Experiences What's one RP trope/topic that makes you leave without discussion?

To me RP and literature are practically one and the same. I consider RP to be collaborative storytelling and I like stories that offer social commentary.
In essence, they are one and the same but as you and I said, roleplay is collaborative. What you consider a “dark” theme isn’t what most users or people consider as “dark”. People draw the line at many various topics but racism and bigotry are a huge no no for most users. There are plenty of ways to offer social commentary without utilizing racism or bigotry. There is plenty of nuance and commentary to be made without creating a character so vile that it makes most users on the site uncomfortable. consider the people outside of your roleplay, not just the characters within it. your bigoted character may be the star of your story and nothing else but to the people you roleplay with, they could very well be more than just words on the screen as another reminder of how cruel the world is because of something as unchangeable and unchooseable as their identity.

The world we live in is full of bigotry so there's definitely plenty of social commentary to make on that.

Even if you do not agree with someone it is not a reason to start personal attacks in a public thread.
The thread will be temporarily closed for review.

I know a lot of people draw a hardline at using real people faceclaims for various reasons. I dont draw this same line, however for me it crosses the line when the face claim is not famous. As in, the pictures have clearly been lifted from an instagram or tiktok account. Maybe they’re famous in a small world, but it’s different from using a model or actor in my view.

This is generally my view too. Celebrity FC's should be used if you're using realistic FC's. However, if you really don't want to use a celebrity then I'm okay with those random face generator sites too. Also, for historical RP's historical photos are fine too.

Jannah Jannah a good alternative is stock photo sites. As they all literally have the license in the information for the photo. So it explicitly says “this person is fine with you using the image under these circumstances, enjoy.”

Weirdly my biggest issue is super airbrushed images. If I see a super airbrushed image or just a list of famous people I’m supposed to use for my face claim I’m like …. And that’s a no thanks for me.

Roleplaying real life celebrities. I had a guy once completely go off script in wanting me to roleplay as Naomi Watts. When I said no, he begged me to for a whole list of other female celebrities against his character. No. Nope. No thanks.

yeah, i've never directly experienced somebody asking me to RP as an irl person, but I've always found the idea kinda strange whenever i do stumble across it.

It's very strange. Then again I won't even RP canon characters in fandom settings. I want nothing to do with that. OC's only.

It is especially when they want you to roleplay the personality, traits, mannerisms. No one would know any of that in spite of what's shown on television and even then who would want to?

Oh, I've got a couple of these.

-Slice of life, domestic stuff. Just doesn't hold my interest, and if a roleplay turns into that, I'll probably peace out.

-Tiny font, brightly colored font, overly fancy font. I won't even reply to ads I find hard to read, just 'cause I'm too embarrassed to ask people to change their fonts for my poor, weak eyes.

-Cis mxf romance. It's fine if the roleplay has a big cast and multiple pairings develop naturally, but if a straight romance takes up too much of the story, it probably won't hold my interest.

-People using art as faceclaims without the artist's permission. This seems to be an unpopular one on RPNation, but as an artist I just get a little uncomfortable when people do it. I'd rather see people using their own art, art they've commissioned/have permission for, stock photos, or picrews made by people who are cool with it. Otherwise, I prefer no faceclaims at all.

-Pregnancy. This is just my own personal hang-up because I have a phobia. But no matter what the character's gender is, or what anatomy they have, I'm not interested in a story where a main character gets pregnant. I can handle it if secondary/minor characters are pregnant, but if it becomes a major theme in the story, I'm so out.

Might add more later if I think of 'em.

Mpreg or Rape. Just. No.

One, Mpreg is just weird af.

Secondly, I've dealt with rape at least three times in my lifetime, and that shit isn't fucking funny.

Lucky for you both are literally not allowed here. Good place to RP, huh?

Well, I'm pretty flexible. Can't say I've turned a hundred and eighty degrees and walked away because of someone whipping out tropes or topics, I'm more likely to leave because of rude people, not rude stories.

I guess me being a flexible person causes me to turn away from less flexible settings. Hard scifi? Hard fantasy? Hard pass. If I want those, I go hard. I go cray cray.

That and RPs that require real life faceclaims. Not too big a fan. I mean, I dabble on occasion and I use real life images for multifandom for obvious reasons, but overall not so much.

Seeing what makes the rest of you tick makes me feel a bit bad. On the other hand, most of what makes you guys tick are forbidden on RPN, so it's all a happy ending I guess.

is that a real saying? I fucking love it!

I haven't heard it before, but I love it too!

And yeah, rpers like that drive me nuts. Often I find it's people who can't actually engage others for whatever reason with their roleplay - they're so busy then throwing their weight around oocly.

I also almost always will jump ship if I see the shy wallflower trope.

To a lesser degree, any form of anti-social, low self-esteem, awkward or retiring type that smacks of "you need to jump through hoops to draw me out of my shell"

That's just way too self-interested, and most of the characters played like that have zero engagement value for the other characters.

Anything pertaining to incest. That includes both step and biological pairings. ERP or not, I just cannot stand it. Having personal experiences with it, I just refuse to understand what people actually see in that.

