1st of June, 2013 was where the world ended. No-one knows what happened or how it happened, but somehow, the human race disappeared. Leaving just us two in what was left. For a long time, we both thought we were the only ones left. Heh, it's kind of odd to think about it now, that in the ruins of humanity, a friendship was born.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start from the beginning, because that's where all good stories start off from, right? It was just one day, after everyone had disappeared....

An-Empty-Toronto-by-Michael-Gill.jpg

He didn't know what compelled him, but for reason Peter had made his way out from England to Canada. For some reason he was drawn to Toronto. It was the same has back home. Deserted, empty, void of any life. Just him in a concrete jungle that seems to be screaming at him. He sighed and walked down the road, not fully knowing where he was going. On him was just a rucksack of food and drinks he had took from his local stores. Stubble was forming on his chin as it had grown overnight. He walked up to a car and smashed the window on, luckily it wasn't alarmed. He put his arm through and unlocked the door and opened it.

He sat inside and laid back, sparring across the two front seats and closed his eyes. He hadn't slept last night so this place would do, even for just a nap. He had placed his bag under the passenger seat so he wouldn't lose it. He just laid there, and started to drift off.

The gold coloured creature walked along the dusty tiles of the store. This convenience store had been Vallex's new hide out for the past couple of weeks, it was one of those stores with an apartment above it, and that's where Vallex had been living, only the only way to get upstairs was through a room behind the chash register, which was unusual, but it it didn't mean anything to Vallex either way. The only thing that mattered to Vallex at the moment was getting rid of that lion rummaging through the store. She didn't understand what it was doing in there, all the live prey it could ever want was out there, in the streets. So, she waited, outside the store, peering from the window with her body hidden by the brick wall of the building.

I Just need some sort of distraction...I'm not risking it like I did last time. She thought this as she touched the scars along her back with her right hand. It wasn't the only place she had scars, this girl was accident prone, but the claw marks scaling her back was one of the most terrifying of experiences. It was a miracle she had even survived the attack, let alone survive while the wound healed. She shook her head, refusing to think any more of it, she needed to get rid of this lion, get her supplies, and find a new location.

Like a prayer had been answered, a loud sound, around the corner store she stood outside of, echoed through the streets, bouncing off the tall buildings and breaking the silence she had grown so used too. It sounded like glass breaking somewhere. Wait....What made that sound?OH SHI-

She had almost no time to think, she turned the corner and jumped behind the first car she saw, hoping the lion would ignore her scent and investigate where the sound had come from. She held her body tight to the car, making sure her legs were hidden by the wheel, though she didn't believe this was enough to conceal her. She made no sounds, and waited until the animal passed. Looked like luck was on her side. She glanced through the windows of the car to watch the lion, it was circling back and forth around a car, broken glass beneath the drivers door.

Peter was sound a sleep till he heard a thump against the car door. He opened his eyes and slightly rose his head. Peering through the open slot in the door where the window was once, he saw the long trim of brown hair from something he could only guess wasn't human. He grabbed his bag from underneath the chair and pulled out a two liter bottle of cola. He was saving it for when he wanted a break from water, but I guess he could use it to save him. He started to shake it and continued to till it was nothing but cola foam in the bottle. He sighed and placed a hand on the opposite door that was above his head and click went the lock.

It caught the attention of the beast outside who circled round the car to the side of the door. He sighed once more then pushed the door open. The beast lunged but was welcomed by the exploding cola bottle that had been thrown into it's face.

The beast bent backwards to the surprise as Peter ran behind a corner. The sudden shock from the bottle confused the lion and with nothing but cola in it's nose, it couldn't get Peter's scent. Defeated physically and emotionally, the lion sulked off. Leaving Peter panting for breath against the brick wall of the corner. "A f***ing lion? Seriously?" He said to himself, sliding against the wall till he sat down on the floor. He rubbed his face with his right hand and just rested it against the wall, looking up to the sky with closed eyes. He was going to rest before moving on seeming he just took on a lion.

