A Heartfelt Search

Castiel was, to say, disappointed when the hunter pulled away. He looked sideways again at Dean.

"Don't talk about my brother like that." Sam retorted, disgusted.

Dean rolled his eyes at Cas' characteristic sideways glance, before moving a bit closer to the angel, putting an arm around him.

The two sat in silence for a while, just looking at the dark scenery in front of them. Night had began to fall, and the sky became an inky twilight color. Stars were white pinpricks dotting along, shining like it was their only thing left in the world to do.

It was beautiful, to say the least, and Dean was grateful.

Golden eyes flickered with annoyance, and Gabriel scowled, "I'm pretty sure you've said some things about Cas before, Sam."

Castiel rested his head against the hunter's shoulder, and smiled, staring up at the stars as well. He'd always thought them beautiful, and though he knew what they were, they were graceful things nonetheless. He'd always liked to stare up at them, even in the milky hours of twilight, when they themselves were fading into the murky skies of dawn.

"Not like you." Sam's nose wrinkled in disgust. "God, you're a pedophile, you know that?" He snapped, scorn filling his hazel gaze.

"Never really looked up at the sky before...unless there's fireworks, you know? Too easy to get hit by something when you're just lookin' up." Dean said, voice being clear and deep in the night air.

"Where the hell did that come from?" Gabriel quipped, anger building up inside, making his eyes become dark and intimidating. It seemed like the archangel was starting to lose his cool...after all, Sam did just call him a pedophile.

"You're too cautious, Dean. Too careful. Even more so than I, but you don't show it." Castiel murmured, and gently smiled, a soft sigh.

Sam's brows raised and his hazel eyes widened. "Ooh, Mister Perfect swore. Better shut up, shall we?" He mocked, keeping his cool.

A corner of his mouth upturned in a smile, green eyes twinkling like the stars above, "Kinda have to be, Cas. Not being cautious has got me into trouble. Guess it's a habit."

That was the last straw, and soon enough Sam was pressed against the headboard of the bed, a hand around his neck. Gabriel had aggressive tendencies when angry, often resulting in some form of violence.

"Now you better listen to me, Sam. Don't you ever, ever mock me like that again. I know you're better than that. So just shut your trap, and it'll be easier for the both of us." And with that, Gabriel let his hand go from the taller's neck, eyes hard and unmoving.

"Not when you've got an angel to protect you." Castiel murmured softly, not used to narcissistic comments such as so, but he figured it was rather appropriate.

Sam stayed in the position he was forced into, hazel eyes dilated with real fear. He swore Gabriel's hand was still at his neck, though he could see that the archangel had taken a step away from him and his hands were clenched in fists.

He felt as if he could feel bruises at his throat, but Gabriel hadn't held him that hard.

Hadn't he?

Huffing a curt laugh, Dean smiled and shook his head fondly, "I guess so. And I'm pretty lucky," the hunter commented as he moved a hand to rest on Cas' cheek, turning his head so they faced each other. Leaning forward and pressing his lips against the angel's own, Dean continued like it was the only thing he could do right in this world.

Seeing those hazel eyes dilated with fear, Gabriel almost felt bad for what he had done. There weren't any bruises around the taller's neck, but red marks were noticeable. But he wasn't going to apologize for a while, it just wasn't in his boiling blood at the moment. Hands still clenched into fists, the archangel watched impassively as Sam remained still.

Castiel smiled into Dean's kiss and pressed his lips gently against the hunter's. He closed his bright blue eyes, and leaned slightly into Den though they were already close.

Sam looked at Gabriel for a moment, letting both the action and words sink in. He then glanced away and then stood up as if nothing had happened, turning his back to the archangel, which probably wasn't the best idea.

Eyes fluttering closed, Dean kept his hand on Cas' face, stroking his thumb against the rough stubble along his partner's face. But soon the hunter had to pull away, needing to breathe. Although his lungs burning because of his actions was mildly worth it all.

"Sorry, Cas. Need some air," Dean murmured, a faint smile gracing his face.

Glaring at Sam's back, the archangel soon placed himself in front of the taller, remaining silent. Admittedly, Gabriel was afraid of saying something further. The tension in the air was heavy and almost suffocating.

Castiel breathed slightly abnormally, a smile gently playing in his lips. He laughed gently at Dean's comment and pressed his lips against the hunter's jaw, fingertips grazing his neck lightly.

Sam stepped back, fear lacing his hazel eyes. He raised his hands in case he needed to block a blow or defend himself.

Titling his head and melting into Cas' touch, Dean let his breath fall slow and relaxed. "If I had known you were gonna do this, Cas. I would've done somethin' a long time ago," Dean whispered, breath turning into fog before disappearing into the night air.

