What goes bump in the night

Haiku moves within training were more determined now. She had to win; too much was at stake to her now. No one really needed to know what happened back then, right?

----

"Isn't it?" Kerza giggled, spinning in the water. She pursed her lips and odd mammalian sounds came through. Suddenly, a pod of dolphins came swimming up to her, surrounding her. More sounds, like crooning, continued from Kerza. "My, my aren't you adorable?" Her hand reached out and petted a young dolphin's face. "I could just hug you. In fact, I think I will." And she did enthusiastically.

Samuel blinked in surprise: did she just summon that dolphin?

"How did you...right, mermaid," he said with a nervous laugh. He was currently enthralled by the unique sight before him, as he watched a surprisingly beautiful woman, who came seemingly out of nowhere, cuddle a dolphin deep underwater.

*grrrrrrrrrrrrrr*

The water around the two suddenly seemed to rumble as 'something' moved in the background. It was a large, black shape, and the dolphins suddenly squealed to each other and dashed away. From the distance, something seemed to move . . . and then it became apparent. Two lines of teeth, lining a mouth roughly the size of a house. A massive roar echoed through the water, rumbling in waves through the ocean, and sending pieces of coral and dirt flying.

"Hello there miss." He looked her up and down, no desire behind his eyes. He was sizing her up. He noticed the ears. "So what's your story hon?" He gestured at her ears and paused waiting for a response before hastily adding, "Name's Roy by the way."

"....genetic mutation accidentally born into a werewolf family somehow as a werecat." Neimi's words were so fast that they nearly ran together; the fastness came from the fact that it was rehearsed from how many times she had said it. "I'm Neimi. You must be new around here since I have not seen you around before." Her tail twitched contemplatively as she thought back to make sure that she had not accidentally missed him.

---

"....now that's something I can't talk to." Kerza looked around quickly for a big hole in the ship to hide in, then remembered that she had a passenger in a bubble. ".....oh....right....I have to protect you.....gotcha...." With that, she began to jet away through the water back towards the shore line, pulling the bubble along with her.

"What the bloody blazes is thaaaAAAAAAAA-" Samuel exclaimed as they jetted towards the shore. What the hell had they gotten into?!

From the PDA headquarters something unexpected emerged. Leceel was walking out, carrying some manner of handheld device in his non-cast arm. He seemed oblivious to everyone else as he made his way down to the shore, looking directly out to where Kerza and Samuel were now beneath the waves

----------------------------

The creature let out another roar, and started to move after the little bubble and its escort. It's eyes were glowing orange, and seemed to be almost like submarines

"Huh, so you got something to keep you, erm, human?" Roy asked standing and starting to look through his box of chain. "I knew a werewolf once, helluva guy, saved my life more times than I can count. And I still have all my fingers. But he did have a problem that time of the month. Your mutation change what works on ya?"

"....I really don't know what that thing is and I don't want to find out." Kerza answered. Focusing through the water, she hurtled the bubble up through the water, to the surface, and then rocketing high up into the air. She then began to focus on swimming as fast as she could to get away.

----

"Well...." Neimi smiled. She pointed to the collar around her neck and the metallic inserts in it. "These help me out, though I have a cage for "that time of the month" as you so aptly put it. The same things that work on werewolves work on me of course. I'm not too much of a freak; I'm just a cat." As if in response to her words, her tail moved up and brushed her hair back away from her face.

Leceel's eyes locked on the small figure making its way quickly towards the shore, and he started to trudge out towards them

"This way!"

A wake started to form behind the two, a sign of something massive beneath the surface . . . the anomaly he had seen. The man took in a deep breath before the cast on his left arm burst into pieces, revealing the horrid aberration beneath it. He placed the device in his oversized palm and held it out in front of him, waiting for the two to pass him

"Huh, well, good to know there. So what do you do on this team? and what do we tend to do?" Roy asked returning to his chair by his workbench with several reagents spread across it.

"Woooaaaaaahhh!" Samuel shouted as he hurtled into the air, rapidly losing momentum. Eventually he reached the peak of his ascent and realized that he would be heading back down in a moment. "...Oh, bloody heeeeEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA-" he howled as he fell rapidly towards the ocean blue.

Kerza didn't have to be told twice; she headed towards the figure on the shower. While swimming, she realized that Samuel would crash on the beach if she did not stop the bubble. Her strokes paused for a second as she reached out towards the bubble, dramatically slowing its descent.

----

Neimi's fingers brushed against the handles of her twin pistols. "I kill whatever needs killing and protect whoever needs protecting. As to what we tend to do, we try to take care of supernatural problems across the world."

If Samuel had been observant during his fight into the air, he would have noticed the truck on the beach not far from his location, and that Neimi was near it speaking to someone...but his mind was preoccupied by thoughts of potentially becoming a pancake. As he fell he could feel the bubble slow, and he landed safely on the beach as the bubble burst with a *splash*, drenching him once again.

He rose to his feet shaking the water out of his hair and the hair out of his eyes. He looked over and noticed a newcomer on the beach, someone he had never met before. Whoever this guy was, there was something very wrong about his left arm...

