Hey all,

So as some of you have already noticed, the site has gone from 4.0 to 5.0. I would like to personally thank all the @Development Advisers who participated from the start of this to the finish and gave feedback along the way.

We are already starting to see reports of how much faster it is to load the site for plenty of users, which brings me to our next point.

3/3.5/4 mostly focused on code fixes and some minor improvements (4 over 3, with a more professional, slick feel). 5, while it fixes the rest of the code issues (by cleaning up several insanely massive CSS Files into nothing more than one document with several lines), focuses more on the visual side of things by removing all gradients (worthless CSS as mentioned before), unneeded images built into the style for depth, or other nonsense. For all intents and purposes this is truly a flat design, the flattest RpN has ever been.

Thus, loading times for mobile alone are 2-3 times faster, just like on desktop.

Apart from loading times the design utilizes the space better. One obvious example is this:

vs

2015-11-24_06-02-23.png

Of course the giant logo did not help but even after that, so much space existed before you could even reach the first section of the site.

Aside from the above example, the idea of utilizing space better has been used all across the site, even the actual forum list itself is more compact and less overwhelming to read.

There have also been several bug fixes including, but not limited to (seriously, there's a lot more):

  • Fixed the issue with avatars that have a transparent background
  • Sidebar cleaned up (it was causing a good chunk of the load time for the home page of the site)
  • Several mobile fixes
  • Avatars are regular sized again (this is only considered a bug because it broke several other things, and in the future, we will have the option to make them big again)
  • Much more

If you notice something that is missing/broken or just have feedback in general, please post below :) !

Note: The current logo is still a work in progress.

For anyone wondering:

Switched the official site blue from #449ad4 to shades of said color which are: #1b3d54 & #285c7f

I really really like it, and yes, it's faster to load. Thanks you so much for your hard work guys. More power to everyone (<3)

I'm sort of in between on my feelings with this. I like that it loads faster on mobile and I really like that it has a clean look. But for me, it's just a bit too dark in color, it has sort of a sad feeling but I'm sure I'll get used to it in time.

Thanks for your hard work on the site~!

I was working on a post on mobile, and I fell asleep so I decided to continue it this morning. When I woke up and turned on my browser, it kind of reloaded for some reason. I was like... YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

But I really admire the update, you guys did a fantastic job.

WAY faster load. I've only been on here a few days, but even I noticed it. Plus the icons on the text boxes for posting are way cleaner. V nice. A+ work c:

First of all, big thanks to the Staff and everyone else involved in this, for the continued effort to maintain and improve the heart, soul, and other periphery of RPN *woof* That said I do have a few remarks:

1) Font

We do have a new font, right? I mean, it looks nearly the same but everything is also much wider apart. Is the new default maybe one size larger? I'm not sure if this is a good thing, though. I liked it better before. It looks less tight now, in a bad way :/

2) Links

Link color in posts, such as this here little link is too similar to the rest of the text. It does not stand out enough. Can you please make it more brighter? Maybe use the old link color - the light blue? :)

3) Logo

The old logo was far superior to the new one. Being familiar with graphic design I can imagine how much work went into the crest, and it is a shame that it's now so small. The old font also made a lot more impact but I know that with this smaller size you can't make the serif version look good. I understand the logo is still being worked on, though, so hopefully you'll find a good balance in between ;)

And I believe that's all I can snoop out for now. The rest is like you said, faster and cleaner and overall looking more serious-like. Right now I still prefer the old RPN but I suppose I'll get used to this after a while. Maybe I'll feel better if the points above are redone *woof*

No problem, I'm sorry the colors feel sad, I might tweak them in the future but for now I'm going to leave them like this.

[QUOTE="No More Pretending]The update looks great guys! My thanks to the developers and such for their hard work!

I feel like the old style was more inviting, more homely and this is more corporate and almost a bit cold.

But it does load faster so if that was really the concern then that has been met.

I wouldn't say I like it, because I don't, but it's quite alright, I suppose.

But like I've made clear in the chat, and I'll post it here as "proper" critique.

My most major complaint is the very utilitarian feel of the forum itself, it went from fancy to basic far too quickly and far too suddenly. The absolutely beautiful layout replaced with stripes of colour with text in them. Beyond that, there's also the very comprimed feel of the threads, much like this one, where it feels as if the text and the user are both compressed into as small a space as possible and it gives a very, as Dago put it, claustrophobic feel.

There's also the small avatars, but they'll be back in time. But yeah, it's mostly the utilitarian feel and the boxed-up nature of the new format.

I'll be honest. It's not like I do not like this new theme, but I do like the previous one better. Both have its perks and while I agree that this loads faster, I liked the style of the previous one better

Is it possible to request having the old one possible to be chosen for people who prefer it?

But still, good job trying your best to make this forum better, staff :) Thumbs up still on this.

No sorry we don't run multiple styles at any given time because of how difficult it would become to maintain them.

Looking into this.

Glad to hear big avatars will be back - LOVED that feature.

Overall I really like the changes, much more utilitarian (in a good way) and easy to see stuff. Not that the old one was bad, but navigation, at-a-glance stuff, etc is easier now in my opinion, and it looks pretty sharp so I don't feel like the aesthetics have gone down.

I like this new style. It's tight, cool, and it doesn't look so different that I am no longer able to recognize the site or would have any problems finding anything on here. I did like the old, larger logo though, but that might just be me. I imagine it being smaller now makes the site load faster. Like Wolf said, as someone familiar with Graphic Design it's not hard to imagine how much work it must have cost to make it.

Yet I do also agree with the people who dislike this style. The old one was, indeed, more inviting.

So I guess I'm a bit on the middle ground here. I like this one, but prefer the old one. Or maybe it's just (autistic) me needing to get used to changes again.

Very pleased to hear so many people happy with the update, and for those of you that are less fond of the look, I do hope you'll be able to warm up to it in time. :)

I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to agree with some of the others here and say that personally I really don't like the new layout. It seems depressing, cramped, complicated, and uninviting as well. This may sound odd, but I'd say that the main reason I actually joined this site was due to the old layout. That isn't to say that the other roleplay sites are better than this one (now having experience, I think this is the best by far), but when you're searching in a sea of roleplaying forums, you want to look for the one that stands out the most. Many other rp sites were just like this one; they were very cramped, desaturated and seemed much more complicated than they actually were due to the tight layout. The RpN 4.0 layout was simple, easy to understand for newcomers and just gave off an overall friendly and happy feel to it.

of course thats just my opinion so ye

Gotta say actually, whilst it looks amazing on mobile, it looks a lot less inviting, a lot more bare bones on desktop imho. Hmm...

I find that what turns me off most on a website is sitting looking at that little loading icon in the browser tab, not the actual appearance of what loads. RpN's style has been bloated for a long time with superfluous script and bandwidth-eating graphics that have left me with a less than awesome experience trying to get onto the site. With a streamlined style, loading times are the fastest they've ever been, especially for those with slower machines and poorer internet connections. I don't come to RpN because it has great graphics, I come here because I like to RP and I'd like to do that without waiting a week for my threads to load.

Surely a balance can be struck between aesthetics and utility, good Captain *woof*

As many have pointed out, this looks great on mobile but that's exactly it - the desktop feels too much like I'm viewing a mobile version of the site, and if I wanted to do that I would use my phone instead. But I'll be glad if we can have brighter links and the old font back (or at least some font that won't stretch the text so much... What I type takes too much space for the amount of words, in contrast to before)
