Fantasy Zombie Apocalypse

Gerrig would stare up at the ceiling, a multitude of thoughts filling his head. He was stuck in this trance for a minute or so until sleep bogged his mind. He yawned and looked over to the girl.

"Night, squirt."

And with that, he rolled over and was fast asleep.

Kayla smiled and drifted off into a deep sleep, she had a dream that night, for once, she didn't wake up having to cover her mouth, she just slept.

She woke the next morning to the smell of beans. "Gerrig? Is that what you call breakfast?" She asked.

Gerrig stood next to a small stove, casually mixing a pot full of beans with a pan frying eggs next to it. He kept his gaze on the food as he responded.

"Well, excuuuuuuse me, Princess. We don't have the luxury of a balanced breakfast anymore."

"No... I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that... Just meant... Didn't know people did that anymore..." Kayla said softly, feeling a bit bad, knowing her tired tone made her sound gruff and terrible. She got up and walked over to him. "It looks amazing, and smells amazing." She smiled up at him.

He would glance down at her a few times as he cooked, but kept his main focus on not burning any of the breakfast. I flip the eggs over on the pan and continue to let them cook.

"Don't worry about it. You must not be much of a morning person, eh?"

I point towards my duffel bag by my piles of blankets.

"You loom in there and you can find some juice boxes if you don't want water for breakfast.

"Um... How do you feel about rabbit for lunch?" Kayla asked, heading for the stairs to get her bag. "I was gonna save it for myself... But figured you'd really like some fresh meat." She smiled and looked back at him from the stairs as she started going up.

I raise an eyebrow at this and watch her walk to the stairs.

"Lunch? Aren't you leaving? You'll need the meat."

(Not my choice Apollo. It's Katilynns.)

Kayla looked down. "You're right... I should get going." She headed up the stairs and quickly packed some cans of food and the supplies she had gotten out last night. She didn't know why, but it hurt her to leave. She shook her head and quickly packed her bag before running down the steps and heading to the door. She struggled to open it since it was still locked. She finally unlocked it and walked out, leaving it open.

Hearing the door open, I quickly grab the plate I just finished putting an egg and some beans down and and rushing to the door, calling out to Kayla.

"Hey! Don't you want breakfast? You never know when it could be the last time you eat!"

"I'll be fine." Kayla said weakly as she held herself, not turning around to face him. You got attached Kayla! What were you thinking?! You should know better by now! She screamed as she fell to the ground, feeling a runner on top of her. She kept pushing up on it, trying to get it off of her as it bite at her, and clawed.

Gerrig immediately drops the plate and grabs the Runner by its hair, pulling it off of Kayla and throwing it onto the ground. It quickly recovers and launches itself at Gerrig, but he knew it was coming. He quickly lands a Haymaker right into its face, and it falls to the ground. Gerrig then runs over and viciously begins stamping on its neck. After a minute of punishment, a SNAP is heard, and the runner stops moving. Gerrig takes a deep breath as he examines his work and turns back to Kayla, crouching down to her level to help her up.

"You alright?"

Kayla nodded as she held onto him. "Thank you... Thank you..." She stuttered out. What was wrong with her? She ran out like that, she knew better, there was something about Gerrig that was messing with her mind. She knew she couldn't be alone right now, she would have died without him.

Gerrig would sigh as he held her up, looking from her to the house again, before chuckling and moving her over to the front door.

"You must not have been in the Wild for long. There's a reason I keep three locks on the door, you know."

He set her down on the front steps and looked down at her.

"What were you thinking? Do you even have a plan? Where are you going?"

"I don't know anymore Gerrig... South, to the sea... That's where my parents were taking us..." Kayla said softly. "And I've been out on my own for a long time okay? My decisions are just clouded right now..." She added as she looked up at him. "I'm sorry if I bring in any infected because of my scream..."

Gerrig looked confused for a moment, but he shook his head and stared at her in thought.

"The south, towards the sea....."

He paced around outside for a minute, with luckily no infected deciding to show up. He then turned to Kayla and spoke in a rather gruff tone.

"I'm heading south too. Probably not for the reason you are, but I am heading there. From what I just saw, you don't seem to have much experience in this sort of thing. So I'll tell you what; I'll go with you. And once you've gotten to where it is you're going, I'll head to where I need to go. Sound good?"

Kayla nodded. "Sounds good." She stared at the ground like a child in trouble, she knew it wasn't like that, and she was happy to go with Gerrig, but... He probably thinks she's some stupid kid now that can't take of herself.

Gerrig let out another sigh as he pat her on the head before going back inside.

"Pack everything you can. We're going to need it."

He went up the stairs and began putting some of the cans into his duffel bag, careful not to break the fragile momento in there.

Kayla followed him up the stairs and began stuffing cans into her bag and cutting some twine she had to roll up blankets and keep them together. Her bag was full as she tied the blankets down to the top.

After a few minutes he picked up the now full duffel bag and turned to Kayla.

"Ready? There's probably no way we're coming back here."

Kayla looked around then nodded. "I'm ready." She stood up. Throwing her back pack on and heading down the stairs, peaking out the door and listening before opening it and waiting for him. "Come on." She called.

Gerrig looked down at the girl and laughed. "Whatever you say, Captain." He exited the door, looking up and down the street, then continued down it. While most would probably take it extremely slow and wary, Gerrig made his way down the street in a very relaxed manner, his axe slung over his shoulder as he began to hum a little song to himself. "Keep up, squirt! Don't wanna be left alone out here!" He called back to her.
