his second tail was part of a costume or fake, but he'd never been asked if his entire appearance was something for a con. Even if they mostly lived separately, humans and mobians were all still at least aware of each other's existence. The question was unfathomable, and he found himself taking a small step back. It didn't... sound like mockery, did it? In all honesty, he wasn't too sure, but he continued with an answer, anyway. "I'm... a fox? I don't know what's going on here, either."

Screenshot 2021-09-09 at 8.36.20 am.png
Tatsu leaned forward, lifting his sunglasses with a finger to squint at the fox. "...A kitsune?" His eyebrows knotted as he studied the creature. Unconsciously, he reached out to pet it — then abruptly retracted his hand as his self-control returned. "Ah— well... thank you for clarifying." Tatsu stood upright, not even attempting to rationalize why he was thanking a talking fox.

Attention snagged, Tatsu turned toward the commotion behind him, to where the soldier guy was grilling the book girl. "Hey, that's enough." He approached, sliding himself between them. Only up close did Tatsu realise just how much bigger solider guy was — he chose to ignore that fact. "She's just a kid." Tatsu nodded back to book girl, who seemed vaguely insulted. "If some boss wanted us summoned us here, I'm bettin' he'll introduce himself real soon."

Across the room, the barmaid notices a teen girl staring out the window. "You won't see anything out there." The barmaid says. "This dimension is entirely seperate from anything else. The old man likes it that way."

Frank’s line of questioning was abruptly cut off by some man wearing sunglasses indoors. That small detail didn’t sit well with the vigilante; the only people he knew who wore sunglasses in these lighting conditions were mafiosi, blind, or mutants with eye lasers. He leaned to the side, his head poking over the interloper’s shoulder. “I’ll be waiting for your boss,” Castle briefly grumbled to the girl before letting her go. “Who are you?” he then returned, unfazed by the guy’s entreatment.

GODZILLA

Darkness.
That was the last thing he remembered after he left the strange jungle that he had not only fought the ancestor of his lifelong nemesis, but a reincarnation of the beast he had killed many moons back. The giant he fought against had helped him overcome the reincarnated beast that had taken the form of his own being, and if it wasnt for that giant, he would have died.

With his own life indebted to the giant, he chose not to continue the battle between himself and it, and instead returned to the ocean, where he needed to rest. He had reached the cave he used as his resting grounds, and after laying down next to the skull of his ancient enemy, his own eyes closed. Several moments of rest, and then his senses went off. Something was horribly wrong. His eyes shot wide open, the rage in his eyes clear, as a sudden darkness swallowed him.

Godzilla closed his eyes, and opened them to find himself in a strange place. Objects and creatures unfamiliar to him were around him. His tail swished as he was unsure if he was in danger or not. He then spoke, a youthful yet deep voice of a ruler left his mouth.
"Where am I? Why am I here? Who are you creatures?"

1631304199145.png
Tatsu smirked, reaching up as though he was about to remove his sunglasses — except he didn't, as he was adamant that wearing sunglasses made him look cool.

"Name's Tatsu." He flicked his eyes up and down the soldier. "Let me guess, you're with a family? Hired muscle or somethin'?" Indeed, Tatsu had met a lot of foreigners working for the yakuza. None quite built like this guy, though. Tatsu turned pensive. If GI Joe here was from another family — or even working with the Japanese police — he'd no doubt have recognized the Immortal Tatsu by now.

Any train of thought running in Tatsu's mind instantly screeched to a halt however, as he caught a glimpse of a giant lizard from behind the soldier. "G-Gojira—?" Tatsu turned pale, mouth hanging agape as he beheld the actual physical Godzilla in the room with him. "Mr Gojira!" Tatsu called out, breathing frantically as he hurried over. "I– My wife and I– we– ...can I get an autograph?" His eyes were practically sizzling from behind his sunglasses.

From where Tatsu just was, book girl blinked several times, as if trying to come to terms with what just happened.

"Oh yes! My boss— er, master," Book girl exclaimed, coming back to her senses. "He should be here any moment, he's a good guy I promise." She looked up at the man who had been questioning her, hoping that her master really knew what he was doing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jak fell from a portal and just barely caught himself by rolling on the ground.

