What is your normal character creation process?

i plan what type of character i want to play that matches the roleplay.

after i have a small insight of what my character's persona is going to be like, i choose a face claim.

then i get stuck in. the biography tends to come last because... you can literally do whatever you want

with that to match your character. i think my least favourite thing about character sheets is probably

writing the likes and dislikes, haha. i don't know why but i tend to struggle with that.

I start with an archetype in mind, then draw a general outline of their history in my head. I ask myself several questions, often relating to key personality traits.

  • If they do good deeds to tell themselves they're a good person, is there a particular reason as to why they started that habit?
  • Why do they force themselves to excel at the cost of emotional deprivation?
  • Why do they keep to themselves even though they don't have any problems holding conversation?

Personalities have motivations and reasons, even if it's something as simple as "they prefer solitude to people" to as complicated as "they run on a mental/emotional debt system wherein every favor and good deed must be repaid". It can also be tied with incidents in their past. A person with an inherent lack of self-confidence can come from a family who always expected them to excel, or in the case of the latter example, they're an adopted child who feels the need to sacrifice their own happiness to fulfill the wishes of her foster parents. I've always gone by a rather cynical belief that no person is truly altruistic, and have personal motivations for even the most selfless of deeds.
