So the emporer pretty much controls the entire world? are rebels a thing that could be played as, fighting for freedom and stuff, how diverse is culture? or is that also tightly controlled

The emperor technically rules it all, but the real power goes to the Shogun, the military leader. There are multiple rebellions going on right now. Each major family, and even some minor, houses are fighting to have their daimyo made Shogun. You will be a part of the Hanran (If I remembered to spell that correctly). Which translates into 'rebel' in Japanese. Culture is pretty well regulated throughout the empire.

So could I play a member of a conquered tribe or something?

You can be a member of a different clan, but you'd have to have left them in some way so you could join the Hanran. Whether you were exiled or left of your own accord is up to you. As it is the Hanran are to small to have conquered anything. And remember the archetypes, they are in the overview.