"Ugh, yet ANOTHER portal...."

The orange creature fell right next to Jak "Wha... WHERE ARE WE?! That's the last time i drink 2 glasses straight..."

ANDDDDDD.... No way.... Daxter lost his train of thought as his mouth dropped

"Holy shit, is that mmmph.. before he could say it out loud

Jak raised a eyebrow as the long eared man pulled Daxter back onto his shoulder.
"Uh, Daxter... Not such a great IDEA RIGHT NOW"

Instead the eco warrior looked around and observed, there was one lizard creature oddly named Godzilla, Some sort of solider type who could mess up anyone just by looking at them, (probably Commander Torn's type), a yellowish creature with multiple tails, a few humans and some people with robes on.

To the sunglassed man, Tails nodded hesitantly and smally at his thank you, more confused than ever. That was... certainly something; not the weirdest conversation he's ever had— there were a number of contenders already for that— but certainly a... strange one, if it could even be considered a conversation at all. A number of questions ran through his mind, but it was hard to catch hold of one and really think on it with the ache he still had.

With all the talking going on, Tails wasn't really sure where he should concentrate. What he did know was that there was a— dinosaur?! A dinosaur that was relatively human-sized, but still. They didn't look anything like a mobian, and he grew all the more confused— he's been doing that a lot— when the man who'd been talking to him before rushed up to the lizard. He didn't still think this was a convention, right?

The pair that had just started shouting caught his attention. The creature pulled back onto the shoulder didn't make him curious more than the... not-human? He looked sort of human, but his ears said otherwise. Oh well, it wasn't too important.

"Uh, are you guys okay?" he started after getting closer to the two. "That looked like a bad fall..." At least, based on their reactions, it did.

The speculations irked Castle, though his stone face didn’t show it. “More like the fucking bogeyman,” he answered Tatsu flatly. “And you’ve got the stink of Yakuza.” He didn’t recognize the guy, but he knew the statement would apply pressure; enough pressure would squeeze out some juicy info. His hand inched towards one of his Gerber combat knives.

The sudden appearance of new creatures de-escalated a potentially deadly showdown, though it didn’t ease Frank’s tension. Godzilla was all too familiar, having terrorized the big screen... and, at one point, New York. What made little sense was its size; was this some kind of gag? He eased away from the Yakuza man and the book girl to behold the cartoonish spectacle. “We can all see something’s wrong,” he reiterated aloud, taking a seat at an empty table, placing his Colt on the table. “Sounds like Doctor Strange was gathering one hell of a D&D party, and his apprentice brought all the wrong players.”

It was a good time, the chocobos were happy, running alongside the Regalia as they travelled to Hammerhead once more, but then it was dark. Too dark. This wasn't just nighttime, it was-- now a tavern, or bar... When was the last time he had seen one of these? Probably back in Insomnia before the Imperials took it over. Looking around, he noticed several others... though it was clearly nighttime outside, there we re no daemons... unless the giant lizard or the bright colored fox were daemons, but the lizards eyes weren't noticeably bright and no daemons are as bright as the fox were, so he chose to disregard them. A man was standing in the center of the room, almost right next to him, making a fuss. Clearly he's religious, though to which god who knows? There was another man, he kind of looked like Gladio, but bigger and without the same hairstyle or beard... He was really huge though, so there's no way it could possibly be him. The man with sunglasses next to him though, looked like a slightly altered Iggy... they seem similar in the fact that they wore glasses, and occasionally sunglasses indoors. No one seemed to represent Prompto unless the fox counted, but it wasn't really human-like. Only now he came up with his first question. "Where... where is this?"

Another arrival, another potential headache...

Although Frank saw a bit of himself in the knight, likes repel. One of the strange creatures approached him, as if he was well acquainted. Godzilla brought a hand up and pushed Tatsu back to the ground as he scanned the strange place he was in. More odd creatures showed up, one with striking spiky hair and a smaller creature on his shoulder. Another with an blank expression arrived.
Unsure where to proceed from here, he first addressed the creature who called his name.
"I have no idea who you are, or how you know my name. What exactly are you even? You smell like the giant I had to fight in the weird jungle several moons back."

