(Excuse me for the horrible RP title (●´⌓`●). I may or may not have taken it from a Sleeping with a sirens song *Cough Cough*)

A silent sigh of irritation escaped the the lips of Caleb as he tried to push through the crowded hallways of Aviator high School. He needed to get to the lunch room and quick; he had a study session with his best friend Derrick Thompson. Derrick was usually a pretty down to earth and pretty chill person, but when it came to tardiness he'd rip your head off. The school was always so packed, but with over 2,000 kids in the building how could it not be. When he reached the end of the hall, it was less crowded and he actually had room to breath. He headed for the doubled doors, and just when he was about to open them, the doors opened in his face. The doors hit him squarely in the noise, which stung immensely. He took a few steps back holding his noise. A few cheerleaders walked through the doors, and when they saw this merely laughed and brushed passed him.

This was the bad part about having his horrible social status of 'Nerd'. He wasn't even worthy enough for an apology from those cheerleaders. Caleb didn't care about their reaction very much though. He was already to used to this treatment from the "Popular Crowd" sadly. Instead, brushed off the pain he felt from his nose and hurried to the lunchroom

Caleb pushed through the doors of the lunchroom but stopped short after entering because he saw that there was a huge crowd of people at the center of the lunchroom. He rolled his eyes. Usually that only happened when someone was involved in a fight or someone was getting pummeled on. He wasn't interested in such matters. He needed to find Derrick. He scanned through the lunchroom for the table the two of them usually sat at. His heart dropped when he saw derrick wasn't there. He only saw Derr a period before, so he wasn't absent; and he he'd die before he was late for anything , so that could only mean....

Caleb rushed towards the crowd almost tripping over himself. He shoved through the crowd of people until he reached the front. There, he saw Derrick on the lunchroom floor - blood gushing down his noise , with Josh Kenny hovering over him with a smirk. Josh was one of those jocks that loved picking on what he called "Dorks". He'd beat them up for no reason, just for the fun of it. Some people cheered as Josh continued to punch Derrick in the face, others gave sorrowful looks . Caleb watched in horror as Derick screeched in pain.

"Stop!" Screamed Caleb, "What the hell is wrong with you!?"

He tried to jump in to save his friend, but one of josh's Jock friends grabbed his arm, and then put him in an headlock. "ow!"

(Omg, I wrote Too much. I'm sorry about that)

(Not at all, it's perfect >w< And sleeping with sirens references are always appreciated =w=)

Marcus was actually feeling pretty chilled that lunchtime. The jocks had all just had a team practice session, from which they'd been let out early along with the cheerleaders, so they'd arrived in the cafeteria before anyone else. Thus, they had arrived to a rare moment of peace in a school so overcrowded, and everything had been going well. The guys were all clapping each other on the arm and psyching each other for the big game that was coming at the end of the week, and the girls were equally excited for their performance on the night. Even Marcus, who wasn't as fussed about football as he perhaps should have been, was caught up in the anticipation.

After grabbing some lunch he went to sit at the long table he and his mates always sat at. Claire, his blonde and beautiful cheerleader girlfriend, slipped into the seat beside him, gave him a kiss on the cheek, and then started debating the finer points of a cheerleading pyramid. Content to listen, Marcus made a couple of sly jokes about cheerleading that he didn't really mean, and since they both knew that, all it earned him was a slap on the arm and laugh from Claire.

When the bell rang the rest of their clique had joined them, and Josh Kenny kept trying to challenge everyone to a wrestling match right there and then on the table. Josh was - well, having had exposure to such things, Marcus would have been willing to bet good money that his teammate was on steroids. He took aggression to a whole new level, and before a big game he only got worse, fuelled by the testosterone-filled excitement of the team. That probably should have been enough to warn Marcus that some shit was going to go down.

Sure enough, as the rest of the school spilled into the lunch room, an unwitting nerd made the mistake of tripping over Josh's outstretched foot as he hurried to his lunch table. Marcus recognised the kid from his English class, Derrick or Declan or something like that. Unfortunately for Derrick, when he tripped his lunch tray went flying, and in a moment of terrible, condemning slapstick, the contents collided with Alex Turner, the team captain. Naturally, everyone else on the team was supposed to take this as a direct insult to them. Marcus just let out a slow, defeated sigh; this wasn't going to end well.

