If you wanna make a Modern Guy/Gal in Thedas (basically someone from earth finding themselves in this world) it'll work out pretty well when you wander in all clueless xD
Well...holy cow there's a lot of lore in DA. Visual story telling goes a long way and you'll learn lots by watching an early playthrough of DA:I if you want. But going in to the Inquisition start of things basically what you need to know is: Mages and Templars are at war with each other and a "conclave" has been called to find a middle ground between the two groups with the Chantry in the middle. They're sort of the catholic church of this world called Thedas. This world fears the power of mages and their vulnerability to possession by spirits from the magical plane known as the fade. The templars are basically supposed to police the mages in places called "The circle" spread around the continent. But templars became corrupt and abused the mages for generation. Eventually it exploded into a full on rebellion.
The aforementioned conclave had man important people gather including the Divine (like the pope but a woman). A HUGE magical explosion erupts at the Conclave tear reality apart. Only one survivor of the conclave emerges from a rift between The Fade and the physical world. Their memory partially missing, and a green mark on their hand that is slowly killing them. A yet it expands at the same time the largest tear in reality. Perhaps this mark could close the rifts that have formed after the massive magical explosion?
