Fantasy Witch Coven Roleplay: Anyone Interested?

immutableMirror

no dogs allowed on the moon.
Hey everyone! Would anyone be interested in a coven-esque roleplay? I've been watching the third season of American Horror Story and it's given me a lot of ideas! If anyone would be interested, or has any ideas to contribute, let me know!

I'm so glad! Part of me was worried posting a thread like this would be a dead end.
As for some ideas:
-Would an academy-esque setting interest y'all?
-Maybe it could be set in New Orleans!
-Each witch has one inborn talent (clairvoyance, pyrokinesis, invisibility) and can additionally work on other magic-type stuff? Such as palm reading, necromancy, etc.
-Maybe a select few could have a couple of abilities.
-This is totally ripping off of AHS, but maybe one in each "generation" is the "Supreme", meaning they develop each ability over time.
-Having it be kinda dark? Them having to live in secret, keep powers hidden, etc.
-Other characters could be non-witches, if they want! A possible antagonist, that kind of thing.

Feel free to speak against any of these ideas, or add any of your own!

Quick question! Which era would this be set in? Are we talking about a whole throwback to a Salem-esque time, something like the 50's or modern witches? + Are the witches strictly female?

I was thinking about this taking place in modern times! At least, probably not in the classic "Salem" or old timey New Orleans setting. If you'd rather place it around the 50s or 80s or something we can! However, I think toying with modern times and incorporating them into some of the old, classic witch stuff could be fun!

I’m all for the New Orleans setting (born and raised ^_^). I’d say more modern times, because back in the day you’d have to deal with voodoo queens and what not. And would there being warring sides? Like a group that would follow the teaching of someone like Marie and then another for Fiona.

If you guys would be interested in that, I'd love to! I need to do more research on it, but I can find some definite differing school-type stuff. Would you be interested in having teacher/student characters, or would you prefer just having a group of young adult witches living together?

Totally double posting, but if we are interested in multiple covens, they could differ based on how they use magic? Divided based on ideologies and stuff.
For example:
A coven that lives among people normally and tries to suppress their powers
A coven that uses their powers and stays in isolation
A coven that uses their powers willy-nilly, but is still mostly good
Maybe a coven that dabbles in darker magic, "evil" type stuff?

Well depending on how realistic you wanna go you’d have to come with a story on how the other groups came to be. Since the most typical type of magic in New Orleans is voodoo. Then there’s also the topic of Supremes and Voodoo Queens.

That's true, yeah! I have some ideas already, I can write up some ideas and post a quick synopsis if you like!

Alright! This is kind of a really rough draft, but here's what I got:

As a precursor: Voodoo was brought to the Southern United States from Benin, and its community has consistently been most active in New Orleans. Wicca originated from England, and was the type of witchcraft prosecuted during the Salem witch trials.
The split covens:
During the Salem witch trials, the real witches were smart enough not to get caught. They continued to move further and further South, eventually making their way to New Orleans. The wiccan witches there met with the priestesses of voodoo, and some of their practices began to overlap. As more people began to become suspicious of the practitioners, some of the witches (mostly wiccan descendants from Salem) split off to form a coven based on repressing powers. A council was created, laws put in place, and an academy created to help young witches control their powers. As time went on, some witches created separate academies that focus on honing these powers, creating a society of their own that mostly lives in secret. However, another group became dissatisfied with the council's ruling, abandoning the laws all together and moving to the bayou, creating a coven of their own in the dark swamps. The witches that didn't join the original societies, mostly practitioners of voodoo, continued to live among society and use their magic.

To break it down:
The Council: Witches (mostly wiccan) who suppress their magic, keep strict laws and rules in place, and use a limited amount of their magic to live in normal society. They have academies disguised as boarding schools to help teach young witches to help suppress their powers.
The Isolationists: Witches who were originally part of the council/academies. They still abide by the laws and work with the council, but they practice magic freely. They have no contact with society.
The Assimilators: The witches (mostly voodoo) who didn't join the councils to begin with. Tension exists between them and the council/isolationists. They practice magic freely, and live among society. Oftentimes their covens are disguised as businesses. Sometimes the witches will hide in plain sight, as fortune tellers or potion makers.
The Coven: Witches who were originally part of the council/academies who have split entirely with it. A small group of witches originally rebuked the laws and fled to make their own coven, practicing magic (Even dark magic) as they saw fit. They live in the bayou, and while no one is certain, there are rumors that their numbers are growing.

If there's people who want to play warlocks/male witches/what have you, and everyone is okay with it, I don't see why not! Also-- no idea, but I'm glad you did!

Interested, and have an idea for an event- the Halloween Ball. A yearly event where all the witches of New Orleans gather, no matter their allegiance. An enchantment is placed on the location preventing violence- just a chance to dance the night away and celebrate being witches.

I love that idea! Maybe the council holds it and invites both the isolationists and the assimilators (depending on their relationship with the assimilators at the time)
