Your Favorite(or prefered) Exalted martial arts style

I´m not really sure where to put this but here it is anyways I was wondering what your favourite Martial arts style in exalted was since this is an anime fantasy with lots of it.


My preference is Five Dragons fight as one Since it allows you to wield swords and the charms are quite nifty and not at all that expensive.


Anyways I just want your take on this and If you feel like it the reason you like that particular style.


Please don´t kill me if you see any typos(or at least not yet)
 
Jakk Bey is the Undefeated Tiger of the East, his favorite Combo is the Two Hungry Tigers and Tiger Prana Stance, what do you think?  Not so much for the style, in and of itself, but for the style that goes with it.  


If you're going to lead a damn army, you need something that the kids can rock the party with.
 
Sounds cool and totally acceptable to me, btw the character who I am currently playing Garret is a solar who uses Five dragons to great effect btw Five dragon force blow rocks when u use it with a Big sword.
 
I myself prefer Tiger Style because of the versatality of the tiger claws. However, I like to think that Snake Style has a definate edge in putting you opponets into a sense of superiority.
 
I do have to agree that Five Dragon Style is very useful and is definately one of my choices if I make a martial artist, who will have a style with compatible signature weapons... but you should also consider crafting your own personal terresterial styles...

All the martial arts in Exalted suck.


Oh, <i>mechanically</i> most of them are ok. Most.


But descriptively, having martial arts styles as charm cascades is a total botch.


Take a moment to read over the Five Dragon Style. Its ok; I'll wait. Now, what exactly does a person who knows this style *do*? They can wear a sword and armour while using the style. There's some hitting really hard, and some parrying really good, and some athletics bonuses. hurray, we have a collection of mechanical effects! But what does it look like? Does the artist stand tall and haughty like a dragon, striking quickly and suddenly like dragon's breath? It doesn't say. I guess so. Maybe not. So how does this affect their athletic ability? What does it look like when they soak a blow with Five Dragon Fortitude? It doesn't say. But it sure is a great set of charms. Just one without a single word of description as to what would differentiate someone fighting this way from someone using melee.


Snake style and the other animal styles are a little better. All the snake style charms are all snakey! So, presumably someone who fights with snake style moves, um, snakeily. Even when they're making MA attacks or parries without a charm? Uh. I guess so. If you want. Or if that's to much hassle I guess the rest of the time they can just do kung-fu.


There are some good ones; Celestial Monkey Style has a fairly strong descriptive theme to it, and by limiting your virtues it helps reinforce the fact that this isn't just a bunch of charms you're learning - its a whole way of fighting. It's still far from perfect, but at least it tries.


So, in answer to your question, it would have to be Celestial Monkey Style, for sucking less than the others.

Get off my case and go on one of your little rants at Fruan. Explain to him how the lack of descriptive text is an opportunity to stunt and describe his actions in a thematically appropriate fashion. For Solar 1, Snake Style could have been something learned under the hot desert son after a greedy brother left said Solar to die. Only by emulating the cobra could the Solar learn to survive in the harsh desert while his wounds healed, only by emulating the cobra could he catch food, etc. So when he uses Snake style, it's different from Solar 2, who learned it while he was out in the Threshold, learning from rattlesnakes, or something. If it's 'just' Snake Style, and you're happy with it being 'just' Snake Style, fine. But you need to rant on about it as only you can, Jakk, and deliver some strange moral as well that lets everyone know your nose is tilted far enough back that you are looking down your nose at everyone.

I was attempting to agree with you, that the system for styles is a bit lack luster.  I solved it in part by importing some of the elements from WoD: Combat.  


There isn't much difference between styles, save for Charm choices in most of the Martial Arts in the BWB. I address this problem with one solution. Others can do so in other fashions--or be satisfied with what's there, and roll on like a big wheel.


Or I suppose, take issue with folks when they agree with you, and get all prickly like a old cat with a bad case of the piles...
 
Anyways if you don´t like things you can always change em no need getting riled up because we don´t agree if we had nuclear arms we´d all probably be dead right now.

