Setting the Scene
It’s the end of August in the year 1989. Daniel has just graduated from Riverside High School in Jacksonville, Florida. He got accepted into one of his top school choices, the University of Southern California. He was planning to major in film studies and producing. He’s currently located in a terminal inside Jackson International Airport at 8 AM. He and Alice had been set up by mutual connections to fly together, in hopes they would each have someone they knew in the west coast.

August 1989, Jacksonville Airport
The airport had always been a place of peace, with its rich, coffee smell and the bustling of vacationers and business travelers alike. Although he had been raised by a single mother with a large amount of cash left behind by his negligent father, she rarely spent it on travel or road trips. When it didn’t go to household bills, it went to alcohol and narcotics. It was only when he turned 17 that enough was enough. His brother had passed in a tragic drowning incident that year, prompting his mother to change her habits. She threw the narcotics and the booze out of the window that night. He had fully expected her to die along with Brad, but who knew that his death would be her motivation to quit. By then, Daniel was practically an adult, so he felt that he would travel as far away as he could to make up for the loss of travel.
Daniel turned his head to check the boarding time on the flight screen. 9:15 AM. It hadn’t changed since the last time. He took a look at his phone. 8:10 AM. He gazed back out among the crowds of people walking up and down the terminal area, getting their food and souvenir gifts. He had said goodbye to his family and his girlfriend about four hours prior. It was tearful, but only on their end. Internally, he was happy to get away and finally start his own life. Elaine, his girlfriend, promised that she would keep in touch, as they had decided to try long distance. He was skeptical, and originally told her no, but she insisted. He had always cared a lot about her, but he felt that the relationship would only fizzle away over time. His girlfriend stayed in the area to go to a trade school, she had always been very gifted with her hands.
Daniel’s mother had set up a flight buddy through family friends, thinking that it would help to know somebody that was also going to the west coast. He wasn’t sure if she was even flying to California, or if she would get off at the layover. He had never met her, and was quite skeptical about the whole ordeal. “I’m not 14 years old, I’m perfectly capable of flying on my own.” He had said to her. But she had already arranged it and gave the excuse that it was for her own peace of mind. All he knew was that she had red hair, and he found himself looking for single individuals with red hair among the crowd.
