I'd recommend Code Geass, Toradora, or Clannad. Code Geass has mecha action and a good plot, and can be a little darker. Toradora is a good slice of life/romance anime with excellent character growth and a believable story. Clannad is the anime adaptation of a masterpiece visual novel with great characters and tearjerking stories.

I would go with Death Note, as it doesn't have gore, ecchi or some other stuff that might scare people away, and the plot is really good.