And he was right. Two minutes later, Josh had Derrick nailed to the floor, beating the crap out of his face. It seemed irrelevant that Josh had been the one to purposefully trip him, the poor nerd had dared defile his beloved captain. Marcus was pretty sure Josh's devotion to the captain bordered on homoerotic at times, but hell, who was he to talk?

Whilst the team gathered around the beat down, Marcus remained at the table, not really in the mood to watch yet another poor skinny kid get pulverised. Claire stayed seated too, silent now as she picked at her food. She waited a few moments before, without looking over at him, saying quietly, "Make them stop, would you?" And that was all the encouragement Marcus needed. Getting up from the table, he shouldered his way through the amassed crowd and located the fighting pair. He was surprised to spot another one of the nerds trying to reach Derrick. They were probably friends, but still, Marcus hadn't seen many of the nerds willingly jump into a fray, even if it was to try and rescue a friend. Marcus didn't recognise him.

Still, he had other things to focus on other than valiant, if potentially suicidal nerds. Marcus grabbed the pair and wrestled Josh off of Derrick, pulling him up and immobilising him by restricting his arms. Josh was a good twenty pounds heavier than him, and undoubtedly stronger, but Marcus had broken up enough fights in his life to know how to use that against an opponent. "What the hell are you doing?" Josh snarled, violently trying to wrangle his arms free. The other jocks seemed uncertain of whose side to take, both fighters now their teammates.

"Josh dude, come on. You know you can't get done for fighting again or they're gonna kick you off the team," Marcus said, grunting slightly as Josh did a good job of elbowing him in the ribs. Marcus had hit the right spot with that remark, however, and Josh fell still, panting heavily.

He remained motionless for a moment before he tugged his arms free and then ploughed through the crowd, out of the lunchroom. Those teammates closest to him gave the rest of the group a guilty smile before they followed after him. "Well that was fun," Claire remarked dryly, appearing through the now dispersing crowd and linking her arm with Marcus's. Marcus gave her a smirk for her comment before looking down at the beaten nerd. His face didn't look much like a face anymore, and he was probably more than a bit shaken.

"We ought to get him to the nurse," Marcus thought aloud, nodding down at Derrick. "Derrick- it is Derrick, right? Think you can stand?" If not, Marcus could always lug him over to the nurses office; it wouldn't have been the first time he had to clean up Josh's mess.

(wow, so... mine ended up waaaay too long. apologies >w<)

Tears started to weld up in Caleb's eyes. He had seen Derrick get wailed on before but this was pretty bad. It was horrible watching his friend get beat up by that arsehole of a jock. He couldn't understand why Josh had such anger issues. The crowd wasn't making it any better with there shouts and cheers. He struggled to get out of the headlock his head was hurtfully in. But it was so use. The jock and himself were in two different weight classes, it was near impossible to get free. Another set back of being so scrawny and skinny.

It wasn't until Marcus Skoll joined the fray that things started to calm down . He knew Markus from seeing him in the hallways; Although everyone in school knew Markus. He was one of those guys that everyone liked for one reason or another. He had witnessed Marcus break up a few fights, and save a few Nerds from being jumped and pummeled on. Caleb personally didn't really care for him. Although he didn't really care for anyone that even held the title of "Jock". Caleb sighed a sigh of relief when the Jock that held on him so tightly finally let go, and ran quickly after Josh. He quickly ran over to derrick who was still on the floor in fetal position, while holding his probably broken noise. Caleb helped him up off his back, and manged to get him setting on the floor.

"Oh my god Derrick, You're bleeding!"

"Gee, thanks for the news flash Captain Obvious. " Caleb rolled his eyes. Well at least his sarcasm was still intact.

" Shut up, this is no time to be sarcastic. We gotta get you to the nurse"

They both looked to Marcus when he offered help. A small smile appeared on Derricks face, "Yeah you got it right it's Derrick. And I think I may need a little help standing. Tha -"

"No, we don't need your help, thank you very much. We're good here" Interjected Caleb. As for as he was concerned, he didn't want any Jocks help at the moment. Why would he? One of those Jerks just pummeled his friend to the ground, how could he not be angry. Sure he was thankful that Markus helped them, but he didn't want his help besides that.