And while we're on the subject (somewhat), age gaps (within reason) are also iffy for me. I'm fine with, say there's someone in their mid-20s and they get with someone in their 30s. My sister and brother-in-law are 11 years apart and that's never been something to bother me, but, if you have a plot that involves some teacher x student kind of stuff, IDK that's just not my cup of tea, ya know? No hate on those who do like it. I'm sure it's all grand and fun for those who do enjoy it, but just don't expect me to indulge in the slightest.

Also canon characters. I have no problem having them as side characters. In cases of fandoms that are multiversal like Kingdom Hearts or fanmade stories that have a plethora of canon characters, that's fine by me, but in cases of, ya know writing fan fiction (in a sense) with characters without any presence of ocs. I just don't like it. Not that I think there's anything wrong but, truthfully speaking, I just don't have the greatest confidence in myself that I'd be able to write them as good as they were portrayed in [enter fandom here].

This isn’t a specific trope but… When there’s an interest check for a fairly niche idea and then suddenly after it’s posted more start to pop up? I don’t join those others. I mean sure it may be a coincidence but I’m too cynical to believe that.

ahhhh, i can't think of much right now but prob when someone completely random asks to rp with me or they have a post out for an rp they'd like to do, but they fail to mention the fact that they want to literally vxre me or descriptively write about their odd fxtishes .

sorry for censoring things randomly, it's all gross to me .

this has happened OUT OF RP TOO, where i was jokingly talking to someone (over the internet) and they jokingly like, explained how they cooked me, and then ATE ME AND DID ETC STUFF THAT I DID NOT LIKE

i never spoke to them again--

otherwise, i just wanted to mention something since a lot of #1 no-goes in many, many subjects are 'furries' .

as a furry, i understand people wanting to rp their weird rainbow wolves and stuff, but I've also never really rpd with 'furry characters' unless someone asked for a private rp. . ( i also never really got into those because a lot of them are hypersexual and weird . )

so as a furry, yes, i get people not liking them or not wanting to rp with them, but i just can't help but admit that it makes me nervous or even cringe every time i read about someone's negative ideas towards 'furries' .

like,, sheesh, i'm just drawing rainbow dogs and crap, i'm not asking you to become furry or deep-dive into whatever you think i do behind closed doors . i even have to warn people sometimes lol .
'hey, im a furry, i'm sorry if that's weird to you'

i think the thing people don't think about is, is that you only see the weird furries because most furries are probably off roleplaying things about dragons or something random, plus, half of them don't wanna rp with you unless you're also a furry lol .
otherwise, most furries won't even mention their interests because they're so commonly made uncomfortable over it lol .

this is a bit outside of rp too because i'm getting ranty, but people will literally bug me and get into my business and call me a furry in a crude manner for drawing CATS, normal animals, etc, but the second I actually draw something legit they act all awkward with me ig .

'what is that'

'it's a furry'

'oh- i didn't know you were an ACTUAL furry' (probably gonna make fun of me for it or tell everyone they know that i'm weird, love how that happens)

end of rant lol

honestly, i'm surprised i'm even posting this .

Roleplays without racial diversity for me. Hate seeing an RP set in New Orleans but there is no diversity from the applications.

Man,maybe it's just me, but i don't understand the absolute burning hate for canon characters lol. But maybe it's because I have some partners who I really vibed with and equally as excited about those characters. I've had more fun with canon fandom characters than OCs. I can count on one hand the few times an RP with OCs were fun to me and it was because the partners were very good.

Hmm. To answer the thread question, I don't generally have hard nopes but I mostly do go off the vibes of a partner. If it's clear that we're not vibing, I might be more inclined to dip. Especially the type of folks I've had a couple of times who would try to get me to pity them for some reason, or they say things to the effect of most people end up ghosting them anyways and "woe is me." And giving off that sort of thing of you're not gonna leave me, right? Because I'm this close to quitting everything.
I remember once i had someone like that, who made it clear that they thought their writing sucked. Like, would not stop saying how they've been ghosted because of their writing style. Even asked me for any pointers. I'm not good at doing that, but i tried to be polite in my critiques, but i could tell that I low-key wanted out. They couldn't drive the plot to save their lives either. Felt a bit one sided.

Basically, I don't havd hard no's, but if something tickles me the wrong way about a partner, I nip it in the bud.

High School settings. That and a pairing between teacher and student with romance involved. I mean, that just makes me cringe so much. No. Nope.

Lots and lots of guns

No, not guns, but when the GM and everyone are like this is a revolver 2/5, this is a twin gun model Serpent, this is a shotgun model green, and they all have these little niche impact on the roleplaying based on their real world's counterpart, I back awayy

I dun like guns like that or know guns that well to know that Re:Fantasy Clear Reminiscence of Innocence Rifle has a larger knockback compared to other gun models of that era that it would take a longer time to reload compared to the punchier Dark Chains of Imagery Heart Hand Gun!

Yeah even as someone who typically does milscifi, I feel all the specific little technical details don't mean that much. I want to know just how they function gameplay wise. All the tech-porn stuff doesn't really matter a whole lot beyond fluff.
