Kayla "Kay" Hansen

21

Bisexual

Kayla strolled the empty streets in the small town centered in Alabama she believed. She smiled and rolled the machete blade over her hand as she listened to the distant screams of the runners, smiling.

She entered a building and smacked her machete on the door, making a loud noise, she knew if a runner or clicker were inside, they'd come to greet her. She flinched as she heard footsteps on the upper floor, slow and even, not infected. She readied her pistol and stared at the steps.

The footsteps move at an even pace, stopping every once in a while, then resuming their march. From below, you can hear a deep, gruff voice mumble to itself.

"Blast it, Vinnie....you were supposed to be back an hour ago..."

Kayla stood her ground, pistol raised. "Stop!" She shouted as she heard the gruff voice and the heavy footsteps. Her body became tense and stared at the steps. "C-come all the way down the steps! Slowly!" Her voice began to shake, she hadnt seen a human in such a long time. She took a deep breath and watched the steps.

(No its okay, just keep doing it how you were)

The sound of the steps stop abruptly. You can tell that whoever is up there doesn't seem to have expected this voice. The steps resume and begin to slink slowly over to the stairs. Thumps are heard as each step is taken, and eventually, a man makes his way down to the bottom of the stairs. He is a brutish looking man, around six feet tall, with a very muscular build. His hair reaches to the nape of his neck and is unkempt, black in color. His dark green eyes stare back at Kayla, as he fiddles with the gray vest he wears, a dull yellow shirt underneath, along with some gray cargo pants and some black combat boots. He lifts up a rather fierce looking ax, most likely a fire ax before it was upgraded with what appears to be a grip and half a sawblade in its handle, and places the flat of its blade on his shoulder as he looks Kayla up and down.

"......You're not Vinnie."

Kayla gulps. She looked the man up and down. Her tiny body was shadowed by his. Her skinny, 5'3 body, dressed in a dirty white tank-top, ripped up blue skinny jeans, and brown hiking boots, her hair pulled back as she sighed and watched him.

"No I'm not..." She said softly. "I just want some food and a little bit of water, enough to fill my cantine..." She said softly, but a bit more sternly.

The man would give her another piercing glare, and he looks out the window towards the empty street, then back towards the girl.

"Heh. Dont we all?"

He then proceeds towards the girl, fearless in the face of her handgun, and upon reaching her, pulls out a large bottle of water from his back pocket and hands it to her.

"You can have this if you answer one question: did you see a short man out there? Leather jacket, weird hair, a bit smaller than you?"

Kayla thought back to her long walk. "No... If he had been on my way through I would've noticed... Actually... You're the first thing I've seen once I walked into this town... First person I've seen in a long ass time too." She said softly as she drew her arms back and slowly holstered her pistol, leaving her hand on it. Loose strands of her dirty, raggity, blonde hair fell in front of her eye on the right side.

The man would sigh as he hands her the water and steps back over to the window, looking out.

"Damn it, Vinnie.....left me behind again...."

He would turn from the window and back to the girl.

"If you want some food, look upstairs. Me and Vinnie collected a good amount before he....left. Take what you need."

He would then turn back to the window, gazing out with a glazed over expression.

"Not that its my business... But, why would he leave? I feel like it'd be nice to have someone else..." Kayla said softly as she slowly approached him, slipping the bottle into her back pack. She leaned on the wall beside him, curious, it was the apocalypse, he could have easily over powered her, but he didn't.

The man would turn his head to her, his eyes tearing up, but he quickly wipes them away.

"It's just how Vinnie is. Survival above everything. And if he has a guarantee to survive by sacrificing someone else, you can bet he'd do it. And that's probably what he did."

He would turn back to the window, then shake his head, turning his whole body to the girl and extending his hand.

"But enough of my rambling. I shouldn't be telling my life problems to a stranger who I don't even know the name of. Speaking of which, I'm Gerrig. You?"

Kayla looks at his hand then back up at him before taking hold of it and shaking it. "Kayla, you can call me Kay." She said softly as she shook his hand. He was so strong. She glanced outside as the sun began to set. "What would I have to do to get a place to stay for the night?" She asked as she looked up at him.

Gerrig grins as he motions for her to follow him as he starts for the stairs.