"Not to be rude bro, but your kind of weak. You won't be able to carry me all the way to the nurses office" said Derrick firmly. Caleb mumbled displeased, but he didn't argue. When arguing with derrick he usually lost anyway.

"Fine. Markus.....would you mind helping?''

Marcus watched on as the brave-and-potentially-suicidal nerd dashed forward to tend to his fallen kin, and he laughed at the sassy comment Derrick made in response. The rest of the jocks mooched back to their table, laughing off the incident before their conversation returned to the topic of The Big Game. Claire lingered, her eyes studying Derrick to check he wasn’t going to die or anything melodramatic like that, before she gave Marcus a peck on the cheek and then returned to her friends and their discussion of their new routine. Apparently, it was incredibly edgy and exciting. Marcus was just glad that Claire seemed happy with it.

Focusing back on Derrick and his noble nerd buddy, Marcus had to fight the urge to raise an eyebrow in response to the noble nerd’s rebuff of his offer. He hadn’t meant to step on anyone’s toes by offering help… looking between the two nerds, he considered for a moment before he reached a conclusion. They were probably an item, judging by the angry one’s valiant self-sacrifice and Derrick’s casual teasing. Perhaps Marcus needed to work on his sass if he was going to appeal to boys as cute as the noble one.

Focus – god dammit he was distractible today. Blinking to clear his thoughts, Marcus grinned back at Derrick and then, careful not to piss of the angry one by making it look like he was being a knight in shining armour and trying to steal his damsel-man, he helped support Derrick by slipping one of his arms over his own shoulder, propping him up.

Football had made him strong enough to manage the dead-weight with ease, so they made their way to the nurse’s office pretty easily, the biggest challenge being the hordes of people swarming the corridors. “So, since you seem to magically already know my name, what’s yours?” He asked, looking over at the angry nerd. He didn’t want to piss him off again, but really he needed something else to call him by other than Angry Nerd. It would probably slip out one day to the guy’s face, and then Angry Nerd would likely become Irate Nerd. Marcus might be a rough tough jock, but even he was scared by that concept.

When they did finally arrive at the nurse’s office Marcus set Derrick down on the medical bed and then stepped back, not wanting to outstay his touching-allowed welcome. The nurse then moved in and took over, tutting about teenage boys and inspecting Derrick’s wounds.

(Sorry for such a late reply!)

Caleb found it weird accepting help from the last place he'd ever expect to find it. He never imagined a Jock would offer this much help to a couple of nobody nerds he has probably never seen before. Usually, jocks stuffed him in lockers, called him rude names that he'd prefer not to say, and made him do their homework. But not him. He actually seemed like a pretty decent person. This confused him, because he usually was able to read people rather easily. But he couldn't read Marcus and as much as be hated to admit this; it scared him. He hated not knowing something, and not being able to read Marcus troubled him.

Caleb was so immersed in thought that he actually hadn't heard Marcus ask a question.

"Um earth to Caleb? Are you in there?" Said Derrick.

Caleb blinked almost confused as to what was going on. "Yeah?"

"Marcus asked you what your name was, you dork."

"Oh right" He contemplated for a second weather to answer the question. What was the point of giving his name to someone who was probably going to forget it after this whole incident was over. Even if Caleb couldn't read Marcus, he was still a jock who knew way more important people then Caleb was. What were the chances that the two of them were actually going to talk like this again? He shrugged his thoughts off. He was thinking to much again.

"It's Caleb." He didn't bother to say anything else besides that. He didn't see why he should.

When they reached the nurses office, Markus set derrick on the table. Nurse Mcphee sighed when she realized it was derrick and Caleb again. "Oh Lord, What happened to you? Looks you have been from hell and back Derrick." Asked Mcphee.

"I'd prefer hell than what I'm feeling right now." Seethed Derrick.

If it wasn't obvious enough, Caleb and Derrick have been in this office more times than they can count. Again, it sucked being on the lower half of the popularity scale.

"Alright, I'm going to have to work on you for a while. I'll call home and let you go home early." Mcphee turned her attention to Caleb and Markus. "You two boys get to class alright? I'll take care of him"

Caleb shot her a thankful smile, then turned to Derrick "Get better okay?"

"I have balls of steel, I'll be fine" he joked. Caleb laughed, before giving him a hug and leaving the office. If there was one thing he loved about Derrick, he could make light of any bad situation.