Sort of. They're too busy dealing with Quebecois, Indians (as defined under the Indian Act), Metis, Inuit, and other small, special interest groups to get the pills to me within a time frame for you to even recognize a difference in behaviour.


If I filled out the paper work today and got it all mailed off by the end of the business day, I'd be set to receive the pills by December, 2009, assuming no catasprohpe occurs in the interim, no reform to Health care, the Indians don't take over like their scholars all write about wanting to, etc.

Yes, the Charms are interesting and all, but it doesn't really cover what the style is really all about. I have attempted to rectify this a bit with Fight, and the changes that I made to that Ability.


I saw something similar to your earlier statement about how lack luster the description were, and that was how I went about solving it.  Rather than just bemoaning that beyond Charm cascades it's a botch, I went and tried to rectify it.


If you'd like me to rant, I can. With feeling, and three part harmony, but we usually have Little Joe for that, and I'd rather not step on his toes there. That's his gig, not mine.

Perhaps you should look into your heritage and see if you have any Indian blood. There's a pretty good chance that one of your evil white ancestors raped an Indian at some point.

Which statement, Jakk? Find it for me. I don't have your Jakk Bey vision that lets me see things that are not there. All I said prior to your response to me was:


"Earth Dragon Style, or Jade Mountain."


That is what you responded to with your strange shit about your Fight ability. What am I bemoaning, Jakk? Where am I calling cascades a botch?

I did. It didn't happen. They got here too late for the general raping of Indians. Even if it were the case, the best I could hope for would be Metis status, and the Metis are fucking assholes who want the definition for Constitutional rights to be people who can trace their heritage back to the Red River area of Manitoba (which I cannot, even looking at the Irish part of the family tree from my mother's side).


On my dad's side . . . I have a grandfather who moved over from China, then ditched to the U.S. and was never heard from again. My grandmother came from the Ukraine.


Then there is the fact I look painfully caucasian. I can't claim any sort of minority rights.

And if the Indians -did- take over, I wouldn't get pills even if I was one of them. I'd have to go through some 'healing' ritual that would take a holistic view of my life and try to find the imbalance within that causes my 'rage.'

Fight? I gather you have combined Martial Arts and Brawl into one ability. I have done the same, but would very much like to see how you have done it. Could you maybe explain it in further detail or point to a place were it is explained?

OK, now this thread makes more sense.


And as this will hopefully put an end to the namecalling and hairpulling, it's probably safe for me to come out now.


An idea I've been throwing around to make MA styles a little more pervasive is to make the MA ability work like Craft. So, instead of having MA 4, you have to choose something like MA (Tiger Style) 4. This way it becomes obvious that even your mundane MA actions are tiger flavoured. And, of course, you can only use the apropriately flavoured MA with MA charms.


This has the additional benifit of allowing beings who are unable to learn charms the use of a styles weapon and armour restrictions/benifits, making MA and brawl mechanically distinct for mortals. Sadly this throws certain MA styles insanity into a harsher light - Under this system mortals learning 5 Dragon Style effectively have an ability that lets them weild a sword as well as Melee does and fight unarmed as well as Brawl does. I hold this to be a failing of 5DS rather than my MA mod, but that's pretty holllow and academic.


That learning a new MA style requires learning a new abilty may not be desireable in your game (If it features Siderials, for instance), but allowing the possibility for a character to be a master in one style while still a novice in another seems fair enough to me - While the distinction exists in the cannon rules system in the sense that they will have all the charms from one tree and only a few of the other, the character's ability to parry and attack with the two modes of fighting will always be identical.
 
How about we stick to the topic, okay? The new edition combines both brawl and martial arts, but in the mean time which of the current MA's is your favorite?

Anyways intiresting thought on "specialized" martial arts skill although I prefer the original rules myself.

Speaking solar MA only, Ebonshadow form without doubt.


Both because I like the "sneaky like a shadow" description and the effects granted by the charms in the tree, stealth, parazysation, atlethics and long distance travel.
