History

Dremmington Academy began life as a monastery, back during the age of human rule. Come the Beasts' uprising and usurping of power, it was burned almost entirely to the ground in defiance to the humans' god.

Around 300 AE, a revived interest in human culture spread amongst Beast society and Dremmington Monastery was restored during a period where such things were fashionable. As this enthusiasm for old human religions waned, it was repurposed as a modest finishing school. However, as the surrounding town of Dremmington became a hotspot for intellectual innovation, cultural production, and magical development, so too did Dremmington Academy ascend in prestige. Demand shifted it from finishing school to university, and it has since become one of the most highly respected, if not the most highly respected of universities for the arcane arts.

In recent years, it has attracted a great deal of criticism for both permitting human students in with Beast students, and for allowing humans to undergo their studies without carrying out appropriate duties of servitude. Dremmington has defended this position by arguing that better trained human magicians with an intimate familiarity of operating within Beast society will make for better assets to that society, and ease their later integration as qualified witches and free citizens. There are plenty at Dremmington, both in the school body and in the staffing population, who do not agree with this stance.

Locale

Though not the political capital (that remains London), Dremmington is unofficially and almost universally seen as the intellectual capital of Albion, a kind of ground of an ongoing renaissance and enlightenment in Beast society. Though a modestly sized city, it is home to some of the greatest architecture, theatre, writers, and thinkers of all over Albion.

Dremmington Academy occupies a location almost perfectly central to the city, and though the Academy has endeavoured to keep much of their grounds in tact despite pressures from development institutions, it is but a ten or fifteen minute walk from central campus into the city proper. Thankfully, Dremmington has done much to preserve much of its natural beauty in amongst the architecture, and it is home to parks and a functioning waterway system.

(In case you didn't peg it by now, Dremmington is essentially a fantasy Oxbridge hybrid. Because Oxbridge does do that aesthetic rather well.)

In amongst the intellectual discourse, the public surgery galleries, the theatre in the park, there's plenty of public houses and less salubrious institutions for those inclined to unwind from their studies. Galley Row, right where the public executions are held, serves as something of the criminal refuge of Dremmington, and those looking for untoward services or the underground market might wish to tread here— but you'd be well advised to do so lightly.
