Anime & Manga what made YOU start watching anime?

In 7th grade, my mom introduced me to a Korean girl who came to America to study. We became friends, and she showed me an anime she liked; I forgot what it was. Anyway, I watched that anime with her. Later, anime became sort of an escape for when I wa bored, sad, mad, or just depressing. So... you can probably guess that I watch mostly comedy and uplifting anime. But of course, I watch anime just for the fun of it sometimes.

i started watching it for the animation tbh. it wasn't later on that i started to care about the plot, characters, story and etc.

I first started watching anime back in elementary school when Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z were shown on tv like at 6am. This was before I knew what anime was. But what made me start watching anime was when I was in middle school and I discovered Toonami on Cartoon Network after school and found shows that looked like that Sailor Moon cartoon I liked when I was little...er.

I was really young when I first started watching anime. Digimon, Monster rancher and sailor moon were the first one's I watched(the channel we got literally played them in that order.)

I was probably 9 or 10 or something like that. I watched Howl's Moving Castle and I thought it was this really cool cartoon. I just loved the artistic work in the movie and I liked how it was really original. I then watched Kiki's Delivery at a friend's house and loved it. From then on I would find these anime movies or series that looked beautiful and were interesting and I would get totally addicted. At the moment, I'm watching Snow White With the Red Hair.

Same way most of my crowd has: 4Kids and Toonami. I watched Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu Yu Hakusho, Ruroni Kenshin, Zatch Bell, DragonBall, DragonBall Z, etc.

It wasn't until I reached high school that I started to a) find out that those shows were anime in the first place and not just some weirdly done experimental piece in the West or something lol and b) watching anime regularly like I do now. I also got into manga.

Some recent stuff I've gotten are: Kill La Kill, Space Dandy, Parasyte -the maxim-, Assassination Classroom, Seraph of the End, Ushio & Tora, Gangsta., One-Punch Man, and of course, DragonBall Super. :)

For me it was the first wave of the Pokemon craze. I was aware of Toonami, but we didn't get Cartoon Network with the TV package my family was subscribed to. So I mostly subsisted on Pokemon and the occasional taped episode of DBZ and Sailor Moon. I vaguely remember catching a few episodes of Digimon, too. As a kid I was really picky about watching serialized shows in order so if I missed an episode I'd lose a lot of interest. Come to think of it, that was the only reason I stopped watching Pokemon back then too, even though that was a lot less serialized than its contemporaries and had more non-essential 'filler' type episodes.

Nowadays I'm kind of all over the place with what I watch, though I keep away from a lot of the skeevier or more 'otaku targeted' fare. I still wonder why I sat through the second half of the first series of Sword Art Online with the pseudo-incest subplot and the horrific treatment of Asuna.

When i was young , very young my aunt saw me watching these weird cartoons and using anime pictures she told me " With all this strange cartoony stuff im SURE you'd love anime." and i asked her what it was.. and she told me to look it up.

Soon enough i figured out what Anime was, my first one i ever watched was probably dragonball Z / sailormoon

Though on that day i clearly remember watching angel beats being a series i watched and may have shed a tear through, showing me what anime actually was and how it was different from just the other cartoons i watched.

My stepdad had one and we began watching it as a bonding activity. I think the first one we watched was Fullmetal Alchemist. After that, I fell in love with anime.

All it really is is me seeing Danganronpa, watching its anime, watching Sword Art Online afterwards, then I just went from there.

Yep. No good story to that at all. Sorry mates.

It's popular and people enjoy it (Maybe not everyone, but a lot of people do). I also had a friend who showed me an anime movie, and I was hooked ever since!

Also, this is my tenth post! This is completely irrelevant but yay!
Yep.. I pretty have the same story as you Bettsy except I came across Inuyasha and Case Closed =p
Inuyasha = me

Case Closed = ex-girlfriend

(My first anime was Inuyasha, which I read the manga not the anime show, while my ex watched Case Closed all the time)

Anyways, I kind of discovered it when I saw that anime girls were cuter than American drawings... to be honest.

An ex of mine was obsessed. I was at his house and saw like two tall bookshelves filled with cartoon movies. I laughed and said, "Dude, seriously whats with the cartoons? I thought you didn't like animated stuff." He said, "I don't like cartoons. I like anime." I was like, "Uhmm.. whats anime? Looks like cartoons to me..." He proceeded to explain to me what anime is, then broke up with me because I was 'stupid and didn't know what it was to begin with'. Clearly he was the type of person who was born knowing everything, so I forgive him for not understanding.

And so it began. I started with El Hazard. Its still my favorite to this day. I haven't gone crazy with anime though. I watch it here and there. If there's a choice: always subbed, never dubbed ^_^ Currently watching: Inu x Boku.

The first Anime i ever saw is Fairy Tale, it's ok, and then i started to watch Sword Art Online, i din't really like it but im hooked with Attack on titian right now, It all started when my friends at school where talking about anime and stuff but i never watched it so i did and the n it just when on from there

I started because of an ex-boyfriend who told me about Fairy Tail . And I got hooked. Currently watching fate stay night. Enjoying it a lot.
