StrixDesmodus

Totally human, I swear!
First and foremost, I want prospective applicants to know that there should be as much humor and lightheartedness as foreboding and drama. Classes include Calculus of Doom and Everything You’re Not Supposed To Do, after all.
This doesn't mean there won't be violence, references to sensitive topics, facetious humor, debauchery, a general darkness of tone, and other content that may be considered objectionable. Characters may be evil in ways that reflect real-life ideologies, but please don't be evil on your side of the fourth wall.
RPN rules and basic etiquette apply to what behavior is expected from roleplayers.

  • If you don't understand what somebody else means, ask for clarification. There is no shame in it, and if anybody gives you flak about it then it is not your fault.
  • Hostility on our side of the fourth wall is needless. If you cannot discuss matters in a decent fashion then you are reprehensible.
  • Please be patient with delays, as they may come due to unforeseen circumstances and last longer than intended.
  • Let everyone know if you are permanently dropping out of the rp.
  • Insensitive language belongs to insensitive characters. Ableist, racist, ageist, sexist, or otherwise expressly prejudiced language is prohibited from third person narrations and descriptions. If you use it by accident, or if it's something that doesn't have connotations that are too bad, it can be excused, since many people don't know any better ways to phrase things. I won't hold it against you as long as I know it's an honest mistake, but I will probably ask you to change it.
  • Differences in style or creative ability are welcome here. Write script style, novel style, or anything outside and in between; Be as loquacious or laconic as you please.
  • You may not control another person's character, or make big changes to them without the consent of the roleplayer that made them.
  • When interacting with others, whether in or out of character, make sure that they are comfortable with what you or your character will do. A rule of thumb is to ask for the other roleplayer/s permission before your character does something not PG-rated to another character. A warning is not enough. Consent is key.
  • When shipping students, the maximum age difference allowed is one year.
  • You may make as many characters as you want.
  • If you make more than one character, give each one a different position. Like if you only make two characters, you can have a staff member and a student villain, but you can't have two student villains. You can have more than one character in the same position, but you also have to have another character in another position. For instance, you can have two expendables and a student henchman. Exception: You may have more than one unranked character even if you don't have other characters of other ranks, as long as they come to be different ranks from each other later.
Also, while not mandatory, it is recommended that everybody make at least one confirmed expendable.
  • You must give your characters a relatively probable age, unless you have a good explanation.
  • Your character's primary trait should not be their sexuality.
  • Please no canon characters from recent media, even AU versions. You can use a picture for a faceclaim, or reference canon characters in the chat or roleplay, but that's the extent of it. "Canon" characters from folklore and certain public domain works are a gray area, and their acceptance as characters in this rp will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
  • Do not roleplay as a recognizeable real-life person, even an alternate version of them, if they lived within three centuries of now. If you need a character who fills a real-life role such as the leader of a real country, make up a fictional character to replace them in-rp.
  • You may use any medium to convey your character's appearance.
  • The deadline for character creation is the beginning of the second day in rp time, unless there's a reasonable explanation for why your character is arriving later in the school year.
  • Please wait a minimum of four minutes after the last narrative post is made to post your response.
  • Please stay with this roleplay as long as you can, and do not permanently leave while your character is interacting with somebody else's.
  • Let everybody know if you are leaving the rp permanently
  • If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll answer when I can, and update the rules if need be. No worries, I'll let everybody know when the rules are updated, and the amendments will appear both in this post and in an additional one

The Universe
This takes place in a slightly to moderately futuristic setting, where the existence of magical creatures has been well known since just after WWII. The location is northern Ohio, though students may come from a variety of places.
Magical creatures vary, even those of the same general type. A vampire, for example, may have great magical prowess or have very weak magic, may suffer no ill effects from direct sunlight or may be subject to a variety of sunlight induced maladies.
Mythological, religious, and folkloric figures such as the Devil, Santa Claus, and Odin all exist in this universe, and may interact with our characters.
It is becoming commonplace for people to openly and unironically identify as being evil, and there is even a political lobby going on to make it constitutionally illegal to discriminate against people for being evil.