Vallex watched the lion patrolling around the car for another moment, then took the opportunity to run inside the convenience store to grab her things. She hopped over the counter and opened the door, revealing steep wooden steps which lead to the apartment upstairs where she stored her supplies. She ran upstairs, a cloud of dust arising on each step, and turned the corner of the hallway to what she had assumed upon first finding the place was the living room. There, a bag she used to carry her things with and dual swords she had stolen from a museum lay on a chewed up couch, small med kits and packages of food lay scattered on the floor around it, among other things. She looked at it for a brief moment then scooped it all up in her back-pack, throwing the sheaths where the twin blades slept over her one shoulder.

After making sure she had everything, or most of what she felt was important to take, she glanced out the half boarded up window down to the car the lion had been investigating, and saw it wasn't there anymore, she caught a short glimpse of the animal turning a corner down another street, and assumed it had lost interest.

She began downstairs, saying goodbye to her home for the last couple of weeks, and thought about where she would stay now. Lately, the animals had been acting strangely, more aggressive and just seemed to be everywhere she went. When she walked out of the store, she leaned against the brick wall, looking at the sky.Its getting late. Gotta find somewhere to stay that the meat eaters aren't around.

She looked down the street, then in the other direction. She froze. She didn't make a sound, and did not think he had noticed her yet, either. Sitting on the sidewalk beside her was a man. Another person.A human.A....A.... She couldn't believe it. She hadn't seen another person in so long...And now this person....

She forced the lump in her throat down, just looking down at him as she stood there beside him. She didn't know what to do. She wanted to run. She wanted to hug him.She wanted to hide. And she wanted jump with joy and question him how even existed. She wanted to break down and cry. But she just stood there, her face expressionless.

Looking at the pavement. It was started to soak with water as rain began to fall. He noticed something to his right. A conversed foot. Without a second thought he grabbed the leg, using it to launch himself up and pinned the person to the wall. In mid-pin he drew out a bone-knife and held it against this person's neck. "Who are you under?" He commanded an answer. His eyes locked within this mysterious woman's eyes as rain water was running down both their cheeks. No way he was going to fall for the old survivor routine. "Tell me!" His voice echoed with anger. The city seemed more empty than usual at this moment.

Vallex was stunned, she thought about a lot of scenarios happening within those few short seconds, but this surprisingly was not one of them. The man pushed her body against the wall hard, pinning her flat against the brick of the store, his eyes boring holes into hers, almost searching for something....

She looked back, erasing the shock on her face with a stern one, staring into his warm blue eyes with her chocolate, almost black ones. She kept quiet, analyzing his movement, the bone knife was held steadily to her neck, she could feel the sharpness of it on her bare flesh. She had to deal with this calmly, despite this situation. I Don't know what you mean. "Who am I under?" How could I work for someone when everyone is gone? You'r the... She closed her eyes, for some reason, she felt calm. The rain began to pick up, no longer a drizzle, soaking the both of them, her long forest green hair turning to stringy soft strands from the rain. She opened them again. She thought about telling him her name, maybe he would be more asured she was not a threat? My name is....Vallex. I'd appreciate it if you took that thing away from me. Vallex had many hidden blades on her in case of surprise attacks, but from animals, never another human...In moments she could have sprung one out, but she did not want to get on his bad side right off the bat, she wanted to learn about this person, she wanted to keep this person around. After all, he was the first she had seen in a decade.

As he peered into this woman's eyes, something told him he could trust her. As the thought mingled in his mind his grip on her eased up till he was standing away from her and looking up to the rain. "F***. Sorry about that, just. He paused for a moment. "Just can't be sure." He finished. He packed his knife back into his bag and looked back at the woman. "So, Vallex. I'm guessing you're the reason I had a lion to deal with." He locked his eyes with hers. Normally he'd shy away from from even glancing over someone's eyes but at this moment he was tired, wet, cold, he had fought a lion and right now he had this still-potential-killer. His mind still had his doubts about this woman, either it was the colour of her hair or something about her. "If so, you owe me a new bottle." He looked down the road that they were on and started to form a plan in his head. He slowly looked back at Vallex and nervously smiled. "I'll come pick it up when we meet again." And with that, he started to walk down the road with a small adjustment to his rucksack to make it more comfortable for him. "Is leaving her such a good idea?" He asked himself in thought. "What if she had food on her or something to drink? You did just had a knife to her throat." He sighed but continued to walk. "No way I'm bringing her along. I've been fine by myself, anyway she'll more then likely weigh me down. Especially if they show up again. And I don't think they're too happy about me taking those things." He formed a smile as he chuckled to himself at the memory of him stealing that coke bottle from a group of bandits. In fact, Vallex was probably the only other sane human he's met.

