"I'm sorry you're in pain. We can't give you any sedatives when your blood pressure's so low, or painkillers without your medical records," the doctor continued, "And you cannot get up. Not until we're certain that we've removed all the glass, and stitched you up. And even then it's ill-advised; if you break your stitches you could die from internal bleeding." And by 'could', he meant 'would', "But we'll call in Amy as soon as you're able to see her."
Time passed, boring and painful during which he was told not to move or talk, and then they found another tiny shard of glass right next to his liver where if he HAD stood up he would have bled out in less than a minute and then they changed doctors... A lot of damage had been caused inside Shadow's body, including to several vital organs. Shadow had survived a fall from space but having a piece of bottle pushed into his gut was... well, not exactly the same thing.
But eventually...
Eventually Amy was by his side again, and she took his hand.
"Shadow..." she sniffled, and then started crying, "I was so scared you might die..."