Caleb didn't exactly know what to say to Marcus, while they walked together, back to lunch. He sucked at starting conversations with new people because he was so Socially awkward. It was a wonder how Derrick and himself became such close friends. He remembered that he hadn't thanked Markus for everything.

"Thanks for helping. I know you didn't have to do all that. I hope we didn't get you into to much trouble with your team mates"

Don't worry about it, and aww hells, Caleb is the more adora-bubble thing in the world. Shame to see Derrick go but ah, his sass shall be missed -w-

Laughing at the friendly banter - or what he now believed to be flirting - between the two nerds, Marcus gave Caleb a wry smile, glad to have a name for him other than Angry Nerd.

Marcus couldn't help but feel a little out of place when in the nurse's office, though he was normally so relaxed in social situations. He felt like the third wheel, what with Caleb, Derrick, and the nurse so clearly well acquainted. It didn't help that it was probably his friends who had helped create the opportunities to get to know each other so well. He wasn't one for picking on the less popular kids himself, having been regarded as trailer trash himself most of his life, but as the nurse patched up Derrick's train-wreck of a a face, he still felt guilty for not doing more to stop it. Problem was, standing up to knuckleheads tended to end one way and one way only, and Marcus really didn't want to get thrown out of a school for fighting again.

Moreover, he envied the two nerds. They were so chilled in each others company, and their back and forth seemed so... intimate. Part of him was kind of jealous. Hell, they even hugged for pity's sake. The fact that they were able to be so good-humoured, even after having been pummelled, was pretty admirable. Marcus didn't think he'd be able to deal with that sort of thing so acceptingly.

"See you round Derrick, good luck to your face," Marcus said as they left Derrick behind, giving him a short two-fingered wave in farewell. As he and Caleb walked back to the lunchroom, Marcus tried to shrug off the weird sense of envy he'd felt, particularly towards Derrick, who Caleb seemed so different around, nothing like the defensive angry nerd he'd been towards him. Marcus wasn't really a fan of people who acted like he felt, however, so fuck it, he just ought to be happy Derrick had survived an attack from the resident psycho. " 's my teammates' fault for being such assholes," Marcus said, shrugging off Caleb's thanks with a grin, before feeling bad for ragging on his friends. "They're not bad guys though, most of them just don't know any better. I'm sorry your boyfriend had to be on the receiving end of their idiocy."

(sorry it's shorter than usual, I'm ill and pathetic *cough cough* :P please forgive me o merciful one)

(Awww D: Don't apologize! I hope you get better!)

Caleb almost choked oh his own laugh after hearing Marcus regard Derrick as his boyfriend. He started to chuckle a bit and then it became out right boisterous laughter. It became so much that, he had to stop walking for a moment to hold his aching sides. He knew he probably looked like a complete lunatic to Marcus or maybe it looked like he was being over dramatic but he couldn't help himself. The thought of Derrick and himself ever dating was to ridiculous to not laugh at. For one, Derrick was straighter then an arrow hitting it's target; despite popular believe. He got boners like it was going out of style when looking at the cheerleaders, and he always complained to Caleb about his fear of dying a virgin. Caleb didn't worry about things like that. He had a million other things to worry about and losing his virginity was certainly at the bottom of his list.

Another thing was the fact that the two of them were practically like brothers, regardless of the fact that Caleb had five of those already. Derrick was the one person who understood him the most and vice versa. He was the guy Caleb could rely on whenever he got into any major trouble(Which wasn't often). The two of them met on the first day of middle school. Caleb got lost in hallways but he was to shy to ask anyone for directions. Derrick ran into him literally. He explained later that he was running away from some upperclassman who wanted to pummel him for tripping him in the hallway. It caused Caleb to fall flat on his face which resulted in him going to the nurse on the first day of school. Thankfully, Derrick helped him find his way to the office and they've been practically attached at the hip ever since.

The memory put a smile to Caleb's already smiling face. He wiped his eyes that were filled with tears of laughter.

"I'm sorry," he began "I just couldn't stop myself from laughing at that. Thanks for that" Caleb was in need of something to laugh at considering he was worrying about his friend up till this point. "Derrick isn't my boyfriend. Not in the slightest.Do we really seem that way?"