The School
A blocky, ominous building with an asymmetrical, layout sort of L shaped, sort of shaped like a triangle. It is modeled after a castle to the extent that it even has slots for crossbows, and it stands four storeys high with two additional levels underground. The property is located in a rural area, not far from town, and has many acres of field and forest, as well as an outdoor pool, a stable, a volunteer maintained garden, and a picnic area. Most of the forest is off limits to students, and is separated from the rest of the property by a three board wooden fence, with chicken wire buried underneath to keep the god-knows-what in the woods from digging through.
The school has an eccentric indoor design, with an abundance of rooms with various purposes. The supplies are well stocked, not that the staff do not constantly complain about how low the budget supposedly is.
Staff and students come in various species, including humans.
The School is headed by Oak Bergman, it's founder, who named the school after a prominent figure in the US's Evil community.

The School Rules
This school boasts a lax set of rules, and some nefarious actions can even get you extra credit, but that doesn't mean there aren't things that you can't get away with if caught.

  • Students are not allowed to attack teachers.
  • Students must not destroy school property without permission.
  • Students may not partake in debauchery.
  • Students aren't allowed to directly sabotage student's studies without permission from a teacher. Sabotaging other students by attacking them, cursing them, or attempting to murder them is encouraged.
  • Students may wear anything as long as they are actually clothed, except on field trips and inspection days, when they will wear the uniform.
  • Students may leave campus only with written administrative permission.
Naturally, there are repercussions should the rules be broken, including run-of the mill procedures such as detention and in-school suspension. However, these are not the only things that might be done should a student break policy- They may be temporarily or even permanently demoted to the rank of Expendable. (See "Student Rankings.")

Security Measures and Disciplinary Action
Because not everyone is at TLI willingly, the school takes measures for the prevention, remediation, and punishment of rulebreaking. For those who are not motivated to participate in classes and other duties, psychological manipulation such as threats of harm to their self or family are implemented. Whether those threats get carried out is unconfirmed, but nobody who has taken the risk and escaped has made it far enough to make a reliable claim, or at least not yet. What can be confirmed, and is implemented frequently, is the usage of anchoring spells on students and other captives. These spells are typically used at the command of administrative staff in the event that a student is caught leaving campus without permission. They may also be put into place at the request of a student's parent or guardian.
Should any rule be broken, students may face nearly any kind of punitive action, ranging from simple detention, to a one-time encouragement for other students to target the offender, to an official demotion to the rank of expendable. The proportion of punishment to infraction varies greatly and is dependent on factors such as which staff member is enforcing, to whether or how the student contests the accusations they receive.

Admissions and Arrivals
Students from various realms are sourced with a variety of methods, from being enrolled by their parents or guardians, to being kidnapped, to coming on their own, and beyond.
When students are kidnapped for TLI, they are usually selected at random by administrative staff. From there, contractors seek them out, capture them, and bring them to the Institute. Common drop-off locations include the front lawn, the back garden, the cafeteria, and the student lounge.

Rooming
The rooms are all co-ed, and some house two students while others house three, some yet house four; As well, if any of the students in the room is ranked expendable, the higher ranking students may elect to kick them out.
There are dorm formats are variable, but each is typically arranged as private quarters in a horseshoe around a common area.
The dorms are located in the center of the school, in line with the main entrance and behind the auditorium. To the immediate east of the dorms and lounge is the cafeteria and kitchens; To their immediate west is the the clinic and infirmary.
Staff who live onsite get private apartments in a building separate from the main school.

Student Classifications
After the first two weeks of school, students will be assigned classifications based on what either they have been enrolled for, or for what the school decides for them based on their personality, species, ethnic background, interests, and skillset. Their classification may not be determined immediately after your analysis, but usually it is.
The following is a list of examples, by no means complete. Note that a student may have more than one classification.

