    Lorsh Lorsh not trying to be an sjw, the word genuinely rubs me the wrong way. personally, i've never had anyone call me "oriental" without it having an unwanted sexual or otherwise romantic connotation due to my "exotic" ethnicity (i live in an area where asians are scarce af). besides, the word "asian american" exists and doesn't carry any of the negativity of the past

    I think colloquially it's somewhat on par with the term "Indian" in reference to people who are Native American. The ideal would be to use the specific region (Ojibwa, Sioux, Mi'kmaq and Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese). If one doesn't know those specifics, the standard for politeness - at least in the USA - is to use the specific general term (Native American and Asian).

    Though even with that general standard, some people still prefer to be called "Indian" or "Oriental", and that's valid for them. Though I think you're absolutely right allure that "oriental" is often used as a much more sexualized term. (I think it's a problem because both Native American and Asian American people, women in particular, have to endure being sexualized and discriminated against simultaneously)