(opps I think I put way to much back story on Caleb's and Derrick's relationship. Sorry about that (⊙︿⊙✿)

Wheeeey, Caleb Derrick backstory xD It was much appreciated, don't worry, and damn Derrick is my new favourite straight character xD #bonerproblems =w=

"You're not?" Marcus said, slightly sceptically, although the seriously impressive laughter probably should have been confirmation enough. Marcus didn't think he'd ever seen anyone actually laugh that hard, and it had been the last thing he'd expected from Caleb. Perhaps filing him under the quiet, cagey nerd category had been a mistake, since he certainly didn't seem to be fitting into it.

Worse, the laughter was infectious, and Marcus couldn't help snorting at just how over the top Caleb's outburst was - Geez, were those actual tears in his eyes? "Well, yeah. I don't know, you two just seemed so close I guess I kind of presumed," Marcus reasoned with a shrug and a sheepish smile. At least the assumption of Caleb's sexual orientation didn't seem to have pissed him off, so things were all good there; Marcus got exposed to enough homophobic commentary from the team. He often wondered what would happen, and how they would react if he ever came out as bi, but that was another problem for another time.

Before he could ask why Caleb had found his comment so hilarious, however, or brave asking him if he swung that way - for, eh, scientific purposes, of course - they drew up before the lunchroom doors. From then on in it was a typical Mean Girls scenario of each clique having their own table, and thus journeying through the door translated to parting ways. Marcus liked Caleb, and his definitely-not-boyfriend Derrick, but he was still part of the team, and besides, fifteen minutes of tentative conversation hardly warranted him a right to continue talking to Caleb any longer than they were pushed together. After all, it was Marcus's friend who had put Derrick in the nurse's office; Caleb probably wanted him gone, if only to prevent the return of the dreaded Joshua. Or, perhaps he was overthinking things.

Pushing open the lunchroom door, Marcus lingered, waiting before going through. "I'll see you round?" he said, posing it as a question, as a way of asking permission to talk again.

(K ,Marcus is my new husband)

Caleb blinked twice before raising a skeptical brow at the question being asked. Was Marcus being serious or was he- what do the young people say? Oh right - 'Jerking his chain'. He actually wanted to talk more? Caleb imagined Marcus would probably ignore his existence after this incident was settled. There wouldn't exactly be any reason for them to talk in the first place anymore-and what about? He couldn't imagine the conversations that would arise between the two of them. This was the last thing Caleb expected to hear from the guys mouth.

He tried not to seem too mildly astonished, but anyone could see how surprised he was. He couldn't say he didn't want to speak to him; because that would be a lie. Marcus didn't appear to be like the other Jocks in school. He seemed like a pretty cool and genuine guy, and that was pretty rare.