  • Macro Dictator - If you show prowess in government, leadership, propaganda, public speaking, and usurpment.
  • Micro Dictator - If you can't really pervert a country or just don't want to, you could always hold random people prisoner.
  • Cultist - They come as they please, but they'd better not leave. Also, have they found Cthulhu yet? I kind of lost him.
  • Mad Scientist, Biological - If you are fond of torturing others, science, vivisection, and bioengineering, as well as going against scientific and traditional morality, here goes.
  • Mad Scientist, Chemical - Chemistry for the morally objectionable- Mind control serums and whatnot.
  • Mad Scientist, Mechanical -Take over the world with your evil robot army, or just extort the public with $600 tractor beams.
  • Street Criminal - For those who wish to rule the world from it's sordid underbelly.
  • Extremist - It's thy way or the highway.... to Hell!
  • Consumer - For those who decide to take a leaf from Hannibal Lector's or Baba Yaga's books, learning to "serve man" can be quite rewarding.
  • Black Magician - Let's raise some hell, shall we?
  • Destroyer - All before your footsteps will find themselves under your footsteps in due time.
  • Trickskter - You do as you please and get away with it through cunning.
  • Unfair one - Foolish mortals can expect short, miserable lives at the hands of the unseelie.
  • Et Cetera.
Student Rankings
In the third trimester of their first year is when students usually receive their rank, though being ranked sooner or later is not unheard of. A student's rank can change at any time if they prove themselves worthy of promotion, or if they are condemned to become an expendable.

  • Unranked - For most of their first year, the average student will be trained and treated as though they are a candidate for being either a villain or a henchman. This is mostly a period of observation, and at the end of this observation period they will be sorted into their ranks.
  • Villain - Student villains are of the more respected ranks, and are expected to pursue an active role in villainy. They may learn combat and other hands-on skills, but their rank is defined by reputation, leadership, and planning.
  • Henchman - Another respected rank, defined by subservience, handiwork, and strength. Henchmen are expected to serve the villains. A student henchman will come to take the role of soldier, lab assistant, acolyte, or any other position that might serve under a villain.
  • Expendable - Expendables are considered to be little more than cannon fodder for the education of the former mentioned ranks, generally subject to vivisection, imprisonment, and general abuse since they're the designated victims in the more hands-on assignments of the other students. Their education may or may not cease, and it isn't unheard of for expendables to die. (Sometimes several times.) While higher ranked students are allowed to sabotage each other, if a teacher assigns them to target anybody, it will likely be an expendable. While expendables are usually chosen due to sub-par performance in classes or a lack of propensity for demerit, they may also be a student who makes a habit of breaking rules, or has broken a particularly important rule.
The Classes
The school boasts a wide variety of classes, such as those taught by

  • Dr. Dee Pennhurst - Intro To Mad Science - Bioengineering and Vivisection - Notorious Neuroscience
  • Crevan Priest - Dastardly Debate - Dark Arts and Crafts - Potions Through The Ages
  • Persephone Skinner - Couture of Evil
  • Tibbles Scratchwick - Catching and Cooking Exotic Meats
  • Sheila Killaever - Combatative Magic - Utilization of Cold Weapons - Strategies in Close Quarters Combat
  • Dr. Hokum Hacks - Magitechnology and Talisman Building - Accessibility in Evil
  • Cygnet Rothbart - Transformative Magic
  • Eisheth/Imani Omari - Sight: How to Open Your Mind
  • Elta Williams - Sharpshooting
  • Filris - Music
  • Aloysius Voltan (Aka Overlord Domineuse) - Intro to dictatorship - History of Villainy - Strategic Villain Networking - Practical Evil 101
  • Nigel Smith (AKA Kraken Commander or Commander Kraken) - Maritime Domination - Destruction of Aquatic Heroes 101.
  • Jokesmith - Classic Villainy 101
  • Sir Simian - Temporal Villainy 101
  • Count Vladimir (Assisted by General Gruesome) - Monsters 101
  • Scary Eddie - Intimidation Tactics 101

