Video Games What was the most disappointing game you ever played?

In the past few months, it was Outlast 2. Like... WTF, LMAO! I'm a big horror fan, so I was looking forward to that one, and yet I was put off immediately. The game is just so edgy that it isn't even scary-- it's like that one high school kid who goes through an intense goth phase and wants everyone to know how hardcore they are. Within about five mins, it threw almost every single horror cliche at me (including random CReepY DoLLs that made no fucking sense) and tbh, it just genuinely made me laugh. I can't imagine how a group of actual humans sat down, wrote that script, and thought it was ok. As comedy, it was 10/10, though.

I bought Cyberpunk 2077 on its release. It was a game that I had been following for years during its development. I thought through all the videos I saw it was such a good foundation for whatever became the final product. I should have known something was off when there were no reviews prior to launch, but I still bought it. It is so disappointing how much is missing. I haven't finished playing it since before the latest updates. I plan on trying to finish it, but the hype has been killed. I think the only fortunate thing was that I bought the PC version; it was still pretty buggy but not nearly as terrible as those on the console. This could have been great.

Preparing for judgement here - dark souls. Yep. That's the one.

Black Desert Online. It was on sale on Steam for something like $2, so I grabbed it with the understanding that I only needed to play for a couple of hours to have gotten my money's worth.

I spent about 45 minutes in the game before I uninstalled. The sheer amount of menus and UI was just too overwhelming for me as a new player.

Borderlands 3.

I picked up Borderlands 2 when I was 13 and fell in love with the series. I was unbelievably excited when 3 was announced and the trailers came out. I am normally very patient but this was the one time I pestered my mum about picking up the pre-order ASAP. When I finally got it the first few hours were good. But several more into the game things were starting to eat at me. The gunplay is fantastic, probably the best in the whole series. But the story, characters and dialogue on the other hand... it's not the worst I've ever experienced in a game but it just wasn't living up to the standards they set in the previous games. Most of the characters I'd loved previously were either underutilised, pushed aside for mostly forgettable new characters, or became shells of their former selves. Overall it felt like a lot of wasted potential and I tried so hard to enjoy it all. By the time I finished the game I couldn't and still can't bring myself to play it in its entirety again even if the gameplay is fun. Even when they fixed most of the performance issues and added the option to skip cutscenes.

It's left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, though it hasn't killed my love for the series. I still come back to 2 and the Pre-Sequel every now and again like some kind of addict. I hope Tiny Tina's Wonderlands turns out better.

How dare you but also fair.

I like dark souls but I think there’s rogue likes that I like way more. I think DS can get a bit overhyped.

i like games that have some semblance of plot, and dark souls lacks the hell out of any good, meaty plot line. it's just rage-infused gaming at its finest.
i played a bit of it but i was just too bored by nothing really happening aside from fighting endlessly. gave me fps vibes instead of rpg vibes which was weird.

The fact the controls handle like the character was a drunk ballerina with a broken skate doesn't help.

Conan on the Xbox 360.
I do like a challenge, but I also like starting on easy difficulty.
Conan's easy difficulty was NOT easy from the start.

stardew valley. thought that because it was something of an rpg (?) I’d enjoy it but it’s just too casual for me. i got hella bored one hour in and never picked it up since.

cyberpunk 2077 was especially disappointing. so many rpg elements were stripped away since its concept. the bugs and glitches are funny, sure, but i really like in-depth action-driven rpgs and it felt like i had very little overall choice in narrative. it turned out to be more of a linear shoot-em-up than anything.

mass effect 3 and not because of the ending, but because of the way casey hudson wussed out after the leaks and changed the reason for the reaper’s cycle. the original “overuse of element zero rapidly decaying the galaxy” explanation was so much better. also because of what i mentioned with cyberpunk 2077. there is a very notable stripping away of rpg mechanics in favor of action from me:1 to me:3. in the first game you had quite a bit of say as to how shepard interacted and responded with the world around them. by the third game dialogue was slim. you’d pick one option that would basically direct the entire conversation and shepard would just not shut up. some decisions were really just made for you and that’s what ultimately led up to it being the worst entry in the series. it did have my favorite dlc, though. there’s that at least.