One corner of her lips pulled up, giving him a sideways smile, and left her looking somewhat curious. Yeah, sorry about that. Had to get that lion out of the way so I could get my things. She gripped the strap of her back pack with one hands she said this. Suddenly, this person began to walk away, promising to meet again. She couldn't let him leave! Not after all this time of being alone! Not after she finally... Hey wait! She called after him, running till she reached his side and grabbing hold of the sleeve of his jacket. S-stay...A little...It's been way to long since I last saw a human being...I have food and water, we just need to find somewhere safe and dry to make a fire...

Peter stopped, kind of confused and shocked that she had stopped him on his way. The slight stutter on the word stay kind of hit him deep inside. He sighed, slightly bowing his head to the floor. "Alright, I'll stay. At least till when you get sick of me." He said in defeat. Mostly feeling the same way as she did. He looked to her, his hair dripping water into his eyes. "I presume you have a place to stay that isn't wet?" Blinking almost double than he does as water enters his eyes. He started walking back to the convenience store as it was the only place with an accessible area and it looked like it could keep the rain off them. As he entered the store he broke some pieces of the old styled wooden shelves and piled the pieces into a pile and started attempting to do a fire. A full hour went past and still nothing but smoke. Sighing once more, Peter tried again, not giving up for anything. Finally, with a burst of life like a creature roaring from its slumber, a flame erupted from the pile of wood and illuminated the store around them and also emitted a nice warmth which conquered the cold and wetness of his clothes. He crossed his legs infront of the fire and sigh with relief. It had been ages he actually felt safe so he welcomed this with open arms. But one question was still prowling his mind. "who is this valley character?" he was afraid to openly ask her in fear of either frightening her away and never finding out or sparking something that could hold his life in the balance. What he thought would do would see if he could coax the information out of her with conversation. Besides, it'll be good to have a good talk with someone without killing them.

Vallex looked down, smiling, relieved Peter had decided to stay with her. I don't think i'll get sick of you any time soon. She said, following him inside the convenience store up to its apartment sector, where he broke down some shelves and, after some time, created a bursting fire, the flames chasing away the cold air and dampness. While he had been working on the fire, Vallex had gone into the bedrooms, taking all the blankets and pillows and dragged them to the living room area where the fire was made. Here, I found these. Dry off and get warm. She tossed him two thick blankets and a pillow, dropping her own on the ground by the fire. She had used these same blankets earlier, when she used this exact apartment for shelter for weeks. I should tell you now, but I think it's only smart to stay here for the night, i'v recently been spotting predators around here, and that lion...Well, he's the reason why I left this place. Just then the sky lit up, a flash of lightning had cut across the sky, branching off into jagged beams of light. A booming terrifying sound filling every room. Vallex had always thought lightning looked like it was tearing through space, cutting through existence itself.

The thunder didn't bother her, rather, storms made her feel more relaxed, despite the weathers more chaotic nature since the disappearance of humanity. Still standing, she removed her leather jacket and sweater, which were both soaked, and hung them on the coat hangers to dry, she wished she had an extra pair of clothes packed with her, for there was nothing she could do about the rest of her clothes but sit by the fire. She looked to Peter as she sat down by the flames, wrapping her self in a blanket. You might want to do the same, don't want to catch a cold. She said with a smile. She wondered if the way she spoke wasn't as friendly as she thought, and perhaps to direct and cold. Putting the thought aside, she noticed Peter had been quiet for some time, he seemed to be thinking about something, staring into the heart of the flames. She wondered what, but was afraid to ask, so instead she said Sorry I don't have any food in my pack, and the store downstairs has been completely cleaned out of anything edible as well....