Casualties

Tudor Lestrange Institute is relatively self-contained, and the administration likes to keep it that way. It is for this reason that they have an infirmary on the premises that is equipped to handle nearly all manner of illness and injury. Much like the student body, the medical staff are here on varying bases, some there voluntarily, some imprisoned. The variety of doctors, nurses and the like have a variety of motives. As one might guess, the quality of care varies wildly, with outright malpractice usually even going unchecked as long as it's not a staff member on the business end. Even the Villain and Henchman students are not immune, as some medics, though not identifying as evil, do their best to sabotage the school and its cause while unable to leave the premises for whatever reason.
Still, there are medical staff who do indeed work to keep the students and staff healthy, despite the job being even more bleak than it would be in a clinic or hospital.

Non-TLI Lore - Examples of Other Evil High Schools

In case someone wants to make a character that has previously attended or taught at another Evil school, or just wants to reference other Evil high schools.

Grayborn High School
Located in New Orleans, Louisiana and open to students of the area, this prep school is relatively small and lacks amenities, but is popular for being discreet about teaching Evil curriculum.

Victor STEM Preparatory Institute
A school for young Mad Scientists in an undisclosed Alberta, Canada town. There are many specialized fields that students can study in this school, but they are especially known for their Competitive Combat Robotics team.

Wulfric Academy of Henchmanship
Funded by an Evil faction known as "The Order of Tomorrow," this school is designed specifically to indoctrinate and train the next generation of Bureaucrats and Soldiers so that the US government might be overthrown and replaced with the Council of Tomorrow.
Everyone here is a henchman in training, but they have a classification system similar to that of Tudor Lestrange, though with less categories.
Those are:
  • Innovator - Mad Scientists, developing new weapons and such for the Order
  • Reporter - Bureaucratic troublemakers who seek out, recognize, and report infractions against the Order's ideology
  • Enforcer - Soldiers and cops of the Order

Snowdoff Technical Academy of Dark Endeavors
Even among Evil schools, this school is considered to be dodgy. It's run by a con artist who cuts corners at every chance.

Sin City School of Sinister Strivings
The premier generalized Evil School of the Los Vegas area, their mascot is the shrike. They are considered to be the main competitive rival of Tudor Lestrange Institute. It's known for necromancy classes in partnership with famed supervillain The Red Ghost, a casino design workshop, and a four day school week.

Non TLI Lore - Villains, Heroes, and Vigilantes

The Evil Movement of North America

Though people who are not actively involved in formal villainous activity identify as Evil, the Evil movement was started by North American villains who conned, cursed, kidnapped, and killed on a regular basis. They would adopt sinister sounding aliases for their openly nefarious actions. Later, as the Evil movement grew, its supporters would change their daily names to reflect their Evil Alignment.

The Super Corps

Since the magical and nonhuman population revealed itself to the world, existing law enforcement agencies have developed task forces for the purpose of keeping magic-related crime at bay. These task forces have prominently employed nonhumans and magic users for the sake of contending with criminals who use magic or advanced non-magical technology to break the law.
With the rise of villains, the Super Corps was formed as a federal agency of the United States, which employs all manner of scientist, magician, and anybody else who is willing and able to go up against domestic villains and their henchmen.
The most famous Heroes of the Super Corps adopt aliases in a similar fashion as the villains, and are treated as celebrities. Such figures as Captain Zap, Guardenia, or The Starry Knight may come to mind.
Others, mainly those who prefer not to be famous even with the protections of a mask and pseudonym, work behind the scenes to ensure Super Corps operations run as smoothly as possible.
The Super Corps mainly has centers in large cities, but they are known to travel as needed.

Vigilantes

Not all who fight villains are affiliated with law enforcement. Vigilantes are not uncommon, but do not have the government on their side. Depending on how favorably they treat government figures, they may even be treated as villains themselves should they refuse offers to join the Super Corps.