"Yeah...see you around" He gave him a smile to make sure Markus knew that he meant it. He waved him a small bye before going the other direction. He didn't want to see Josh. If he was still in the cafeteria then he'd certainly still be in the mood for a fight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Caleb grinned while doing the math problem Mr. Locasta put on the board. The problem was supposedly "The hardest one of the whole period. " As Mr L. put it. But Caleb thought otherwise. He zoomed through the problem in an instant and sat quietly watching the other people in the room scratching there heads and staring at the problem in confusion. School was the one thing he was good at, besides house chores and getting beat up on a regular basis. Sure he lacked any athletic and physical ability but he had the intelligence to make up for it. Football players can get get touchdowns, but he could solve any problem easily.
When the bell rang towards the end of the period everyone rushed out a class like a couple of heard sheep. Caleb was about to join the rest of the students, when Mr.Locasta called his name to join him at his desk. Whenever Mr.Locasta called him over it usually had something to do with asking to join Math club. It wasn't like Caleb didn't want to join, because who wouldn't want to sit in room and talk about algorithms? But he had about a million other stuff to do and math club wasn't exactly his top priority at the moment.
"Yes Mr.Locasta?"
"Ah Caleb!" He excitedly said after he marked a "24%" on a test. It was coincidentally Josh's. He couldn't help buy internally laugh at that. Karma's a bitch ain't it.
"Would you mind doing me a favor after school?"
"I can't join Math club I -"
"No it's not about that." He interjected. Caleb raised a brow; Then what was it then?
"Mind tutoring a student for me?" He knew he probably would say no to this request. Again, he had family to worry about and tutoring someone who couldn't keep there own grades up wasn't his problem.
Though, it couldn't hurt to ask who it was right?
"Who do you have in mind?"
"So you'll do it?"
"Probably not"
Mr.Locasta smirked, "Well at least you're honest"
He opened his desk draw and looked through many test papers until he found the paper he was looking for at the very bottom of the drawer. He flopped it on the desk and looked to Caleb carefully. Caleb wanted to laugh when he saw the big read mark of 14% on the students trigonometry test. God that was horrible. He couldn't understand how that was possible to even get a grade more worse then Josh's. He looked to the name of the poor guy on the right of the paper. He stopped his mocking when he realized who it belonged to.
Marcus Skoll. The guy who only acknowledged his existence a mere two periods ago. The guy who saved derricks and himself all by himself. The guy who Caleb thought to be another irritating Jock but turned out to be an actually sincere person. The guy who Caleb can't read at all, so he has no idea what's he thinking. That guy.
Caleb kind of felt bad now that he realized who the test belonged to. Damn that must suck for him.
"As you may know," Began Mr.Locasta," Marcus is on the Foot ball team, and he's actually a pretty damn good player if I do say so myself. But with the grades he's getting in this class he might be kicked off the team. You're the best student I've ever taught Mr.Dolley. And He's probably the worst sadly. I'm hoping you could make some time in your busy schedule to maybe bump his grade up a bit? Plus I know you've been bugging me about the 99% you have in this class. I'll bump it up to an 100% if you do this for me. So how about it?" Mr.L looked earnestly at Caleb, waiting for an answer.
Caleb sighed. He really didn't have time to be tutoring anybody. He had to pick his little brothers up for school, pay the bills, clean the house, help people with homework, have time to do his own homework, and make room for studying. Fitting anything else to his everyday life would be exhausting. Too risky.
But.
He genuinely felt bad for the guy. He didn't want him to be kicked off his own team. He tried to imagine what his father would if he ever got fired from his football coaching job in the neighboring high school and he couldn't. Football was life to him; if that were taken away from him that would probably send him back into the deep depression when mom died. The same went for his two older brothers who were now playing college football in New York State. Despite the fact that Marcus wasn't very much "Jocky'' Caleb realized he was still a jock and football was probably important to him.
A sigh escaped Caleb's lips. He couldn't believe how sentimental he was. But then again, Derrick had always said Caleb was sucker for sob stories. "Fine.I'll do it. When do I start?"
Mr.L grinned,"I knew you'd come around. How about making a date with him after school? He's in my next class so I'll let him know what's happening. Thanks so much for doing this Dolley!"
Caleb forced a smile. What was he getting himself into?
(shit man, he'll be surprised to find out he's married. Sorry Caleb, guess this just turned into Fujoshistar x that guy what they kidnapped and married, aka Marcus :P Also Caleb, I hate to point this out to you you sweet thing, but I'm afraid you are a member of the young people xD p.s. I am damn jealous of Caleb's maths wizardry. I seriously want him as my new best friend, sorry - you get to kidnap Marcus, I'm commandeering Caleb xD no returns =w= )
