That's always the trick! I take it you are new to roleplay. That is one of the first things to learn.
I'd suggest starting simple. We know that Phanto is a bit of a coward, and very devoted to his brother.
So based off that bit. Answer these questions simply.
1. Why is Toryk scary to Phanto? Is it because he is aggressive? Or because he is a gnoll? Or maybe both or neither?
2. Why would Phanto not want to do anything? Scared of himself perhaps? Or lack of confidence?
3. What would he do if Toryk acted like he is? Maybe he's is afraid of getting hit so is the type to flinch?
This is what we call "getting in character" or "getting into our characters head"
We start with little bits about our character, and build on what they would do.
For example.
I know toryk is but of a brute. If someone were to talk smack to him, he'd talk it right back, or punch them in the pace.
I know Toryk puts close tie on those he considers of his pack. Without his own gnoll pack, I know he would develop ties much more easily to whichever group he ends up with.
Knowing those two things, I can say that he would see kalvin as a packmates, and he has no problem with a bit of bark and bite to the guy when Kalvin gets sassy, but at the same time would not try to really hurt him and would try to protect him.
