In essence, they are one and the same but as you and I said, roleplay is collaborative. What you consider a “dark” theme isn’t what most users or people consider as “dark”. People draw the line at many various topics but racism and bigotry are a huge no no for most users. There are plenty of ways to offer social commentary without utilizing racism or bigotry. There is plenty of nuance and commentary to be made without creating a character so vile that it makes most users on the site uncomfortable. consider the people outside of your roleplay, not just the characters within it. your bigoted character may be the star of your story and nothing else but to the people you roleplay with, they could very well be more than just words on the screen as another reminder of how cruel the world is because of something as unchangeable and unchooseable as their identity.To me RP and literature are practically one and the same. I consider RP to be collaborative storytelling and I like stories that offer social commentary.