"I'm not gonna hit you, Sam." Gabriel said plainly. It seemed like he had managed to make the person he liked; fear him more and more.

Castiel pulled back to blink at the hunter. "You..." He trailed off, and his voice went softer as he spoke again.

"Really?"

"Then what are you going to do?" Sam asked, voice wavering. He stepped back again despite Gabriel's claim.

Dean blushed a bit and gave a shrug of one shoulder, "Yeah...I mean, I don't believe in that 'love at first sight' crap. It took me a while...but it was faster than I'm used to," the hunter admitted.

"What I do best: nothing," Gabriel answered, voice empty and devoid of its usual snark and passion.

Castiel smiled gently and blushed, glancing down. He hadn't exactly expected that of the hunter, not something even relative.

Sam glanced at him and then stepped away, sitting down slowly, keeping his gaze on the archangel.

Laughing nervously, "Don't expect me to say that kinda stuff too much, Cas. Too Hallmark." Dean remarked, admiring the blush across the angel's face. He wanted to see more of it.

Giving a gesture of surrender, Gabriel raised his brows and looked exhausted. It seemed like the encounter had did a number on the archangel. This was the side of him that many did not see: vulnerable, tired, and often defeated.

Castiel laughed, and felt his blush grow more. "I didn't in the first place." He murmured.

Sam rubbed at his neck, and looked at Gabriel curiously.

Barking out a single laugh, Dean nodded and pulled his partner's face closer to his own, lining kisses following the edge of Cas' jaw. His heart felt like it was going to ache, but one of the best aches he's ever experienced in his life. It wasn't from sprinting to get away from a werewolf or from holding your fingers tightly around the handle of a gun. It was from being in love...

"You gonna say anything, kiddo?" Gabriel wondered, trying his best to return his usual pep and confidence. He didn't like being without it. Made him free like he was helpless and incapable.

Castiel blushed at the laugh and then more at the feather kisses on his jawline. He closed his eyes and tilted his head slightly, feeling the ache as well.

Sam shrugged, though he had more than one thing to say. He didn't want to anger Gabriel more, though. He didn't want to be killed.

A cold breeze made its way to the pair, and Dean shivered, despite the jacket around his frame. Soon it would start to snow, and finding Sam could be harder, after all, driving when it's icy is not the best idea. And Dean wouldn't be able to find his brother if he was dead.

The thought of his brother almost forgotten to him in the last few hours made Dean frown. He had been so busy with Cas and everything, that he never bothered to think about Sam. He had to find him. And yet he just spent the few precious hours that could have been used to locate the younger; kissing an angel.

Gabriel sighed, and ran a hand through his honey-colored hair, "Seriously, Sam. Just say it. The Hulk's not angry so much anymore..."

Castiel looked sideways at the hunter and was going to ask as to what he was thinking of, when Bobby came through the door, holding his book, looking hopeful for once in a long time. "I found it!" He breathed, glancing at them. He wondered what they'd been doing but that wasn't nearly important at the given moment.

Sam sighed, stretching out and looking at Gabriel. He thought about what he was to say for a moment, and instead of swearing and yelling as his brother might have, the taller ended up with a soft tone. "What's up with you?"

It wasn't a mocking question, one of sincerity, and one that portrayed that Sam did want to know.

Looking up at the elder, Dean raised a brow, "Whatcha find, Einstein?"

The archangel gave a half-hearted shrug, expression turning tired and withdrawn, not really knowing what to say, "Don't really know, kiddo. Never really...acted like that so quickly. I mean, there was that time in our little TV land that I kinda did put your brother in a choke hold. But...didn't think I'd ever do that to you."

"How to summon an archangel." Bobby said, and gestured for them to come inside. "Damn. It's cold. Get in here."

Without another word the older hunter was gone and headed into the house.

Castiel smiled softly at Bobby's excitement, then stood, extending a hand to help Dean.

"Well, why not me? Not like I'm special or anything." Sam said this knowing that the last comment might prick a nerve inside the archangel. But he was curious, despite knowing that curiosity killed the cat.

In this case: Curiosity killed the moose.

Taking his lover's hand, as one should, Dean stood up and wrapped an arm around Cas, leading him back inside the house. Leaves whirled in front of the porch, as if saying their goodbyes.

"Unlike your brother, sometimes you bother to keep calm and everything. You're more special than ya know, Sam." Gabriel answered, annoyance edging in his voice and the faintest of color washing itself on his face.

Castiel smiled at Dean and went inside, following Bobby with Dean at his side.

"Obviously you think so." Sam replied, tilting his head and looking at Gabriel with a curious hazel gaze.