It didn't take long for Samuel to decide that he'd rather be closer to this stranger than whatever pursued him underwater and he rushed over to stand just behind the man's right side, cowering slightly. "What the heck IS that thing?!" he said weakly, referring to the shape beneath the water's surface.

"Well, that's a good goal missy but you've gotta know when you can't protect someone..." His voice drifted off as he looked at one of the bottles on his shelf. He turned back down at his work and started to cut the bamboo into slivers. "Only get to sacrifice yourself once so make it count, Kit." There was a moment of silence before he changed the subject.

"So you like pistols, eh?" He pulled the behemoth of destruction from his thigh. "This is mine." It was nearly as big as his forearm with a .50 cal barrel. He smiled as he looked down the guns length before holstering it. He didn't know what it was but he liked this kid, probably a bad sign.

"Know if we've got a mission in th-" He cut himself off.

"Did you see that guy fly through the air?" He stood up, strapped his sword to his back, and, after deliberating for a few seconds, grabbed a potion from his shelf and started out of the back of his truck at a run.

"It's an ancient creature that's lived here for some time Samuel. There's a reason we do not disturb the depths more than we need to."

Leceel stretched his mutated arm fully forward, clutching the device. Just as the massive maw reared out of the water, it released . . . something. A blast of light and constant waves of sound emitted from it, and Leceel's heels dug back into the sand as it did so. The monstrosity roared back, falling backwards into the water and quickly retreating beneath the surface. Leceel let out a sigh and stuck the device back in his pocket.

"There. Right back where he belongs."

--------------------------

Overhead, a plane slowly came in to the PDA headquarters. Shepard had returned

Samuel gave a deep sigh of relief as the gargantuan beast retreated into the deep blue yonder. He looked to the man who saved him: on one hand, his monsterous arm terrified Samuel, but the man had just saved their lives. Also, he had an odd air of peacefulness around him that Samuel couldn't explain.

Samuel politely cleared his throat into his right hand. "Many thanks for discouraging that behemoth, sir. I am Samuel. May I inquire your name?" he asked with a refined grin.

Leceel turned to face the young man with a questioning look in his eye, then a spark of realization.

"Of course, we've never actually met in person. My name is Leceel, though I am often called 'Hermit'. I spoke with you and the others to some degree over the radio on the last mission."

As he spoke, Leceel pulled out a large roll of bandages and starting tying his arm back up the way it was. Not nearly as secure, but a temporary fix until he went back to his abode

"Ahhh!" Samuel mused with a smile, "I thought I recognized your voice! So you are Leceel. Pleasure to make your acquaintance." He didn't even consider to ask about the man's arm; he knew all too well how it was to have unpleasant and/or unusual limbs, and figured that if Leceel was anything like himself he would rather not have attention drawn to them.

"Now that was a mean beasty!" Kerza reached the shore. "I can't swim in the waters without something attacking me it seems!".

---

"....Samuel?!?!" Neimi saw the bubble fly up and fly back down. She also witnessed the creature's maw coming out of the ocean. "What on earth?!?!" She started racing past Roy towards her friend.

Samuel noticed a pair of people approaching rapidly out of the corner of his eye. When he turned to face them he realized that one of them was Neimi.

"Neimi!" he greeted her with a smile, "You missed some of the...well, I can't say it was all fun seeing as we almost got eaten," he said with a nervous chuckle. "But it's okay, Leceel saved us! Oh, where are my manners," he said with a smack to his forehead, "This is Kerza. She's...well, effectively she's a mermaid!" he said, his eyes shining from the wonders he had seen just minutes before. He turned to the woman in question. "Kerza, this is Neimi. She's a werecat and a very kind person." He didn't say anything to the new man just yet, mostly because he intimidated Samuel.

"Well, glad that's all settled then." He eyed Leceel warrily, especially at the man's arm. "Name's Roy, by the by. I'm a new 'recruit' from the states. Either of you rag dolls need a little pick me up?" He shook his bottle filled with a hazy purple liquid at both Samuel and Kerza.

Samuel tentatively stepped towards Roy. "I admit, I'm rather shaken from that encounter...what is in your, as you said, 'pick me up'?" He asked with a slight tilt of the head and furrow of the brow.

"It'll boost your natural healing into overdrive, but it won't fix anything that can't fix itself." Roy looked at the Samuel with a critical eye. "It don't help 'shaken' boy. You can stand and talk without winching in pain and we ain't lookin' like we're preparing for a fight so I'm gonna say you don't want any of this. Has some nasty side effects."

Samuel swallowed hard. "I'll take your word for it in that case," he said, retreating a couple steps towards Kerza.

"197...198...199...200!"

Adrian finally finished his vertical push-ups and flipped himself over so he stood on the ground correctly. "Harder than I thought with one hand..." he mused to himself as he caught his breath. Even so he was grinning like always; there was little time for rest, considering what was going to happen tonight. That was enough warm-up.

Adrian drew his blade from it's sheathe and imagined Haiku before him, with both scimitars drawn. He'd gotten a chance to observe her style while in France, so he focused on visualizing her movements as he parried, dodged, and counter-attacked. He would keep this up for another few hours until dinner, and the whole time he forced himself to keep a cheery expression. Adrian was always a friendly face, and was never not smiling to whoever was in front of him, be they ally or enemy.

He couldn't afford to lose his cool again.