Fallout 4, boy do I have a story to tell with this one. I know some other people like it, but when I booted up, I typically only got to play around for a few hours at most before I eventually found it repetitive and quit.

On the flip side, it was pretty fun to stack weapons up in my armory and not have the physics engine sling them around like it just swallowed a brick of pure cocaine.

I played too many games that disappointed me. This is sad. However, I was convinced that the CSGO game was the best and no one else could replace it. CSGO game for many years, more than ten, and I am the biggest fan of this game. Yes, I am 22 years old, and I don't feel too big for this game. I have another game that I like - Rust. It is very similar to CSGO, and I play it on a casino site using banditcamp codes to receive various bonuses and still play with CSGO skins. Instead, due to these codes, they receive different gifts and large sums of money.

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam. Kept getting sniped by Charlies in the trees I couldn't even see, so A+ for historical accuracy, but not very fun.

I have two. Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76. They had very little upsides and an entire ocean of problems.

Well, I haven’t really been disappointed by the games I play because I usually pick the titles I enjoy. But the one game that I can kinda see having a disappointing end was Prince of Persia. After all the hard work to restore everything, the love story triumphed. That one kinda stung because it almost nullified the emotional impact of the cutscene before. Oof! But that’s just my take on it.

Which one? I ask since Sands of Time is one of my all-time favourite games.

the most disappointing game i ever played was the latest installment of nancy drew!!! i've been a fan of nancy drew since i was a little girl and the hype around the new game was insane for a while. there was bragging of amazing voice acting, new and improved graphics, etc.

i played it for about ten minutes and then swiftly went to steam for a refund. -10000/10 the disappointment was unreal

There's way too many to list (or even remember them all) but the BioShock franchise comes to mind.

The first game's writing was pretty great for much of the game but then "BAM, there's the huge plot reveal, now the good writer can go home and we'll have a third grader figure out the rest". What they have you do towards the end of the game is just plain silly and some of the voice logs are inconsistent with what actually happens - they imply a certain process (I don't want to spoil anything) is irreversible, but then... it just isn't? If it was (and if the protagonist had any semblance of free will) then it'd be a major dilemma, a painful act of self-sacrifice. But nope.

BioShock 2 was pretty good. The writing was never quite as good as the first game was at its best, but then it never shat the bed and I'd rather have a passable story that's consistent than a massive decline in quality halfway through. Its plot is easily the simplest of the three games but if that's the price to pay for not having to yell "you fucking idiots" at the screen, I'll take it.

BioShock: Infinite was just dumb, and I will spoil a little bit here so you've been warned. Booker DimWit is the ultimate tired hard-boiled cop cliche and the ""ideas"" the plot explores are mostly uninspired nonsense one would expect from a hollywood blockbuster. They went from dystopian transhumanism with a horror vibe to a story about how quantum mechanics explains a flying city and how people fighting their sociopathic oppressors are in fact the real villains. Oh wait, you are the real villain, but the real villain is also the real villain, he's just... you at the same time. It's stupid. But hey, the gameplay is pretty good.

Assassin’s Creed Unity is the epitome of a disappointing game in my opinion. After the fantastic AC: Black Flag, it feels like Ubisoft’s motivation and creativity regressed after that. Leaving us with a game with a forgettable and inconsequential story, terrible and nearly impossible stealth, and hands down the most clunky parkour in the series to date. While the variety of weapons and collectibles was a very welcome edition considering that the previous titles had very little in the ways of weapon variety, the game was just way too unpolished to be enjoyable for me. Whether this lack of polish came from the dev team’s time constraints, or Ubisoft’s incompetence, I have no idea.

For me it’s Minecraft. I thought I’d enjoy it since it’s within my interests — I love games that I can be creative in without restriction — but for whatever reason I could not get into it.

There’s also Planet Zoo. I adore Zoo Tycoon, so naturally I was excited for Planet Zoo after watching some youtubers I watch play it. However, when I played, I couldn’t get far enough into it to enjoy it due to the game’s learning curve. Even with the tutorial, it’s not exactly beginner friendly. I feel like they kind of assume you have knowledge of how Planet Coaster works since I’ve heard the controls are more or less the same. I didn’t, so I was very lost.
