kai was born in germany to an american mother and a german father, their relationship being one of the few seriously long-distance romances that lasted. aside from undergoing intensive medical care at a very young age, he managed to have a fairly happy if not spoiled upbringing and grew used to lots of travel. his father passed away from the same illness kai had when the boy was only twelve, a stark reminder of his own mortality and a loss that he considered the end of his childhood. kai moved permanently to america after that, living with his mother full-time except for the occasional visiting of family. he turned to music and artwork in his early teen years as a way of dealing with his issues, and was likely going to become either a professional singer or comic artist when he was a bit older had his illness not returned with a vengeance the year of his fourteenth birthday.

Biography: Growing up Grayson's Father was constantly in and out of jail. His Mother did what she had to do to keep a roof over their heads while managing a drug problem of her own. Throughout his life Grayson watched his Mom destroy herself with heroin and cocaine. When Grayson was fourteen he started smoking marijuana with some of the other teens that lived in the same section 8 housing complex as him. Since then he has always been a partier. When he entered High School things only got worse once he started getting invited to parties. His Mother started getting arrested for possession of drugs and prostitution so Grayson had to start working after school most nights to keep their little apartment.

Grayson dropped out of High school his senior year in order to work while his Mom was in jail, when she was released he went back to school the following year, making him a year behind. It wasn't until his senior year he found his core group of friends, rather they found him. He views them as a blessing because they kind of put him on a better path. That doesn't mean he still doesn't absolute gets wrecked on the weekends and sometimes week nights..he just maybe is more concerned about his future.

Personality: Grayson is very charismatic and outgoing. He can talk his way out of almost any situation or into any situation if he wanted. He's kind of all over the place when he talks and gets distracted very easily, then again it may be like occasional coke use. However, if he cares about you he cares about you with every fiber of his soul and will do anything for the people he loves. Grayson always has to have something to do or he will go crazy. He is also very fickle and can't commit to one thing for very long before getting bored. Every girl he's dated has only lasted a few weeks maybe a month and then he usually ends things. He can be a dick at times, but is generally a good person. When he is alone he has a lot of emotions and doesn't know how to process them so he usually does drugs or drinks heavily or a combination in order to quiet his mind.

personality: Irene is tender, caring, and considerate young lady. She always wants to set a good example by acting as mature and responsible during all times, though when being with her friends she always seems to start to break character no matter how hard she tries. Irene is most known for her calm and motherly behavior around everyone whether they are actually younger than her or not. Irene is and will be your rock, she is the person you can talk to about anything and ask for advice, she will be your shoulder to cry on, the person who will hug and smuggle you with comfort without question… all you have to do is ask. She may not have all the right answers and you might not agree with every answer she gives you but knowing that you came to her about it is enough for her to know that she’s her part.

In most situations Irene does well at hiding her emotions and pretending to act calm with spot-on fake smile, but in plenty others her mother-like tendencies can get extremely out of hand real quick. Her protectiveness will start to grow for the worst and she will actually start to treat everyone as if they were young children and not the young semi-adults they are. Irene is seems to be completely oblivious to her aggressive “mother-henning” when it becomes likes this and isn't able to see that it’s has started, if not already to be more of a nuisance rather than helpful. It's best that someone give a tap on the shoulder and chill the heck out before she ends up causing more trouble to the problem, because if nobody points it out to her she sure as hell won't catch herself.

As mentioned before Irene is quite well at masking her emotions, and it's clear that she cares about others more than herself. She’s so busy trying to be everybody else’s shoulder, everyone's rock, but she remembers that she's human too and wouldn't mind some comfort and advice now and then as well. Although she would most likely never say that out front, rather putting on that fake smile and saying that everything's alright as she carefully tends to everyone else.

biography: Her parents didn’t get married to save time and money. Besides that they were what was considered a normal and happy family. A mother, a father, and an adorable daughter in elementary school. Her parents were two office workers working at the same office and if it weren’t for their love of each other, and the fact that they had an eleven year old little girl to love back home they would be completely married to work. Her mother slowly started to work overtime more though but her father never brought it up and soon it became normal- so normal that it felt as if she only had one loving parent raising her nowadays. Over the next few months rumors began spread around the workplace, rumors that Irene’s mother was having a love affair with some man if the office. Her mother couldn’t take the sneers from work any longer and finally came clean to her partner that she was pregnant with twins, and that they weren’t his. Her father didn’t take the news well and late during the night he began packing his stuff to leave. A young Irene, waking up with a sudden thirst for some water started to wandering towards the kitchen, only to find her father unlocking the doorknob locks with luggage bags beside him. Confused and incredibly thirsty Irene tugged at her father’s pants leg and ask for a drink. She remembers the look on his face like the back of her hand; the fake smile he forced himself to put on and the sheer sadness and disappointment in his eyes. Disappointment in or of what? She wasn't too sure.