Maths was... maths was fun. Because really, what could be more fun than sitting in a class for an hour, having all these crazy numbers come flying out of nowhere, ordering you to work out what the actual frig they meant? Then there were the words, horrible, terrible words, like 'fraction' or 'algebra', or, worst of all and god forbid, 'trigonometry'. Why people did these things to him, he had yet to understand. He'd never understood it and he wasn't dead yet, so why were they still dragging him though it?
As Mr. Locasta, the well-meaning but unfortunately powerless maths teacher explained to the rest of the class the concept of imaginary numbers - sweet jesus weren't numbers difficult enough without being imaginary? Marcus was convinced the world hated him - Marcus resorted to doodling in his notepad, slumped on one arm and not hearing a word the teacher said. He didn't mean to be rude, it was just that trying to tune in proved impossible; this was all well over his head. He'd long given up asking questions in class too, since it held everyone else up and rarely did much good. No, it seemed Marcus and numbers just weren't meant to be.
At the end of the class, everyone had their tests handed back to them, and Marcus sunk even further in his seat. He was seated beside Claire, who just so happened to be pretty darn decent at maths, and he could see from the angle he was slumped at that she'd scored a 70%. Marcus had never gotten a 70% in maths in his life. When his red 14% presented itself he tried to crack the mystery of how to sink into his chair, his face crimson. "I'm sure you'll get it next time," Claire said kindly, before returning to checking over her corrections.
"Mr. Skoll, please stay behind after class," Mr. Locasta said in a painfully loud voice as everyone packed their bags and filed out of the room. It took everything in Marcus not to scowl, shuffling to the front of the class like a kicked puppy.
"Sir, I swear I revised, I-"
"I know, I know," Mr. Locasta said, waving his hand to dismiss Marcus's usual excuses. "But this is a new low, even for you."
"I think you're forgetting that one time I got a 1% sir, and you only gave me that for spelling my name right," Marcus reminded him flatly, with a dry smirk. Fortunately for him, Mr. Locasta was the kind of teacher to laugh at his black humour rather than sternly glare at him, but Marcus knew that the teacher hadn't asked him to stay behind just to point out how badly he was failing.
"You'll be off the team if you fail another test, Marcus," Mr. Locasta said gravely, taking Marcus's test from him.
"I know sir."
"It's not my decision, just how things work around here. But, you'll be glad to know I've found you a tutor."
Marcus groaned. "Sir, I really appreciate you trying to save my ass, but you know I couldn't afford a tutor," Marcus reminded him, having had this discussion numerous times before.
"I am well aware of that fact, Mr. Skoll," Mr. Locasta said, looking over his test results and shaking his head, looking almost impressed at just how badly he had done. "That's why I've organised for my top student to tutor you."
"Mr. Locasta, I really don't think humiliating myself in front of-"
"Marcus, you need all the help you can get, and if that involves a little bit of humility so be it," Mr. Locasta said, more sternly this time. Silence fell between the pair before he sighed, handing Marcus's test back. "You'll be in good hands. Mr. Dolley is one of the most capable students I have ever taught, and I'm sure he'll take good care of you. I've organised for you two to meet in the library after school time. He ought to be over there waiting for you after school."
"You're not going to let me get out of this, are you?" Marcus guessed.
"No Marcus, I'm not,"Mr. Locasta said with a sweet smile, standing.
And thus, when the end of school came around, Marcus kissed Claire goodbye and waved to his fellow jocks before trailing over the library, trying his very best to think of a good excuse to get out of it. It wasn't that he didn't want to be good at maths, really, that would be great, but the process of getting there would be long, slow, and acutely embarrassing, especially if his tutor was so capable. Mooching into the library, he waved hello to the librarian and then dumped his things at a table, grabbing and seat and waiting, still playing at listing excuses.
When the bell rang for school to end, He quickly made his way to the library. He didn't want to be late for there first tutoring session, and considering who he was tutoring he'd have a lot of teaching to do. Caleb still couldn't get over that 14% he saw. He texted Derrick before entering the library. Caleb was supposed have picked his brothers up from school today, but with the circumstances now, he obviously couldn't.
"Mind doing me a huge favor?"
A text rang only a second later. Derrick was a fast texter, thankfully.
"Depends on what it is m8''
"
Pick up my brothers from school for me. Something came up"
"But I'm watching porn? And what came up?" Caleb rolled his eyes.
"I'll tell you later. And omfg I didn't need to know that TMI!"
"Fine. You owe me one bruh. And there's never TMI when your speaking to me. I thought you learned this by now" Caleb had to agree with that.
"Agreed. And thanks D."
"No Problemo Amigo"
He put his phone back in his pocket and he made his way into the library. There wasn't many people in the library to begin with. It was the end of school after all. Probably 20 students in total, but most of them were on the computers. It was easy to spot Marcus in the library because he was the only one wearing a varsity jacket. Most of the football players and cheerleaders left to hang at the mall, or someone's house.
He dumped his things on the floor before he sat down. He sucked at conversation but he was pretty good at greetings so he started from there,"So we meet again" Said Caleb half smiling.