"Just don't eat all the food while I'm sleeping. Or else I'll have to kill you."

He said this last part with a slow head turn and a dark glare, quite unfitting to his character, before he turns again and starts up the stairs.

Kayla slowly followed him up the steps. She almost took a step back when he glared at her. "I won't." She said softly. She looked around the top floor, two spots for sleeping. She laid her bag on the head part of the sleeping bag. "Thank you." She made sure he could hear him. "I really appreciate this." She said after a pause as she sat down, looking at the cans he had set out, her stomach growling.

Gerrig felt a smile crawl onto his face as she thanked him. It had been a while since he had heard a thank you of any kind, and he greatly enjoyed it. He moved over to his sleeping spot on the ground, a rather large mess of blankets on the floor with a pillow. He gestured to the mattress in the middle of the room, which had a thick looking blanket and a bigger pillow.

"You can sleep there. That used to be Vinnie's spot but....well, he's not using it anymore, huh?"

He chuckles as he pulls a small pocket knife out of his front pocket and walks over to Kayla, handing it to her.

"Go ahead and use this to open a few cans. Eat till you're full, it won't matter much. We collected quite a surplus."

Kayla sat on the bed and shook her head at the knife. "I have a can opener... Unlike others I knew I'd be thriving on canned good for awhile... So I packed one at the beginning of the out break. Thanks though." She pulled out her can opener and opened a can of peaches. She took her first bite, a rather pleasurful noise escaped her she then looked to Gerrig, hoping he wouldn't make fun of her for that. "Sorry." She paused to swallow. "Just been awhile since I've had food." She said embarrassed. Then began eating once more.

Gerrig nodded solemnly, walking over to the window and looking back outside.

"It's getting dark. Any chance Vinnie had of coming back is gone for sure now."

He turned and began walking towards the stairs.

"I'm going down to lock the door and check a few things. Dont make a mess of things."

"I won't." Kayla whispered as she continued to eat. She watched him walk away. She smiled as she remembered his smile, it was pretty handsome, before he reach the steps she called. "You should smile more." She then shrunk into her can of food.

Gerrig turned at the top at the stairs with a raised eyebrow, but turned quickly with a chuckle and walked downstairs, walking quickly to the door and giving the locks a firm click into place before walking over to the small kitchen area where a duffel bag lay on the table. He slowly zipped it open and gently took a small framed picture out from it. The picture was old and worn, and showed a young, burly teen boy grinning at the camera and giving a thumbs up, with a smaller teen girl with long black girl and a small gentle smile. Gerrig would sigh as he observed the picture for the ump-teenth time.

Kayla sat on her mattress, can of peaches finally finished off. She stood up and looked out the window, darkness falling, and with it, infected will fill the streets. She felt her heart seize up before quickly sitting, not wanting to cry. She hated the darkness, well, what the darkness brought. She remembered her father. "We have to leave at night." He said... That's how she lost him and her mother shortly after that. She pulled her knees to her chest and sniffled.

Gerrig shook his head violently, brushing the thoughts of his past away. Now wasn't the time to reflect on the past; he needed to focus on the present. He gently lay the photo back in the duffel bag and carefully zipped it up, slinging it over his shoulder and walking over to the window, closing the drapes so that the infected don't decide to investigate anything moving inside. He made his way slowly upstairs, dropping his duffel bag next to his pile of blankets before turning abruptly at the sound of sniffling, and to the sight of this Kayla in a ball. He stepped forward cautiously, looking down at her.

"Hey, uh....you alright down there?"

Kayla nodded but stayed quiet. She finally lifted her head. "I'm fine." She said weakly. "Just... Memories..." She said after a pause and smiled then laid down, facing away from him.

Gerrig stood there confused for a moment, but eventually shrugged and made his way to the windows, closing their blinds as well. 'Her problems aren't any of my buisness', he thought. 'She'll be on her way come morning; best I don't try to get attached to her.' With that, and the all the blinds closed, he walked over to his pile of blankets, removed his boots, and plopped down in the pile, stretching as he did so.

"Goodnight Gerrig." Kayla whispered. She couldn't let herself get attached, she knew she'd done that too many time and things went wrong after that. No new people, is what she always told herself. You're better off alone and you know it, she'd tell her self.
