Advice/Help What's the best way to improve your writing?

Reading. When you're reading you're taking in sentence structure, ideas, prose, pacing, and so much more lol. Find an above average book or even some of the classics and digest all their creativity. Maybe you'll even re-read them and study their strengths, dialogue, characters, etc. I also find that writing short stories on the side helps a bit.

I'd say researching is important. This of course includes research into whatever is the topic you are writing about, though I am mostly referring to research about writing and roleplaying themselves. You'd be surprised at how much good advise and ideas there are. I particularly recommend the podcast "writing excuses" for it's brilliant discussions on several writing topics. So research and learn about writing, how it's done, what it means to do this or that. Then try to apply that knowledge into how you approach what you are doing.

Of course, even if you research a lot, experience is also important. Try experimenting different things, asking for feedback (be open to criticism) and push your limits.

Just doing it. Don't say you can't-- reading and research are both great, too! They will help tremendously. But you never know what you can do until you try.

What's the best way I can improve my writing for roleplays and stories.

I recommend cranking out single scenes (700 - 2000 words) as training exercises. Reading is great for small gains, but imo, it's no substitute for actual writing practice. I have a lot of book addicts in my family, but few quality writers.

Once you're comfortable writing out entire scenes everything short of novel will feel comfortable.

Reading is a good way to start, but, writing is like art as to where if you do it everyday, you'll improve more and more. Learn from other authors by reading, then write what you've learned. Personally, I've just read a lot in my life time and I've always been rather good at writing. So... I guess there's my proof it works.

Just write.

The more you write, the more experience you gain.

Even if it's by yourself just writing short misadventures with your RP characters, just keep writing.

It really is this simple, and yet at the same time it's truly that difficult. Sometimes just writing is harder than it sounds due to writer's block, a lack of motivation, etc. But just sit down and keep writing and eventually you will reach a point where you're satisfied with your skills and can focus more on the rest of your roleplaying skills.

I can confidently echo everyone here and say that reading and writing definitely help you refine your craft, but I put most of my emphasis on actually writing. Even though reading is extremely helpful to broaden your vocabulary, writing steadily will help you work on your style in a consistent manner.

I've been writing for a few years now, and even when I look back at something I wrote a few months ago I can see a marked improvement on the way I write with the comparison. So keep at it! ^^ Even if it might feel like you're not improving much over time, you are definitely making a gradual climb to improvement with everything you write out.

this site has some really unique writing prompts that will help further your talent. read, admire writing, then write. i thought i was great at writing when i was younger and writing fanfiction, i cringe at that now. writing with others fueled my growth as a writer more than anything else ever could. you have to push yourself to be better. you'll be getting better all the time if you do.