((Derrick is a true bae xD Though I fear the porn won't help with the #bonerproblems :P ))
Flopping his head backwards to see who his tutor was, vaguely recognising the voice, Marcus's resentful expression froze when he spotted Caleb. "Crap," he said, before he could help himself, sitting up straight and rocking his chair back onto all fours. Anyone but him. "Caleb." Jumping to his feet, Marcus nearly knocked over his chair with the force of his movement, leaning back against the table.
Realising he'd acted like a complete twat, Marcus scratched the back of his head and tried to think of some way of explaining why he'd greeted Caleb with swearing. It hadn't exactly been a warm welcome. The thing was, he'd been expecting... well, pretty much anyone but Caleb. Some patronising idiot, yes, but someone he didn't care about the opinion of all that much. Caleb on the other hand was someone he didn't want thinking him a complete idiot, and moreover, he already knew that Caleb was perfectly capable of being sassy when he wanted to. Marcus was going to get his ass-kicked verbally, and lose all chance of being friends with Caleb, ever. Of course he'd be the most capable student Mr. Locasta had ever taught. This was just his luck.
"Uh, sorry about that," Marcus said awkwardly, grinning lopsidedly to try and cover up how much of an idiot he'd been. "I, uh, didn't know it was going to be you." Looking down at his feet, he exhaled and tried to ignore the fact that he was definitely flushed now. "Well this is kinda embarrassing. I mean, thanks for- thanks for agreeing to do this. You're mad for doing it, but yeah. I kind of need it." He was rambling. He knew he was rambling, and undoubtedly making more of an idiot of himself, but once his mouth had started running away with itself it couldn't be stopped.
"But I'm kind of dyscalculic as hell so..." Laughing nervously, Marcus fiddled with his pen, clicking and unclicking the end. "This is- this is probably going to be hell for you. I take 'slow learner' to a whole new level. I mean, I got a fourteen percent in my last test so if you want to abandon ship... I get it," he said, looking up at Caleb, not sure if he wanted him to say no or not. On the one hand, no would spare Marcus the humiliation, and hey, maybe someday Caleb, Mr. overachieving, would forget that he'd gotten and 14% and actually regard him as a competent human being. On the other hand, if Caleb did decide to tutor him... it sounded cliche even in Marcus's head, but it would give him a chance to get to know him better. And he really did want to, both because he was the nerd who willingly dove into a fight and because he was oddly charming.
Caleb bit his lip to keep himself from laughing a bit at Marcus's clumsiness. He wasn't offended at the fact that Marcus greeted him with such a derogatory term, but he couldn't help but grin a bit at the clumsy football player. For such a great football player, he didn't seem very poised. "It's alright" He said reassuringly, "No biggie." It was quite obvious now that that Marcus had no idea that Caleb was going o be the one tutoring him for today.
He wondered for a second if Marcus didn't exactly want him as a tutor but quickly brushed the thought out of his head. There wasn't any reason that Caleb could think of that would make Marcus not want him as a tutor. It definitely wasn't because of his social status, and not to toot his own horn but Caleb was pretty damn good in math so Marcus shouldn't have any problem with having himself as a tutor. Although, now watching the usually aloof and cool Marcus babble on to himself, he wondered what was wrong with him. Was he ...nervous? But what for? It was only Caleb - the super nerd. If anyone should be nervous right now it should be Caleb. He was the one about to tutor one of the star quarterbacks and probably the most popular guy in aviator high.
He hated glorifying people but in all honesty Marcus deserved all the praise he received. Weather you liked him or not everyone had to agree that the guy was hardworking. He was probably the hardest working person on the team. Caleb admired him for that. Which was why he hated listening to him degrade himself like that.
"I'd never leave you like that.I mean, that would kind of suck for you. I actually want to tutor you, so don't worry about being a slow learner, alright?" He smiled, " Besides, I've got to younger siblings so I'm used to teaching. So lets get started okay?" He hoped he reassured him enough.
Caleb went to pick up one of the textbooks he placed on the table, and ended up accidentally brushing his hand up against Marcus's. On reflex, he quickly retreated his hand knocking down the text book on the floor on accident. Now it wasn't the fact that he touched Marcus, because Marcus had nothing to do with it. But it was because he hated anyone touching him, besides, maybe Derrick and his own family. When mom died he acquired this fear of losing anyone who touched him. Caleb was the last person mom hugged before her horrible hit and run accident. He knew it was stupid of himself to blame himself over something he had no control over but it was his way of coping,and nothing anyone could say to him at this point could detour him from thinking this way. He hadn't told anyone that he felt this way, not even derrick. It was too personal to talk about and it was more then likely than not that he would end up crying and that was something he didn't do. Ever.
"Sorry.." He said Embarrassed. He hoped Marcus didn't take his retreat as an insult to him or anything.
