Fairy Queen
I'll just go right ahead and answer each question in sequence, if you don't mind ( )
I've noticed, looking through my character base, that I seem to prefer somewhere in the middle. Ambiguous morality, not quite good but not quite bad either. One character in particular springs to mind, who is considered a villain in her universe, but in reality she's a barrier holding back an even bigger threat. Her actions put a bounty on her head, sure, but the person she's holding back would do
far
worse than she does, given the chance.
I tend towards sad backstories. Usually with their happy life being yanked away from them, or their whole life being completely miserable up until the point of the RP. In the end, though, I love to have them work through their problems and resolve them in the end, giving them a happy ending if at all possible. Basically, my stories are the "Earn your Happy Ending" type.
This is kind of difficult for me to explain in general terms, because of course it varies greatly with the character. So I'm going to refer to a specific character whose feeling I like portraying the most. This character is fighting against her own sister, because she's turned evil due to some unfortunate events and irresponsibility on her own part, as well as clever manipulation from the sister's new friends. However, she doesn't give up; She'll never give up, because she's convinced that somehow, someway, she'll find a way to get through to her. And this conflict has been going on for at least 2, 3, maybe even 4 years depending on the setting.
That's the feeling I most enjoy conveying. The knowledge that even though everything seems hopeless, that there's no way to achieve her goal, and the fact that she has to
battle
with
her own sister
, for
several years
on end, the girl still pushes forward. Because she's never given up, and never, ever will. She's simply too determined to return things back to the way they were and, especially, earn forgiveness and friendship from both her sister and herself.
I find this setup to be the most enjoyable for me, really. Having a grim and depressing beginning, a rough path through the story, and many joyful tears at the end of it all will
always
be my favorite kind of story. And if you've ever played and finished The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Yeah, I know that kind of comes out of nowhere, but it really is the best example of the kind of story I
love
, and would gladly read/play over and over again.
Anyway, I kind of rambled on a bit, especially in the feelings portrayal question
xD Sorry about that. But that's my answer. And really, I don't believe it's going to change at all in the foreseeable future.
- Do you like lighter character or darker ones?

And most importantly... why?