She remembers him giving her a drink before walking her back to her room and tucking her back into bed, and when she closed her eyes and woke up the next morning he was gone. That day her mother realized that he had moved who knows where, cut all contact with her and that he quit his job. Her mother changed after that, becoming quiet and distant. Months later when her younger twin siblings were born Irene’s mother didn’t bother to acknowledge her newborns or name them so it was up to Irene to do it for her. She named them after two of her favorite species of birds, Dove for the girl and the boy Wren. Even after bringing the twins home and having now three children to care for her mother’s depressed attitude didn’t change. Irene already knew that her little sister and brother wouldn’t experience the love and care from two parents like she did for most of her life prior, but the thought of not getting that care from their one parent left either? It just felt wrong and unfair. So, since then Irene decided to take up the role herself by throwing her childhood away and practically becoming a mother at eleven. She became so worried about the twins back home that when she entered middle school she began skipping days of school just to check on them, not that her mother seemed to care enough to say anything about it most days. It seemed her school cared enough for the both of them, her missed days and low performance in school caused her to repeat a grade. But it was worth it for the twins and she’d do it again in a heartbeat. It’s been eight years since then and during that time Irene found more "children" to love and fuss over now, the group of friends she has made and holds dearly to her heart.

Madeline was born second in the Zabielski clan, her older sister being five years older than her. Their parents never married, since they viewed marriage as a way for the government to control and keep track of them. They were the true definition of hippies-- they lived life to the fullest, and didn't live by any specific definition or standards of society. Hell, as kids, Maddie and her family didn't even have running water and they spent alot of time couch surfing with other hippie friends.

Thankfully, by the time Maddie was to start school, her parents had figured out that she and her sister Janessa needed a little bit more stability in their lives. So, they bought a run down trailer from a greasy haired seller, and that's where they've been ever since. All her life, Maddie has been known as Nessa's little sister, or Henry and Tessa's daughter. Constantly thrown into someone's shadow, she never really had the opportunity to get to know herself.

Not that she didn't try. She tried all sorts of extracurricular activities, trying to make friends and figure out what she enjoyed. They all fell flat when her parents refused to pay (or just flat out couldn't afford to pay) for things such as cheerleading sneakers, uniforms, physicals, band trips, choir auditions... none of it.

At the age of eighteen, Janessa had had enough. She skipped town right after graduation, leaving her sister and parents in the dust. She put herself through school and became a no nonsense lawyer, and the best advice she could give her sister was to do the same. Fear and a touch of pride are holding her back, but Maddie is almost eighteen. Everyone has to grow up sometime, right?

What They Want From This Vacation ➳ Rowan wants to make up for lost time. He wasn't originally going to go on this trip, but ending up deciding to do so near last-minute. He wants to spend time with his friends in a way he had never let himself before, and maybe get a sense of himself before he's off to college.

Personality ➳ Rowan has an ingrained need to always be (or at least appear) better than he is. He doesn't want people to think that he needs them, because the less he needs them, the less of a burden he is on them. For this reason, he pretends to understand and be capable of things that he actually knows very little about. It is also for this reason that Rowan does not commonly express his emotions. He shows emotions, sure, but oftentimes they are falsified or partially suppressed in a manner that he hopes makes them less of an issue to others. At times, he wishes that someone would be observant enough to notice the discrepancy and force him to be honest about what he's feeling, but at the same time, he isn't sure that he'd be able to find the words even then. He's just so used to faking it that he has acquired very little emotional literacy over the years. It can make him appear high-strung or unsympathetic at times.

Despite his reserved nature and fear of showing weakness, Rowan wants to help others and make them happy to the best of his ability. His family comes first our of habit, but his friends come second. He tries to help them out as much as he can considering his anxiety and resulting strange relationship with emotions, and he puts their needs above his own. There is nothing he wouldn't do for his friends if he thought it would make them happy, even for a short while.

Biography ➳ Rowan is the oldest in a family of five children, having three younger brothers and a younger sister. His first brother having been born when he was two, he hardly remembers a time when he wasn't filling the role of "big brother." And with his family, it really is a role. With both parents working hard just to give the family what they need to get by, Rowan became akin to a third parent very early on. He was the one who constantly had to turn down invites to parties and sleepovers because his parents needed him at home with the kids. He tries not to ask for anything, and scarcely complains to anyone - friends or family - but the pressure of perfection - of making life just a little bit easier for his family at cost of his own childhood and identity - grates on him more and more as the years go on. This year, as a senior, it's become all the harder for him, and his family certainly isn't making it any easier. The oldest of his brothers is eternally self-centered and mindless of the family's situation - there's nothing he won't ask for. The next one down is more mindful, but he still gets to do so much more than Rowan ever had to. In fact, it seems like none of his siblings are asked to contribute anything or have any ounce of responsibility when compared to his own too-short childhood filled with obligations and carefully treads. Add two mid-life crises on the parts of his parents, and he can't help but wonder if he'll ever find a way out, if his family will survive without him.

Isolated from his peers by family-related obligations, it was only natural that Rowan seek out belonging elsewhere. The easiest route to this was through popular culture. Online friends meant he didn't have to feel as alone even when he couldn't be out and about with his friends from school. It meant having people his own age accessible to him, even if it was only through a screen. College will be the first chance he'll have to surround himself with people who need nothing from him and don't expect him to give in to them on a whim. He can't help but view it as a kind of freedom he's never had before, even if he feels guilty for viewing it this way.

Any Extras ➳ Quig is a casual nickname used only by friends, and not all the time. Rowan doesn't think of himself as "Quig," and neither does his family or teachers. He's fine with the nickname, however, and is considering asking people in college to call him by that name. A new name, a new way of thinking about himself, a new beginning.