Shadow opened his eyes and sat up. Utterly confused about where he was he just sat there for a minute attempting to gather his thoughts on where he was. Though when he couldn't explain where he was he finally decided to stand up. His gaze traveled along everyone here and no one seemed familiar except a certain fox. His instincts told him to approach the fox first as he was the only one that Shadow knew but he was also curious about who everyone else was.

Torn between approaching Tails or someone else Shadow decided he'd just do what he always did in some sort of group gathering. He walked to the far back corner and crossed his arms over his white chest fur, and observed what everyone was doing, trying to listen in on some of the conversations taking place around him.

Noctis stood up and made his way over to the bar, wary of the large man. He seemed dangerous, but he had chosen to give a recap of what he knows, so he couldn't be that bad. At least not nearly as bad as Ardyn who was full of illusions and things not to trust. Sure he held a gun, but gun's are cowards weapons where he's from... and Prompto only used guns. So much for thinking highly of his best friend. Sitting on the stool close to the Punisher, he'd swivel around to the two who came before him... a shorter man and what looked to be an otter? "This man says he knows and can catch us up since we're new here." He'd stick a thumb to the Punisher. showing Jak and Daxster who he meant. Then, a new creature showed up. IT looked like the fox in a way, but still not quite the same. Maybe he shouldn't try to judge everyone here, so he turned back over to the Punisher, he'd give a questioning look, clearly waiting for the explanation.

Shadow The Hedgehog
Boom Shadow.jpg
Letting out a deep breath, Shadow's eyes fell to the ground. He just stood there knowing he should talk to someone but he wasn't much of a talker. Even if he did try to find out he wasn't good with starting the conversations. Shadow closed his eyes and allowed his memories of the past to return. He may not know how he got here, and it was obvious he was weaker, he still had his memories of the ark. Memories he'd usually not allow to find their way into his mind if he was awake.

He didn't know why but for some odd reason his mind went back to Maria's death. His eyes quickly opened and he murmured to himself, "Damn it."

Allowing his gaze to travel over the group again this time he noticed something he hadn't before. Tails and himself were the only mobians he could see. This regeristatered as odd in his mind as if anything, Sonic would likely have been closer to Tails so why is he here? Were certain people chosen to show up here? If so why was he chosen? Why was everyone who was here, here? What was here?

Finally, Shadow decided he needed answers and he approached Tails. "Hey, fox, where the hell are we?" There was a demanding tone to his voice as he asked this.

In the middle of the commotion, the tavern's heavy wooden door flew open — heralding a figure in dark, hooded robes. Stepping out of the void the way one might step out of a thunderstorm, the figure paced into the centre of the room, the door breezing shut behind them. Slowly, the figure set back their hood, revealing their face to the summoned. It was an old man, with long silver hair and a full beard tied neatly into knots. Most notably, across his eyes was a stretch of plain white fabric. A blindfold.

"You are wondering why you are here. Why we brought you here." The old man spoke, his deep voice seeping into the very pores of the wooden structure. "Summoning you all here was no small feat, the very essence of magic is dying. A corrupt entity feasts on its energy, on all of you. Even those of non-magic blood can feel its teeth in their veins from all across the black gulfs of space. This is but the beginning. Soon an ancient and horrible nightmare will awaken, and with it, the universe as we know it will enter a dark age not seen since the beginning of time." Reaching up, the old man began unwinding the fabric across his face, revealing the glazed milky eyes underneath. "There is no fighting this creature. To even gaze upon it drives men to madness. It has no weakness to be exploited, as its physical body is merely an extension of its true form. Even now, after eons of imprisionment, its tendrils have worked their way across the cosmos, bending the minds of mortals to its will." With a wave of his hand, a wooden chair from across the room skittered over, which he promptly settled into. "This is why I have brought you here. You are by no means prisoners, you may return to your homeworlds if you wish — but know that if this ancient evil is awakened, your world will be consumed along with the rest. I ask of you, of all of you, to help spare the universe from this terrible fate." He bowed his head, re-applying the bandage across his eyes. "You all no doubt have questions, I will do my best to answer them, but please make haste — there is not much time."

An old guy appeared! Ask him some questions!
